How to Explore Sandover Village in Jak 2!

- An old PS2 Jak 2 trick has recently been revived with the use of the Debug Mode! Doing this will allow you to explore Jaks home, Sandover Village, but in Jak 2!

The reason why the Krimzon Guard crates are in Sandover Village is because of legacy code from Jak and Daxter. Notice how all of the Krimzon Guard crates are spawning in the exact same locations that the Scout Flies from J&D would. All that's happening is the code from Jak 2 is following the same calls that the code from J&D are making, so when the code says "Deploy 'crate object' here", the code from J&D would deploy a Scout Fly crate, but the Jak 2 engine grabs the Krimzon Guard crate instead. I think it's likely that they used the same variable name to represent the Scout Fly crates and the Krimzon Guard crates between games.
By the way, this area was never meant to be playable in Jak 2. Evan Wells confirmed this in an interview with GameTrailers, and if you'd like to see the video about this glitch and the accompanying interview with Wells, the link is here: ua-cam.com/video/kdF5UenRq7c/v-deo.html
I was thinking the same thing regarding the code, so it surprised me when he got to the oracle and there was no hint of any crate.
Looks like only certain crates are spawning in. Why that would be, I have no idea.
Maybe a naughty developer just decided to place a few crates where some of the scoutfly crates used to be, as a little nod to anyone who managed to find their way there.
In that case, of course Wells wouldn't know about it.

I looked into it, and you're right, those Sandover scoutfly crates around the Oracle don't have equivalent krimson guard crates present in Jak II.
It seems at this point, your guess is as good as mine on the matter. It could've been an employee's personal secret easter egg, or the calls made to load the crates around the Oracle were deleted to save resources. Unfortunately, because development occurred so long ago, it's unlikely that any developer would be able to explain the existence of these crates, as many tend to forget about the nitty gritty nuances associated in the software. I'd also imagine that there was little time and attention dedicated to editing Sandover Village, as it wasn't anything other than a setpiece and decorations for a brief cutscene.
Still imho, I still personally believe that the presence of these krimson guard crates wasn't intentional and slipped in unnoticed. I think that while Jak & Daxter was created by highly talented individuals, people seem to give them too much credit for their work by theorizing that many of the technical flaws of the game were "intentional glitches" designed as amusing easter eggs. I figure that if any of the team members believed there was a way for players to access Sandover Village in Jak II and they wanted players to discover an easter egg there, they would've made a more outlandish surprise for players to find. It seems though that the area in Jak II wasn't given much consideration, as many of the level effects are missing or broken, and overall, the developers never implemented anything for players exploring the map.

With opengoal now a thing, I bet someone will eventually import jak 2 into Jak 1 and have it play out like a DLC after the player gets the time machine from the precursor vault.
I couldn't imagine them doing this to Jak 3 though, waaay to different.

I loved this. I so wish Jak 2 didn’t take place in the future. I wish it was just like the first Jak and Daxter game, but with a different story as older Jak that would of made Jak 2 a whole lot better and I wouldn’t rage as I do now with Jak 2.
Actually jak 2 take place in the past where haven city was
Jak 2 actually does take place in a timeline that is after where jak 1 takes place, so it is into the future. Jak and samos were born in Haven city, they are sent to the past where Jak grows into a teen, (time of the first game is here.) then they travel forward in time to where jak is a kid. He grew up in the past, so that's why there's counterintuitively a child Jak in the future

I think they should do a PlayStation 4 physical copy of Jak and Daxter trilogy but this time it has Jak X Daxter Jak and Daxter the Lost Frontier but all the games are remaster and reworked and it's called Jak and Daxter the precursor collection just like Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 HD Collection six full games on one disc

Those crates are actually there in the same spot as scout flies were, because the crimson guard creates containing dark eco overwrote the scout fly code.
I know there isn't a lot of 'new' Jak content out there right now - but I think more videos like this, secrets and such for the Jak games would be awesome.

I think the crates are in the scout fly locations. They might have just been swapped in as a quick way to get the level to load in an environment where the scout fly asset was not available, or the asset simply had its IDs reused in the code.

I remember hearing about this as a kid and I loved doing it.
Crates placement was for the scoutflies in the first Jak game. Theyr obviously replaced with dark eco crates.

the crates that are present are in the same locations as the scout fly boxes in jak 1, that tells me that internally the scout fly boxes in 1 and the eco crates in 2 are the same item and they literally just imported the map from 1 into 2

Hold up, all of those Dark Eco crates are placed where the scout fly crates were. Maybe the crates are just using the data value that the scout flys used in the first game, and so the imported map just has that code embedded in it.

Yea, you now don't have to take the disc out of your PS2 to do this. I see why it was inpossible on PS3 and PS4, just like the Xbox 360 when you try to remove a disc, it doesn't stay on the game frozen, or whatever it does, it takes you back to the console home screen.

it's like a rom hack of Jak II, but except all of the levels outside of sandover village, collectable items, original ecos, and interactable files in sandover village are all cutted off. And that's what traumatizes me. jak never comes back into sandover village in any of these games, that's also traumatizes me. the Blue ecos are Missing, The Red Ecos are missing, Green and Yellow are also missing. because they're used as weapons. And dark eco was used as a new power source while it's originally a POWER OF THE DEATH!!!!!!!!! (Because it used to kill people).
