  • This short story tells the tale of the trials and tribulations of the Coast Guard Academy Cadet, and what it is that calls them each year to sacrifice so much for others. From fourth class to retired admirals, the stories of perseverance are consistent, and it is evident that the drive to attend this institution cannot be understated.
Formulated spring of fourth class year, it is a true honor and joy to have seen this project through to fruition. We would like to thank everyone who believed in us and helped us bring the stories of others to life.
Special thanks go to Allie Marsh for everything she did to make this possible, and Commander Gary Thomas at the Foundation For Coast Guard History.
Note: This spirit video does not represent the views of the US Government, nor the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The viewpoints represented in this story are those of individuals and their unique opinions alone. Additionally, since this project has been in the works for over a year, filming has been impacted by the onset of COVID 19, and many shots were taken before COVID 19 existed.

This is so incredible, I am honored to have played a small role in the realization of this project. You tell a story like no other, I will never be able to shake these emotions no matter how many times I watch it. Just absolutely incredible

Love this video. Reminded me so much of my own experience in 1973 and "The Day I left Home". Yes...left my family, friends and what was comfortable behind. But gained a whole new FAMILY and discovered what I could do when I put my heart and sole into it. Led to a very rewarding 30 year career.

This is really exceptional. It transported me back to the day I left home in June 1985 to go to New London.

I am currently applying for the academy and the class of 2025. It’s been a strange year so far and this video gave me some hope that I really needed. The cinematography is amazing as well. Very professional.

It is heart warming to hear that cadets could rely on their classmates and would do anything for each other. That wasn’t my experience.

I'm sorry that wasn't your experience. I hope you are well. I am a USNA grad not USCG. It was mostly good. This appears to me to be basically marketing and nothing else.

All the Army to Coast Guard people I've spoken to say CG was way harder for boot camp, but more relaxed afterwards.

As someone who went through Coast Guard boot camp I have to strongly disagree. We had two people die on our obstacle, now called challenge, course. What sticks with me was on the 4th day of forming week, the base commander came in and gave me something that stayed with me through my whole Coast Guard career and into my civilian life. "If we have to save you while we are doing our job of saving someone else, you are of no use to the Coast Guard." CAPT A.B. Howe, commander USCG TRACEN 1974. I went on to serve for 11.5 years as a search and rescue helicopter pilot and later a C130 pilot.
