This game was the most drastic swing from ‘not really feeling this’ to ‘holy shit I must have more’ I’ve ever had from a video game. Started out hating the floating feeling and short jumping ability of Plague Knight, but once you’re a few hours deep switching up bomb components on the fly and almost answering your enemies automatically when you hit that flow state, it’s incredible. Downright stupid fun.
Cool I haven't played this one yet but just recently bought Treasure Trove and just finished the main campaign. Did you know Shovel Knight went to Florida for vacation? This short says so. Fun fact, in the end, when you fight Shadow Plague Knight or whatever their name is, if you stay still for about 1 minute or so the shadow gives you a free win
Remember kids, this is the only Shovel Knight expansion that you cannot buy on it's own. If you make the mistake of not getting Treasure Trove, you cannot play this absolute beauty of a game.
I'm glad I just bought treasure trove last week. Though this game has been around for 10 years now I had never played it before. Just finished the first campaign Shovel of Hope. Looking forward to playing through the other versions.
@@Genzaijh Unfortunately, they somehow made it worse with the announcement of Shovel of Hope DX, which will not be retroactively added to Treasure Trove. It is now going to be *impossible* to buy all of the Shovel Knight games, and have the definitive version of every Shovel Knight game, without buying at least 2 copies of the exact same game.
I'm honestly surprised more games don't take this format, replaying the same story from the villain's perspective. Imagine how many franchises this would work phenomenally for. For example, if you replayed Halo CE from the Arbiter's perspective or played as Bowser planning the heist to kidnap Princess Peach.

Plague of Shadows will always hold a special place in my heart. I know the next expansions take the idea of playing as a new character way further, but there is something magical about Plague Knight's moveset. It's so awkward at first but once you start getting the hang of it you fly through the levels. I replay all the campaigns every once in a while and I always love returning to Plague of Shadows, even though King of Cards is probably my favorite out of them all.
Plague of Shadows will always be my favorite Shovel Knight campaign because of its *chemistry*, both in actual gameplay with his move set that makes the same levels feel super fresh, and Plague Knight and Mona, I live those two so damn much they carry the experience way more than the gameplay itself already did. Their last dance scene deserves to one of the best in gaming history. I love it so much
This campaign slowly became my favorite out of the four, I just fell in love with the gameplay. It's the only one where I can claim that Propeller Knight's stage is my favorite to play through.
Speaking of Propeller Knight, I remember him being an absolute nightmare to fight against in Plague of Shadows until I found a combination of Plague Knights attacks that worked better.
Shovel Knight just being asleep for practically the whole boss rush has to be the best thing in this DLC. Another great shovel knight video btw! Keep it up!
With this and shovel knight sleeping so often that plague knight can steal his essence in his sleep, maybe he is a slumbering blue baby. His true calling is Z's.

Sorry if its a stupid question, Haven't played Plauge of Shadows yet. Just finished the main campaign of Shovel of Hope. So I'm new to the franchise. It was a wonderfuly fun game and there were various momments in the game that I just busted out laughing. Like when you battle the guy selling hats, and then you run into him mutiple times after you defeat him.

33:22 when I first played though Plague of Shadows being just my least favorite campaign somehow the story and especially this ending screen somehow made it all worth it, in fact it makes me feel proud in some way.
I think part of why Plague of Shadows is my favourite campaign of them all (alongside it having my favourite story) is it’s mid-max gameplay potential. On my first play through, i mainly stuck to the loadout I was most comfortable with, and didn’t stray away from it. But upon repeated playthroughs, and ESPECIALLY when I tried to speed run the game, I started experimenting with all the different bomb, arcana and burst combinations to find the most optimal loadout for each level. The Frost Burst would be incredible against bosses that I could jump over like King Knight and Shovel Knight, but for more speedy bosses like Spectre and Propeller Knight, I’d find myself swapping to the spin burst to charge into them like a ballistic missile. This experimentation is at its best when you aren’t just casually strolling through the game, but you’re showing off your big alchemist brain skills and aiming to beat the game in under an hour or beat the bosses without taking damage. Not to say the other campaigns CANT have this with their own special items, but with them their best solutions are usually the same every time (phase locket, judgement rush etc), but Plague Knight rewards you making your own choices so much that I don’t even care that the level design is reused. He’s just THAT fun to play! Great retrospective dude! You’ve got a new subscriber!
I hope you'll take some time to highlight Specter Knight's "hard mode" as it's way better than the ones you get with other campains. For context it makes your hp bar a countdown and killing stuff is the only remedy, making the already fast-paced gameplay an really fun and devious speedrun. Compared to the usual "now enemies do more damage" options it's incredible.
I was playing Kirby Squeak Squad on mute while listening to this so suddenly hearing the game's music blaring in my ears at 11:52 freaked me out for a second. Heart almost popped out of my chest. 😅
Did you know that in the boss fight against the Plague of Shadows (the fight between the Enchantress and the final boss) you can just stand still for like ten seconds to end the fight? Again, great video as usual. I really relate a lot to how much you love this game. That teaser at the end with From the Shadows playing while Specter Knight appears was just superb. Greatly looking forward to that one.
You can also attack the machine the final boss is riding to remove the plasma, and when you remove it all and hit it again, it will stun the boss and allow you to get easier damage (also kinda making the boss the easiest of the four final bosses)
I seriously cannot wait until you do spectre of torment and king of cards. The love and admiration for this game is incredible and I’m totally geeking out with you. I think this one is my favorite shovel knight game of all. Anyway, keep up the good work, hope you’re ok
With DX coming out soon I think it would be totally awesome to play as Propeller Knight, I think hes my favorite character that Ive seen thus far after beating Shovel of Hope main campaign. It would be fun to play as Tinker Knight too but would be fun if he was as he is portrayed as a weaker character, and thus winning with him would actually be harder, consider it a hard mode.

During the final boss fight you can attack the pink circle he is sitting on to temporarily disable the final boss and have a much larger attack window. You may know this but I didn't see you discuss it nor in the footage shown.
I haven't played Plague of shadows yet, I've been playing Shovel of hope but this campaign looks really cool, especially the bomb customization, I'm definitely going to play it either after I beat Shovel of hope or after I beat a few more stages, anyways good video, excited for the Spector and King knight videos.

The float burst is great and all but I urge anyone who's got the hand of the controls to try the other ones for a second playthrough. The float is slow and predictible and thus kind of boring after a while. Think of it like training wheels! Go on, be a big boy and take them off!

Plague Knight caused me the most trouble in my original playthrough, so playing as him while spamming bombs is the most cathartic feeling in the world

the Staff of Striking is actually good, tricky to use, but it'll dish out QUICK damage to bosses.

Plague of Shadows is fine but I just could not gel with the movement.
Plague Knight does NOT look like a Patrick. Cancelled immediately. He looks like a Henry or a Tom or a Jack or a Bartholomew
