Personally, it's a pretty much peak wagon, my father also had a green 850 T5, as a company car. After the obligatory 245 GLT, and a 740 GLT
I vividly remember him querying 'what the hell' the R meant when he got 'blasted' by one on the Motorway, I had to explain what it was 😁😁

Only a true petrol head especially around in the 90s will know straight away what car it is just from the title. You could've just said 5 cylinder from the 90s and we would've known. An absolute icon which every copper wanted to drive

Back in the 90s I was the proud owner of 1 of 200 Olive Green T5-R homologation estates. I had been working in London making my way back to the M4 and I was stuck at traffic lights opposite the Volvo garage in Twickenham. It was in the showroom, I rang the salesman the next day and he drove it out to Chippenham on a Saturday. I bought it after a short test drive. Nxx OAM. I then bought an orange V70R then an orange C70R. #goodolddays

Always regretted never buying a T5-R or certainly an 850R estate when 20 years ago a good 1 could be found for £3000 or £1500 for something reasonable. It was heartbreaking the abuse James Mays 850R got in the 2nd Top gear Africa special looked fantastic at £1500 at the start it was absolutely knackered by the roads at the end.

I had an Alfa 33 Sportwagons, an Cooper S clubman and have just bought an x-type Sovereign estate.

    Greetings from Denmark
I drive a Volvo 850 2.3 T5 stc on a daily basis. with automatic transmission and leather upholstery.
I have driven the car for 23 years and it has now covered 438,000 kilometers and still drives completely like a new car, and it is rust-free as it has been undercarriage treated every year with a rust protector.
These are super strong cars volvo 850, in a quality that is no longer made unfortunately, I myself have driven the 300,000 of the kilometers the car has driven and it has been an exquisite pleasure as it drives absolutely fantastic and has a good engine sound and good turbo powers.

Really enjoyed that. Doing up quality older cars and giving them an extended life has to be the way forward (car finance industry won’t like it however!). Iain Tyrrell had another example this evening.

Back in the early 90’s when I was a technician in R&D working for AVL these engines were capable of +300bhp 400Nm on the Deno and had to be tuned down for production to 200hp I believe

Johnny you find the best cars - but the strangest people!
My dad had a T5-R as a company car way back!

Spoiler: I laughed out loud when it turned over and started instantly! Absolutely love these cars. When I was 18 a friend of mine’s dad had a T5 as a company car and my friend was allowed to drive it. Unfortunately my friend was way too sensible and we never got to see what it could really do.
    Great barn find!

My dad had a 97 S70. Can't remember what engine but it was like hit shit off a slick shovel. Felt like you were in a touring car. Volvos of that era were wicked.

My 2 car was a 855 T5 one of the cars I miss the most. Whit a stage 1 tune and when that Turbo kicked in o boy o boy. It did 0-100 in 6.1 sec and it was a Station wagon whit the automatic

I understood that Volvo found this had a bit better aerodynamics than the sedan? Plus seeing a Volvo wagon passing BMWs was too good an image to pass up. Misha took a private tuned version around Nuerburgring. Highly impressive.
Might have been the fastest factory built wagon/estate, but I think the fastest was the 960 Paul Newman had built with a Supercharged 5.0 Ford V8, 380 hp and 400 ft lb. There's a hilarious story about how he persuaded David Letterman to get one as well. Letterman said "Sure thing" but had no idea what he was signing up for.
