Both (!) fighters had a speed and power up to the last round, just incredible, an inspiration for any young boxer all over the world. What a great performance!
Leonard had 2 things really working for him in the rematch. 1) The ring was HUGE--21 X 21--(that's a VERY large ring--perfect for Sugar Ray to utilize his speed and movement.) 2) Duran blew up to almost 200 lbs. after the first fight and had about 2 and 1/2 months to get down to 147, which HAD to have sapped a lot of his energy. No excuses though--Leonard stayed in top shape--Duran let himself go--that's entirely on him and his management (or lack thereof.)
That's the major point that I'd make, was it Leonard's fault? Of course not. It was still a brilliant performance and he should be given credit for that
He broke Duran DOWN..mentally as well as physically! Duran had gone EIGHT YEARS without a loss and had won over FIFTY FIGHTS IN A ROW until Ray beat him, so this was a historic accomplishment. I saw the fight live (on pay per view) back in 1980 and when Duran said those famous words “no mas” and quit, the crowd was in total disbelief. That (along with his first fight with Thomas Hearns) was Sugar Ray’s greatest fight. I believe that he was the greatest welterweight of all time!
@@jalenikezeue4114 Duran freaked out! Going into this fight, he had won over FIFTY FIGHTS IN A ROW.. his last loss was a close decision back in ‘72 against Estaban Dejesus (who would go on to win the WBC lightweight title). Duran knocked Dejesus out twice in rematches and moved up to the welterweight division and defeated Leanord to become champion. BUT in that REMATCH, Sugar Ray took command of the fight from the beginning and Duran, in my opinion, got scared and quit..it’s just that simple. A lot of people have tried to analyze why Duran quit for the last 40 years, but the answer is obvious. Why do most fighters quit a battle? Fear! He was getting beat and he knew (from their first contest) that Leanord was going to be even stronger in the later rounds. He wasn’t going to get tired. Wow! I just watched this exact match only 9+ hours ago. I got lucky and found a bunch of my old boxing tapes and this was ONE of the fights. Sugar Ray Leonard definitely put on a masterclass to such a high degree, of The Sweet Science, that he made The Boxing Legend known as Roberto Duran aka "Hands of Stone" quit. Quite literally not only on the ring, but for good. This was right before he announced his retirement. But let us not forget that the legend "Manos de Piedra" stated, "he (*as in Sugar Ray Leonard) needs to move from this weight. although my body did not want to move the way I want it to move, I did not feel Sugar Ray Leonard as strong. He didnt feel like much of a threat at this weight class. He needs to move up." (*paraphrasing, but this is the just of what he said in the locker room in an interview, following this fight. To be able to make Duran look second rate just shows how extraordinary Leonard was. Both great fighters and both fought in the best times ever with top rank opponents.
Aggressive defense, crackerjack timing, all-seeing eyes, and the speed of a devil. Intelligent use of gamesmanship to frustrate, and goad Duran. What is further, SRL outworked one of the best in-fighters of all time while on the inside. Legend of the Ring. A fighter born.
Leonard has a lot of movement or what plebs call "running" and I still don't understand why people call Floyd a runner or a chicken when Leonard does it more. I love both boxers but the delusions gotta stop.
It’s just not the same man. Floyd moving and Sugar Ray moving are not the same. Plus, Floyd was quick but Sugar Ray had blinding speed with crazy combinations that landed with authority. Just different. Roy Jones is the only one that I can think of who compares to Ray’s speed and accuracy.
@@c4cubey931 But Floyd’s defense was amazing to watch bro. I guess maybe if he stood in front of his opponents and made them miss like Pernell Whitaker did. Instead of using his legs + shoulder roll to be elusive most of the times then fans wouldn’t be saying he’s “running” or “boring”.
@@myfriend280 Garry Russel Jr. and don’t forget a prime welterweight Sugar Ray Robinson who I’m 100% sure had Unbelievable speed. At one point I think he had the fastest hands ever before Roy and Leonard came along. Robinson’s combinations were amazing!
Masterclass is the wrong title for the first fight. It was a brilliant and close fight between 2 all time greats. This here was total domination by Leonard thus being a masterclass.
I think that's a bit of a myth to be honest. Duran was the rightful winner of the first fight but it wasn't a dominant performance or an easy victory for him, Leonard absolutely pushed him to the limit and it was a close one.
I love it when SRL gives him that “look”, like he’s saying “That all you got, sucka?” And then spins his right arm around while his left goes BAM! I always hated Duran so to see him get demolished like this was great
I think it’s important note that while this is a masterclass, Duran’s manager screwed Duran by having him sign a fight for next month, him not knowing how immediate the rematch was. Duran was 190lbs. This caused him to focus more on losing the weight than actually training.
@@j.l.1981 my thought also.. duran quit not of being hurt, but duran liked going toetotoe or Box but sugarray goofed like it Was an exibition alla pastprime mayweather. The only guy who was a real bad matchup for Duran was the Hitman Thomas Hearns
Grande grande grande, esta en mi top trhee all on time: Cassius Clay, Sugar Ray Robinson y Ray Sugar Leonard
I saw him fight Javier Muniz in New Haven in 1978. Sat through 3 hours of boring preliminary fights then Ray knocked him out in 2:45 of 1st round. The sound of his gloves hitting Muniz sounded like a drum roll.
I love Duran he's one of my all time favorites! The first fight contrary to how you saw it was a close competitive fight that Duran won. This on the other hand was a dominant performance by Leonard. Both great fighters, no bias here unlike you.
Tbf Durán wasnt dedicated going into the second fight and had been partying a lot. I feel like if both were at their best fighting the best they could, I think it’d always be a 50/50 fight, both guys would win 500 fights out of 1000 with each other, both were that good
If I was Duran I wouldn't have fought this guy I would have said he is gonna win if I fight him. He ain't gonna hurt me but he will win because his fast movements. But I won't fight him because the kind of boxing I want in my carreer is toe to toe. Someone who I can exchange with and see who is tougher Not someone Im gonna have to chase the 12 rounds and who is gonna win by points. That would have been more honest and real. And actually Duran didn't need leonard. Leonard needed Duran
I understand. It's just that that seems to be the natural trajectory of sport. At the start, it's an expensive labor of love, once it becomes popular, it becomes lucrative primary income and grows apecialty organizations around it to support specialization. Few of today's hockey players would even survive 80's hockey or basketball. 😂 The sport evolved. Once big money happens, it acts to steer things towards bigger money. Flashier, fancier and most of all, market share. Like the old WWF. There's never really been a cult following for Greco-Roman wrestling. Handsome, talented, flashy, charismatic = money. Not to say that he SRL wasn't amazing. He had every reason to win decisions.

Sugar Ray was a Magician in the ring! WOW!
would love to see a boxing masterclass video of James Toney vs Iran Barkley
Aggressive defense, crackerjack timing, all-seeing eyes, and the speed of a devil. Intelligent use of gamesmanship to frustrate, and goad Duran. What is further, SRL outworked one of the best in-fighters of all time while on the inside. Legend of the Ring. A fighter born.
My all time favorite boxer. I use to have my homies pissed in Fight Night on PlayStation with him 😆
Legend
Слава Богу! Здравствуйте! Это было исскуство! Такой умной головы, и лëгких ног, как к второго Сахарного, я не видел! Спасибо!
The greatest of all times Sugar Ray Leonard
Duran had 72 fights one loss and 56 knockouts at that point. Blimey these days 9 fights and a world title fight is right in front of you. Ridiculous.
Leonard has a lot of movement or what plebs call "running" and I still don't understand why people call Floyd a runner or a chicken when Leonard does it more. I love both boxers but the delusions gotta stop.
It's because Floyd is simply boring to watch for the average fan, all respect to Floyd and Ray Leonard
@krugersavage6347 sugar Ray leonard fight when he needs fight...see the fight again Thomas Hearns the 1 fight
The way Leonard's people, especially promotional people, set this up Duran had no chance! Look it up! That's why Duran said "No Mas!"
@@xf7zj What do you mean by set him up? Is it Leonard’s fault that Duran blew up in weight?
sadly for you sugar is better
Reading the comments, it seems as though everyone has forgotten the first Duran vs. Lenard fight. In my opinion, that was the master class.
Masterclass is the wrong title for the first fight. It was a brilliant and close fight between 2 all time greats. This here was total domination by Leonard thus being a masterclass.
This was a rematch fight. The first fight, Roberto won decisively.
I think that's a bit of a myth to be honest. Duran was the rightful winner of the first fight but it wasn't a dominant performance or an easy victory for him, Leonard absolutely pushed him to the limit and it was a close one.
@@hanzagod Close rounds doesn't mean close fight, duran beat him at least 10-5
His outside standing is insane😯😯😯
Haja energia e condicionamento para essa movimentação, muito top
I love it when SRL gives him that “look”, like he’s saying “That all you got, sucka?” And then spins his right arm around while his left goes BAM!
I always hated Duran so to see him get demolished like this was great
I think it’s important note that while this is a masterclass, Duran’s manager screwed Duran by having him sign a fight for next month, him not knowing how immediate the rematch was. Duran was 190lbs. This caused him to focus more on losing the weight than actually training.
Absolut facts!! No mass, he wasnt in any kind of Duran-shape
excuses
Oh man, it was a joke for duran. Running, jumping and making abscure faces. Poor duran, how could anybody take this fight serious 😂
@@j.l.1981 my thought also.. duran quit not of being hurt, but duran liked going toetotoe or Box but sugarray goofed like it Was an exibition alla pastprime mayweather.
The only guy who was a real bad matchup for Duran was the Hitman Thomas Hearns
@@SuperHtownswagnah, its a fact. I like Leonard, but he was cherry picking his opponents all the time...
BEAST!!!! Coming from a man who’s favorite fighter was Marvelous Hagler!
Masterclass
That must have been frustrating beyond belief!
Ray Leonard's effectiveness inside is very underrated, it's how he stayed competitive and beat Duran, Hearns, and truth be told...Hagler.
He didn’t beat hagler stop 💀
@@surveying482 He did and rather easily
No let's not go there , no way he beat Hagler , the judges , referee saw to that
@@acetofresh1 easily because of the judges and Referee , but nope Hagler won
Grande grande grande, esta en mi top trhee all on time: Cassius Clay, Sugar Ray Robinson y Ray Sugar Leonard
Wasn't better than Tommy, lmao
I saw him fight Javier Muniz in New Haven in 1978. Sat through 3 hours of boring preliminary fights then Ray knocked him out in 2:45 of 1st round.
The sound of his gloves hitting Muniz sounded like a drum roll.
It's very important to note that Duran kicked Leonard's ass in the first fight and the second fight was a complete fix!!
Absolute nonsense. Stick to WWE.
@@hanzagod you're just mad because Duran whipped your boy🤣🤣
I love Duran he's one of my all time favorites! The first fight contrary to how you saw it was a close competitive fight that Duran won. This on the other hand was a dominant performance by Leonard. Both great fighters, no bias here unlike you.
Hard to handle hands of stone toe to toe!
@hanzagod, Can you do a boxing masterclass on Ali vs Cleveland Williams, I think that his performance that night was flawless.
Definitely one for the future for sure. I think my next in that series will be Marlon Starling's performance against Lloyd Honeyghan.
Leonard looked like he's on 1.25 speed to Duran's 0.75! Roberto's pride must've hurt after getting tagged so many times by Sugar Ray without reply.
no mas
As great as Duran was, this performance just proved when Ray was on his A game, Duran couldn't hang with him.
Tbf Durán wasnt dedicated going into the second fight and had been partying a lot. I feel like if both were at their best fighting the best they could, I think it’d always be a 50/50 fight, both guys would win 500 fights out of 1000 with each other, both were that good
What did fight 1 prove then? That way. Duran was on his A Game, Sugar Ray couldn’t hand with him
@@hw343434Duran baited Sugar Ray into a brawl… & Sugar Ray fell for it!
Had he boxed as he normally did…THERE WOULD NOT BE A PART 2 or 3
@@Israel85324 lol what a casual take. Bet you never saw SRL other fights lol.
@@Manosdepiedra1979exactly, Roberto always would have won the first fight because he was actually in shape
Ese va hacer mi maestro de boxeo el lunes 😅
If I was Duran I wouldn't have fought this guy
I would have said he is gonna win if I fight him. He ain't gonna hurt me but he will win because his fast movements.
But I won't fight him because the kind of boxing I want in my carreer is toe to toe. Someone who I can exchange with and see who is tougher
Not someone Im gonna have to chase the 12 rounds and who is gonna win by points.
The sport evolved.
@dreianj srl is known basically because of Duran
While Duran is known for being one of the greatest
As I said before Duran didn't need Srl.
Srl needed Duran
@thiagoocean8497 I don't doubt you. What I'm saying is that sports are not organic. Not at that level and dollars make strange bedfellows. Imagine how much you have to make to guarantee the purses they do.
@@dreianj well yeah I think we all miss the good days when sports were more legit
Atra boy sugar,,,
You beat his arse until he quits !!
Run & Hug all night, he couldn't punch to save his life
Para esa pelea Sugar Ray Leonard se entrenó bonito, con sparings mas 🤠 livianos que le exigieron en velocidad, hizo ver como atornillado y torpe a Durán que fue puro fajador
The best ever.the faster ever the smarter ever.the king of the century
Mad because the man didn't want to slug it out but instead use skills..
Exactly! Real men slug it out! Not dance around like nancy boys!
and have brain damage later in life
not many people can have the courtesy to tell someone they taunted Duran to his face and still won the fight after
Sugar Ray Leonard was the greatest in his weight class 👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊 🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊
Sugar Ray : el mejor pugil que vi. Cuando le pegaban me dolía a mi también. Mi Idolo !!!!
The most complete fighter he have all
Agree 100%.
Sugar Ray, my favorite boxer ever.
Buenos boxeadores 🥊🥊
I think Suger Ray should of gotten the victory in the first fight , it was so close
I think Duran did enough to win but I do agree it was a close one.
If he was a painting he'd be a Davinci
i dont care what any one thinks that was the most complete fight plan of all time xxx
I believe speed determined this fight. Duran had none
I was at the brawl in Montreal!
Awesome!
Speed power everything is there
He’s own fault for not taking his job seriously, fall of a legend
