"I kid you not" as a birth control pill name is a genius idea.
"One that doesn't work all the time: BABY MAYBE!"
That was my favorite of the list :)
Not really genius. It's mildly amusing though.

@@miked3168 there the good and the bad. Check out Andrew schulz.
@Alptraum He just had common sense. Anyone with an education will know that widespread use of untested medicine will lead to all sorts of horrors. Sadly, what wasn't understood was the effect of these hormone drugs circulating in the water systems and how it would collapse the fertility and birth rates on the long run. If this could have been imagined in advance, the pill would probably have never been released for the public.

It's astonishing when you compare the intellectual level of talk shows back then and those nowadays.
Vr Lux, I agree. I like to watch the old What's my Line? episodes. They are some of the most polite and eloquent people I've ever heard. But they're also greatly repressed if you watch the right shows. But it's still better than the toilet humor kid's shows we have nowadays.

Interesting to hear George speak normally and not tell jokes, just stories.
The birth control was a bit of his he was already working on at the time. I've heard that on his Album 'AM and FM'.
I could listen to his (young) voice all day if it were narration, lectures, etc.
The Dick Cavett Show was the best of all talk shows that have ever been or ever will be on TV. For many years now all talk show hosts are owned by either the left or the right and are completely biased. Back in the day a host as polished, clever and witty as Cavett could have an open dialog with his guests and discuss any subject. He allowed them to speak openly and did not interrupt them if they carried the conversation in an unpredictable way. This is exactly what America needs today more than ever.
George is what a real comedian is,none of his jokes seem rehearsed, just pure natural off the top of his head funny,r.i.p.brother
I’m really surprised to see “dope” talked about so rationally in ‘72 on a major network show.
Although my frame of reference is from growing up in the 90s, in the wake of the 80s war on drugs. I guess back then it maybe wasn’t as heavy of a subject.
dope was nothing when everyone was high on coke in the 70s.
The War on Drugs came in Hot and Heavy under Reagan. If it had been like that in the 70s, the Rolling Stones and every other great band would *still* be in the Pen.
Boss Nass. History has a tendency to repeat itself every 30 to 40 years. They say, anyway.
@@tleav61 simple direct but true
There was sort of a dichotomy back then. Even though society was more straight-laced, "controversial" subjects were regularly discussed on talk shows without any big hoopla. There was a bit more sophistication among the general public regarding such things.
This makes me nostalgic for a time I never experienced
hahahaha
2:23 I still can’t believe Carlin’s voice in old age was a voice he used in his 20s and 30s lol.
His lifelong fascination with and masterful handling of the English language places him right up there with Bob Dylan. He should've gotten a Nobel Prize for Literature too. But he got the Twain, and that's more meaningful.
Literature? That's for books... you know, literature. It was the Peace Prize

I feel so blessed to have seen this brilliant man in person so many years ago. He was performing at the Circle Star Theater in San Bruno, California. The singer that was to b his opening act had to cancel so we were rewarded with three hours of non-stop laughter from him. It’s something I will never forget.
Yup. He was in Omaha the weekend I was supposed to be doing some big-assed report on something or other, I can't remember, Jesus it was 50 years ago. He did his finger-popping joke and I was in heaven. I remember at one point thinking, "I'm going to fail class for not doing that report." I did. I can't remember the class, but I remember George.
I’m convinced Carlin was on the autism spectrum because I understand him so well. He also has stimming moments in interviews like this. Plus his fixation on language is very autistic

He had an incredible life and a long one. He and Christopher Hitchens are the two truly great social critics of the 20th century in my mind.
Just as difficult is finding his insight in anyone else who comes quickly to mind.
As do we all
As my dad told me, "We all have to die, I am just going to die before you." I remember that moment very well.
out of all the dope smokers i knew in my life. I knew 1 guy who was put together and literally a normal person while smoking marijuana. When he wasnt high he was a mess. This was the one guy I knew who needed it truly. I totally support this dudes usage.
When I was 34 I was doing my best to fit into society that wasn't and isn't worth fitting into. Wish I would have gone with my gut at 17, I would have avoided many unnecessary problems. Love him or hate George Carlin, he had some great points. Not enough honestly looking at things these days.

But all jokes aside that man was a genius
they went to commercials right when they were about to talk about WEED as a cure for Glaucoma
i'd say THAT is suspicious
yeah just wildly misinformed about marijuana.
@blue copper fair point.
But now 100years later, we are left without the next part, which may or may not have been shredded into the sewers
Seems like when people did interviews back then hey were more casual
Like,a regular conversation .it seems more genuine and relaxed than anything these days R.I.P. George Carlin-Goat 🤘
Well they use to invite real ppl with real talent...
Now ppl go to promote their book/movies/music etc... and there is a lot of propaganda
But you can tell that the host is somewhat scared of where Carlin would take things. In that way things have not changed, the hosts still sort of fake being shocked or being nicer than they actually are. "Oh no, this is a family show".. don't make the advertisement people nervous
Nowadays any casual conversation blends into an ad-read.
Talk shows were amazing back then.
Nah, Dick Cavett specifically was a really forward thinking guy. He had Hunter Thompson and invited all sorts of wild people, including Mohamad Ali etc. Dick had his own issues of course, like one time he asked Richard Pryor if white people could say the N word. Then again I think he did this in the 80's, and it was probably good on national television to have Pryor smack him down verbally for being casual about things he didn't understand. May even have set there interview up with Pryor, given all the rough racial issues in the 80's. Dick's shows weren't emblematic of normal tv though sadly, most tv channels were like less angry versions of ABC news leading up through the 80's. Sorta moderate but 100% shilling.
In Germany it's called Antibabypille. Straight to the point :D
The actual skit was on his album FM & AM, called Birth Control Pills. Had the album when I was 11.
Oh how I miss him and his wicked sense of humor we lost a great one when he died .

carlin is absolutely right, i used to smoke pot almost daily, when i had it. but i would use it in conjunction with many activities, chores or tasks became easier (and almost fun) to do, my ex-wife would go on a cleaning terror when high...i loved to play sports high, basketball, bowling, ping pong. nobody could beat me when i was high playing "pong". in our little group of course, but focus was more pronounced in physical activities, blocking out distractions was easier. musicians have used it for generations. of course there were many times it was used just to kick back and enjoy a video game or watch t.v.
but as far as being a musician, which i was, i didn't smoke pot when trying to learn a piece, or working on scales or theory. smoking was for the part after the serious study, it was used for the "creative" aspect of writing. thinking outside the lines. but you can't be high while trying to do complex or intricate study, maybe for some people but not me. it's different for every person.
There's a great story by Richard Wright of Pink Floyd about his decision never to smoke pot again. He said he'd had a joint and found himself on stage pressing down a note on his keyboard, not knowing whether he'd been pressing it down just for a few seconds or for the past hour. LOL
