As far as I know, the form Chuck's in isn't a vessel, there isn't/wasn't ever a human inhabiting that body. This is a visage that Chuck simply chose to use when walking on Earth.
I've heard different theories from Rob Benedict. I've always thought that prophets were the vessels, and he didn't choose Kevin.

Most of the fans pretty much guessed that Chuck was God after the season finale of season 5 Swan Song episode when he disappeared into thin air after monologuing! I speak for everyone when we say we couldn't wait until you got to this episode lol

He sings this at many of the conventions with his band. The reason he wasn’t on the show for so long is that he suffered a stroke while at one of those conventions.

I absolutely *love* the scenes between Chuck and Metatron this episode. I actually really like Metatron at this point in the show. I love that him living as a human gave him this new perspective.
Curtis Armstrong kills it with this scene. Metatron is an annoying character but Curtis does such a good job playing him. His speech about humanity is perfect.

I was in the same boat, but considering that took place at the end of the Kripke era, most people, myself included, started to doubt that that was still the case. Many assumed it had been retconned.
Yeah i had the biggest double take at the end of season 5, when I realized Chuck was god. I was waiting SOOOOOO long for him to come back, worth it!
I was a die-hard fan and I had no idea. It was just weird to me, but no clue.

At the end of Swan Song, Chuck is dressed nicely, drinking a glass of liquor & disappears. That was the clue that he was God. This is one of my favorite episodes.

I love the ending of this episode. One of my favorite moments of the series- Fare Thee Well. Kinda makes me tear up
I love so many things like the coffee mug saying "World's Greatest Dad" being one of the first things we see before Chuck. Underrated quote: "No one likes a helicopter parent." - LOVE IT!

Up until this episode "Chuck is god" was a long running joke in the fandom.
I still remember during like season 8 I was on supernatural wiki and saw that Chuck was officially labeled God on the wiki by fans. The community basically knew at the end of season 5 but it was confirmed in fan fiction because only one prophet can exist at once and Kevin was alive when Chuck was.
God wouldn't need a vessel since he created the Universe so he could just create a body for himself

You were the closest to calling it that I've seen! When you were so focused on him disappearing is swan song I thought you would figure it out. You got close with the vessel guess. You're also the only other person that didn't completely forget about Chuck..including me lol

Dude, seriously. I figured Chuck was god since the ending of season 5. It made perfect sense. The way he vanished into thin air after writing the "ending". The way he acted and how his books were always spot on. It made more sense for him being God "in witness protection" rather than a prophet. Like Gabriel used Loki's image to hide. And then, of course, the SPN way of throwing huge plot twists at you. I was getting too used at being surprised so I just said out loud "What if he's God? It makes sense." Obviously, no one believed me when I said it. HAH. The fun I had when it became canon
It was very hard not giving you a life line back in the day when you threw out the idea that Chuck was God. I have been looking forward to you seeing this one.
And now you know. Great episode. Diehards knew season 5 finale, there was a strong possibility he was god. For me, the seasons just keep getting better from here

I too, was shocked. I never thought much of Chuck. I liked him as a prophet, the "oscar winning performance" of being burden by this visions and headaches, getting numbed with alcohol to forget the horrors, calling dominatrixs on the phone to erase the pain the visions had left in his soul. When he disappeared I thought he had served His cause and was now to rest in the heavenly fields. Then he appeared again in the 200th and I was like: WTF did I just watch? Nothing made sense but it was so good I didn't want to question it. Then I didn't see him again till this happened.
Also I live in Mexico so I didn't have access to my-time Supernatural gossip. And going online was just asking for spoilers so...

I always thought there was a real guy named Chuck, who was a “normal” prophet. Sometime before ‘Swan Song’ the prophet was possessed by G_d. That’s how I always told the story in my head canon anyway.
Rob Benedict (Chuck) actually performs at Supernatural Conventions with his rockband of other Supernatural cast members including Richard Speight Jr (Gabriel), Mark Sheppard (Crowly), and Jensen Ackles (Dean). You should see a couple videos of their performances of songs like "Brother" and "Carry On Wayward Son". I'm pretty sure other cast members have played and sung with the band too.

Chuck told us he was god the first time dean and Sam met Chuck no one took him seriously and thought he was a prophet
It's funny how Chuck is like one minute who cares about her its my story super serious then minutes later he's almost like jokey saying he's throwing in towel heh its her time to shine lol. I think we getting glimpses into his true character and bits of him still being Chuck and setting up the story for Sam and dean to save the day again cause he's god so he knows what's going to happen next right especially in this where he writes everything that's happening lol. Plus love the moments where he's getting mad like when Megatron says his stupid book and chuck like you think its stupid and thunder booms lol. Or when he's called a coward and he throws Megatron through the doors lol. Always loved Chuck episodes always wish he had more wanted flashbacks of his time on earth him creating this earth and the other earth's even the first earth lol. More explanation on how things work too cause first time we meet Chuck he tells what Sam and dean what's going to happen they're like they'll change it but they could never change it anything they do it still ends up happening. Now we find out they can change things I guess. He blames them for letting the darkness out. Seems like he wanted demon dean to stay around longer but Sam had to mess that up

Maybe they can change things unecpectingly like maybe he wrote everything to happen they couldn't change anything but then dean comes to Chuck and chuck is like you're not supposed to be here I didn't write this maybe that was genuine surprise like he literally didn't write that they just changed something and he's like what the he'll but he rolled with it lol. But he blames the humans for the wars. Didn't he write that?? Lol he blames them for letting Lucifer out lol. Didn't chuck write that??? Lol he's been writing the Angels to let UT happen maybe cause it was up to Sam and dean to save the world and stop it lol. Like in this he's letting the darkness win so Sam and dean can save the day lol

I’ve been waiting the entire show for this moment. The moment you see Chuck for who he really is. Kind of brilliant ( I mean, sure, it was a little predictable with how they set it up, but I’m definitely not complaining about that choice).
And yes, that is Rob actually singing. He actually has a band that plays at conventions.

Loves Chuck singing lol. So he's been watching and acting the whole time lol. This is so cool cause it's obviously a fictional version of god but very realistic and stays true even can connect to other depictions in other shows lol. Were those other depictions all the same god he's just going by Chuck in this show but on other shows or worlds he goes by other names and maybe even look different lol. Like in final episode of quantum leap god appears but he don't say it he even just acts dumb like he don't know what's going on like he don't know what Sam is talking about but you can see in his eyes he does lol. Same thing here god loves to act he knows everything that's happening going to happen and he does nothing like Dean would say lol. He don't need to explain himself. He's the lord he works in mysterious ways lol but dean don't accept that lol.
everyone knew that chuck was god, in fact after that episode where he disapeared while in white the theory was he was either god the father or Jesus. but after that season Rob Benedict said that he was asked by the show runners how it felt to play god. so fans NEW he was god since season 5

I am proud to say that I thought Chuck was God in his first episode after he said the line “Obviously I’m a God.” And Sam told him he wasn’t. I just thought that would be funny but then everything started clicked into it really being him.

I could see the parents being so excited omg Jared padalecki is carrying my child lol. I've always wondered if Chuck was god or was there a god that created everything starting with empty cause nothing there then the darkness cause big bang universe being created but in space always darkness even when earth was created it was darkness then god said b let there be light which is Chuck and the balance between light and darkness is created. Everything else was created but god gave darkness Chuck and amara back stories if not at first in this so then he's not in story. So Chuck is playing god but he's not really god he's like you said gods vessel he has some of his power but he's not god. God can't be beat by his sister or anybody. God wouldn't sit around let everything get destroyed lol. I mean he has a plan he has it all planned out like he's a writer he knows everything which Chuck don't know everything he knows a lot plus he's not all powerful lol. In this arc with amara hes not even close to all powerful if anything amara is more powerful than he is lol. Chuck be like hulk says puty god lol. But on these hrs better than later ones but I like him in those too lol. Wish we got to see more backstory on god see the other worlds him creating them other Sam and deans lol. All that god has seen done love Chuck and that actor lol.
