Fun fact: The Rolls-Royce Meteor engine was so powerful that some of the members of test crews for the British Crusader and Cromwell cruiser tanks were injured during test drives. The engine had to have a limiter put on and the top speed of the tanks reduced so that the crew wouldn't be thrown about while driving. The tanks were able to go so fast, for the day, that the tank would de-track itself when turning at too high a speed. The Meteor would also go on to propel the Cold-War era Conqueror tank destroyer, which was a whopping 64 tons(71 short, 63 long). The Conqueror was able to go 35 km/h despite it's weight and size due to the Meteor M120 engine.

A V12 should be a smooth ride, that's why you use 12 cylinders, V6's aren't very balanced compared to a inline 6 (which a V12 is just two inline 6's side by side), but they're smaller and fit in to the engine well of an inline 4 chassis, you usually mount the engine on rubber and add heavier counter weights on the drive shaft reducing the torque to reduce vibration.
Yeah, that was weird. Watch Jonny Smith drive this car on Late Brake Show a year ago. He looks relaxed and said it drives like his 1968 Dodge Charger once you get going. On this video it looks a bit like a bucking bronco. Either the car has been mucked with or Thomas is being a bit "theatrical" with that wheel. I enjoy both channels but Jonny is more my style.
@@robertimrie3710Could be that Thomas isn’t used to driving down narrow streets like that and especially not in a huge car like The Beast, but he’s probably also playing it up for the camera

The cutdown of 8 headlights to 4 makes it look more like a real car that RR could have produced, if they weren't such a lame ass company driven by corporate dogma, that is.
I saw this car once. John used to have a automatic transmission workshop in the same city I live (Málaga). I was there to change my car's fluid. John in person showed me the car. He was pretty proud of his creation. He seemed to me like a really nice and funny guy.

Just about anything without power steering does that. Since power steering has become ubiquitous it hasn't been necessary to gapple with the wheel just to go down the road.
Usually huge-displacement engines are the domain of us Americans, but there’s something wonderfully old-school British about this beast… what a machine!
I remember the Beast being reported on "Blue Peter" on BBC tv back in 1972 or 1973, (I was 13 or 14 years old at the time) not too sure, but was captivated by the actual engineering of it, and it somewhat inspired (amongs other engineering marvels of the era) me to become an engineer. Kudos to John Dodd for the inspiration. I would love the chance to drive that magnificent Beast!
@@Paronak I think more just going at low speed or something is at play cause 80 year old John Dodd use to wheel the thing and you could see it in the video of him (kinda).

I have known about this car for many years. However, the crazy backstory of the "escape" to Spain is new to me. What a wild history, and what a wild man! And the new color is amazing! And that house it was parked in front of... just wow!
This is seriously cool. Concept, execution, story.. all of it. This wasn't built to be a car--this was built to be marveled at, to be a monument to history, and to be a giant middle finger. This displacement-loving American approves with three thumbs up.
I absolutely LOVE: 1) That it's still in the UK ...Surrey no less :-) 2) That it's not static in some museum. ...and 3) That the new owner is keeping the dream alive and what he's done to it so far.
I'm surprised to see that grille and statue; I thought RR insisted on their removal, so has the new owner now got permission to use them? I skipped parts of the video and may have missed an explanation.

When I was a child in Leeds England and a story of a horse riding Dodd passing cars on the autobahn with a car that had 27 litres when most had 2. It carved the story into my brain. R.I.P. John Dodd.
As a boy I loved the whole concept and philosophy behind the beast. Years later, worked in a shop that had an Allison V12 on a stand that we were playing with. A supercharged version. Always thought it would be amazing to put in a car. Funny video, but looks like the beast could use a front end upgrade. That excessive camber, and the sloppy steering wheel, along with the high steering effort and slow ratio, makes me think that a power rack and pinion, maybe electric, and some sorting on the coils and control arms might be a good idea. Or....maybe just leave it like it is and let it just be the beast.
I saw that too, and knew someone would comment on it. It makes me wonder why these guys didn't. Buddy was terrified, and rightly so. That thing shouldn't be on the road until whatever is causing that camber and steering wheel wobble is addressed. That said, it's a beautiful car! Should be a beautiful drive too.

Finally! A car more practical then the Cybertruck.
Better steering too.
And better looking!

james smiling while thomas fighting with the car steering would be a great meme
Yeah, that was weird. Watch Jonny Smith drive this car on Late Brake Show a year ago. He looks relaxed and said it drives like his 1968 Dodge Charger once you get going. On this video it looks a bit like a bucking bronco. Either the car has been mucked with or Thomas is being a bit "theatrical" with that wheel. I enjoy both channels but Jonny is more my style.
@@robertimrie3710Could be that Thomas isn’t used to driving down narrow streets like that and especially not in a huge car like The Beast, but he’s probably also playing it up for the camera
This video was too funny! Thomas was fighting was this car!😂😂
There's an interview with the creator of the Beast you can watch on UA-cam and he says the car is not easy to drive because of what he had to do so that Rolls-Royce Merlin engine would work with the car.
@@reganprince2042I think the part where he tries to navigate a British T-junction is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen on UA-cam
Gotta love when a UA-cam channel has you smiling through a whole episode, and you don't even realize it. I had a goofy grin on my face the whole time getting entertained by James and Thomas on this episode. You guys are great, keep it up!
I agree, amazing and crazy as fu€k. I had the same gesture while watching this insane video, but I was entertained nonetheless.😂
Man the new owner restored it beautifully. Props to the guy!
What a trusting owner. I have driven everything from ,racing boats to HGV trucks and sports cars.
Not scarred to try anything. I have even piloted a plane.
But this beast would terrify me, if being honest with you.
I even owned a 6 wheeler 38ft American RV.

Well done and great to see the Rolls Royce front grill back on her again
Lmao it actually has a whole ass startup procedure.
It's a 26L V12, of course it does. It's a fucking plane motor. I'm surprised that you don't have to start it from the outside!
EPIC
Watch Nico Rosberg’s AMG One episode. There’s a lot of things we take for granted to start an engine.
Haha. Not a half ass, a whole ass.
Dude literally fled to Spain and lived out his life there just so he could do that every day lol
I missed Top Gear with Clarkson, Hammond and May, those fools kept me laughing through the entire show. However, these two goofs alway make me burst out with laughter with their series.😂 I appreciate these funny gentle men.😂
Those two are the perfect men to carry on a car show in their footsteps....
I have a 1921 Hispano Suiza H6-they made it with a modified engine from the WWI French fighter planes. One of the fastest cars in the world at the time and a complete animal today. The engineer Mark Birkigt was a genius and so many innovations came out of HS from the era. Unbelievable what engineers can do when they put their minds to it…
It's mainly whether they are allowed to create stuff like this or not, sadly
The Napier Railton and some land speed record cars were all aero engined.
A Griffon powered Beast Mk2 would be a logical progression.

The cutdown of 8 headlights to 4 makes it look more like a real car that RR could have produced, if they weren't such a lame ass company driven by corporate dogma, that is.
What a car! Sad you couldn't drive it on a long and wide straight road. Would be awesome to see the power of this enigine on the road.
Thomas looked terrified driving that monster 😂
So this thing is approximately 42 feet long, massive rear differential, 12 cylinder from a WW2 aircraft, and still isn't heavier than a modern day SUV
Still does Teslas for lunch and all the petrol for dinner.

The first time I actually saw someone driving a car for real the way people drive in movies. Seesaw that steering wheel.
Drive an old american car.
Thats how they are
Just about anything without power steering does that. Since power steering has become ubiquitous it hasn't been necessary to gapple with the wheel just to go down the road.
That’s all old cars with high ratio steering boxes.
12:04 that is pure joy on that old guys face he loves it!
You just brought back memories with "Blue Peter". I used to watch it as a kid in London back in 1986. Was about 9 back then.
Quite like the changes to the design. The single row of front lights and the colour scheme are an improvement personally.

I honestly was fearing he would slip of the pedal and rear end the Audi.

And the new color is amazing! And that house it was parked in front of... just wow!
the beast is one of my all time favorite cars, it’s just such an outrageously amazing vehicle with a crazy backstory to it.
0:45 excuse me, who are you got me dying😂
This is seriously cool. Concept, execution, story.. all of it. This wasn't built to be a car--this was built to be marveled at, to be a monument to history, and to be a giant middle finger.

Thomas's face just after he said that is pure gold.

It gives the phrase "this car is like driving a tank" a whole new meaning.
Having driven in one of the APCs running a similar Rolls Royce engine from shortly after WW2, it is. They sound remarkably similar, and equally deafening.
