2015 to 2019 was a dystopian era for fighting games. The games sold well, but no one that stuck around was happy. The trend was to appeal to esports spectators and the accompanying new generation. The main way to do this was to strip everything back and replace the lack of depth with canned spectacle like cinematic super moves and intentionally obstuctive big moments. Around 2019 and into 2020, everyone collectively decided that forced simplicity was a bad idea and changed course drastically. Nowadays, new fighting games are returning to incredible depth that the now experienced "new generation" can now fully appreciate.
@ratedr7845 ironically, Smash Ultimate was the first to correct course and led the way into this new era. Instead of taking things away, the whole gimmick is adding as much as possible. Not just in content, but in gameplay with how complicated some characters can get. That game showed that giving audiences what they want instead of what can make money the quickest can lead to unprecedented financial success.
It wasn't that rough...It was only rough to stupid people whom decided they don't need to pay attention to things, just like Aliens Colonial Marines....They literally stated for months before SFV launched that it was only going to be online, arcade and survival mode because they wanted to get it out for the Capcom cup, they literally stated for months that if you wanted a story mode to wait until the free update that was coming later with the story mode....They literally stated out loud for months what was releasing.
@@samshow8462yeah essentially, lol it’s ironic because the fact that there are so many people like these two above is the reason video games have been delving into mediocracy and pay to win. IRONY AT ITS FINEST
I always think it’s funny how SF4 also didn’t have a proper story mode and was played online exclusively. It was pretty much the same game as SF5. Yet nobody complains about one game but shuns the other. It really feels like most people in comment sections weren’t even there for SF4 launch and follow the hate to try to belong. SF5 was rough at launch but those were not the reasons
SFV has the greatest comeback story wow, started playing in 2020 and i did not know how awful it was internally, not even just street fighter but capcom. A major lesson learned from ALL devs.
Man the section where Max mentions "I don't even want to talk about the rootkit." Reminded me of one thing that I'm still salty about to this day. Admittedly something very few people care about, but I care. The whole story of Capcom announcing there would be a version of the game put out for Linux ("SteamOS" was the wording, but Linux) that Spring. That release never materialized, and we never got any updates. The capcom unity post I wanna say exists to this day, but no updates, no delays, no cancellation. "Linux version this spring." and it just...never happened, dead silence...
Well, gentlemen, here we are. Finally, at the door of a new era. Its been an honor to ride the rollercoaster that was the past decade or so with you all
The last minutes of this video really made me emotionnal , I remember booting SFV on release week as my first fighting game and being shit on and uninstalling it never to play it again till a year ago- seeing just how far this game has come to redeem it self is truly a beautiful thing. I'm typing this 15 minutes away from the release of SF6 . SFV maybe wasnt the greatest game ever , but it was special and it allowed SF6 to Strive.
I was so pissed with the end of season 5. Big secret mystery character. Who's it going to be? Speculation runs rampant, everyone wants it to be their favorite or a liked crossover character. Big reveal comes.... LUKE!! Everyone on Earth "..... Who?"
This retrospective series was amazing! I love hearing the history of fighting games from someone who was there. I’d love to see one of these for the MK series when MK1 comes out!
Honestly, I feel like they would’ve been better off if they never back-ported Luke from SF6 to SFV. The decision honestly did more damage to his reputation than it helped. With that aside, it’s impressive how much Capcom was able to redeem SFV.
Oh Max. No matter how much I wanted to hear you take this video approach to the EX games, don't EVER apologise for putting family, life, and physical/mental health first. Because guess what? You still got the message across as early - I feel - as the SF II Turbo video. And while I won't jump to SF6 immediately - mostly because of the price tag - I've been motivated to go back and enjoy the games I can play and can afford, namely SFV and HSF II. I will DEFINITELY come back to SF6 when I can. So genuinely, thankyou for making these videos a perfect blend of nostalgia for pros and insight for the casual audience. I think that especially speaks to the core of how broad your audience is and how your content can click with me who predominantly plays RPGs and platformers. Kudos Max, loved these videos, and they are so easy to binge watch because of how digestible they are.
19:13 This, right here is exactly why multiplayer games as a whole got boring around the time SFV launched. Every big name was trying to make EVERYONE a competitive player. I love that SF6 gives you the tools to learn to be a competitive player, but they don't try and sell the game as nothing but competitive fighting. Because in the end, we play games to have a damn good time.
I'll never forget when playing sf5 at launch, when I finally got a match online to earn fight coins and won, my opponents would dc every fucking time so they would not suffer a loss and I would never get coins or rank points for it. EVERY DAMN MATCH IT HAPPENED! And capcom did nothing about it for a very long time.
I remember seeing the SF5 trailer and all of my friends just go... "What the hell happened?". We all felt that there wasn't a real change from SF4 and that the art style really needed to come to terms with. Glad to see that the SF team really brought it back to such hype material and that we can look back at it with actual happiness instead of copium.
Nothing to apologize for, brother. You being the type of person who prioritizes his family over his content is why we're here and happy to support you.
I always wanted to play street fighter five... and i know some people who "criticize" the game by just hating on it and praising street fighter four a lot.. idc what anyone says ive seen gameplay of it and its something i think i would have fun playing. With cutscenes in the arcade mode, seeing what characters have rivalries with and the story mode in general. I have never played a street fighter game before but if i do, the first on i want to get is SFV. And if you want to reply with me saying stuff on how i "bash" other street fighter games when ive never played one.... just shut up. I dont think SFIV is a bad game and i KNOW people love it. Its a classic, but personally i would have a BLAST playing SFV. Just my opinion, dont hate on me.
You dont have to apologize max you know we understand but man. What a story of SFV. I dont think a lot of new causuals will know how in the dump Capcom was during SFV.
Also that Laura bit in the story was not bad It is on point, it is literally every latin american sibling relationship ever, we are very phisical and treat each other like shit
This is the Capcom I remember from my late teens/ early twenties. Where they were knocking it out of the park with every game. These last few years have been a revival for their brand starting with Resident Evil 2 Remake. A game that I and my friends were waiting on for over 20 years. And it was a masterpiece. It had been years since I was so excited for a game. And they've been hitting homeruns every since (Resident Evil 3 Remake not withstanding). Watch. I'm telling you. There's going to be a Street Fighter Alpha 4. Just wait. I'm bullshittin. LOL There probably won't be, but with the way things have been going the last few years...
It can be argued that their big comeback was emerging with Resident Evil 7's announcement, which also goes hand in hand with how they were lowkey coming back at the end of season 4 of SFV, but yeah, even if it wasn't sudden, it became clear with these big changes coming around.
This was such a brilliant series! I really hope he does the other games soon because this really left me wanting more. Binged the whole series and I was glued to every word.
There was so much insightful commentary throughout this Street Fighter legacy. I really enjoyed this change in format for the legacy videos. Now I'm really hyped to play the game, and see where it goes from here. Can't believe it's been 7 years, but it's really here. We're finally living in the SF6 era! Really hope you consider in revisiting this approach to more legacy videos with Tekken and Mortal Kombat down the line, too!

Man this legacy series was the best yet. Makes me not wanna do anything else but just play and appreciate this wild ride we’ve all been on. Street Fighter has literally been apart of my life since birth. I’m so happy and proud to see where we’re at with it now. Makes being a Capcom creator that much sweeter.
What a banger of a series dood. Going back and exploring new ways to experience the old games, providing the development history, and your own personal experiences just feels like three solid video series in to just one!
Art!
Its so good to see a man talk about something you love with all that passion, we dont deserve you Max.
Bro the channel is a highlight of my week WITH THAT SAID! The LITTLE ONE COMES FIRST BRO! Youll be always at your best when your family is thriving first! Thanks for the awesome content i listen to it on the way to work or while catching a meal. Thanks !
I, among many, started playing fighting games because of you and YoVideogames, Max. I remember watching your SFV streams and got inspired to buy and learn the game. It's been a long time coming for Street Fighter/Capcom to return to another golden age and I've never been so excited for a new fighting game since Guilty Gear Strive.
This version of the Street Fighter legacy was an amazing watch through and through. Shoutout to the editors and thank you Max/YoVideogames for all the good times over the years! Shine on and see y'all in the streets!
Watched your entire SF series and you caught me up! Thanks! Alpha 3 and a little of IV was my cut off. Getting SF6 today, got a fightstick and gonna start my training! Hope to see you out there!
We appreciate everything you do Max. Take care of your family!
Watching this T-Minus 90 minutes before SF6 drops... We've come a long way from SFV (although it was fun in the end)! Shine on in the new streets everyone!
You don't have to apologize, if you have life issues at home take care of them first and take your time doing it, we'll still be here waiting for you bro.
Street Fighter 6 will be my serious entry to fighting games since Tekken 3 and KoF '98, and its all thanks to Max. I really love this channel.
Loved this whole series Dood. No need to apologize. Hope everything is all good with your daughter.
“Dan is one of the smartest characters“
At that moment the attack was completely facing away from the enemy at the wall and still hits LMAO
Joining the SF community with SF5 was like being born in a small village. You love it because it's the first thing you knew, but man, when you move to the big city...
18:47 i remember seeing this for the 1st time as a kid... When I say I felt every emotion all at once while reading this
You're a family man max don't apologize for taking care of them. Hope she gets well soon can't wait for tonight's stream!!!!
Osu! This was my first serious adventure into the street fighter games. Thank you for being my guide through it all Max. See in the queues online Max.
Max is one of the greatest story tellers ever...this approach to the SF Legacy where youre explaining the history behind each part of the series instead of JUST playing thru them is so dope because if how much you learn about capcom the SF series as a whole and BIIIGGGG HUGE shout out to the editor(s) who put these together becuz their timing and placement of references and clips, etc. really rounded out the videos...and adding that SF6 theme at the end REALLY gave this story a finish line! ....videos like this i could always come back and listen to all over again! Thank you, Max
yo man, nothing but the best for your family. hope she's feeling better and everyone's in higher spirits
GGST feels like a remnant of that, ah well, hope the next game returns to its roots
@theotherjared9824 I mean it wasn't a dystopian era in those games
i loved sfV. just the start was so rough...and the thirst was real
@@lutherheggs451 And Stupid people would buy a car to wait for the wheels to arrive 6 months later or buy SFV on release date and complain
@@lutherheggs451 so what your saying is, people should feel bad for wanting a complete and decent game, for 60$?
Man the section where Max mentions "I don't even want to talk about the rootkit."
Reminded me of one thing that I'm still salty about to this day.
E. Honda in SFV was the best version of that character, fucking incredible redux. Went from a meh don’t care character to loving that guy
You deinstalled it not because the game was bad but because you got shit on right?
Great playlist Max! I started watching your videos during the sf5 betas, feels so nostalgic hahaha thanks for the amazing content!
It feels like new years eve, I'm kinda sad but happy at the same time. I will remember SFV fondly.
It's a feeling of moving on to a new chapter. Letting go and stepping into something completely fresh.
I was so pissed with the end of season 5. Big secret mystery character. Who's it going to be? Speculation runs rampant, everyone wants it to be their favorite or a liked crossover character.
Big reveal comes.... LUKE!! Everyone on Earth "..... Who?"
I hope Ripley is ok! Family always comes first, Max.
This retrospective series was amazing! I love hearing the history of fighting games from someone who was there. I’d love to see one of these for the MK series when MK1 comes out!
A big redemption arc indeed 🤣
We love you Max! BE A FAMILY MAN UNAPOLOGETICALLY!
Honestly, I feel like they would’ve been better off if they never back-ported Luke from SF6 to SFV. The decision honestly did more damage to his reputation than it helped. With that aside, it’s impressive how much Capcom was able to redeem SFV.
Nah you just dont like him cause he is white
I loved sf5’s art direction (besides the story mode art) i really wish it had a basic arcade mode with rival cutscenes at launch
The baby is always first, ALWAYS. You do what you gotta do for your family first and foremost. We’ll always wait for our favorite Dood.

This, right here is exactly why multiplayer games as a whole got boring around the time SFV launched.
SF5 looked amazing on launch tho it was part of the reason the game was so promising
This is by far, my favorite legacy series so far, well fu***** done dood
Chegamos até aqui com um misto de tristeza e alegria pelo que o jogo se tornou
Olá outro Espectador BR do Maximilian

Eae galerada BR! Animados pra jogar SF6 em uma hora?
Laura, Sean, Blanka, or Brazilian Ken?
Thanks for the retrospectives Max this was a fun series to watch!
You dont have to apologize max you know we understand but man. What a story of SFV. I dont think a lot of new causuals will know how in the dump Capcom was during SFV.
Them harsh beginnings for SF5 were wild…hardly recognize that game today
Amazing series. SF6 is going to be the first one I pick up and the series was so good to get even more hype!
Welcome! 6 looks to be an amazing starting point
Flower akuma is my new spirit animal
Also that Laura bit in the story was not bad
It is on point, it is literally every latin american sibling relationship ever, we are very phisical and treat each other like shit
As a guy from South America, I can confirm that :)
"My daughter got sick so I'm sorry".
Dude, that's nothing to be sorry for, family over everything else, always. Good on you mate!
It's always the even numbered Street Fighter Installments that get the universal acclaim mainly SF2, SF4 and now SF6.
And Street Fighter Alpha, known in Japan as Street Fighter 0!
Yeah, installing rootkits on every PC that bought SFV and never apologizing, now that's redemption!!!!
5 words to describe SV5.
Rushed, greed, neglect, censoring, and empty.
Rushed, greed, neglect, reflection, change, rebirth.
Thank you Max, that was a great series! Hopefully you can do the same for the additional SF games such as Mvc and EX in the future.
0:04 Street Fighter 5
There was so much insightful commentary throughout this Street Fighter legacy. I really enjoyed this change in format for the legacy videos. Now I'm really hyped to play the game, and see where it goes from here. Can't believe it's been 7 years, but it's really here. We're finally living in the SF6 era!
Really hope you consider in revisiting this approach to more legacy videos with Tekken and Mortal Kombat down the line, too!
unpopular opinion but falke made me really enjoy sfv she just matched my preferred playstyle and i liked all the stuff she had with her normals to her projectiles having to hold down a button, then when they added her v skill 2, unfortunately i feel like i may never see her again do to not being super popular and in sf6 if they add another neo shadaloo character after ed down the line it will be one of the others teased in eds character story in sfv but she will always be remembered as the reason that sfv got saved for me personally
Both Falke and Ed were in leaked roster of 6...
@@chupasaurus falke wasnt in the leaks, ed was the leaks had the base roster and the 4 dlc which at the time people thought was also base roster, if falke shows up in ed's arcade story when he comes out then i would give her a chance to show up
When he said "and that brings us to today" it hit midnight 😂
I hope your daughter feels better Max
Thank you.
Flower Akuma isn't real, he can't hurt you...
