Dude, I remember holding a copy of Blood Will Tell at my local Electronic Boutique, trying to decide if I should buy it. The store owner pulled out a GamePro magazine with a review of the game that the author titled "Crap Will Tell", so I decided not to buy it. I never realized this game is a whole lot more than what the reviewer let on.

The recent remake is what made me even aware of Dororo and it is absolutely top tier storytelling, especially how they really improve on hyakimarus character by showing just how stunted of a human being he is by being deprived of basic human senses. And seeing the side by side comparisons of how faithful it was to the original is just something else

A year and a half ago a friend of mine was streaming this game on Twitch, trying to defeat all 48 fiends. At some point he was to confront the butterfly fiend in the bamboo forest, and he also allowed for the stream to have song recommendations to play during gameplay.
I suggested Smoking Roll for God Hand. He did not know what Smoking Roll sounded like.

I was actually waiting for this game to pop up in your reviews! Probably one of the only games you're reviewing that i actually played, as this genre of gameplay just wasn't something my family ever got into growing up. I have very mixed feelings about this game, since at times actually playing through it felt like i was constantly dragging my legs through broken glass(the final boss especially), but everything else about it stuck with me for well over a decade. "Back to the darkness" and "Away with you!" are phrases i still regularly think about saying! For a genre i had no experience with and a story i had no idea of this game will always hold a special place in my heart, i sincerely hope this game gets a remake in the future. I think I was able to land the 48 slash combo vs Behemoth fair and square, but holy shit, what a curveball to throw at you at the very end. The only other game I can think of that does something similar is Alter Echo (please tell me you're planning to review it eventually), which forces you to nail the longest time-freeze timing puzzle in the game to deal the final blow. Also, every once in a while the button prompt randomizer glitches out and just gives you multiples of the same button over and and over. If you get lucky with one of these jackpots on the Behemoth, even a 80+ hit combo wouldn't be out of the question lol.

Sweet psychically malleable alien matter, Alter Echo. Good name to throw out there. That one's definitely a game worth talking about in some depth.
Oni too. And perhaps Zeno Clash. And surprisingly, Kya: Dark Lineage. That one has surprisingly in-depth combat for a 3D platformer title.
Alter Echo had interesting ideas with the transformations, like hopping onto an enemy in the Stealth form and then swapping to Human or Gunner form, to lead into either a grab for the Human form or the enemy's head being stuck in the gun barrel for the Gunner form.
From what i remember, combat did feel good enough. But i kinda lost interest after the first fight with Paavo, if i remember correctly.

      Fucking love that game.
Acidic bioslime aesthetic, dope-ass trance soundtrack, and probably most expertly crafted difficulty curve I think I've ever seen in a game. The way it constantly mixes up the enemy waves to force you to juggle through the transformations and make use of every ability in your arsenal is just *chef's kiss.*
There was a point where I was getting worn down to my last sliver of health, not nearly enough to handle the next wave of enemies, until I suddenly remembered that the chameleon form has the cloak ability, which I completely neglected to use in combat up to this point, and which was just enough for me to do a mad dash across the arena undetected and pull off a stealth takedown at the last second. The whole game just clicked, man.

@@NucleaRaptor Shoot man, that's a pretty vivid descriptor of your memories with the game. That is testament to the strong emotions tied to it, and is quite sweet to see for a game so little known. Cherish those memories well.
Perhaps I ought to replay it sometime and try to continue on. It's a tough one from what i remember.
Here's to hoping that Alter Echo may return some day. If not as a remaster or remake, then as inspiration for others. The "Acidic Bioslime" style as you call it can have potential for a lot of very cool stuff, as well as the in-game lore of there being essentially psychics perfectly attuned with plast as it was called, to basically create anything out of.
It's kind of like playing god with a world or material that was not meant for man.
Now you're making me remember Michael Bell as the planet itself, too. The planet was strangely adorable.

Because I might be from your génération (late 80's) I do understand and can feel perfectly what you mean by all of this and I also agree 💯
Ps2 was our golden era as kid. We had time to experience the évolution of this kinda game almost from 0.
And it was such a fantastic aventure, wasnt it ?
+1 sub mate, keep going🔥 Games are a part of our childhood and even influenced our personalities for some of us 🫡

There's a live-action movie called Dororo that heavily burrows elements from the series with some changes. Dororo is a grown adult by the time she meets Hyakumaru. Hyakumaru's father is actually ruthless and slew a buddhist monk who tried to stop him to make a deal with the demons after losing a major battle for power. The movie does not end after slaying all 48 demons but after finally retrieving his heart from a certain someone. The end shows Hyakumaru and Dororo walking off into the distance ready to take on the rest of the demons. I should mention that the movie does explain how Hyakumaru got his prosthetic limbs, and it's not what you think. They're all made from limbs of dead people, including children, as casualties of the ongoing war in Fuedal Japan. Overall, the movie, Dororo, is still good and worth watching.

Also the slashes all have paterns there are about 4 or 5 combination that start over at 25 slashes once you memorize them it's easy to get into a rythem

It'd be nice if expensive games like this one got remastered/rereleased for both current consoles and pc. These companies have been pretty neglectful rereleasing games from the 6th and 7th gen of consoles.
I appreciate that studios like Nightdive Studios focus on remastering or even remaking FPS games. But, they haven't done this for FPS games from the 2000s and early 2010s, my favorite FPS games of all time came out during those years. Pretty burned out with 1990s FPS design.

I'm a huge fan of Dororo and Tezuka's work so I'm surprised I never played this, I vaguely remember hearing that there was PS2 adaptation of the manga but I shrug it off thinking that it was probably one of those cheap IP adaptations but now I know how wrong I was, I had to pause the video because you convinced me to play it, so I'm gonna do that and watch it after, thanks a lot for introducing me to it though!

I played this during my college days. The very first thing that drew me to the game was the name: "Osamu Tezuka", which I knew was the creator of Astro Boy.
Honestly just wanted to find the monsters and get all the body parts back for that sweet stat bonuses.
I totally lost count until you pointed out how many I went through to reach the final boss. (Not to mention made me remember the trauma of having to do that very, very long input command during the final boss fight.)

I never had a ps2 as a child, but as a teenager, a guy exchanged it for my Super Nintendo, and Dororo was, along with Shadow of the Colossus, one of the games that most impacted me. When I heard an anime was being made, I could not hold my excitement over it. Thankfully, both experiences were very enjoyable - and the anime has a banger of an opening.

I didn't even remember the game's name at that point lol

I love this game, the stages do get a bit too lengthy for my taste but I am glad that there's a number of useful mechanics that help make mistakes hurt less bad, like the multi hit sword (I am even worse at the stylish finisher, never managed to get more than like 8 hits in and eventually stopped using it all together) and multiple lives you can refill rather easily by revisiting the first stage over and over between chapters.
