Not exactly true about pouring hot water down the sink. Material is a factor as well as water temperature.

As a matter of fact. I do encourage my clients to pour hot water from time to time to help melt grease build up.

@@SweetAdjeley ok. I'm speaking from 33 years in construction and 18 years running my company. The reason why some people will say not to pour hot water is because if the drain pipes are PVC, water 200 degrees or higher may cause some damage. If I t is of ABS, then the temperature will have to be much higher to cause damage, even higher for metal drain pipes. But hot water is also good for melting fat that might be built up in the pipe.
What I would advise is, before people start to freak you out because of their own experience, find out what kind of drainage you have.
