Definitely liked that finish with the black in the grain. I’m rewinding the video to get to that part again since I am in the process of doing this at home, so might add that step in between!
I like the process you showed very clearly and one thing I learned is if I wanted to make something using the white and grain...i would not use the black pigment since it is a strong contrast.. but rather a medium gray pigment maybe and i think that will give the cabinets a beautiful and subtle antique look! Thanks again dude
You just answered every question I've had for 3 years about my oak kitchen cabinet possibilities. Thank you so much for including all steps and making it simple. I want to strip varnish in motion cabinets for natural look and paint top ones lite paint. Now I know exactly how to do that!
I have ugly oak cabinets. Thank you for acknowledging that not everyone has professional equipment. This process is definitely suitable for DIY. I think I will be doing the white color on mine. Appreciate the video I will use this as a reference.
Great video. I've watched a ton of these in preparation for attempting this process, and the one bit of advice that stands out in this video is to have a finished control piece next to your work pieces to help ensure a consistent look.
It is stunning! Thank you Konstantin for such an amazing video! If there was a list of those products that you used or recommended in the video description or in the comment that would be awesome!
Thanks for the comment! I used Envirolak single component primer and the CIC single component polyurethane topcoat and I also used Milesi water based glaze
I really like how that navy turned out. I just might do something like this in the new house we are building, so tired of all the same old white cabinets I do for everyone.
I like to grain fill oak using aquacoat. The grain filling gives you a very smooth finish. It will never look like clear maple, but it will look very updated, and you'll only know it's a refinished oak cabinet when you are really up close because the grain does not pop out.
@KonstantinUdalov I don't know ow what you mean by brutally filled. Aqua Coat is very thin. You apply it and then sand it. It closes the pores of the oak and help build up between ridges. When you spray over the filled door, it looks very smooth. I did this in my old house. I could have purchased maple doors for $40 each or just put in a little work to keep the doors out of the landfill. Quite honestly, it's about the time and effort you are willing to put in.
@@A-ph7hf wooden doors can be recycled not thrown in the garbage . time/vs money it's probably the same +/- but new shakers maple or mdf are made to be smooth. Oak is oak.
@smon8497 so aquaculture fills the pores so that you get paint that lays flat where there is grain. It is not a brutal fill. It is applied with a thin flexible piece of plastic. Try it some time. It will give you the professional results you aren't achieving because your preparation is lacking.
Great video Konstantin. The blue cabinet color with the black came out really nice. The white was not really my taste but if I could recommend you show the cabinets facing directly the camera lens instead of at an angle and maybe much closer so the effect is even more pronounced. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks for your video. A lot of people are now redoing their kitchens this way. It's becoming more popular. Noticed there's a few disapproving trolls. Allow people to redecorate as they wish. Be kinder.
Question, I hope u respond. This will be my first project. For the paints/coats, any polyurethane single component will work correct? As far as prime, do I have to mix the zinser shellac with water if I can’t find the envirolac or COC one, or is that primer already to go? Also is the unicorn brand at Walmart ok for the glaze? Sorry for all the questions I’m so nervous but IM DOING THIS! Thank you!!!
Unicorn at Walmart is not good. Shellac is ok but you’d need to spray it. No water - shellac BIN is alcohol based (add methyl hydrate to thin it down) - again - no brush only spray if using Bin shellac
I did mine and it didnt turn out as i wanted obviusly different materials....now waching you doing the whole process i feel that i should do it again by follow the steps that you just explain......wish me luck and thanks for sharing tge information.....
8:19... What?? How you did it ? I lost you there.... The black colour now is the glaze? And then you remove it while your glaze is still in liquid form?
I applied black glaze onto the blue and white doors. You can roll, brush or spray it on - doesn’t matter- main things is the glaze has to be on. Next step is to remove it
What about krud cutter? I think that’s what it’s called? For cleaning off tacky mess and grease. Also this was a super helpful video. I’ve been wondering if I am hiding the grain when I paint the oak cabinets in my kitchen. I feel confident in letting that grain pop 🥰
You’re most welcome, hope you enjoy the process, let me know if you have any questions, follow me on Instagram and send me questions if you have any along the process
It was blue navy as far as I remember. For the primer I used envirolak t 9000. For the topcoat I used Cic satin sheen single component polyurethane water-Born . And it was was Milesi glaze.
Awesome video Konstantin, question for you: are you sanding off the glaze after it has dried or immediately after application? and what is the abrasive you are using? Thanks.
The dry erase glaze is very easy to while off / sand off - and it flashes / dries momentarily. I usually use soft flexible sponge or scotch pad (aluminum oxide felt like abrasive) it really depends of how much and which way you want to remove it - the look that you’re going after. You can try and see what you like most, but like I said dry glaze is super easy to remove
Can you explain the glaze in more detail? I bought a waterborne glaze and added a waterborne colorant (liquid) to it. What is the consistency supposed to be? When we lightly sanded it, it took the top coat off. I must not be doing something right.
I think something is not going right. Let me try to clear things up. The first coat is primer. Second coat is the top coat with colour. Next coat #3 is the glaze application. After you apply it - wipe it off or sand it off (depending on the type of glaze) and the next step (step number 4) is the most important coat - clear coat. This last step will lock the glaze down and provide the protection to all your beautiful art done on the steps 1-3 🙌☺️ Hope this helps
Hi Giselia 😊👋 love your comment ! Honestly I would replace doors on all the oak kitchens with new mdf doors . But this technique is something that very few people are obsessed with . So I tried to help them with the tips and tricks I got on this
There are tons of videos like this on how to convert oak cabinets to plain dull gray. I'm trying to find how to reverse that process, restoring the golden oak's shining glory with wood grain visible. The grey paint is so deep in the pores that even intensive sanding wouldn't remove its residue. Is there any better solution than using a table wood planer and shaving off a millimeter or so of the surface or replacing entire cabinets?
That is a heck of a lot of work.... I'm in deep dodo because I have 150 drawers and doors to do, plus all the cabinets themselves... what are your thoughts about sandblasting the cabinets but using soda? The sand gun is cheap, you can rent a compressor and it will get in every knock and cranny??? What are your thoughts???
Hi Konstantin , thanks for your information of how to finish old cabinets doors , they look beautiful Can you please show us how to get rid of the wood grain on the cabinet doors to make it smooth and flat . I really do appreciate if you do so , thanks!
Hey buddy. From my experience it’s not the best to do so. - if you really need to get rid of the grain - I’d replace the doors with new smooth mdf doors and fill the grain on the cabinet boxes (just apply grain filler or wipe on white filler and sand flat )
Hello there. How long should I wait till the primer fully settle? I primed my cabinets (with prior wash and send) but looks like some spots are pealing and scratched. it is been just 7 hours before test. best regards.

Very nice! Just a question, is the ceruse look done only on doors, or is it done on side of the cabinets and trims around the door. Also, I noticed that sides and trims have less grainy look compared to doors.
It would definitely work on the frames as well. My rails have less grain either because I worked less with the wire brush or it’s just the rails had less grain in it
This particular one is made for sanding. Very easy to sand. But there’s an oil like glaze - that one you can wipe off. I’m not a fan of those because of the adhesion problem that it creates. When you wipe off you can’t really sand after - if you do you can make the wiped off gaze disappear , but with the sand off glaze you create a good sanded surface ready to accept next layer (clear coat)
1) What’s a replacement for a professional blower? Can I use a wet rag and dry rag? 2) what about the other side? Do you do all the coats on one then the other, or a coat on each side with dry time in between?
@@KonstantinUdalov I think that is realistic. I just priced one for a few bucks less, but included painting the insides of the cupboards as well. Keep up the great work.
Great video! Thanks! Quick question - what sheen did you use on th ebase color? I have heard that if the base sheen is flat or eggshell you would need a topcoat with a satin or better sheen before glazing. What are your thoughts? Also, what grit sandpaper did you use to remove the glaze?
I’d suggest a higher sheen for the base colour: I used 20. Top coat sheen doesn’t effect anything. Just your preference. I like 10 sheen. 20 or 5 is good too, to remove the glaze I used 220 or fine sponge
what about maple cabinets that are smooth (from the late 90's), they are a light maple color. do you have a video on how to get them updated? And also, is this video still up to date? Or has this white and blue with the oak wood-grain showing gone away by now (11 months later), or would I still be good to get my smooth maple cabinets changed to these colors, and would that still be good in Sept. 2023? Thanks so much!!! SUBSCRIBED !!!!!!
Thank you for the comment :-) this colour trend is still there, however, on maple cabinets being very smooth, this green piping technique wouldn’t work, for smooth maple I would just go with plain colour like blue, gray or white
Would this work out with slab cabinets w/ beveled edge? Mine were painted white and hate it and this looks easier than stripping/staining them. They are the cheap wood cabinets but want to refinish until we can replace them.
Great video demonstrating differences, techniques and contrasts! The blue cabinet was amazing after the cerusing? Spell 😅. I needed guidance as I'm planning on painting my oak cabinets as well. I considered a tan wash vs tan paint, any suggestions? Thanks again for this very informative video! New subscriber here 😊.
Hello and welcome 🤓👋 are you Debbie ? Thanks for the kind words! Sorry I’m not sure what tan wash or tan paint means . We’ll be happy to give you some suggestions
@@KonstantinUdalov Yes, Deb or Debbie. That's ok, its mixing paint with water, painting on then wiping back. The paint left behind allows grain to show with some color. Same as whitewash, pickling, I think. Tan paint is just painting with a tan colored paint. That you showed with a different color. . Thanks for the reply! 😊
Hey, great video. Would you be so kind as to provide some additional information, please? I live in Canada and have been trying to purchase glaze for my cerusing project, but it's no longer available. Also, the only glaze I'm familiar with is difficult to work with for cerusing anyway. I'm wondering what product you used exactly? Your black spray-able material looked very good. Appreciate your response.
Hey J . absolutely! =) We have richelue in canada that has ICA waterbased glaze and any colour CNL pigments. - you get the glaze (or aging agent - they call it ) and any colourant you need ( CNL waterbased ICA) mix it together and there you go. Also depending on where exaclty in Canada you live - there's other polyurethane distributers that must have the dry glaze in stock
...did not understand him that well, is this a steel brush at the beginning, if yes, probably a soft version ? it's a pitty he does not show the result on better close up.
Hi Sinsua ☺️👋 I tried my best to chow the close up at the end . Yes that was a wire brush. - it helps in making the grain more open and have more definition after
Primer was Envirolak 1 component polyurethane primer . Top coat was centurion cic polyurethane 1 component. And glaze was from Milesi . Clear top coat envirolak 1 component clear poly
We have kitchen cabinets that are about 20 years old that were updated installed by previous owner. The cabinets are higher end and structures are good condition and have some sort of baked on paint, very smooth. But it is chipping off and is a hideous plum color. I have no idea how well this will work. I hate to make a mess and then just have to buy all new cabinets in the end.
Hi Graph. Ig the doors are smooth - this technique won't work. I'd suggest getting new doors and repainting the body of the cabinets - it'd be a lot less than new cabinets

@@KonstantinUdalov ok, thanks so much!!
Are we supposed to let the Gel dry and sand it or just put it on let it sit for a few minutes then wipe it off
Hey brother . Depending on the type of glaze you use. What type / brand do you use ?
HI! well done.
Thank you! Cheers!🍻
What is the name of the blue color?
It’s hc-154 hale navy ☺️👌✅
Would this work out with slab cabinets w/ beveled edge? Mine were painted white and hate it and this looks easier than stripping/staining them. They are the cheap wood cabinets but want to refinish until we can replace them.
If they are made out of oak - than this technique is possible. If not - I’d recommend to replace it .
Is there a list of materials used
Hey Ken. I used Milesi wb glaze, envirolak 1 component polyurethane paint and clear coat. Cic white wb primer
what happened to the blue and white doors?
Sorry what do you mean ?
How much would you charge a client per door?
For this type of finish - 60-80$ per door
Wonder if it will work with milk paint as the base paint.
Absolutely. There’s no limits in colour combinations 🤙☺️
I may have missed this in the tutorial. Any specific things to keep in mind on the type of paint to use after using the primer?
1 component polyurethane is the best.
Any brand you can find in your area. My best are: sivam, Sirca, envirolak, cic, Ica, Milesi, il a, Renner.
That’s amazing
☺️🙌❤️
Hi Sinsua ☺️👋
I tried my best to chow the close up at the end . Yes that was a wire brush. - it helps in making the grain more open and have more definition after
one more quesstion, is the blue top coat is infact a paint coat or is this the protective clear top coat?
The blue paint is step 2 (after primer) step 3 is glaze and step 4 clear coat to lock the glaze down
Thank you @@KonstantinUdalov
What paint and glaze brand did you use ?
Primer was Envirolak 1 component polyurethane primer . Top coat was centurion cic polyurethane 1 component. And glaze was from Milesi . Clear top coat envirolak 1 component clear poly
Beautiful
Thanx Zak =)
Are you able to do the black in the same color as the cabinet and end up with a smooth finish or would you still be seeing the grain?
Hi Luke. Not sure what you mean.
Do you want to make oak doors look smooth with no grain ?
@@KonstantinUdalov correct. Make them look smooth with no grain
Hello! Thanks for the video. I am wondering what you are using to get the black glaze off. Is it sandpaper? Or a kind of sponge?
You’re welcome ☺️🙌 it’s a medium grit sanding sponge. Pretty soft
Would "Java Brown Cabinet Decorative Glaze" from Home Depot work as a glazing paint?
Im not sure my friend . I’m not familiar with that Home Depot product
