How To Edit Sony PS5 4K WebM Video Game Play with iMovie FCP and Resolve

- In this video I "eventually" show you how to edit Sony PS5 WebM video on your Mac using iMovie (FCP and DaVinci Resolve work too). We found out that neither iMovie, FCP, or Resolve like the WebM format that comes out of your PS5 (when capturing in 4K mode). So....You will have to convert it to MP4 (or something else) using a program called HandBrake.

FYI: I guess there is a way to "FFmpeg remuxing to MOV" as well....BUT if you have ever worked with FFmpeg you will know that it is a very powerful tool and has a lot of configuration options, that I DO NOT want to deal with, lol. So....I still think using handbrake will get you most of the way there, with a "little" bit of time waiting for the conversion. I'll post more if I can get information on this, and if I think it's easy enough for "normal" folks (like myself) to use.
Truly appreciate. I usually edit on the P5 then upload on the Mac. I tried to edit a video the other day and nothing will work. Going to try this later today. Thanks again. happy it didn't work for you and you showed how to resolve instead of just doing a quick edit like you never had any issues. The transparency was needed.

Great video but I have an issue as when I convert the web m to mp4 it opens in my editing software but seems to be weaker colours like it’s been watered down it does this when HDR is turned on . Any suggestions??

How are you getting the footage from ps5 to the mac? Moving to external ssd or a thrum drive? Also is there a way to do it by sending it directing to the Mac … and I hate hate hate that you can’t store media anywhere but the internal storage .. I have a 1tb nvme in the side storage bay and it just won’t let you store there.. I’ve already like so many others had the ps5 barf from the nvme and had to reformat it MAJOR ISSUE maybe heat related but it’s wide spread and rampant..
I move with a USB thumb drive or SSD drive. No way to send to your Mac directly, that I know of. I have yet to add a NVME drive to my PS5, but was just about to. I hadn't heard of any issues, but I will look into it and figure out the best brand to buy. NVME's get crazy hot so...I don't doubt there are issues. Make we want to put a small fan on it...lol.
Hmm… if it goes from 1.56 GB to 671 MB, then I feel like the conversion clearly isn’t high quality, even if it says it maintained the same resolution. Did you happen to post any of these original vs converted files directly to UA-cam so we can see if there’s a visual difference?
My conversion was quick and dirty in that video and you can fine tune it to get a "better" quality if you mess with the settings. This will increase the file size and maintain more "quality". It all depends on what you want to use it for. If you want the best possible quality, the file sizes probably wont be that different. I totally forgot to upload some 4k WebM vs converted, so I will try to do that this weekend with the new Horizon Forbidden West. That said, post conversion still looks really good for my purposes.
@@ET_Videos hell yeah, HFW is what I’m currently playing too! I searched this tutorial because I’ve been recording that game in 4K so my PS5 defaults to WebM format and I wanna know how I can make these files usable lol
@@Kingsley4K "I think" you can also use the video editor on the PS5 to covert, but I haven't actually tried it. I find it easier to just throw it on a USB drive and plug into my Mac or PC...then convert it with handbrake.
How do I convert multiple videos at once? I have over 100 30 second clips I need to convert. Is there a way I can que them all so I don’t have to repeat the process over and over again?

Hi Eric, did you try using a webm file with HDR? colors are washed out. Tried on Mac and Windows
I'll have to go have a look. I didn't even think about that. I have to figure out how to edit HDR video in FCP, for sure. That will also require a new purchase of an HDR monitor, lol. I know my PS5 and my Sony X900 are on fighting terms over the "new" HDMI 2.1, so I switch it to HDMI 2.0 only. Now I don't have problems. Things are a bit "buggy" or "beta" to me with the PS5. I was thinking of trying to do the WebM to MP4 on the PS5 with the included editor. Let me know if you figure anything out!

4K WebM videos from the PS5 are intensive so not too out of the ordinary. I switch to using the MP4 recording format in PS5 settings to avoid this WebM video format lol

Im a bit worried why Its taking my M2 Pro 10 core MacBook Pro so long to convert a 2.3gb file? Is it normal for it to take this long? It's been 20 mins and I picked the Super HQ 4k option to convert to. And the estimated time is about an hour long. Seems a bit insane for such a small file.
ok I retried it now it says 5 hours and it keeps going up and its only 2% done.
WebM is. a "funky" format and sometimes just takes forever to convert. Only two real options...One is to switch your PS5 to MP4 video and lose a bit of quality or wait it out. I basically gave up on it and only produce MP4 videos on my PS5. They still look great and saves me time. Oh yeah....another option is to capture it for some kind of device like an ElGato, etc.
@@ET_Videos I ended up using an app from the App Store on the Mac but I had to pay 12 bucks to get lifetime conversions. Damn I should have known that I could do it on the ps5 and skip a step. I don't mind losing a bit of quality because there's already a massive difference in contrast after importing it anyways. It's just not HDR like how u see it on TV while playing.

Which one do you have? The 13 inch? I have the newest 16" and the fans have never come on. On my old Intel MacMini they would come on a lot more often, especially if I was rendering a video!!
@@ET_Videos 13inch , i followed the same steps and for some reason mid way the fans start going and my computer started heating up.
@@visiiontech The PS5 4K footage isn't the best quality codec (WebM) out there, so I could see this happening. It "shouldn't be a problem, just a little noisy. I am really not sure why Sony went with the WebM for the 4k??? And I was kinda hoping they'd give us a better 4K mp4 video choice. Let me mess around with it and see if I can figure out a better way to transcode it, and I'll post anything I find here in the comments.

Handbrake can do a lot of conversions so it could change the quality, but if you pick a higher quality setting, it's basically just going to convert the video into mp4...so you will lose little to no quality.

Because it’s WebM format. If you use the MP4 format it will work or you have convert the WebM.
Y is it so difficult to do this!? Saved a ps5 clip straight to the usb drive I been using for my ps4 clips but pops up as WebM file. I just wish it worked as intended like before. PS4 clip I could save it to usb storage and plug into my Mac and airdrop straight to my phone no bs no extra steps. My genuine question is why tho!? Why can’t it just work how it used to. I’m only converting 1080p60fps (before it was 720p30fps) NOT EVEN 4K! I used VLC and it cut my 20 min clip to 56 seconds with no audio…(not even 4K 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️). Try loading a WebM video on a PC….good luck 🍀 with that. It’s not the system, it’s the garbage a$$ WebM video codec that nobody supports.
