For anyone interested, Mario 3 was first introduced in the west in the movie The Wizard, which was about a kid that was a wiz at Nintendo games and he goes to play in the championship where Mario 3 is the final game. The whole movie is basically a commercial for Nintendo with cringe dialed up to 11. The kid goes hitless through Ninja Gaiden. His brother is blown away that he gets 50,000 points on Double Dragon even though you can do that on the first screen of the game. The Power Glove actually works. He finds the SMB 3 first warp whistle on his first play through. Someone tells him to get the star at the end of a level for more points, despite never seeing the game before, he gets a flower and they cheer like he got the star. So many ridiculous things but it’s fun to watch.
If you want to listen to music that influenced Nintendo composers during the NES era and beyond, check out “Adventures” by T-Square in 1984. One of the band members would later work on the Mario Kart 8 soundtrack.
I think that if comparison videos like this are to be done in the future, it would be good to contrast games along the same genre and/or around the same year (as cartridge sizes drastically increased near the end of the system's life). The Legend of Zelda would be a more apt comparison to Deadly Towers (Adventure Games in 1986) while SMB3 works with Back to the Future Part II & III (Platformers in 1990), for instance.
Did you know three teams tried to make a follow-up to the same game at the same time? And the results were best of genre, flawed but fun mid-tier, and hot garbage? Streetfighter 2, Fatal Fury, and Human Killing Machine. From the company that made the original, the ex-employee who created the original, and the team that ruined the ports of the original. If you want to compare game design in a way that's as fair as possible? You could do a lot worse.
"The Millennial Reprise" sounds like the title of a trendy book that eventually gets a play based off it that misses the original point. Great name for the phenomenon 👍
The Subliminal messaging was a cool touch. It was your far less obvious "subliminal commentary later on the most though as I'm a fan of playing games my parents, or I bought in the 80s, 90s or 2000s because I'll be damned if I am paying for them again! I am not sure if I have suffered through Deadly Towers or not going through my list of NES roms but chances are I died very fast, said F this and moved on stopping at Dragon Warrior. However, way back in 1991, I took 1st place at my local Pick N Save "Super Mario 3" contest which required getting the most points within 10 minutes, starting on Stage 1-1. And I will give you one guess what trick I used.....since I only had 10 minutes! It was amazing to see how many people signed up for this contest way back then. I think I checked at least 3 times a week for a month since it was only blocks away from us and that's where I did most of my NES renting. When I saw I was against well over 100 other people (that was a lot back then in my opinion) I knew I probably wouldn't win as easily as I thought I was going to -- I trained HARD for that bitch, let me tell you!
What's the use of this? It feels like you wanted to talk about Mario 3 but didn't think a simple positive review of Mario 3 wouldn't do well so you just decide to bash on Deadly Towers alongside it while making some really weird jokes that don't land. Who are the people standing up for Deadly Towers and saying it's misunderstood? I'd love to know because in the current context it just feels like you're taking a jab at a group of people for no good reason. No real point to make other than "lol thing bad." That's not how you wanna get people to listen to you. A dissection of "Why Deadly Towers is Good, Actually" would be a lot more interesting than pointing towards the top rated game of a system and then punching down on another game which isn't even in the same genre. Anyone can make comparisons like that. It's tacky. You can do better than this.
i agree with this comment so much. as a fan of past videos on this channel i only hope to see it grow and succeed. if i wasnt as hopeful for the content on this channel, i most likely would have unsubscribed after watching this video. just to move on and find one of thousand of other video essay channels that fit right and dont disappoint

I just gave it a listen. HUGE Mario Kart vibe. Stoked to learn about this.

Masayoshi Takanaka, T-Square, CASIOPEA, Naniwa Express: all major Japanese jazz fusion bands that influenced Kondo. Great music.
YESSIR
