    When painting cabinets and furniture w Chalk Paint if u add a lil water to the paint to thin it out a lil and get a clean spray bottle full w water and spray ur brush lightly after each 3-4 stoke it will prevent streaking, n that rough finish!!!! These steps give the most beautiful finish I always do chalk paint this way u will b amazed at the end results

    I’ve painted lots of cabinets with a chalk paint that I make myself. Super fast and so satisfying!! I’ve not used the wax that you have but, will try it. I did my own about 5 years ago, and they still look great! I found that brown paper ( construction or grocery bags ) work well for knocking the chalkiness down, to leave a smooth finish, without sanding!

      @@pmatthews4391 I can't speak for Sarah, but I've made my own just by adding plaster of paris to paint. Worked well. As for the sealing, you can use floor wax (cheaper than the chalk paint brand wax) but I can't say how durable it would be. I usually opt for poyureathane.

    I used TSP to knock down my shine/coating on my cabinets, brushed a thin coat of Sherwin Williams cabinet primer. Rolled (smaller rollers and a beautiful finish no brush strokes left behind) two coats of Sherwin Williams (1 gallon) of Cabinet latex satin paint (holds up better then craft paint in a kitchen) NO SANDING AT ALL... no surprises or slow downs got the job done. Did my kitchen alone. I never could have brush painted that would have taken me forever and my hands would have been aching. Rolling was so easy and a thicker coat will be more durable in a kitchen. Looks beautiful ladies. Just curious of the cost of 4 coats of craft paint, wax sealing? Ugh must have cost a fortune... I missed if you shared the total cost for your kitchen?

      Hey there! Thanks so much! Actually, the chalk paint goes really far. I didn’t ever add it all up but going from memory I’m pretty sure it was under $75 altogether. The large bottles of chalk paint are 9.99 each and if you get them from Joanne fabrics you can even use a coupon sometimes. The wax is somewhere around $20 from Lowe’s and I think we only used one of them. Hope that helps! Congratulations on such a successful project! You rock!

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  4 роки тому +1

      I’m guessing that people may have been talking about oil based clear products or oil based paints in general. Any oil based products have a tendency to yellow over time. Do you think this may have been what they were talking about?

    • @vanessathompson7468
      @vanessathompson7468 4 роки тому

      It was chalk paint but it was the wax on top that caused it.

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  4 роки тому +11

      Ok. If you use an acrylic topcoat, you should not have any yellowing. I’m guessing the one you’re referring to was a real wax. The brand we used in the video is acrylic and should not yellow. You can also use Minwax Polycrylic which is not a wax at all, but a clear acrylic topcoat or my favorite, Benjamin Moore Stays Clear. It’s a bit more expensive and a bit harder to find, but extremely durable and easy to work with. Any of those options would work. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. 🌸

    I have noticed you using that wax on many projects. I don’t understand how it protects the paint and or the wood say on a kitchen table. Does it dry hard? And do you need to apply it every so often again to protect the wood? I’d appreciate a response because I just got a solid oak table and chairs for free that has only one pedestal with beautiful carved claw feet. I wanted to chalk paint the pedestal and antique just that part of the table. For the top, I want to keep the oak color but I can’t sand due to disability therefore I want to clean it really good first but don’t know how to protect the top from wear and tear. I was considering a wax such as you’ve used on these cabinets but am unsure if, for a table that will have grandchildren around it, if that kind of wax has to be reapplied every so often. Would really appreciate a response Kerri! Thanks! 😊

      It does harden but it also can be removed with heat. Meaning a hot rag or coffee cup. I'll wax furniture sides. Never a tabletop and I personally wouldn't wax my cabinets. If you do you'll have to keep rewaxing if you clean them often. Wax is easy to use and really holds up well on the right surface.

      Great question! We only sanded after the last coat of paint. Just make sure you don’t wait longer than one day to do it. Chalk paint hardens and becomes more difficult to sand as time goes on. I would literally wait until it dries, usually 15 to 30 minutes, and then sand with a fine grit sandpaper so that you don’t create deep scratches in the paint. Hope this helps, please let me know how your project turns out!🌸

    You need to buff that wax when it’s dry-24 hours. That last end shot looked awful and patchy because you did not apply and buff the wax properly. 2-3 coats is necessary for a kitchen because of spills and condensation etc.
    Annie Sloan has a short video explaining how to wax an also how to feather the paint so u don’t have to sand it down.

      Hi Connie! Great questions!!! I had all the same questions when I started using chalk paint. Actually, I find the chalk paint sticks much better than any other type of paint I've ever used, even without sanding. Its amazing!!!
      And the doors did not stick to the frame because the chalk paint is not sticky at all. It is the latex and acrylic in traditional paint that will make it stick, and there is none of that in the brand of chalk paint that I used in this video.
      Thanks for your questions and thanks so much for watching!

    This video is kind of proof that just because you have a UA-cam channel, doesn’t mean you’re a professional.

    You should wear appropiate clothing and tie your hair at least.
