Exercises that may be damaging your knees : 1. Inner Range Quads 2. Knee Extension Machine 3. Forward Lunge Alternatives: 1. Straight Leg Raise 2. Leg Press Machine 3. Reverse Lunge
Thank you so much Harlow. It feels somebody cares for the Seniors. Extremely useful contribution by you. You are correcting my mistakes & boosting my confidence. I am into high altitude trekking with a 30 years of lower back pain issue & of course, have worn out knees 🙏
It's my pleasure to be able to share my work with so many others, I'm so pleased it's able to offer support and to boost your confidence. I'm sorry to hear that you have been experiencing back and knee troubles - I hope my videos can offer guidance on how to address these areas!
@@debbiec6216watch Will’s video. He demonstrates reverse lunges in this video; as the preferred substitute for regular lunges where the leg comes forward and puts the stress on the knee. The leg goes backward and you are working the front leg.
I'm in my late 30's, and I recently started going to the gym to get fit and lose weight. I could not figure out why I was feeling knee pain going up and down stairs following leg day at the gym. Thanks to your video, I now know the problem is the leg extension machine. I'm female, 4'11", so my short size probably added to the problem. I already quit doing squats and forward lunges a while ago, because those exercises caused really bad knee pain for me in the days following the exercises. Otherwise, I have zero knee pain. Running, walking, etc,., no problem. Just squats, forward lunges, and, as I know now, gym machines have been causing knee pain. So, going forward, I will skip all the leg machines at the gym just to be safe. For leg day, I'll use loop bands instead. So glad I found your video, because it no doubt prevented future knee problems for me. I don't think this video isn't just for the 50+ plus crowd, it's for anyone who regularly works out and has been experiencing knee pain.
Since using his suggestions here in HT Physio combined with another great UA-camr, El Paso Physio, each with complimentary and realistic exercises for the over 50s, I have built strength my glutes and leg muscles and have not had a back or knee issue now for 3 years. 😊. Using their guides, I have been working on my grip strength and upper body strength for the past year and am seeing great results too. 😊😊
Knee extension machine. Fortunately i had a trainer who told me to never use it. It seemed an unnatural movement to me so i listened to him. Your book is arriving at my house today! Thank you for helping us enjoy movement
You wouldn't believe the resistance I've had from personal trainers and athletic trainers (U.S.) when I ask to exclude the leg extension machine from all workouts. Even as a healthy high school athlete with strong thighs I could hear the underside of my right patella crackle when doing the leg extension machine. I had very good form. My coaches just dismissed it as normal. I've now had multiple PTs advise against it. I include this entry just to warn some people they may run into those who disagree with taking out the leg extension machine. Trainers may try to talk you into using it. Hold firm. Your body. Your money. Find someone else if you need to. I haven't missed the machine at all.
I had a total knee replacement. The leg extension machine hurts my knee at the knee cap. My physical therapists wouldn’tlisten to me. They are not my therapists anymore. I started doing what you show here and that works so much better. Thanks for posting this video!
100% agree with this video. Also I think that some of the problem is people are not doing the exercises properly.I don’t think it’s a good idea to lock out fully on any exercise as it will over time damage your joints
So pleased I’ve watched this video.. I’ve been doing the leg extension and also forward lunges for rehab… my knee seems to be getting worse (my other knee feels aggravated too) had keyhole surgery last year (2 meniscus tears) I’ll definitely be trying the reverse lunge now and missing out the leg extension. Thank you so much
Informative and immediately useful. I shall avoid 'locked knees' exercises and those with forward momentum (Lunge, Pre-Workout Knee Bend), as I noticed they both cause pain in the knee cap front (patella), which lasts for days!
I’m learning British accent while I’m watching your videos. Your videos are really helpful , especially today’s video. I’ve been doing all these harmful exercises . Good grief !!!! Thanks a lot!!!

Tremendous advice these !! I feel it will do me a world of good in protecting my knees from further damage, which by the way, are a bit degenerative now.

Well! How useful was this video. Two of the three exercises shown lve been doing. No wonder l'm getting more pain. I've ditched the rolled up towel under the knee and have done the alternative. Oooooh much better. 👍
Yes you are right. First exercise damaged my knees instantly n resulted in more pain n making it impossible for me to do even leg raises. What shall I do now
I presented to my physio in March 2023 with what I thought was medial.meniscus pain in my right knee. He suggested it was likely fraying caused by osteoarthritis. He gave me some exercises that included leg extensions (what you young people call knee extensions). He suggested if I do the exercises and reduce my running load a little it should resolve within a few weeks or months. By June it was still bothering me (I was visiting the physio every few weeks), so I saw a sports doctor who ordered an MRI scan. This apparently showed some arthritis, some fraying or degeneration of the medial meniscus, an older partial tear of the ACL and some inflammation of the MCL. He advised me to continue to do the exercises from the physio. The knee pain, while fairly mild at first, slowly progressed to the point where the sports doctor recommended PRP injections at the end of the XC season, in late September (I actually won my club championship, so it wasn't very sore, until August). The PRP injections seemed to work initially, but once I returned to training, the pain returned. Then in November it became more severe. At that point I spoke to the physio and the senior sports doctor about it, but they both suggested another MRI scan would show nothing different, so just continue with the exercises. By Mid-December, I had to stop all running and even walking on the treadmill in the gym to warm up and cool down for my leg sessions was impossible. But still the advice was the same. Eventually I saw a different physio, my preferred one, but he is just so difficult to get into see, and he advised me to get a referral to see a local Orthopedic Surgeon, who ordered several xrays and another MRI. He has confirmed several things, first I do not have arthritis, second the original MRI showed deterioration in the meniscus and third there is a complex tear that wasn't in the original scan. I have a horizontal tear through the posterior horn and a partial radial tear through the body. He suggested arthroscopic surgery to clean it out. What really stands out for me is that the leg/knee extensions always made it sore, and may even have made the tears worse. I haven done any leg workouts for 2 or 3 weeks, because the meniscus pain is so bad after them. I haven't been able to decend stairs for 5 or 6 weeks, although this has finally changed this week, after ceasing the leg extensions several weeks ago. I'm likely to get the cleanout, but it hasn't been arranged yet. Thanks for the video.
I recently started a bands workout and the trainer has us doing lunges. My knees really don’t like it (was told I will def need both knees replaced). Thanks for the alternatives!
I have been diagnosed with pes anserine bursitis. Should I be doing squats? Despite what I have been advised I think they are too stressful on my knee. Your thoughts?
Will, love your channel, which has been so helpful for me. I had a medial meniscus tear, with surgery for it, but my knee has never been the same. I so find that continuing to exercise helps greatly. I also take meloxicam and tylenol extended release in combo during flareups of pain. Ive continued to do yoga since my injury but often wonder if there are poses I shouldnt do that may be aggravating my knee. Do you have any advice on that? One in particular that I wonder about is bow pose, a nice backward bend for the spine, but I worry its pulling my knees in a ba way. Any advice for yoga practitioners?
Please do you have a video with exercises to retrain a knee and upper leg to stop my knee turning inward... I've read that it is caused by a weak inner thigh and possibly an imbalance in the hips...
Hai bro i am 42 I had IT band issue on both legs it migrate into knee problems, IT band start die to I had heal spur and plantar can you suggest any exercise

I have patellar tendonitis, should I avoid these three exercises that you have mentioned in the gym
I recently started a bands workout and the trainer has us doing lunges. My knees really don’t like it (was told I will def need both knees replaced). Thanks for the alternatives!
Really great, what I needed, thank you 🌺
So pleased my video came at the right time for you!
Really helpful. Arthritis in my knee has got worse since meniscus tear repaired.
My sick knees will be grateful, needed these movements for better life care thanks immemsely🦵🦿
I hope they prove beneficial for you!
Great information! I have knee pain and will adjust my exercises.
Excellent explanation to correct our exercise 🙏🏻🇮🇳✋🏻💕
Happy to help!
I have been diagnosed with pes anserine bursitis. Should I be doing squats? Despite what I have been advised I think they are too stressful on my knee. Your thoughts?
I play badminton and cannot avoid forward lunges and recently there are knee pains, what exercises do you suggest to do?
Love your instruction.
Very pleased to hear that!
Could you do something on knee replacements as it relates to exercise.
Many thanks... Willl try these out once I hit the gym this evening.
Thanks for your help. I foolishly paid a "personal trainer" to damage my knees even further 😢 i should have listened to my own body
Please do you have a video with exercises to retrain a knee and upper leg to stop my knee turning inward... I've read that it is caused by a weak inner thigh and possibly an imbalance in the hips...
