    He wasn't a comedian he was the greatest philosopher of the twentieth century. Although I was never able to finish any of his books because of laughing so hard and tearing up... Read his daughters book very good read.

      To a point. But Carlin also had a very dark side to him and wanted his audience to take the trip with him to that dark side. Near the end, it was very bad and very unfunny. He could be very funny but could also be very cruel. His comments about Anorexia and Bulimia were wrong and hurtful. And he was also a hypocrite. He was anti-corporation but at the same time did commercials for those same corporations he bashed. His Las Vegas Concert near the end was awful. So bad that he was fired before checking himself into rehab. Stephen Colbert made reference to this on the HBO special saying it got really bad at the end.

    I remember when he went on the Flip Wilson show and took a break on stage, had a drink of water, and then shared that moment with the audience by putting the mike on his throat. A friend gave me his "Class Clown" album and I loved every bit on it. He didn't think of himself as a "hit-the-spot" type of actor, but I always enjoyed his work in films as well. So many things in government and politics haven't changed so many of his comments still ring true today.

    This documentary is required viewing for anyone who loves to laugh and think. More than even that it’s a touching love story of his first wife Brenda told in so many ways by his daughter Kelly and them him finding love again with his second wife. I knew very little about his personal life and having it in this wonderful documentary makes me love the guy even more!

    We Saw George Carlin at the Pabst Theater the year after his arrest at Summerfest. The first words out of his mouth was that he remembered to bring bail money. That got such a strong response from all of us. Looking back I realise how skilled he was at his craft. Like a master milkman working his herd of dairy cattle with little effort. The thing was his material has had such an impact for decades, and it still applies, and will continue for decades in the future. I will miss him not bringing new material. Of course we always will want more.

    The Avett Brothers doc was great. I'm sure this doc will be as well. I had a brief encounter with George Carlin when his daughter was getting married, sometime in the latter 80s. He was searching for a hotel to rent a few rooms for the occasion and I assisted by providing him with prices and brochures of the hotel I worked at. He was a dad looking to help his daughter with the details. He was lovely.

    I was in Catholic High School in the mid-1970's and invited two Jesuit instructors (at separate times) to my family home to listen to Class Clown in its entirety. Needless to say they both laughed themselves silly and loved every minute of it. George Carlin's insightful humor was so ingenious that nearly 50 years ago even the religious establishment could appreciate him. Think about this when you look at the religious establishment we face today and the regressive approach they represent on issues of personal freedom and personal responsibility.

    • @jKLa
      @jKLa Рік тому

      Well, only some. There were plenty of intolerant religious fundamentalists back then in reality. And today's increasingly authoritarian "Progressive" Democrats would be almost unregnizable. They almost surely would try to get him cancelled based on MANY things he said over the years!

    Carlin was an astutely critical comic who had a unique knack for deconstructing the common language, values, and symbols of our culture in a way that was both enlightening and rip-roaringly funny. Many comics since have taken a page or two from his book, but none come close to approaching his brilliance. Of the many great talent we have lost in the last decade and a half, Carlin is by far the most sorely missed by me.

    I wish George was around today. In a way he saw what was waiting over the horizon for America. His distrust in all established institutions to be honest and protect the citizens under its care (or cpntrol) was always a false light that people blindly followed. I credit him for leading me away from organised religion and being more critical in my thinking about authority figures. I got to see him live on four occasions over the span of twenty years or so. You see the evolution of a comedian. He wasn't playing it safe or was on stage to solely make the audience laugh. George was up there to make them think as well. Some describe his brand of comedy as "dark" or "pessimistic" but I never thought that about his style. It went into some dark and uncomfortable places but it was never designed to be just shock value and usually had a point and purpose. His bits on religion are among his best and calls out the multitude of hypocrisies they have indulged in, calling the bible the Greatest Bulls**t Story Ever Told. His revision of the Ten Commandments is hysterical. I wish we still had that angry voice nowadays. We need social critics who can make us laugh and think and see that there is commonality between our problems that has been lost in partisan dogma.

    One of the conversations towards the end of the documentary was the question as to whether or not Carlin evolved into a nihilist.... personally, i think he was a nihilist much like Colbert was a conservative on the old Colbert Show.... he's not, just played one on stage. And while he was constantly disappointed and saw little hope for humanity as a functioning entity, he loved and cared for many people very deeply........ i felt like this documentary allowed me to "peek behind the curtain"..... well-done, lots of info with few opinions, other than those represented by the people who knew him best.......
