While I personally grew up with the original Super Mario Bros. and the 3D Mario games, I always have an appreciation for Super Mario World because of how tightly designed it is. It's a super solid platformer and as you said, it basically defined the Mario formula.
9:00 funnily enough, they are actually named after Trent Reznor. The dude who localized mario world worked at a record label before working for Nintendo, hence why all the Koopa kids (and reznor) are named after musicians.
The GBA version is the best version, letting you save anywhere, easily track which exits you've done, save after beating the game, and play as Luigi with his unique physics

Just for a minor tidbit, if you can bring a Yoshi into the Ghost Ship stage, they'll appear in a faded form in one section. That might explain a bit further why he wasn't allowed into Ghost Houses. They couldn't get Yoshi to display properly in there. :)
I never liked this game as much as everyone else, until I watched this video, then I went back to the game after watching this with a more objective mindset and found myself really enjoying it, still not as much as most people seem to though, and I think I realized why I’ve been so harsh on this game. It’s because it, in my mind, stood as direct competition to my favorite game of all time, Sonic 3&K, and so I’ve always compared it to that game, and it’s no contest for me. The nostalgia, my love for Sonics gameplay, the fact I’ve been playing sonic games, and sonic 3&K since I was 5, it always gave me bias against super Mario world, but now, thanks to videos like this one, I’m able to find ways to set my biases aside, and just play a game as objectively as I can, and I’ve found a new appreciation for Mario world because of it. So thank you Trav, for all the wonderful experiences you’ve given me, I’ve gotten into mega man, DOOM, and now super Mario world, because of your videos, and I can’t wait to see what comes next
I must have been saving this video for a rainy day. I love that you can look at things open mindedly and compare the variation between nostalgia vs a current games feelings. Also, the Blargs are the original Derpy.
The Sunken Ship is actually representative of the Flying Ship levels in Super Mario Bros. 3 which you initially access via the castles at the end of each world, if you die in one of these levels the ship will fly to another spot on the Level Select Screen and you have to hunt it down to try again.
Nostalgia is a powerful drug, I did beat this as a kid but I think it's more difficult than Mario 3. P.S. "He's presumably dead in Miami" I died, that was so randomly morbid.
Here's the thing : You don't need to beat the Bonus Wing level to turn your Green to Blue Yoshi. Just getting the wings automatically changes them to Blue. "What's with the Sunken Ghost Ship? Is it like the Fortress levels?" It's a downed Airship from Mario 3...duh.
A football player throwing baseballs wasn’t an odd thing in the 90’s thanks to sports superstar Bo Jackson. I’m not into sports at all and even I knew of Bo Jackson being a Baseball & Football All-Star.
I really wanted Mario World when I was younger and I had to use 3ds Mario Maker's Super Mario World theme to suffice until I eventually got a Snes Classic
Uhm, aktchually, in the GBA port of mario 3, there was a card for the GBA E reader addon that gave you the cape feather as an item, ypu could play mario 3 with the cape feather.
Going from doom and quake to Mario world?!...I’m down with it. Seriously though, this (or more accurately, the gba version) was the first game I remember playing and even with odyssey and galaxy, this is my favorite in the Mario series and one of my favorite games of all time. Nice job on the review, Trav.
In my ever so humble opinion, I think Super Mario World is the best 2d Mario ever made, and I say that with no nostalgia attached. I wasn't even a twinkle in my mother's eye when this game came out (I'm 16 at the time of writing this) I just think it's a well designed and incredibly fun game. The New Soup games don't even come close.
Fun Fact!: NSMB2's final castle has a segment where the koopalings are all piloting bowser's clown car, where it has the ability to turn you to stone!!!
🙂 this game holds a special place in my life. It's actually my very first video game, *along with mega man x2* I play this game to death, even to the point where i still got it on my wii, and I even have the gba version, in which i adore just as much, even with the little voice clips and sure the music is rather mixed, I didn't mind them since the snes game was pretty damn good, I especially loved the ghost houses and the track that plays as well *even to the point where it's remixed in super Mario galaxy 2* beating bowser for the first time was rather amazing 🙂 and even I agree with you about those green bubbles, I have no clue what they are, furthermore, you can kill the big boo in one of the ghost houses by a slide *I believe it's the same house where you fight another boo with the blue blocks*
Trav: One dev really liked Yoshi’s Cookie… oh wait that game hasn’t come out yet. Me: lol Later after hearing ability stack Me: Like Samus’s beams in Super Metroid and onward… wait we’re not at that point yet. 😅 Trav: Yellow shells which make Yoshi completely useless. Me: Actually the dust clouds defeat enemies caught by it.
I'm a huge fan of 3 and like World less, but it's still a pretty fun game overall. One of my favorite aspects of it is how the soundtrack utilizes one motif (leitmotif?) or melody to be used in most of the songs. It even ranges in mood from the jaunty overworld themes to the creepy ghost house theme to what I'd even call a somber version in the castle theme. Honestly shows how great Koji Kondo was and is as a composer.
I've tried playing SMW on an Android emulator with a 8bitdo controller, and maybe it's because of the emulation but it felt like there was a delay. I got as far as Donut Dome before I put the game down. I think I'll retry it on Switch soon...after I finish my marathon of Classic Mega Man. One thing I really hated about SMW was the item storing. I really hate how the item would come down automatically after getting hit. When I played it on emulator the item was often in an irretrievable position. Not to mention that it phases through the floor so there's a limited amount of time to get it. I found this system so frustrating that I honestly wished they had SMB3's item system, thankfully NSMB DS handles it way better. Good vid.
This game gives me so many emotions. None of them estatic. First time I played it was at a cousin's house. But he played it mid game and the skill gap of a 4 year old who has never played any game, I died many times. Every other time has been on emulators and never really finished until just recently. Like I only beat it yesterday after many years. And to this game, I dont get why I find this game so hard and frustrating. I beat cuphead, doom eternal and other harder games than this. Yet for some reason I find this game so hard for some reason
While Super Mario World isn't the first 2D Mario game I played (that would be the the GBA release of Super Mario Bros), it is the first one I beat. I played it multiple times as a kid though -emulators- totally legal methods, but I didn't beat it until years later on the Wii U port, and I save stated my entire way through. I remember let's player Chuggaaconroy saying something to the effect of being recommended Mario 3 for how good it is, but he didn't feel much since he already played World, and I'm kinda in the same boat.
Super Mario World was my first video game ever, but I didn't beat a game until Pokémon Blue. I later beat SMW on gba and then again on virtual console.
I always felt that super mario world, in retrospect, has a very basic asthetic. It's not like mario-allstars or yoshi's island, where they pulled out all the stops for the visuals. So to me, the levels always look like Nintendo was still getting used to the architecture of the super nintendo.
the only two things I don't like about SMW: 1. that after the first one or two levels it forgets about having dinosaur enemies for most of the game (cuz dinosaurs are fucking awesome) and 2. that every level song is the same main melody cuz that really gets irritating after a while (yes I have this problem with Mario Land 2 as well)
Somewhat! Recently he's been sketching them, and I do the rest (lining, coloring, shading). I could technically do it myself but I absolutely love his style. The thumbnail art for the Doom 1, Quake, and some earlier ones were entirely done by Gamerbot
I play through Super Mario World at least once every 5 years or so. It’s the best 2D platformer Mario. Diddo with Mario 64. It’s the best 3D Mario. That could be nostalgia talking but I’ve replayed Mario 64 more than any other.
I Just finished one more */96 Run of SMW today and i think this is justa a fantástic vídeo game and it's Just as good as It where in 1990(year i was born)
Kind of silly to say that it lacks in power-ups, with spin jumping crushing turn blocks when you're Super Mario gave the regular Mushroom an extra to not just be an extra hit, with Yoshi functioning as several power-ups in one and with being able to throw upward that turns shells into a pseudo power-up you're really selling the game short on this regard imo
see, ,i have th e same issue. i grew up with mario world, ,easily m y favorite video game of all time. but the difculy is easily thrown off by how muc h we have played it in the past...
I'd hesitate to give Mario Bros 3 too much credit for having four power ups. The Super Leaf suit is the only one that shows up consistently and is any part of the game design. I've beaten the game several times and have literally never seen or used the Hammer Bros or Tanuki suit. The Frog Suit comes up occasionally but is terrible to use.
I like how Mario has no problem disposing of Yoshis left and right, yet for some reason he just has to save the Yoshis in the castles.
More Yoshis to jump off of lol
Because they are baby Yoshi
hey if you extinct the lizards you cant murdet em anymore!
That's the player's fault not Mario's yall really like to make Mario look like a dick lol

this is extremely true
super mario world is in my opinion, the hardest game in the series.
Bro, I felt like the biggest badass when I finally beat Bowser at age 7.
The Ghost ship is actually the Airships from Mario 3 that you took down.
Like a ship graveyard?
Super Mario World is honestly one of my favorite games of all time. It is interesting to see a fresher take on this game

It's a shame visually it's a massive downgrade. I get why, I'd still prefer to play any other snes version

Not even bringing attention to the fact that Eliiot died in a Switch Palace. Or RAMPS

The Cape Feather, a power-up item so OP, it was never used again on other 2D platform Mario games. And yet, it's very iconic.
Uhm, aktchually, in the GBA port of mario 3, there was a card for the GBA E reader addon that gave you the cape feather as an item, ypu could play mario 3 with the cape feather.
I wish the Cape would return. In 2D or 3D.

This, SMB3 and SM64 are the holy trinity of Super Mario games.
