  • Here it is. One of the most debated and controversial topics in the gun world. What is the Best Concealed Carry Gun available? My cousin Brian is dead set on the idea that the 3" 1911 is the best concealed carry option that money can buy. He makes a strong argument but that's still a really bold statement.
    Listen to what he has to say and then let me know down in the comments, what do you think is the best concealed carry gun out there?

    In the beginning you say that the reliability of a 1911 can't be beat, and at the end you say it's high maintenance and that Glocks are more reliable.

      @tonycurtis4282 8 років тому +9

      I have had both Glocks and many variants of the 1911. My 1911's have proven every bit as reliable as my Glocks.
      Actually, what he said is that you need to run the gun "wet". In other words, just keep it oiled. I'm not talking dripping wet. There are a ton of videos on properly oiling a 1911. If it's a carry gun, that certainly is never an issue, as smart people maintain the gun they use for CC.

      I watched the video one year hence and stand by my previous statement: Brian goes from declaring the 3" 1911 to be the best concealed handgun ever made, to saying that it's finicky, high maintenance and needs special treatment to be reliable, while a Glock will fire every time no matter what in the space of five minutes. That's called cognitive dissonance.
      He also says there's not a single person in the world who won't argue that the 1911 has the best trigger in the world. Clearly this is not true.
      He also seems to imply that the 1911 is a particularly safe gun to carry. Everything he mentions in that regard can be said about a slew of other guns. The 1911 is also heavy AF and I'm just not willing to carry two pounds of steel in my pants going about my day.
      I really don't have a dog in the fight (I only make this comment to point out the inconsistencies in cousin Brian's reasoning). I own both Glocks and 1911s that I like and enjoy shooting recreationally and keep for home defense, but I would never carry either due to bulk and weight considerations. Whenever I carry (frankly, not that often), it's a smaller gun, like a S&W Shield 9mm or even a Ruger LCP. I just don't buy into the stopping power legend of the .45 ACP, but to each his own. I think I've read somewhere that more people are killed with .22LR than any other caliber, but I might be wrong.
      The capacity of any given firearm is a moot point for me because I can't carry anything with more than 10 rounds in the magazine in my state legally anyway (thanks, Gov. Malloy!). I know it's become somewhat of a cliché, but the best carry gun in the world is the one you have when you need it. Just make sure you're proficient with it when that time comes (hopefully never).
      Peace.

    I've owned my Kimber Ultra Carry II since 2011 firing 1000+ rounds. Never a failure and accurate.
    I carried a 1911A-1 in Indochina for ten months in combat. Every time, fully operational and accurate. The following two years I carried a 1911A-1 on the Berlin Wall.
    I own a 99 year old World War I Army issue 1911 (pre A-1). I take it to the range often. Everytime, fully operational, Gold Cup accurate and all original parts.

    I have a Colt Lightweight Officer's Model which I have had for close to 30 years. I have had a little gunsmithing done to it, and I use Tripp Research Cobra Mags. It is reliable. No jams. However, the one thing is, the bullets it shoots come out slow. If I shoot some hot +P stuff then muzzle blast and recoil become an issue, and even then the bullets are still not that fast. A Commander is not that much bigger nor harder to conceal, yet it yields much better ballistics.

    Hello, I noticed that “stopping power” was mentioned in a couple of your videos. Stopping power/knock down power in regards to hand guns is an invalid term (FBI, various agencies and ballistics research has concluded). When it comes to putting down a subject it is about shot placement and penetration. Recently a neighboring agency put 6 rounds of .40 S&W (hollow point +P) and .45 ACP (non hollows) into a subject before the individual went down. The individual not only survived but was walking around 4 days later. Two of the rounds are still in the subject at the time I posted this. I enjoy watching your videos keep it up guys.

    I carry a Kimber Ultra TLE also. I'm 52 and grew up with 1911's and that's what I'm comfortable with. Yeah, other guns may need less upkeep. But in my opinion, taking care of your gun is part of owning it no matter how reliable you think it is. That's like buying a a new car and not maintaining it. I had three jams in my first 100 rounds. None since. I'm about 500 rounds into it. Also switched to Wilson mags. The single action trigger, the safety and reliability are top notch. I carry mine every day. I never leave home without it. I'm not sure why some of you guys complain about the weight of the gun. If 25 ounces is too much of a load for you, step down to something smaller and more manageable for you. Not that I'm calling you a wuss or anything. But it's a 45, not a 380. The bottom line is carry what works for you. Even all the UA-cam "experts" are going to have prejudices either for or against just about any gun. But if it's reliable and you train with it like you should, then whatever gun feels right to you is what you should carry. I'm not going to talk trash about Glock or XDs. They're just not right for me personally.

  • @sixroldan6742
    @sixroldan6742 8 років тому

    This shooter's humble opinion: The fact that it's so high maintenance in comparison to a Glock which will fire every time regardless of upkeep, knocks it of the top list off the bat. At the $1,300 price range that thing better be full of mud and still fire. When you carry concealed (for the most part) it's because you need that reliability to get you out of a sticky situation and if you lack that reliability due to maintenance then it seems like that wouldn't be my top choice. Also I'm not crazy about it having a hammer and the lip under it. For concealed they shoulda gotten rid of it. The less you have to snag on the better. Still, thank you so much for the video. You guys are awesome, keep up the good work and God bless!

    I'd say LCR 357 revolver. Slim, 5 shots, an insane amount of stopping power, and it's a revolver, so you're never going to get jammed. You don't even have to take it out of your pocket to shoot it -- like in a hostage situation.

    As I read many of the comments below I came away with following impressions: 1: Many comments were made with no supporting information so I disregarded them immediately. 2: If you need, or feel compelled to use four letter words to emphasize your point, or feel compelled to call someone who disagrees with you names, it is a weak point at best, again disregarded. 3: The best concealed carry gun is one that is accurate, comfortable to shoot so you will practice a lot with it, one you can trust in an emergency, and one which will handle ammunition with adequate stopping power.
    I spent a career in the Military - MSG US Army (retired). I have chosen a Commander size (4.25" barrel) 1911 as my carry gun. It is heavy, but for 45ACP that is a good thing in my opinion. Why the 1911 over the Glock or any other striker fired gun? The first and foremost reason is that I personally can not get comfortable with a gun that only has only a trigger safety. In a high stress situation, or even in practice drawing and firing, it is too easy for the trigger finger to slip inside the guard and arm the pistol as it is coming out of the holster. I know it should not happen, and I am sure the with adequate practice it probably would not, but there is a reason the NYPD has the NY Trigger installed in their Glock sidearms. To me the grip safety (1911, Springfield XD series, etc.) is critical for overall safety with a gun I carry loaded and cocked. I can do anything I want with either of my 1911's loaded and cocked and if the pistol is not firmly seated in my hand it will not go off because of the grip safety - it does make checking the weight of the trigger pull a real pain but it can be done. In addition, when I practice drawing my gun the very last thing that happens as the gun comes level to shoot is that my right thumb comes down on top of the slide safety so I have not had a problem trying to fire the gun with the slide safety on. In fact even when shooting from the bench my trigger hand thumb uses the slide safety as thumb rest.
    I have read the comments below with respect to reliability.My response is: first and foremost every gun every made needs to have proper maintenance (yes, including the Glock). They should be periodically cleaned, lubed and inspected, at least every thousand rounds or so. My experience is that with reasonable (not high) maintenance I have found both of my 1911's to be completely reliable, fun and comfortable to shoot accurately, easy to take down and clean, easy to reassemble and use with any 45ACP ammo I have chosen to use. That is true as well for my Beretta 92FS Brigadier and any 9mm Ammo I choose. Both the 1911 and the 92FS (M9) platforms are outstanding designs with proven records over decades of time. I would trust my life to either in a heart beat.
    NOTE: I know people who swear by Glocks and have told me they have never had to clean them or inspect them - so be it. As far as I am concerned they are simply looking for a failure at the very worst time - when you really need the gun. There is no question that the Glock reliable and accurate gun. Keep in mind, though, that they are machines with moving parts that undergo a lot force with discharge, recoil, and the bolt/slide slamming back into battery. As that happens over and over, parts wear, springs weaken and parts become dirty potentially fouling the operation. So, If you bought a Glock so that you could fire thousands of rounds without having to clean, lube or maintain it - in my opinion you have no business owning a gun, and as a Senior NCO I would not have tolerated such behavior on the part of the personnel I led. I cared to much for them to risk their lives by having their side arm fail in combat due to poor or lack of maintenance.

    I know this can be debated forever, but much of it is personal preference or splitting hairs. I learned to shoot with a 1911, I know them inside and out, i clean ANY gun after shooting, I WANT to carry a .45, therefore I love carrying my Kimber Ultra Carry II. I've never had a reliability problem of any kind and it hides better than any other .45 that i'm aware of. Its much less expensive without the crimson trace grips. As long as you have a reliable gun of an appropriate caliber that you are thoroughly comfortable shooting WITHOUT HESITATION (or having to think about what switch or button needs to be clicked,) you have the right gun. The closest thing i have to a complaint about the short barreled .45....its LOUD! Do not forget Ear Protection.

  • @m.k.7199
    @m.k.7199 2 роки тому

    His arguments are transparent, meaning they are the same you hear from all M1911 advocates. I have and carry a Colt New Agent with Novak Tritium Night sights (exactly the same as the Colt Defender). I love this firearm. Before you go out and buy a 3" 1911 pistol, you have to consider the ballistics of the round. The 45ACP drops almost 200 fps from the 5" barrel on a Government model to the 3" barrel size. Meaning, you are losing power and effective distance. On the positive side, there is now 45 ACP ammunition that hits harder (ft. lbs.) travels faster (fps), and, more importantly does more damage. I use Underwood .45 ACP +P 120 gr. Xtreme Defender ammo (537 Ft. Lbs., and 1,420 fps). Now on reliability: I have literally fired over 3000 rounds through my New Agent with no malfunctions. However, the range master at Gunsite Academy said that they have never had a 3" 1911 make it through the training program without having a malfunction. I'm just lucky I guess, but it's out there. Glock is a great design with thousands of pistols in operation. They have issues just like everyone else. They require maintenance and repairs. If you don't maintain them, they wear out faster just like the 1911. I clean my weapons after every range day, and run a patch through it when in dusty conditions, it has never failed me. And it's not a maintenance queen. I paid $750 for my pistol 8 years ago, and Colt lists the MSRP at $999. Kimber's Ultra Carry II (3" barrel) is the same price. Having said that, Kimber has a bunch of 3" barrel 1911 models that go as high as $1500, but are you looking for a pretty firearm or a functional man stopper? I own a Govt Model M1911A1, Colt Commander, and the Colt New Agent, all in 45 ACP. Great Guns! But I also have Glocks, Berreta's, Walthers, Siggs, and other firearms. You pick the tool for the job. For CCW and self defense, I chose the Colt New Agent. When I'm in the back country horse back hunting for deer and Elk, I carry a Ruger Redhawk in .44 Rem Mag. The tool for the job!

    So it is a $1200 maintenance queen that may just fail you "IF" you don't give it the extra attention it demands.Then in the very next breath you say that a much less expensive polymer gun like a Glock may be stone reliable with less maintenance but the $1200 maintenance queen is still the greatest ccw of all time. Priceless. I think you pretty much POOPED on your own position sir.

    Look, I just shot a shot a 1911 for the first time about a week ago and I honestly fell in love with the platform and what I can do with it. I'm honestly interested in carrying one when it comes time for me to actually be able to carry. Not because it's the most reliable gun on the planet, but it's a gun that suits me so damn well and I love the feel of a .45 or probably even a 10mm, I haven't gotten my hands on a 10mm yet, but I assume I'd be quite fond of it as well. When I shot the 1911, it reminded me of when I shot an AK for the first time after my only rifle experiences being with an AR-15 and a Mosin Nagant. The recoil was so distinct to me, it was more than the AR for sure, but it was more wholesome, it was responsive, and I felt confident each time I pulled that trigger. I feel confident when I handled that 1911, it felt like that gun belonged to me. I think that's the most important thing about any duty gun or carry gun, you gotta feel like you own that handgun, that you can shoot that thing instinctively without a second thought. You don't need it to survive being dragged through hell and back, if so, all the better, but as long as that gun is able to perform reliably within the vast majority of reasonable scenarios, you're good! Sometimes, the shooter doesn't choose the gun, the gun chooses him. And I guess the 1911 chose me. Haha

I was going to get a 3" for carry, and I still thought that way after the first jam. After the second jam though, I am now looking at the Glocks that I used to say I would never own.

    I love the 1911. It is a classic and is a blast to shoot. But for a carry weapon I love my m&p 9c, easy to conceal very manageable recoil and with the extended mag I can have 15 rounds to play with. But that's just my preference.

    I used to have a Kimber 3" 1911. Never carried it. Mine was not reliable at all. I even sent it back to Kimber and when it came back it was still unreliable. You can see the issues I was having on my youtube page. From what I've heard some 3"ers work great while others simply do not. Maybe it's a roll of the dice. I hear the Colts Defenders are ultra reliable.

    I understand the love for the 1911. I share it and love them too. However not for concealed carry. Not to mention the obvious issues that you mention about keeping it clean and wet and also they are picky in order to avoid jamming issues, they just can't hang with today's polymer striker fired choices. In a larger caliber give me a G27 or an XDS in 45 ACP. I recently bought my first Springfields. An XDS in 45 and a Mod 2 also in 45. I must say WOW. Pull point and pull the trigger on a Glock or Springfield. No need to remember to flip off a safety. In 45 the Mod 2 is amazing, Wonderful trigger ( no not 1911 good but very nice) however a little bulky but not too bad. In 45 ACP the XDS is hands down the nicest package out there. Only draw back is 5 plus one and the trigger is not as sweet as the Mod 2. I just carry a 7 round spare magazine in my pocket. I appreciate the love of the 1911 but don't let that cloud reality. You said it a Glock will go bang. A Springfield will also. If I should ever need it I don't want to worry about it going bang or me forgetting to flip a thumb safety in the heat of the moment. Other than that, love the Ultra carry Kimbers, They are beautiful and a part of my collection but not in my IWB holster. I don't blame you for your love for it or that it is your choice. There are many that share it. However for the person searching UA-cam for advise that may not know any better I don't thing you have given good advise.

    If recoil and noise is not a problem, it is almost impossible to beat a .45 expanding round for killing someone. I have seen many shot people as a felony assault detective in a big city. A smaller round with high velocity, and an expanding round will also work. But the .45 with an expanding round, center mass, always killed the people I saw shot with them.

    A third downside is the weight. One of my questions is how difficult is it to manipulate the slide like if there was a malfunction? That is something a lot of people forget to look at especially when buying a firearm for their GF or Wife. I got a Walther PPS M2 for my gf because is was the most comfortable and easy to manipulate, not to mention quality. People need to put more money into training than expensive guns. In which case they should always favor shot placement over caliber size. When ever I help someone choose a firearm for EDC, first I go with reliable guns and caliber size based off what they want/need. After those two are settled I always recommend to go with what is most comfortable to handle, manipulate, and shoot.

You could get it in a Dak trigger too. I believe it was 1996 when it came out. The S and W. 40 cal came out and the .357 was Sig's answer to it. The ammo is costly. But what a round. Shawn

    I always thought that the one place that does not matter on a concealed handgun would be barrel length as its hidden in your pants. If the grip is the same why not go with the longer slide to increase velocity as well as sight radius. Some have even said that the longer slide is more reliable than the shorter slide as that is the design that has been around for 100 plus years and is proven. This debate will go on forever. And so long as you are proficient with a reliable firearm all is well.

    I don't care for a thumb safety or an external hammer on a carry piece. You can train to mitigate those things, but I like to keep it simple especially under stress. I had a compact 1911 carry piece for a while and another issue I found is that they are fussy with non-FMJ ammo (ballistic tip/critical defense etc.). For me, I want something that I can easily draw and all I have to do is pull the trigger and it will go "bang."

  • @gcdiver

    So if a GLOCK goes bang every time you pull the trigger (your words), and your Kimber (or any brand 1911) needs so much maintenance to be reliable (i.e. "clean & wet" - again your words), then how do you espouse that it (1911) is the best? To me, your "down side" comments just defeated your initial argument.
    The "best" carry gun is unique to each person related to how they carry (IWB, OWB, ankle, etc.), the caliber that they can control (defensive 9MM has great stopping power), and how often they train with it. If the 1911 is the best for you and you're willing to put out $1200-$1300 for it, and spend the additional $$ on 45ACP ammo to train with, that's great, but to say it's hands down the best, is really not the case for everyone.

There are some really nice 1911s out there but if you are trying to make the argument for best concealed carry gun I think the one that needs less maintenance yet is still highly reliable beats the really expensive gun that needs more maintenance to be as reliable but that's just my $.02.

    Just a couple of thoughts; Glocks also need to be lubricated if they haven't been fired in awhile (check the manual). They also jam and can be ammo sensitive. They also aren't the safest guns in the world (more accidental discharges). So, bottom line, if you take care of your gun and practice; the 1911 is best (though I like 9mm)

    To me the biggest drawback when carrying all day is the heavy weight. I think ALL guns used for personal protection should always be cleaned and maintained, so I don't see that aspect of it as a drawback. Kimber 1911 is definitely my favorite! Kimber recommends that you change the rcoil springs/rod assembly every 1500 rounds. I bought a spare one to have just in case, but after 5000 rounds my Kimber with all its original parts still functions flawlessly like a new gun!

  • @GargantuanGanja
    @GargantuanGanja 8 років тому +1

    Your first sentence got a downvote. Did you seriously just tell everyone that the 1911 is THE most reliable handgun ever made? Please tell me you're joking... Especially since major manufacturers like Wilson Combat and Nighthawk will no longer make pistols under 3.5" for reliability reasons (I think 3.6 is the lowest Wilson goes and Nighthawk is 3.8). The 1911 was designed to function as a 5" barrel.
    That being said, the 1911 is my favorite handgun of all time and a 4" would be one of my top choice concealed carry options, but you are flat-out wrong about the reliability. You said yourself, if it isn't clean and wet, it isn't as reliable as polymer guns and reliability is quite possible the most important factor when selecting a CCW. I can tell you from experience, my father purchased several 3" 1911s from STI which were easily over $1500 each. Not one of them performs reliably out of the box. After 1000rds of break-in, there's still a malfunction every 50th round or so and they are very prone to limp-wristing.
    Kimber is notorious for poor quality control and reliability. Please don't make bold claims when lives may depend on it. If you want reliability, go with something proven. You arguably picked the LEAST reliable handgun to ever be produced.
    Shame on you.

  • @rockyparkerton1372
    @rockyparkerton1372 7 років тому

    You had me except for a couple points. 8 round is enough? Who goes into a gun fight wishing they had half the capacity of the other guy? Second, "if it's not clean and wet..." I assume you mean lubricated. I've shot 1911s for over 20 years. They stand the test of time better than any polymer gun, and in fact, if you keep them "wet" they are more likely to have issues in the field or as a nightstand gun due to the gathering of lint/debris on over-lubricated surfaces. Third, I love 45 ACP. My EDC is 45 ACP, 80% of the time. But let's not fool ourselves into thinking "stopping power" is a thing. Energy on target, cavitation and permanent wound channel areas thing. But, how permanent does a wound channel have to be to need someone out in 30 seconds? Energy on target does not stop bad guys. Shutting down the nervous system or taking away the hydraulic pressure of the human body is what stops bad guys. Telling people that they need a bigger round is the same mistake the Feds made when going to the 40 caliber. Rounds on target, either exsanguinating the target or shutting down their brain is what stops them cold.

    Fair points. I might argue about the reliability factor, especially of a Kimber, as their QC went out the window years ago. But one of the things you list as a positive I list as a negative. I don't want a 2 1/2 - 3lb trigger pull on a carry gun. Those are competition numbers. Give me a 4-6lb pull for a true every day defensive carry gun.

  • @tonycurtis4282

    I enjoyed the video. My normal carry is also a 1911. However, I prefer the commander size, though I loved my Colt Defender (9mm) before I traded up. I have a Wilson Combat professional in 45. Never once has it failed. I keep a log on all my pistols and track any issues. It's the only handgun that I own that hasn't had even one FTF or FTE other than a custom G23 that had specially built.
    You touched on it, but with the multiple built in safety measures, I feel the most comfortable carrying a 1911. It's in the cocked and locked position with one in the chamber. You simply aren't going to have an accidental discharge.

I am checking out guns and I would like to know what would be the best concealed carry hand gun for someone with Zero hand gun experience. Obviously I want to practice at the range when I get down there. I really like the idea of the thumb safety on the 1911's. So I was thinking the Colt Defender in .45 or the EMP IN .40. Maybe I should start with a 9mm. People say the 9mm doesn't have stopping power???? I like the look of the 1911's. But I am NOT mechanically inclined and worry about being able to clean the thing properly and put it back together. Any ideas?

    Of course it depends... For my small'ish wife who likes to appendix carry, a 1911 is too big and too heavy. Also the reliability of a 1911 depends on the model; not all are dependable. My wife carries a Sig P238 which has proven to be extremely reliable, and we go to the range two or three times each month. Every range visit we'll shoot 100-200 rounds. In two years I believe we've only had one or two fail to fire.

    I carry a 1911 and all I got out of him was “MUH stopping power 😤” if you just carry a gun cause you like it just say it. I know there’s way better options than 1911s out there but I just like to carry a 1911

    If Brian is comfortable carrying his Kimber, then more power to him. No question it is a really sharp looking firearm, just not something I would carry considering the other options I have.

    Recoil on the 3" 1911 Officer model in 45 ACP is substantial especially in a stressful situation... The same high quality 1911 Officer Model carry gun in 9mm has proven to be in the opinions of many old timers in the shooting arena like me the way to proceed into everyday concealed carry... 9mm equals More rounds in the magazine and much more female friendly due to less recoil and quicker return to target between shots which might save one's life on both accounts...

    I carry the same gun for the same reasons. But, I don't need the laser, had one took it off. And since I did that I was able to put on the ultra thin Wilson Combat grip panels. Also use the Wilson Combat mags.
    Had Kimber hone down the safety lever and slide stop lever, also had them install the smaller grip safety.
    And TRAIN often.....................................
    Bottom line - Best Carry gun, hands down.........................
    ( disagree about reliability, goes bang under conditions most handguns fail, trust me, been there, done that, real world combat)

    I love 3" 1911; but they are not reliable in the least! Most custom builders don't make 3" for that reason.i have a commander lightweight that is very reliable, but Wilson Combat only will go a bit smaller?

    I see some comments say compact 1911's are not reliable.
    Why should barrel length, or compactness affect reliability??
