I vote for "How to stop stairs!" Hubby suggested I stop using the hand rail as I pull myself and the wet laundry to outdoors, he fears he's run out of room to re-bolt it in! 🙆 No pain just laboured motions!

I was skeptical because I actually need a knee replacement and will have the surgery fairly soon. In the meantime, I’ve been struggling with stairs. So, I tried this and it seems to work for me. I’m amazed because I thought turning my feet outward would cause instability and pain. Thank you!

Good morning, Will; I love watching your PT videos, they inspire me. I'm 70 and the knee, gluts , thighs and leg PT exercises speak to me. I walk 1 mile (20 minutes) 4x weekly and I attend balance and stretching classes a couple times a week. I'm just saying "thank you" for your clear instructions , helps me understand why it hurts and what to do. Thank You

Thank you for your video and advice. I followed your suggestions and my left knee pain in going up stairs has diminished by at least 50%. Much appreciated . Question: I run on my treadmill 3 x a week at about 3.5 mph. Is this helping or hurting my knee? Thanks

Thank you for the practical information on knee pain and stairs. We live in a 3-story house and I have found it good exercise climbing up and down 5-10 times a day, but lately my right knee has started to ache. I will take your advice on foot positioning during ascent and descent. Thanks again.

Good vid,I'm 64 and my knees have been hurting on the stairs now for about six months. The left one is the worst even when I'm walking it gives way which is annoying. The Dr seems to think it's arthritis.I like will's tips that I've just seen especially putting my whole foot on the tread.I'm going to try that today.i'll let you know how I get on.Happy walking everyone😂🇬🇧

I have pain kin both knees on climbing stairs. Dr diagnosed osteoarthritis - not surprising as I have it in my back, hands and one foot anyway. What I've never had is advice on dealing with it. This one tip of turning my foot to fit on my rather narrow stairs - and I have long feet - has made such a difference. Thank you. I'm working through your videos for other ideas too.

Interesting thanks, but I was distracted by the f&m hamper under the stairs, if it’s Fortunum and Mason (up market Uk London store) then could have been full of luxury goodies.. was waiting for a comment and if this does not crack open a bottle of Bollinger to drown your sorrows ‘ 😂

My teenage son was being a brat and said "At least I don't go up and down the stairs like an animal" I've stopped doing that. I asked my bud if she did that, she said yes, she's now been diagnosed with pre-osteoporosis. I'd noticed her back shoulders' hump for a few yrs now, she drinks 3 cokes a day and her stomach might be pulling some bone calcium away to help neutralize her stomach's lining!

All that plus 2 more tips I've learned elsewhere: 1- Whether walking or using stairs, keep your knee over your toes, not angled to one side or the other. (stopped my pain completely) 2- Going downstairs I do a duck walk, heel first with toes slightly angled outward. And I leave just the tip of my toes beyond the step so it won't catch on the rug and cause a fall.

Why us it easier to go downstairs putting the same foot forward first on each step, ( left, left, or right, right) but harder to alternate (left, right, left, right) ? I can't figure out if it's a knee problem, hip problem or lower back problem. I'm willing to work this out. But I can't figure out where the problem originates. It's painful holding my weight with the knee bent.

Strengthening all the gluteus muscles and lower back muscles have helped. Three months of targeted fitness exercises with a kinesiologist helped me understand the chain of anatomical movements.

How about walking up steps without a rail? Many steps leading to hotels, government offices etc do not have rails. For us senior folk - a rail is a welcome aid as we navigate steps or stairs….any tips regarding this because balance is not always perfect to “conquer” steps/ stairs without a handrail.
