      Getting ready to do my kitchen but I am doing a two toned a lite gray on top and lil bit darker on bottom cabinets want a antique look so im asking what should I do waxing or glazing I am looking at the smoked glazed from rust linoleum not buying Annie Sloan she is just way out of my league price wise also told vinegar is a excellent cleaning product budget friendly too

    • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  3 роки тому

      mom Woodard all “chalk paints” are not created equal in fornulation not in quality. I’m not a fan of the Rustoleum for kitchens. It will not hold up long term and your time is worth too much to not have it last. Try Jolie. It gets twice as much coverage per quart so it’s quite affordable. I’d recommend a paint wash with it for toning. I love the clear wax for sealing. If you don’t want to use that you can use a high quality paint and primer in one and seal with a varnish. Do not use enamel paints as they will feel sticky forever. Soapy water with a bit of vinegar is an effective cleaner. Clean until your water is clear and be sure to rinse well.

    I decided a few months back to paint my kitchen cabinets. My research led to Annie Sloane’sChalk Paint. Before I tackle my kitchen I’ve started with my bathroom vanities, medicine cane it and a 5 draw piece from an espresso to the oxford blue. I then did my ladder bookshelves in the Chicago Grey. I’m trying to get better before the kitchen. I was going to take a class but then the lockdown started in NJ.
    I have my paint and will be ready to go soon. I have a very open floor plan. The kitchen is in between the dinin room and living room. I have no upper cable it’s at all. I have an L shape island that shapes the kitchen on the DR side and a granite top bar top on the LV side. The island is currently a dark walnut color and the other cabinets area smooth finished antique white. I’ve decide to to the island in Napoleonic Blue and the under counter cabinets in the old Barcelona Orange. I did get the Annie Sloan lacquer for the top coat. I’m trying to get as smooth a finish as I can on the orange.

      My pleasure! Just soapy water works best to clean. Strong chemicals will wear the wax away where you will need to rewax every 6-12 months so best to use just soapy water for regular cleanings.

    How do you clean grease build up on chalk painted cabinets? Do regular cleaners work? Will they damage your paint?

    • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  4 роки тому +1

      Angie Tanner is this cleaning because you’ve cooked something greasy and you are maintaining your painted cabinets or because you want to repaint them? Also were they sealed with wax or another sealer? If you know the brand used that helps too. The answer changed a little based on all of those things!

    • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  4 роки тому +1

      All Things Godly, Good and Beautiful yes you can use wax over latex. The difference is when you use an absorbent paint like ours (which is now branded Jolie) the wax soaks into the paint giving you better, longer lasting protection. Wax over latex will need to be touched up every 3-6 months in a kitchen that used daily. It will give you extra protection though for sure.

    • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  5 років тому +3

      Thanks for watching! That's a little bit of a trick question. I used French Linen when it was manufactured by Davis Paint Company (Annie Sloan licensed her name to that product). The current Annie Sloan French Linen is manufactured by a different company and is a totally different color and a totally different paint (super confusing I know!). If you like the Davis Paint Company color as shown in the video, that manufacturer is now licensing their products to Jolie Home. The Jolie Linen would be the color you'd want to get. :)

    Howdy, great video! I am getting ready to do my kitchen cabinets. Have some practice ones and trying different techniques. I am torn between glazing and waxing. Seems that the waxing is way more work? Also do you not use a top coat that's recommended for the chalk paint?

    • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  2 роки тому

      Great questions. Keep in mind not all “chalk paint” is the same. Many so called chalk paints are just poor quality latex paint with lots of chalk in them to make them matte and to get more yield from the product but they will not last. I recommend Jolie as that is what I’ve found to have the best longest lasting results. For kitchen cabinets if you want a glazed finish i personally recommend using a paint wash instead of a glaze because it is easier to do and more forgiving (i have another video on that specifically if you’re interested here on our UA-cam channel) and then sealing with clear wax. That will hold up the best long term with very little to no maintenance and be easy to repair should any mishaps happen to them. You certainly can use a glaze but will then need to use a clear coat varnish over the glaze. I never recommend a poly which is not compatible with matte finish paints and can also yellow over time. Varnish is similar but different and a much better choice. You will still need to watch for drips and runs and should sand in between coats for the smoothest finish. I personally love the look and feel of wax and the ease and speed at which you can apply the wax. It is sooo much faster and easier but it really is a personal choice.

    So this may be a dumb question, if you use the brown wax say on the lower part of a pedestal table or the backs of chairs will it rub off on people's cloths or does it dry? Thanks! Steve

    • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  3 роки тому

      Steve Clark not a dumb question at at! Actually it can. The colored waxes can rub off over time. I don’t love using it on chairs for that reason. If someone is extra warm and extra wiggly that wax could end up on their pants. I’m most cases it’s fine but for chairs, kitchen table tops and high use kitchen cabinets i prefer to do a paint wash to get an aged patina and seal it all in with clear wax. I’ve got a separate video all about washes and dry brushing techniques if that’s of interest to you.

    • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  2 роки тому

      Keep in mind not all “chalk paint” is the same. Stay away from the brands at the big box stores-they are not good quality paints. I’ve had amazing long term success using Jolie on metal. For best results give yourself a little extra time to complete the project. Keep your paint nice and thin and let each coat dry fully overnight before applying the next. You will need 2-3 THIN coats over the metal. Let the final coat dry overnight before waxing. Do 2-3 thin coats of wax to ensure even coverage keeping in mind you don’t want to leave a waxy build up just good even coverage soaked into the paint. Be gentle with them for the first couple of weeks while they finish curing.

    I have beautiful maple cabinets that now have the finish scratched off behind the knobs. I'm thinking of chalk painting only the frames in black, so it will restate the granite colors. Intimidated. Can I just clean with vinegar water vs stripping them? If I want to add the black wax as a glaze effect in cracks of original maple tone, will it stay, will it work?

    • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  3 роки тому

      You definitely do not need to strip the finish before painting. I would recommend sanding a little though to smooth out the areas that are scratched.
      The black wax will be fine in the cracks and is easy to touch up if you need to scrub your cabinets and it wears away although it’s unlikely since it’s just in the cracks.
      It’s only paint! Do one and see how you like it before doing all of them. You can always take it off or change it. Don’t be intimidated. You can totally do this!

    I've just finished the video. It was wonderful and very instructive. I already used chalk paint in my bathroom cabinets and they look nice. I am planning to paint my kitchen cabinets. I would like to know what can use to paint the sides. They are made of laminate wood. Not real wood.

    • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  2 роки тому

      Keep in mind that not all chalk paint is created the same. Many of the brands use a lot of chalk in their paint to make it go further and give it a matte finish but that also leads to poor bonding qualities meaning it either won’t stick to the laminate or won’t last. The Jolie brand we use will adhere and create a strong long lasting bond. Here are my pro tips for painting laminate:
      Keep your paint nice and thin-your first coat will barely cover and will be uneven and that’s ok. If the paint wants to separate (like a lacey oil in water look reach back out and I’ll give you some additional tips. This is rare but can happen with some surfaces)
      Let your first coat dry overnight to give it cure time to bond properly to the surface.
      Paint your second coat and let it dry a minimum of 4 hours if you need a third coat of paint and overnight before you wax it.

      Prep work is key. Making sure they are super clean and dry is truly all that is needed of you use Jolie. Keep in mind not all “chalk paint” is created equal. • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  3 роки тому

      I do not recommend primer. Primer will not do anything for the grain. If you want most of it to go away just using the Jolie chalk paint in multiple directions will fill in the majority of it because of its inherent properties including the body of the paint. I personally love seeing just a hint once painted because then you know it’s real wood. If, on the other hand, you want it to be completely smooth as if painting over mdf, you can fill the grain using a water based paintable wood filler and a putty knife to push the filler down into the grain. Let that dry and sand it and the grain with disappear.

    • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  4 роки тому +1

      rashmi chhabra Let your hand tell you if you need to sand. If it feels rough or uneven (like a thicker area on the edges) then yes i would recommend sanding. To avoid the paint from rolling over the edges in the future be sure to keep your coats lighter even if it means an extra coat of paint. It will be smoother and more professional looking. Please note that not all “chalk paints” are the same kind of paint. The Rustoleum is still a latex paint so it will behave quite differently from the paint in the video which is Jolie brand and not a latex paint (still water based but not latex). Happy to answer any paint/coating questions though as it’s definitely my area of expertise whether or not it’s a product i happen to sell.

I am in the middle of a remodel and will have new floors that have brown and grey in it. My wall is a light creamy brown with white trim. My cabinets are big box store/stock maple (not sure exactly if they are fully wood) and I would love to paint them an antique/aged white but dont want it to look yellow or dingy with my white trim. What do you recommend? A pure white with the colored wax? Or should I get an off white paint? Should I sand my cabinets to be safe?

      Pros: Clear wax is super easy to apply. If you can put lotion on your hands you can apply wax. If it’s harder than that you are doing it wrong. No overlap marks. No worry about drips and runs. No sanding in between coats.
      Not all wax is created equal. I do like the Annie Sloan wax and know it holds up. I now like the Jolie wax even more because it’s easier to work with, doesn’t get sticky and dries down harder faster. If you have a question about another brand I’m happy to answer. Those two are by far my favorite and what i know to work best over the Annie Sloan/ Jolie paint. If any thing ever gets on your cabinets that are waxed and simply cleaning it off with soap and water doesn’t work then you can fix it in seconds with some fresh wax as you saw me remove Sharpie in the video. Easy peasy! CONS: Wax is not as hard as varnish. I personally no longer recommend the Annie Sloan floor lacquer as it yellows in sunlight and overtime. Very disappointing. It looks terrible. Clear coats require a much more sure hand being careful not to overlap too much or even worse over brush and over work it. Sanding between coats is recommended on cabinetry as is applying 2-3 coats letting it dry at least 6 hours in between. Clear coats will hold up to more vigorous scrubbing and hold up to grease splatter better. Wax and grease are not friends but then again neither is the contact paper on the side of factory finish cabinets. It’s far worse than wax in absorbing grease spots. If you cook at lot of bacon and fry a lot of food you might be happier with a liquid clear coat. It does not do well with water but again neither does the factory finish on your cabinets originally. My recommendation is that if you want to wash down your cabinets daily and cook with a lot of oil then skip the wax and instead use Jolie’s new Varnish made for cabinets. If not the wax is my choice. I recommend wax 99% of the time. Again make sure you are using Annie Sloan/Jolie paint though. If using another brand of “chalk paint” that advice does not pertain. Hope that helps!

If you don’t want any you’ll need additional 1-2 coats and maybe a bit of sanding to get it ultra smooth with no grain and it’s still infinitely easier than grain fillers.

    If a cabinet is currently painted, can this be applied on top, or is it better to sand the current surface?

    • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  3 роки тому

      Great question! If the surface is stable meaning the current paint is adhering strongly to the cabinet then you’d be totally fine to clean them and paint on top. Keep in mind any coating is only as good as its substrate so if it’s peeling or flaking that’s no bueno and you’ll need to sand that. I would also recommend sanding any areas that have chips to smooth the transition and to be sure it doesn’t continue to chip.

    Hi, I am going to be painting my kitchen cabinets. I have 39 total between cabinet doors and drawers. They are 35 years old and dark. I intend to use jolie paint. I ordered a sample of pure white and antique white to see which one I like more. I also purchased the brown wax as I would like to distress them. I am very nervous and excited about this process. I am trying to find a color that will be warm but not yellow. Do you have a recommendation? Thank you

    • @FleurishHome

      lynn lazzara is recommend the Gesso White for an off-white without the yellow of the antique white. Be sure you do 2-3 coats of clear wax to protect your cabinets. My favorite way to distress what you are working on is to sand after the first coat of clear wax to reveal some of the dark work underneath. Then another coat of wax to be sure it is all sealed well. If you still want to give them a little more patina the brown wax can be that third coat of wax. Your kitchen is going to be transformed!!

      Ok so the oak is probably giving you some tannin bleed through. Priming does not stop that. The only thing that stops it is shellac. I would recommend clear since you are using a mid-tone color. Also when Annie Sloan changed her formula and manufacture we were not happy with her new product so we stayed with the US manufacture that had been paying her a license fee to use her name on their product. That product is now labeled as Jolie Home and is my recommended product. Most of the videos showing AS are using that US formula so if it’s still giving you some troubles after using the shellac I’d recommend trying the Jolie brand instead.

      Karen Olson the laminate should paint fine although thin layers and extra dry time will be the key to success. Glue down the part that’s peeling. If you find the paint is struggling to stick (which is rare but can happen) sand super lightly with fine sandpaper just to give the surface a bit of tooth but not remove any of the laminate coating.

    how often does the wax finish need to be reapplied? my husband thinks it would be too high maintenance vs a polyacrilic finish. thank you!

    • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  4 роки тому +1

      Cindi Perron it depends how much you use your kitchen. If you cook everyday, the utensil drawer that gets used and grabbed with wet hands for example will need to be touched up maybe once a year but the majority of the cabinet and drawer surfaces will probably never need re-waxed. I recommend sticking with just the clear wax for the most durability.

      @@FleurishHome thank you so much for such a quick reply! i use my kitchen a LOT, but i try to be careful about opening drawers and doors with messy or wet hands. we had custom cabinets put in 2 1/2 years ago and the paint started chipping off in spots before 2 years was up (the spots were not even high "traffic" areas), so we're wanting (ok, I"M wanting, lol) to re-paint the cabinets with the chalk paint.

      Cindi Perron good prep will be key for you but i think you’ll be very happy with how well it holds up. Sand the areas where your current paint is chipping to be sure the substrate is stable. Test out bathroom vanity cabinet first if you aren’t sure. It will give you a smaller project to practice your technique and be more confident in your decision. Happy painting! 😊

    Why does the chalk paint on my cabinets scuff off easily

    • @FleurishHome
      @FleurishHome  9 місяців тому

      Without knowing more about your products and process I can't give you an accurate answer. But I can tell you this: Good prep work is key to every project no matter what materials are being used. That means the surface should be clean (be sure not to use harsh chemicals or leave any cleaner behind on the surface), dry and stable (meaning no loose or chipping paint). Then using a quality product is important. Not all so called "chalk paint" is created equal. Many brands are very poor quality which is why Jolie changed their name to Jolie Matte Finish Paint. Too many brands using inferior ingredients are on the market using the term chalk paint now.

      We can ship it to you if there isn’t a Jolie retailer near you. Do not buy the “chalk paint” at the box stores because it is not at all the same kind or quality.

    How do you go about painting when the cabinets are pressboard and laminate? We didn’t know it was laminate until we had a mouse problem and they were chewing at the paper. Disgusting and the mess! Well, now I need to figure out how to paint over or whatever I have to do to fix my kitchen.
    My kitchen is large and open, eat-in which I would like to change and I have plenty of cupboards and a terrible Pantry that was built by someone that doesn’t cook, EVER! Yes there is plenty of floor space but that is all this manufactured home was built for, Space! I would like a big square Island with lower cabinets that I can have my Kitchen aid Stand Mixer in one of those drawers that is slid out then hinged so you push down on the top and it pops up to use then when I am done, clean it up, then push the shelf down and slide it back into the cabinet. I want several of them for my appliances. I also want a vertical pantry that holds canned foods like on store shelves except laying down. Hard to explain but with this system, you can tell in a matter of seconds what veggies or soup you need since the shelf is right in front of you. It is awesome!!! I would like double ovens to bake lots of cookies. The big thing is I don’t want it to be in Washington State. This is supposed to be the best place to live in the country. Well, if you have an endless bank account and don’t mind being swindled every time you turn around then, yip, it’s a fabulous place to live. Just start giving out your money everyday for stupid things. The people voted in the motor vehicle tax so we only paid a certain amount on our tabs. It passed overwhelmingly. Well the government stepped in and started a lawsuit because of the money they would not get. A number of years ago, our governor asked the people to vote on a 5 cent a gallon gas tax hike which was turned down flat. Our state has the most amount of taxes for gas, tobacco and alcohol in the country and for NO REASON AT ALL! Well, when the voters turned the government down, she (the governor) added a special tax that was to go to “The General Fund” and raised the gas tax from the .05 cents she asked for to .09 cents that she didn’t ask for and just TOOK FROM CITIZENS. Yip, the great state of Washington!
    So, anyone with any common sense, don’t move here, just vacation here and have a great time then get out while you can!

      Jill Pritchard it depends on what type of laminate. Is it essentially contact paper over plywood or is it more like a plastic over mdf? If it’s plastic over mdf you can actually remove the coating and mdf paints beautifully. You can paint over either but it takes a bit more work and patience to make it last.

      This paint is very different than latex though so that’s not surprising. It was a game changer for me when i had my professional refinishing business-faster and easier application, easier to repair any damage/wear down the road, just as durable as factory finish, higher end look and feel than latex but more durable-just a few reasons why i sold my top of the line sprayer and went back to hand painting when i started using Jolie.
