Admiral Kelly was the CO of Cape May as an O-6 when I went to boot camp in 2012. Now superintendent of the CGA. And he still looks the same. That's impressive.
He more than likely has a healthy lifestyle. It's amazing how eating right, exercising, and abstaining or minimizing bad habits can do. I did 20 years in the Navy, and many people are shocked that in my early 40s... they usually say I look too young to be retired from active duty. There are people my age who did the same time as me, and they look old AF because they ate crap, smoked half a pack a day, drank alcohol in excess, and didn't exercise save for semi-annual PT tests.
i did my enlisted time, i think coast guards a great gig for people that need a career and aren't from rich families or just want to serve a few years. The benefits are great and you'll almost certainly travel somewhere you've never been. But it does have trade offs like not having full control where you live or for how long.

It turns out that the military, police and coast guard academies in America have the same 5 years of education, unlike Indonesia, we don't have a coast guard academy.
I served in the Coast Guard... A bit of advice to those cadets TDY on an afloat unit: 1. You're a cadet, not an officer (hopefully yet and not never) Do not think you can climb aboard a tell junior enlisted and other petty officers what to do. You haven't earned that right yet. 2. Don't expect, ask, require or assume enlisted will salute you. You are NOT an officer. You are there to learn and gain experience. 3. You will have to mess cook. It sucks no matter what rate or rank you are. Everyone has done it in their career at some point. So no whining. 4. Expect to be placed on the duty section as a break-in. You learn to be lookout, helmsman, and possibly the BMOW 5. If you get a chance, participate in flight quarters as a tie-down (especially if you are looking to be in aviation) 6. Participate in BOAT LOWERING details 7. Hang out and talk to at least one person in every department. (MKs, medical, galley, engine room, deck force, combat ect) 8. BEWARE OF 8H: Even Though you are not PCS to these units, you are still attached for the moment. That means you must abide by the rules and regulations about having a relationship on board an afloat unit...which is NEVER! When you on a cutter, think of it as a small village with a population of no more than 400. Perception is also everything. People talk and people gossip. RULE OF THUMB: When it comes to small groups, It doesn't matter if you are innocently hanging out on the fantail or you're at a port call, you need to make sure the amount of people in your group is an ODD number. 3, 5, 7 etc. If it started out as 3 and One left, now you're 2.. Fixing it by making it 1 by either walking away or walk over AND join another group. 8H is a career killer...especially for officers. We had a female LTJG kicked out of the Coast Guard because she was dating an E-5 MK (MK: a mechanic) and used the satellite phone to call him when he was at a "C" school in Yorktown. It was really sad because when she got kicked out, she found out she was pregnant. Now if for some reason LOVE happens to find you, the best way to cover your ass and save your career is by informing your command. You may get an NJP (captains Mast), knocked down in rank, restricted (cannot leave the ship) AND transferred to a different unit. Trust me, being honest is scary but the result is much better in the end . . . .
