I work with a couple teenagers. One girl plays this album nonstop. She was born when I was about 35. This album was released my sophomore year. Always be proud of this album, Alanis.
Two other albums I've always thought every woman should have copies of are Tidal by Fiona Apple and Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos. Like Jagged Little Pill, they resonate differently as we, as women, age and gather more experiences in life.
"And everytime I scratch my nails down someone else's back I hope you feel it" Oh, how I miss this music... Only someone who has loved hard and been hurt can truly understand the level of hate and rage needed to create such powerful words. Love her

I was in my early 20s when this song was released..yes, that makes me around Alanis' age. This song truly was the first ever "F--- you" song from a female I ever heard. Radio stations were playing it in heavy rotation.
I mean, it wasn't even that popular as a single (at least in the UK.) But it somehow managed to be both in the charts and have all of us who thought we were indie thinking it was cool.

This is my first time hearing about this song thanks to Gabbie lol. I think Gabbie tried too hard with her hurting people just to keep people interested before she release the cover. All of that for a cover, pretty sad to me.

2019 and this is still the very BEST angry breakup song. There is no line that strikes more fear in a spurred lovers heart more than "And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back, I hope you feel it." Utterly killer line, and the best tune of it's kind. I've never not loved this.
Robb Ladd, Matt Laug, and a drum machine programmed by the producer played on this album. Taylor was Alanis’ touring drummer and appeared in the album’s videos.
And now this album is available in literally every thrift shop in Middle America, along with Engelbart Humperdinck LPs, pinewood and plaid fabric gliding rockers from Ames and those little brown stoneware soup bowls.
It's because Alanis is a true frontman that didnt pander to a particular demographic.. she just sang her fuckin ass off.. They are still around today.. just harder to find. Alanis would have became famous no matter what era she released her music in, and she might have gave people heart attacks if it was any era before 1970 lol.
"Does she know how you'd hold me until you died. 'Til you died. But you're still alive." So poetic. And hits home somehow even though I've long been out of the dating scene. Enjoyed it then, appreciating it all over again.

'I want you to know, that I am happy for you I wish nothing but the best for you both' -Aw, thanks Alanis, that's so sweet of you!! *Alanis takes a deep breath* IS SHE PEVERTED LIKE ME.... -Oh shit, here we go...
I was jamming to my Jagged Little Pill cassette in my car, on my way to meet a friend for lunch at 11:00 am. on 9/11/2001. When I got there, I saw what was happening. I'm so glad I was listening to Alanis and didn't hear it on the radio while I was driving. She was a huge part of my young adult life. She got me through a lot of heartache and gave me a lot of fun just dancing and singing at the top of my lungs. ❤
"I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know," is the best line. Such a great understated comment about her rage and how she's going to unleash it all.
THis song was about her as a 15 year old hooking up with the guy from full house show.. she hooked up with a 39 year old at 15 he had her do bj in a theature.. true story.. perverts in holy wood. and of course 90s was perverted with music.
This is the best “fuck you” song I’ve ever heard. I don’t think anyone else can do it justice because she wrote this for an ex. No one will ever match the intensity and rage that she felt while recording this.
YES I agree, sometimes you internalise , but when you need to vent, this is the best song to wail to. I wail - my neighbors are putting up with it ? Don't ask about Chris Cornell....
There is, quite literally, NOTHING wrong with this song. You feel the anger, resentment and anything else you need throughout. She showed everyone how to be pissed off first.
My favorite artist of the 90's. Jagged Little Pill was my #1 album. I have another favorite band, they are called The Warning, and they did a cover of "You Oughta Know" on Sirius. Thanks for sharing your music.
Correction. Cover it in your car or shower but please not by releasing a half ass version on the internet after trolling the piss out of the world for a month.
If you want to see a good cover of the song, I’d suggest watching Lauren Patten performing the version from the musical of Jagged Little Pill! She’s the only one who’s been able to hold a candle to the original.
it's better than poetry. out of metre and makes it's own rules. Funny how it's called you ought to know. Nothing of the sort applies to this piece of genius
Alanis still kicks absolute ass.......This track literally sticks the middle finger up at all of the anger and the sheer frustration that everybody feels whenever they experience a traumatic split up. It's so honest and so raw and everyone can relate to what this track is saying i think. It's just absolutely fucking fantastic!!!

I'm a fan of guns and roses, Rush, Pantera, prince, hall and Oates and this might be my favorite song as a 39 year old man. This is how a song is supposed to be sung. If you can't feel the raw emotion in her voice then the song failed to reach you. And every time you speak her name does she know that you told me you'd hold me until you die, but you're still alive. That line makes me want to cry outta anger. So powerful and she was 21 when she wrote that album
I'm around the same age... Huge Pantera and Slayer fan which have the deepest & darkest lyrics I've ever heard... This woman has the same hate in her voice as the metal bands I love and enjoy. It is very refreshing to hear a female singer have so much energy and force in her lyrics!
Nickacus its Holland Oats... not Hall and Oates... that doesnt even make sense! A hall and oates? And oats is spelled wrong! Everyone knows its Holland Oats (named after the world famous Oats from Holland - best oats you can get I eat it every morning!) and their most well known song "Your Kiss is on My Lips"
her music transcended cultures. my young black teenage self growing up in my super religious house in the midwest just connected to this album. it's still one of my top faves.

I just want everyone to know that this song was a defining moment of my coming of age around 11. I was captivated by the raw authenticity. That phase where you transition from a child into your own identity is so special. I was people were kinder to teenagers.
The wardrobe department for this video absolutely crushed it. Everything she's wearing either never went out of style or has come back around in full swing. The setting; the colour of the film; the direction and movement of the whole thing, it's so perfect for the song. I love it
Thanks to Alanis and this track I get therapy from singing this while thinking of my ex. The Bitch may have to receive a copy of this .. To the point and true :-)
This woman hands down got me through some of my most miserable time's . I'm sure I wasn't the only woman listening back then with a cheating lying husband. She helped with the anger I had and I could just blast this and know this woman is as mad as I am and I didn't feel so alone. When I have difficult times, she is my go to.
@@sidekick6371 Actually no. I met my husband now 23 year's ago, after the first husband. My 2nd husband who is a Schultz is amazing! I couldn't imagine a better man. This song though, got me through some brutal year's.
It is interesting to hear this version after Gabbie's. Admittedly I hadn't heard of the song before. But this version sounds so much less one dimensional. Initially I didn't mind Gabbie's version because I liked her voice in this more rock style lower register (but I'm not gonna support her given how she's acted), but watching this just makes me realise how much Gabbie's version just stays more or less the same throughout while this original has so much more depth and personality to it.
Gabbie could never touch Alanis! I used to be a Gabbie fan but what she is doing is not cool. Especially making a lame version of this classic. I hope Alanis sues her lol
I love that rock seems to be coming back and I'm all for people looking to this kind of music to inspire their own music but rock has a rawness and this super emotional tie to it and for people like GH to see how well it did and then just to cover it for views really showcases her being more one dimensional. A song like this isn't just about sounding edgy and stuff. The emotions have to be there... Otherwise it just looks like a cash grab

Two other albums I've always thought every woman should have copies of are Tidal by Fiona Apple and Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos. Like Jagged Little Pill, they resonate differently as we, as women, age and gather more experiences in life.

I love that rock seems to be coming back and I'm all for people looking to this kind of music to inspire their own music but rock has a rawness and this super emotional tie to it and for people like GH to see how well it did and then just to cover it for views really showcases her being more one dimensional.
