The reason the shirt was changed is more likely to avoid copyright infringement from the clothing brand Zubaz, which is the same reason the character is called The Baz, with Zubaz taken off his shirt in all of his indie game appearances.
The clothing brand Zubaz was at one point also co-owned by The Road Warriors/Legion of Doom, basically the inspiration for every face painted mohawked wrestler you see in fiction.

King Cobra being scrapped is a big mistake on Capcom he look to be a very threatening character and him being a rival to Ken would have been interesting their fights could have been so intense like Ryu and Sagat fights this a very missed opportunity.
My big takeaway from Menat is that the character we got is great and I wouldn't want her gone, but now I want her older designs (namely "Rita") to become separate characters. Let's get justice for Pizza Assassin!
P--Pizza...PIZZA TOWER? *shot with extreme prejudice* But yeah, I hope the Irish/Italian-looking pizza gal finally exists again. Unused character concepts are always fun!
I love the idea behind Rita, but I really want the evil magician character to become canon. I LOVE the idea of a female street magician who uses playing cards as weapons. Like a fusion between Gambit and Zattana if she were a member of a street gang!
That evil magician girl that was a student of Rose and is also trying to kill her I would love to see in the future as a rival to Menat. Maybe she was a student that Rose would see as “her greatest failure” and would never mention her to Menat so I think it would be interesting to see how Menat and this failed student would interact.
If having reference many mangas/animes is quite hard. Then they could make her a Capcom fan. Have her like she grew up playing old Capcom games because of her parents, and now she's got the fascination for the company. to clear up something fairly minor in this video, i assume tahir meyer's fighting style being described as "strong" style refers to a type of japanese wrestling known as strong style, which involves a lot of heavy and impactful strikes mixed with technical grappling and submissions. again, it's something minor but it kind of gives you a better idea of what it could be with him being a wrestler and all
I don't know how well-known Killer Instinct was in Japanese arcades, but KI's Riptor predates both SF3's unnamed raptor and Tekken 2's Alex, since that game was released in arcades in 1994.
What's pretty interesting is that Ringal was in Star Gladiator, and the Fourth Empire's Radar Site, where you would fight the character most of the time in the arcade ladder, has a musical theme that starts with the same chord progression as Killer Instinct's main theme, though otherwise remains very different. Other cool musical stuff: though I don't think they ripped-off any Tekken design for SFIII, there is a case to be made in how dynamic music change between rounds in Third Strike is similar in how it is implemented in the arcade version of Tekken 3. There is also a case to be made between Jin's arcade theme from Tekken 3 and Jamie's theme from SF6, though again we're talking inspiration, not plagiarism.
nope Riptor is clearly a jurassic park reference difficult to predate a character that don't exist Alex was instead a roger ironically Riptor is more closed to the velociraptor of the anime
And neither are fucking velociraptors! Nor Deinonychus, they aren't even dinosaurs. I hate that jurassic park design and its propagation to this day, just the pronanted hands send me into fits. Im glad that the character never saw the light of day.
Yknow I already didn't like Rufus but finding out about King Cobra has me absolutely HEARTBROKEN. His fur lined gi and implied personally is immediately charming. Mix that with SF also severely lacking black rep and I am hurting
@@frozenvoltz6739 yeah on second thought I was definitely wrong about that, especially with SF6. King Cobra still would've been a very welcome addition though
21:10 from what I seen in old articles about that early Abel design he is still a boy not a girl. He is supposed to be a boy mistaken for a girl, but I guess they pulled it off so well that lots of people just think he is a girl. Here is the quote I saw "With Abel, we wanted to make someone representative of 'the weak can beat the strong,' and so he was originally a small judo character who could be mistaken for a girl."
Learning about cut characters is a double edged sword. On one hand you get to learn about cool characters and on the other you really wish they made some of these cool characters
10:19 Actually most likely the real reason for the zubaz getting erased is that zubaz is actually a clothing brand synonymous with wrestling so probably fearing a lawsuit for their 30th anniversary art gallery they covered the text
Great video! There are a couple things I’ve noticed while watching though. - The original wrestling character of SF2 using a “Strong” style is, to me, almost guaranteed to mean “Strong Style Wrestling.” Strong Style is the traditionally Japanese form of pro wrestling that is making it seem more real by, pretty much, beating the shit out of your opponent. Of course not legitimately trying to hurt or injure your opponents, but it makes those matches much more impactful. Modern day wrestler Shinsuke Nakamura is even nicknamed “The King of Strong Style.” - The Zubaz name being removed is most definitely not because some guys at Capcom knew about The Baz, but instead for the same reason that “The Baz” name exists: Legality. Zubaz is the name of a clothing company which was popular in the 90’s. The company is still around today and the name on the character is likely just giving an idea of what it might look like or is inspired by. The reason The Baz name exists is because whoever would try to use the Zubaz name would almost immediately get sued.
I was about to make a similar comment about the origins of the name Zubaz. Since it already exists, I'll just add the following: When Zubaz brand workout pants were first invented, they were heavily associated with the pro wrestling tag-team the Road Warriors, who wear facepaint just like The Baz does.
Rufus really looks as if he was designed overnight. King Cobra looks awesome, I would love to have seen him in the game, he even looks like main-material and a way better rival to Ken. A rival should be visibly similar to whom he rivals and King Cobra is close enough to Ken to be that. 33:28 This kind of looks like Yua from the World Tour Mode from SF6,...a bit...
SFV’s “Puck Bunny” is so funny to me because that term is typically meant to denote someone who knows nothing about hockey but hangs around the rink because the guys are hot
20:23 There reaches a point where it goes beyond "alternate character designs" and is just "we at Capcom just really like drawing art of this character; she's awesome."
There are a good number of video game characters based on Tiger Mask, most famously King from Tekken. Among 80s wrestlers he's up there with Riki Choshu in terms of name recognition among the average person in Japan, so that shouldn't be too surprising.
11:10 I am pretty sure it's because the Zubaz on his shirt was almost identical to the Zubaz logo of the clothing company. I'm pretty sure it's also why in guest appearances he's called "The Baz" as well. Zubaz was a fairly popular clothing company in the early 90s when the concept art would have originally been made, but while they might not be a household name today, the company still exists and presumably would protect their trademark if the actual name Zubaz was used in any game.
33:10 pretty sure most of the designs featured here are for Neo Shadaloo chatacters and not M.Bison Shadaloo. You can see some of them wearing Ed's costume which he only started wearing AFTER Bison died and Shadaloo fell. From what i can piece together Ed, as the leader of Neo Shadaloo, has his own Four Heavenly Kings which we see in his story ending in SFV. And some of the designs were for who the other 3 kings around Ed could be. The 3 monkies thing makes more sense that way. I think though some of these characters can still be used as members of Neo Shadaloo just not as the main 4 at the top.
This video makes me want to take a look at designs scrapped by Arc System Works. ASW's official designs are some of the wildest. I can only imagine what their cut characters look like.
The saga of king cobra to Rufus reminds me of the simpsons episode where homer sees a cool tv character with the same name as his ,only to later change him into a doofus.
The whole Zubaz being a mysterious character that shows up in any indie game made me think back to a fighting game fanart concept where every character was a background character, characters that never made it in a game, original characters trying to become official characters and characters that are extremely unlikely to be in an official game due to licensing issues in the ultimate fighting game where the tagline was "The fighting game nobody believed"
I say this as a big fan of Menat who loves her design - I would kill to see Rita and Pizza Assassin return someday. Those are just fun silly designs I would love to see more of. I also say this as a… not a fan, but someone who still mildly likes Rufus - just bring back King Cobra already. They’re different characters at this point too canonically, as Capcom made official art for him in the SF5 cycle. Make it official.
Menats concept art "sisters" could become their own characters practically (pizza assasin & soulpowered otaku being standouts) And King Cobra would be a great adition , hope they revisit his design & make him official sadly there is no official art of him from what i can find so he is not canon.. yet!
We need more Rival Schools characters in Street Fighter and I know Batsu and Tiffany will eventually get in they are too popular besides Akira to not get in Street Fighter but Akira is just the beginning.
Asuka & Rita seem like neat concepts that could fit in the world SF6 seems to be building. Also to bounce off what someone in the comments were saying, King Cobra coming back would be neat, but it seems like the "breakdancing fighter" schtick seems to have been more or less taken by Jamie. Also I was thinking of legacy characters that could come into SF6 in the future, an older Tiffany could be an awesome Rival School rep. She's one of the more popular characters from that series yet to be playable in another game now that Akira showed up in 5, haha.
Well, I'd like to vision that the older Tiffany would look like her Street Fighter 3 promo art design. For Asuka, she could be Makoto's little sister resembling one of Makoto's early designs and for more hypothetical Rita lore, she could tell Marisa that she could lift up an entire city with her pinky finger much like how overpowered anime characters could pick up things way bigger and heavier than themselves. The anime characters that Rita's skills could take influence from would be Shonen Jump protagonists mainly Son Goku (Dragon Ball), Yusuke Urameshi (Yu Yu Hakusho) and Jotaro Kujo (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure). What do you think?
I was thinking of roy when he was talking about presidents and Tiffany. Roy becomes a president in the future. But he could be a representative in the present. And Tiffany was his bodyguard in one of the endings.

Zubaz is a type of pants. They are typically wavey and full of weird and wild colors, and were super popular for wrestlers to wear in the 80s and 90s. Likely why the name was removed: it's a brand!
I would like to input on Tahir Meyer being a wrestler with a "strong style" I believe this may refer to the Japanese strong style professional wrestling where they worked out that the best way to look like you're hitting each other really hard is to actually hit each other really hard.

...No wonder why we ended up with F.A.N.G. Some of these scrapped Shadaloo characters made him look normal in comparison. Overall, this was a fun ride to go through. It really shows how much Street Fighter had gone through in terms of character designs and I admitted wanted to see some of the scrapped ones in a mainline. (Except for the Beast Man and the guy who has the "world's strongest scabs" of course).
@@Xetyou that a very good question. heck these two from the "speak no evil and hear no evil" possible as a villain characters by design itself but the "see no evil" person is very weird a literally monkey grab person face and that person can't see but monkey can see and sound very meta if something else i had nothing to said that.
I think that F.A.N.G.'s biggest issue wasn't his design, but the way he was written and animated. I think that the character design is okay, but the way he moves and flaps his arms around constantly just makes him look like a small child wearing his dad's clothes. I could legitimately see the design working if they made him come across as cold and calculated, leaning into a more mysterious angle, but instead they decided that they wanted to double down on the idea that the sleeves were like wings and decided that every scene needed him to flap his arms and never stop pacing around and spinning. Honestly, he should have spent most of the game perched on a high ledge ominously, silently observing and waiting for a moment when his target was at a disadvantage. I feel like the visual design implies that he should be kind of like a mix between a spitting cobra and vulture: swooping in to fend off bruised and beaten fighters with his poison attacks to incapacitate them before dragging incapacitated fighters away to an unknown location to create a supply of test subjects for Bison's latest run of experiments. I guess that they wanted a comic relief character, but they completely failed to take advantage of the fact that the design is legitimately unsettling (his proportions are really uncanny and freakish with his strange, distended face and enormous monster hands. He should really have been much more cold and calculated, kind of showing up in the background during the story mode for the most part and having his motivations be less explicit until the late game, which would be when you actually saw him fight and got a good look at him for the first time.) Crucially, my imagined version barely speaks and definitely doesn't spend scenes bickering with the other two sub bosses whilst never standing still. I know that mute characters can be a bit overdone in fighting games, but F.A.N.G. really would have had so much more going for him with most of his dialogue removed and maybe even having no vocal cords at all. If you're familiar with Dr Phibes (a mad scientist character played by Vincent Price, who lost his ability to speak in a car accident that also killed his wife and takes revenge on the people he considers responsible for her death. His MO is kind of similar to Jigsaw from Saw in that he abducts people and sets up life and death challenges for them and he also served as partial inspiration for V in V For Vendetta, with the lair, dancing scene and several other aspects of the character taking direct inspiration from Phibes) I would have gone for something along those lines for any dialogue. He would only speak through an artificial voice and the explanation for him being the way he is would be left up to the imagination for the most part, with him possibly even being shown eating by unhinging his jaw and swallowing things whole, leaning into the venomous snake/bird motif with some explicit body horror.

So much cool stuff! Y'know, when they used the argument of "they had too many of X" to put a character in, I can respect that...if they didn't Dan, Ryu, Sean, Ken, and Akuma all running around. King Cobra could have been a really cool character. However, like above, with so many gi wearing flavors of shoto running around, could definitely see him not being used. Heck, I could even see "we have Sean at home" as an argument and folks wondering why they didn't just put some respect on Sean's name and give that character a glow up. Instead...we got Rufus. XD Well, hope King C could make an appearance down the line, particularly if Ken is going through a rough patch, King Cobra is an up and comer in the American fighting scene. Hell, maybe he wants to beat the man back into shape or is pissed that he didn't have a chance to dethrone Ken before the guy dropped out or something. Being a Sagat type rival for Ken could be neat. Malaysian Military Woman is a enthusiastic hell yeah. Everything about her is fantastic and fits right in. The hockey character. Its ridiculous but I love it. Similarly, Asuka (?) the Japanese aikido design is clean as hell. Bit been there done that but still. Solid. Dude, those Menat character concepts. Love the evil card wielder concept and Rita. Less thrilled with the Pizza Assassin but hey, why not?
I feel with cobra they could do a backstory of him knowing Ryu and Ken before the world tournament back in alpha days. He could be the inspiration behind the gi on Ryu of Sf4. He basically missed out on the tournaments because of wanting to improve his strength and signature style. On sf6 they could have him being a disciple of Oro and be the main character for DLC story. If not oro path, his fighting style could be based off of kyokushin instead of shotokan karate. Imagine him throwing a different color projectile, a more heavy based style like Ryo from Art of fighting. That or he could also have been absent because of being an agent like C. Viper. So many paths to choose from
Wow, that was such a dramatic downgrade from king cobra to rufus. I would like to see some of those early Menat designs make it into full characters sometime, though. But I'd also like to see Menat herself make it into SF6. Even though I don't really play zoners, she was always one of the new character designs in SF5 that I liked the most.

On both fronts the reason zubaz was removed from his shirt and the fan character was renamed baz because theres a clothing company named Zubaz and didnt want to get sued. Im not kidding

Late to the party by a decade but I'm mad now
King Cobra being scrapped is a big mistake on Capcom he look to be a very threatening character and him being a rival to Ken would have been interesting their fights could have been so intense like Ryu and Sagat fights this a very missed opportunity.
Agreed. King Cobra looks really cool. It would be cool if they brought him to Street Fighter 6.

Hey, it's soul power! The evil magician girl could be Menat's evil side that split off, something akin to King Piccolo. 🤷🏾♂️
Streetfighter needs more Rivals.
I seriously want to see Rita become a playable character in SF6. I would love to play a soul-powered otaku delinquent.
If having reference many mangas/animes is quite hard. Then they could make her a Capcom fan. Have her like she grew up playing old Capcom games because of her parents, and now she's got the fascination for the company. Of course Final Fight and Rival Schools would have to be excluded to not cause a Paradox or something, but it's an idea.

to clear up something fairly minor in this video, i assume tahir meyer's fighting style being described as "strong" style refers to a type of japanese wrestling known as strong style, which involves a lot of heavy and impactful strikes mixed with technical grappling and submissions. again, it's something minor but it kind of gives you a better idea of what it could be with him being a wrestler and all
I don't know how well-known Killer Instinct was in Japanese arcades, but KI's Riptor predates both SF3's unnamed raptor and Tekken 2's Alex, since that game was released in arcades in 1994.
That’s what I was thinking when he was talking about Alex 😂😂
nope Riptor is clearly a jurassic park reference
difficult to predate a character that don't exist Alex was instead a roger ironically Riptor is more closed to the velociraptor of the anime
And neither are fucking velociraptors! Nor Deinonychus, they aren't even dinosaurs. I hate that jurassic park design and its propagation to this day, just the pronanted hands send me into fits. Im glad that the character never saw the light of day.

Learning about cut characters is a double edged sword. On one hand you get to learn about cool characters and on the other you really wish they made some of these cool characters
And then you see how many bad designs get canned along the way lmao.
The See No Evil design sounds like something straight out of Bobobo-Bo-Bo-BoBo...I love it.
10:19 Actually most likely the real reason for the zubaz getting erased is that zubaz is actually a clothing brand synonymous with wrestling so probably fearing a lawsuit for their 30th anniversary art gallery they covered the text
Holy shit! They could turn most of Juri's concept art into actual skins. Some of them look amazing
Modern day wrestler Shinsuke Nakamura is even nicknamed “The King of Strong Style.”
- The Zubaz name being removed is most definitely not because some guys at Capcom knew about The Baz, but instead for the same reason that “The Baz” name exists: Legality.
Nakamura has gone soft in recent years
@@RazorsEdge701 I never actually connected the dots with the Road Warriors connection, that’s sick! Makes sense too, massive tag team in Japan.
20:23 There reaches a point where it goes beyond "alternate character designs" and is just "we at Capcom just really like drawing art of this character; she's awesome."
as an artist i find un used concept art as great source of inspirtion and endless pool of potential
"one man's trash is another man's treasure"

Exactly my thoughts 😅
Fascinating how much of SF2's roster was almost a Baki the Grappler fangame, down to multiple of those cut characters

Rita and assassin pizza girl could totally appear in a potential rival schools 3.

I love how each and every potential design for Menat, even up to Pizza Assasin is fire not a single one looked bad
That wrestler with a Tiger Mask is clearly inspire by the actual Tiger Mask wrestler that even had a pretty succesful manga and anime.
Yup I agree
Guess SNK nabbed the inspiration before capcom (ramon)
There are a good number of video game characters based on Tiger Mask, most famously King from Tekken. Among 80s wrestlers he's up there with Riki Choshu in terms of name recognition among the average person in Japan, so that shouldn't be too surprising.
Fun fact that's kinda relevant: Ton Poo from the Strider series was the base for Chun Li. Shoutouts to the real og Chinese Empress of Capcom.
I love looking at concept arts. Street Fighter is one of my favorite to look at. Juri Han and Menat has the coolest looking concept arts
This video makes me want to take a look at designs scrapped by Arc System Works. ASW's official designs are some of the wildest. I can only imagine what their cut characters look like.
the weirdest scrapped designs here are some of the most basic arcsys character designs lmao.

Cmon Malaysian girl was awesome and you know it
The concept of "See no evil, Hear no Evil, and speak no evil" sounds interesting... but why did they make them that of all things?!
He should really have been much more cold and calculated, kind of showing up in the background during the story mode for the most part and having his motivations be less explicit until the late game, which would be when you actually saw him fight and got a good look at him for the first time.)
Crucially, my imagined version barely speaks and definitely doesn't spend scenes bickering with the other two sub bosses whilst never standing still.

Please do this for Mortal Kombat when the new game comes out, there are a lot of interesting scrapped characters there too (Belokk and Zebron probably being some of the most well-known)
I kinda want those cut characters in MK1 now
Zebron even as an assist karacter would make me buy the game asap.
@@kamatariedgar3603 I want him playable myself but an assist figher will do
Also Baphomet ( the previous ruler of the netherrealm)
Every time i see The Baz in Petal Crash, i cannot stop but smile in pride and say to myself "That was me, i got him there!"
the italian punk otaku is something id love to return but probably won't
Rita the Italian otaku and assassin pizza girl could totally appear in a potential rival schools 3.
I totally see them as foreign students like Tiffanny.
hell someone just make these characters a thing in *something* please-
13:39 I know it'll probably never happen but I'd love to see a Primal Rage retrospective sometime.
Can we get more rival school characters seeing a late 20s early 30s batsu, natsu, roy ,robert and tiffany seeing them achieve their dreams or right there batsu having glassing looking a bit like his dad mixed with his school outfit. Roy looking like cody jp and g all professional but ready to throw hands. Tiffany would have fighting gloves like cammy and mixture of manons and sf6 cammys outfit being roys bodyguard.
So many cool designs that I just know would've been loved by the community- but girl who secretly cosplays and Menat w/ incense are so good. Also when you showed THE BAZ, a flood of excitement came over me.

I really like a lot of thess designs
Especially the previous menat designs

@@Alexcobra861 That's a thought!
Viper. So many paths to choose from
New Generation (prior to becoming Street Fighter III) could have been a VERY wild game.
Bless you for giving the full lore breakdown on Zubaz and the old best friends channel. I will add that Zubaz also won the belt at VGCW an old wrestling game tournament with create a characters and it was an insane match.
The Zubaz might have been removed because Zubaz is already a legally trademarked brand.
I am very curious if the scrapped dinosaur for Street Fighter III inspired Hauzer. Considering Red Earth came out before Street Fighter III in the arcades it makes me wonder if this was considered for SFIII during its development.
Honestly the moment i saw the dinosaur i was thinking more about the beat 'em up cadillacs and dinosaurs
Hauzer definitely was an inspiration
@@TheOneSymphony It’s really no coincidence
reading "combat vocaloid" in those heavenly kings designs hit me in the gut with a power I could not have imagined. That is fucking genius, how didn't they approve this in any way.
Hatsune Miku: What's in it for me?
M. Bison: I will give you the satisfaction of snuffing out another human life!
That Golem from SF3's concept art looks an awful lot like Paul Wegener's Golem. That's... a pretty wild cut, I'll say.
So……King Cobra was gonna be Zack, the Black Ranger? I can dig it.
Zubaz is a clothing brand, so I'm guessing that's why they scrubbed it from the sketch. Also probably why he's always "The Baz" in games. I'm guessing that's why they wrote it on his shirt to begin with, to denote what brand he's repping.
On both fronts the reason zubaz was removed from his shirt and the fan character was renamed baz because theres a clothing company named Zubaz and didnt want to get sued. Im not kidding
