I’ll be getting this new Mac Pro, I still have my 2008’ Mac Pro (I paid $5,000.00 for the computer and $999.00 per Screen of which I have two) with 16GB RAM running OS X Sierra, this will be a great upgrade for me with the new Mac Pro.
      Programs I currently use :
      Pro Audio :
      LOGIC PRO X 10.3.4
      Reason 10
      Komplete 10
      UAD Plugins (All)
      SoundToys Plugins (All)
      WaveArts Plugins (All)
Audio Interfaces : Apogee Symphony IO, Element 24 & Duet 2.
      Pro Digital Art :
      Final Cut Pro X 10.3.4
      Blackmagic Design Resolve 15
      Pixologic ZBRUSH 2020’
      Cinema 4D
      Autodesk Suite Entertainment Creation 2011 {Maya, Mudbox & Sketchbook Pro}
      Adobe® Creative Suite® 5 Master Collection
      Corel Painter 12
      Harmony/Toon Boom
Digital Drawing Tablets : Wacom Cintiq & Intous
*All the same software installed on my mid-2010’ MacBook Pro 💻 running High Sierra 10.13 & a 2015’ 5K iMac 🖥 running Mojave.
**Never had to purchase any anti-virus software for any of my Macs.
***Upgraded from ZBrush 2019’ to 2020
I’m glad that this new Mac Pro will actually be modular and have PCIe slots like my 2008’. Gonna Max it out and be done with it, hopefully it’ll last me 10/11 years like my original did.
      Good job apple.

He shows his use cases, his workflows. he also shows how much of his physical hardware was all replaced with just one Mac pro. He also showed how that insane CPU/RAM combo is utilized by his softwares. Nice videos to watch. Average photoediting or video editing does not require a hardware costing this much.

I've been working in the media industry for 15+ years now. Was Mac all the way till 2017. Switched to a PC and well, never looked back. I still use a Mac though. It's mostly for FCP. Like editing interviews and such. Everything else, C4D, AE, PS, Illustrator, Premier and everything resource intensive, I do on my PC. I have a Ryzen 9 3950x PC with a 2080Ti card and nvme in raid and a 5TB SSD & 20TB HDD. The price for the entire rig is dirt cheap compared to a Mac Pro. I guess what I must consider is that it doesn't seem viable in terms of price to performance ratio. But, for pure bragging rights about how much money you make, well, I guess this is the way to go if you have $50k just littered around the house or somethin like pocket change.

8000$ for the photography setup? You can get that even cheaper in the apple world. Low end specs make 0 sense on the iMac pro. Not even to speak of a similar spec windows system. You are paying a huge premium for the ability to spec it out.
At min 6:10 you also test video by testing prores 4:4:4? That is the easiest codec for the system, because it has the least compression. Something like H.265 is where you need processing power. (Especially if you go for a variant that doesn't have hardware decoding support)

Quick FPGA explainer: Think of it as another programmable processor in addition to the CPU. Whereas a computer’s CPU is designed to work for a huge variety of tasks and the internal logic is essentially hardwired, an FPGA can be programmed to do a specific task much more efficiently, because it doesn’t need to waste hardware on anything extraneous to that task. It can also be programmed to do a crapload or parallel tasks (which makes coding for it a bit of a mind fuck). There’s no reason the Afterburner can’t be programmed to handle other specific use-cases down the road. I could see them being used more in the future, because they’re great for churning through lots of data quite quickly, as long as you’re just doing the same things to it over and over again.

Thanks Tyler, like you I can admire from afar but can't afford one. I am also a freak about fan noise but found that most workstation class computers such as the HP Z series have this tamed. My one complaint about the Mac Pro, well besides the price, is the strange fixation Apple has with AMD Radeon graphic cards or should I say hatred of Nvidia. Frankly, if you do a lot of rendering Nvidia is often the go to card but the bad blood between the two companies means no support in the Mac Pro for Nvidia. That's a deal breaker for me.

Hey! Thanks for the video. I'm editing a ton of 4.5k red raw files on FCPX with my base iMacPro... Im running an external screen as well. My 2 questions for the Mac Pro:
    1) Can you run 2x XDR displays + 1x 4k display with the Vega pro ll 32gb? Or is the Duo the only option?
    2) Would you go higher on the CPU cores or bump up to the GPU from Vega pro ll 32gb to the due? If price vs performance was the only option?

Actually the more things you have open, the more ram you are using. Lightroom not responding is because there arent cores for that program cause premiere is running a video, ps opens photos etc. If you open 100 photos in photoshop it will use less ram than 1000. There is no need to compare it while it opens them, since they are not still in cache memory to even count them in the usage.

Great video. My only real problem with this machine is the cost of entry. In Australia the absolute base model starts at $AU10,000 and it's a really crappy spec for the price. As a software dev, this just isn't the machine for me anyway but that's my main objection. A top end iMac is ~50% cheaper with a spec that SMOKES the base Mac Pro.

  • @bikesandbeats4693

The 7,1 is so expensive because it is manufactured in America. That added about 2.3x the price to the base model from the previous Mac Pro.

1.5tb of ram? supermicro do up to 3tb on a few of their single cpu workstations (more on multi-cpu), not that new either. Much better, particularly when you take the after-sales support into account.
Internal usb ports have been around in PCs for many years.
The limitation of the gen 3 pci-e means you won't get above around 2500MB/s on nvme m.2 drives, let alone if you use more than 1 pci card and it covers everything up. Also what's with the lack of pci slots? I can run a 15000MB/s pci-e card as a hard drive if I have enough space.
Still have the 8bit+FRC issue of MacOS when it sends signals to monitors.
You still have the update issue with MacOS (once it installs an update for software, you can never get rid of it), this caused a few studios to ditch FCP and Apple all together as there was a 6 month wait for Apple to fix the quicktime audio switching issue that corrupted FCP projects.

I have an 8gb RX 580 card in a 2010 12core MacPro (plus a bunch of solid state storage) and it flies through 4K and 6k raw footage when editing - it’s a little slower than I’d like to render out but seeing as 75% of my work is still HD I think my system will still last me a while. I may look at a this new MacPro in a couple of years time and I’m really glad Apple has made a new tower based professional Mac - I’d much rather stick with a nice quiet Mac than build a cheaper PC and would view a £10k+ system as a long term purchase so guess I’d better start saving now for a 16core model now.

HP Z8 G4: 2x 28cores and 3TB of ram. Even the old z840, that you can't even buy anymore takes 2tb of ram and maxes out at 2x 18 cores. My 8! year-old z620 has 192gb of ram, just like your r2d2. Yet the main point is: None of that even matters anymore in 2020. If you have serious workloads, you have a small render farm. If you don't have serious workloads, you can wait 5 minutes longer. In case you haven't already transitioned to GPU render. And for that, you should actually have a few Nvidia drivers going... which the mac doesn't.

I found this rather interesting as a freelance designer who has used Macs since the Performa days. Do I want one of these Mac Pro's ??? I would love one, do I need one ??? the answer is no. My current machine runs all the software I use with dual 27" screens. InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Capture One, Barcode Pro and Fontexplorer Pro. Those are the main apps and the Mac Pro would be way overkill for anything that I use. But you have to admit, it is one beautiful piece of kit and you will not get a Windows box anywhere near as good.

And it is so funny that people say it has more power than they need when the base 8 core processor is about the speed of an AMD 3600X and the 16 core about a 3950X. These are extremely well selling CPUs in the non Mac world.

Honest question: why do you get to evaluate this computer, if you don't know what taxes what, or what the various components are for? What's the point of randomly launching stuff with no real plan or goal?
Want to use RAM? One image in Photoshop is enough. Just make a large image and add layers, and your Mac will need to read data into memory. Got 1.5TB of RAM? Or even "just" 192GB? Yes, you will need a large image, but that's not a problem using some high res stills and making a panorama or whatever.
But more importantly: what the hell is the point of maxing out the RAM? Just goes on to show how misunderstood this non performance increasing component is.

The FPGA can only be reprogrammed a relatively small number of times, so it's unlikely that Apple would let any 3rd party reprogram it in the field. The whole architecture of such an FPGA is devoted to a very specific series of tasks and such tasks are quite different between, say, a ProRes workflow, and a Red workflow, which involves decompressing JPEG2000 (wavelet compression). What's more likely is that specialized formats will have their own accelerator cards.

  • @elenchus

the fundamental problem is, and I'm not being facetious, is that pretty much all MacOS users need a Mac Pro, and not because of its performance. We need the reliability, ability to upgrade, quiet, and low temperatures of a good tower in general. That ought to result in a more mainstream Mac tower that serves the ordinary consumer, but it's been 7 years since we had something akin to the original Power Mac or first generation of Mac Pro, a premium, upscale, midtower that was good for everyone but could be specced quite high for certain demands.
That's why we all had to rely on Power Macs and Mac Pros instead of iMacs. It wasn't to have something high-end. It was to get those "soft" factors. The iMac was for the casual user, and the Mac Pro and Power Mac were for people who depended on their computer, whether they were just doing office work or they were working in Hollywood.
Basically, we need a new Macintosh II.

    • @elenchus
      @elenchus 4 роки тому

@@Janken_Pro Well, all of the reasons I described in my initial comment. A lot of people don't need the speed of a Mac Pro, but they do need the reliability, repairability, upgradeability, and quiet of the Mac Pro. That's why so many people had Power Macs and Mac Pro (pre-2013s) in their office even if they weren't high-performance users.
This is also the reason why the desktop form factor is still extremely common in offices across the world.
In essence, if you just dropped the iMac hardware into a good midtower, you'd meet the needs of the average Mac-using professional quite well.

You mention that XDR display might be even more out of your range but that really doesn’t make sense. Here is why:
The XDR Display at 5k$ offers something nothing else can offer at that price. Mac Pro on the other hand isn’t anything special unless you spend over 15k$ on it which would make it more “out of your range”.
A sub 10k$ mac pro is not really a powerful computer. I can’t imagine a youtube channel justifying the cost unless you are producing 8K videos daily.

Great computer. For high-end art, graphic design, video, music production, and some other fields (2D and 3D work in other areas) this machine is a dream. If the software is optimized for this particular Mac Pro then even better. But the price is steep. You can build a custom PC or use a Macbook Pro, iMac Pro, or older Mac Pro and likely still do well. BUT...I will admit that I honestly think this Mac Pro, while not the best buy at the moment, is going to do well down the road as more software takes advantage of the ram and multi-core design. I know a lot of music composers may be able to run all their plugin VST libraries within their DAW without the need to use 2, 3, 4, or more additional CPUs all networked. But for now I would not recommend this unless you are running a very profitable business and need to upgrade. If so, then the cost is worth it. For video their new monitor is amazing. While $5,000 is expensive for a monitor, that is actually a steal considering some top-end graphics folks are using Sony and other high-end monitors that cost $30,000 and up. Also, kudos to Apple on the design and expand-ability of this machine.
