I live in the southern hemisphere so seasons are flipped. This past winter I think I almost did this to myself by pointing a portable heater directly at my back multiple times a day. I think the only reason I was saved is that we moved into a warmer apartment and I didn’t need to use the heater anymore. This really needs to be more talked about!

This happened to me when about 2 or 3 years ago I was using a heating pad on my low back almost all winter. Since I don't look back there too often I was shocked. You could literally see where the coils had a reddened surface to that area. At a regular checkup to my derm she asked if I had back surgery. I told her what I had been doing, but she didn't tell me to stop, which I had already. I am fair skinned, but it literally took months for it to clear up. I have had squamous cell carcinoma in the past, so I sure hope she is diligent about checking my back. Thanks so much for this video. I will probably never use one again unless it is first protected by a thick towel.

I definitely developed a bit of an addiction (for lack of a better word) to a heating pad and small space heater when working in a cold office setting. The space heater would be blowing directly on my shins and I developed discoloration there and the heating pad discolored both my lower back and thighs from sitting on them for the highest setting for hours at a time. What can I say, ya girl loves heat. Eventually I noticed the net type of pattern and it freaked me out enough to stop using both. I’m fair skinned and it took months but the marks did go away eventually. Roasted skin is an incredibly apt description, thank you for making more people aware of this!

I have seen so much of this!! I am a surgical RN. When we have our patients come in to have steroid injections done on their back they have to lay facedown on our table and their skin looks brown/discolored and has a web pattern from them laying on heating pads! Thank you for bringing awareness to this!! Not many people know or realize what it does to their skin.

I use a heating pad almost daily for my lower back pain & spasms. I always have a layer of clothing between and I have noticed some redness/webbing but it doesn’t last. I’m very fair skinned. I use it at a lower heat and not for hours and hours. I can’t be without it and nobody sees my lower back so I weigh the pros/cons and choose my beloved heating pad. Better than eating gobs of ibuprofen every day. Thanks for the info Doc. 😊

Yessss I've been wanting a dermatologist to make a video about this!!! Thank you so much. I unfortunately developed chronic pain in my late teens / early 20s. Struggled to get effective treatment. Heat worked amazingly well to relieve the pain. Ended up frying my skin and got the toasted skin syndrome on my back in my early 20s. Lucky for me, after stopping use of heating pads for nearly a year, it faded completely. I now rarely use heating pads and mostly use hot baths for heat. So scary that it can lead to skin cancer! I hope that because I was so young and that it fully faded away, that my skin cancer risk is incredibly low. I didn't know any better back then, I was so young and uninformed. I showed my doctor at the time and they didn't have much to say about it.

When I was young, I frequently used the steam room at the gym. Never bothered anything. Then, 5 years ago I did the same thing. I have been fighting hyperpigmentation from using the steam room ever since and have made very little progress with Hydroquinon, Cyspera, Alpha Arbutin, Vitamin C, and Tretinoin. My dermatologist has given up on me.

Sounds like what we’re in Scotland as Fireside Tartan before central heating we would hang coal fires. If you just have a coal fire the room can still be bitterly cold in the outer areas of the time, so your firing is cold and your back is cold. So people sit closer and closer to the fire and their legs would often end up very red and damaged.

As a college student years ago, I spent hours with my laptop directly on my lap. I had developed the discoloration (my doctor called it mottling during my physical one year, asking if it had always been there) when she pointed it out, I started reducing how much time my laptop sat directly on my lap.
It’s been years, and the mottled/net-like appearance had long since cleared. Now I know to keep an eye on that skin in the future. Thanks!

Sounds like infrared radiation is probably pretty damaging to the skin. So I am guessing this applies well to infrared saunas. I was surprised that I couldn't find many studies on the usage of infrared saunas though like a lot of things on the internet ... things are often not cited when one makes health claims. One study that is often cited doesn't have the same conditions as one would find in an infrared sauna. The subjects faces were only exposed to heat around 32 C which is less than that found in infrared saunas. Though it does seem to be an interesting case that infrared radiation is maybe dose dependent, like a little can help and bring beneficial effects but too much at one time can be really damaging to the skin.

For people like us living in India where you find mostly hot weather ☁️🌡️ is too brutal to the skin. In the summer we go through close to 45-48 degrees in some parts of the country. We love winter out here. 😅

I've experienced this with a laptop on my bare thighs. I saw a story about it online somewhere and immediately stopped putting my laptop on my legs. Thank you for letting everyone know about it. It's not pretty at all. Luckily I hadn't been doing that very long so it healed within about a month or so.

Because my bedroom lacks sufficient insulation to stay warm in the winter, I use a space heater so I don’t get hypothermia overnight. I have it set so that if it is below a certain temperature, it turns on. However, sometimes it ends up staying on the whole night due to this, and I have woken up with it still running before. This past week I woke up in the morning after a night with the heater on, and when I washed my face and did all my normal skincare, everything burned. My skin was massively sensitized to the point where even water was burning it and stinging it. I’m pretty sure one of the contributing factors was the heater drying out and damaging my skin. I think my skin barrier is kind of messed up now so I’m trying to moisturize more and heat less.

Interesting… You know, I’ve used a heated mask over my eyes for the treatment of dry eyes and styes (though the styes are rare for me). I don’t use it often, (OK, mainly because of laziness), but also because I tend to get eyelid eczema, especially in the winter. I don’t want the skin around my eyes to get any drier and more irritated. I know now to limit its use unless absolutely necessary. Thank you so much, Dr. Dray! 😎

Now I’m freaked out about using my infrared pad - though I dont use it at a high setting. But what about infrared saunas and why doesnt this seem to be an issue in regular saunas? I am assuming it’s not an issue in regular saunas since they have been used for hundreds of years and never heard of this?

I stayed in an unheated stone building for ten weeks. I turned on the electric blanket for an hour before bed, then turned it off when I got in. It was sufficient cause I didn’t loose any heat having to warm up the bed with my body heat.

This happened to me when I had Acute Cholecystitis from using hotwater bottles over my upper right side, I was in so much pain from my infected gallbladder I didn't realise the hotwater bottles were scalding my skin. It did resolve a few weeks after my surgery but I was worried it wouldn't go away and I am very careful with hot water bottles now and always use a cover!

Hi Dr Dray, you know you said yesterday about not opening a product until you're ready st start using it if it says, for example, valid for 6M from opening - well how long can you keep unopened products sat in a drawer for? 1 year? 2 years? Thanks!

    • @DrDrayzday

it depends on the product expiration date...most things are good within 3 years if unopened
