Thanks for the review and kind words! Here's an essay length follow-up to a few points: - Per frequent notes of 3-hit bosses, that's more or less the standard in a majority of Mario games, including Mario 3 for the most part, so I just decided to make it a rule. Early in development some of the World 2 bosses (e.g. Wart) did have 5 hits, but eventually everything aligned at 3. - Not sure why you were experiencing that weird freeze with Big Boo. I vetted the game on actual hardware, so all I can say is that emulator must be doing something quirky. - Reznor (World 4 miniboss) does cause tremendous slowdown. Truth is, it's using every object slot and sprite available to do 4 Reznors plus 4 platforms. I never could imagine a way to get it to run faster. Basically was just running up against a limitation of the SMB3 engine there. - World 5's boss is sort of a play on both Cobrat and Tryclyde, so you're right there. Since he's down to one head, I just called him Clyde. I actually was just going to do outright Tryclyde at first, but I thought it'd be too similar to the Wart battle. The Clyde sprite was actually a mistake when I started working out the sprite where the one head got rammed into the body and I decided to just go for the single-headed design instead. - The World 6 Bowser Jr hitting himself was strangely something that never came up in my testing, but it's come up in a lot of others. In this one case it's a glitch that works in the player's favor so I didn't really concern myself with it too much. I never looked into it specifically, but I figure it's a timing issue... Jr is made "invincible" for a moment when he tosses the shell (ironically because I didn't want him to hit himself) but I guess there's circumstances where the shell is present when his invincibility is removed. - World 7 was definitely THE passion project of the whole show. The reverse gravity thing was started very early as one of my most important priority items. It was also the most complex thing to implement since it needed to greatly upgrade a lot of SMB3's world collision code. Also, including the Mario 3 Giant World stuff does go back to the Supermassive Galaxy in SMG2, but technically I was 7 worlds into development and realized that by chance the Giant World "theme" code had remained largely untouched, so I figured I'd just go ahead and use it for fun. - That Bowser glitch with the fireballs -- never saw that one before! - Keeping the difficulty overall sane was definitely a design goal. I completely agree that a lot of Mario hacks fall to the "Kaizo" route, or at least trend that direction. Assuming the goal of the creator was not just to make another "Kaizo", I think it's a mix of the hack creator being too experienced and making levels "easy for themselves", or otherwise just a poor grasp of game design. In any case, my favorite Mario games are ones that I can mostly sit back and enjoy without being overly frustrated, so I wanted 3Mix to be the same. - There wasn't really meant to be an overarching story because this was more like a "showcase." The game is a technical piece, not really trying to play with Mario lore particularly. As such it's a really weak thread at best... it's sort of like each World briefly summarizes the game it came from but there's a tiny bit of alternate timeline stuff going on via Bowser Jr. But anyway, I respect that you would've wanted that sort of loose story (and in all fairness most Mario games do generally have at least a really basic story throughout), so I'll definitely keep that in mind if I ever try something else in Mario. - As for the levels note, since I too like Mario games to be casual experiences, I can see where going a bit offbeat might've been frustrating. I think it's probably because the simplistic nature of SMB3's level design (and likely of most 2D Mario platformers) is usually pretty linear, which for some of the more complex games I was trying to represent didn't necessarily translate the same. But nonetheless, there are some levels that even I am not happy with because of their quirks or complexity, so it's definitely not perfect. Anyway, glad you overall enjoyed it. As for the bar being set, the creator of Mario Adventure took my source and started upgrading it for their own use and put out some pretty impressive demo videos. I'm not sure if anything will ultimately come of it, but the bar can definitely raise higher if folks are inspired and capable enough. Honestly I hope to see it someday.
Thanks a million Southbird for clearing up the few things I didn't fully understand about your game. I've read most everything I could find that you've said publicly about the game, and I really find it fascinating - especially the behind-the-scenes stuff. It's evident that there was real passion and dedication behind this game. My mind was blown to shreds repeatedly. Thanks so much for the many hours of enjoyment I've had with your game both before and after this video!
Genuinely impressive work on this ROM hack, Captain, I've only just heard about this from subbing to killgruz recently. This would be pretty cool to have on a repro cart with battery back-up. :)
Congratulation for your efforts ! Right now, I'm considering buying a cartridge, I've heard about glitches in this video and in another one by Mike Matei. Is all been corrected ?! Thank you for answering! :)
The serious show-stopper Mike Matei hit was fixed in Rev 1 I think. Rev 2B was the last one I made before I stopped updating. There's not a lot of super serious stuff left that I'm aware of. However, I'm not sure if any carts are being sold with 2B or not.
Definitely, but I have to wonder if an actual NES console would be able to handle it. There is so much in SMB3 Mix that would push the processor to the limit.
Pretty darn interesting. I don't really follow Rom Hack projects, but seeing that the author of this one went that far into tearing Mario 3 apart for it? Totally worth some props there. Nice look at this one all up!
I played it through with my real nes and also my analogue mini nt noir a few times each. Never had any game breaking glitches happen although some mechanics can be a little wonky at times. Overall, I really dig what the guy was able to do with this one. One of the rare few rom hacks I have played through multiple times.
I played through it about ten years ago on an emulator and remember being awestruck by it. I own a flash cart and decided to give it another play through on an actual NES. It’s even more incredible than I remembered. So cool playing such a complex hack on actual hardware too.
Some of the levels have more than one exit. The pink comets have you collect a certain amount of pink coins, and the red comets require you to beat the stage as Small Mario, with all powerups removed. You get an additional Star Coin for doing this. In fact, you can't access World 0 proper until you do this. The levels in World 0 that you access through pipes are also required, because you have to get the keys in order to properly progress through the Zero World. Only then, do you reach the final castle.
Each world having unique sub-bosses and main bosses.. reminds me of Sonic! And that thing in the desert world with the sand filling the room, the gravity reversal... I think the creator is a fan of S&K!
Wait... Southbird made this?! The guy who did the Tomodachi Life vinesauce compilations that were amazing?! That makes me want (NEED) to play this even more.
I just ordered this from AliExpress because I really wanna play it on my AVS, but I don’t have an Everdrive. Really looking forward to experiencing this for the first time!
Love the style as usual. A more regular romhack segment would be super cool! I've had a lot of fun searching for romhacks of games myself, but if there was a regular series that people could watch, I'd go so far as to say it might spark more mainstream interest in the romhacking scene! Things like Hyper Metroid, or maybe even a week looking at Super Mario Bros. X and some levels created in it would be really cool. Just some stuff off the top of my head. Keep it up!
5:56 Actually, they’re called Reznors, after the musician of the same name who passed away a while back. Apparently somebody at Nintendo was a big fan of NIN, just sayin’. 😜
A bit of trivia about the Blocks in World 6 from Super Mario Land 2, they were based on Nintendo toy blocks created back in 1968 called N&B blocks in an effort to compete with Lego.
Oh yeah! I actually did know that! Totally slipped my mind though until your comment. NIN is one of my favorite bands so I always thought the name was cool!
The level with the LEGO bricks in Super Mario Land 2 is a nod to Nintendo's own history. Among their many other business ventures, they were a toy company before becoming the big video game company they are now.
I went back and collected everything 100%, the true boss in World 9 is a Magician guy or something, then you get the true ending. ^_^ but you do need ta collect all the comet stage coins first.
Outsider looking in: It looks like he has reverse engineered the script from all the Mario games mentioned before the N64, done an extremely good job of figuring out exactly how they work and then some how made them Cohesive (unless Mario world is just beefed up engine of previous games) The sprites from the castle world were mad possible by stealing the Art from it's original, down scaling the colour for Nes and then using them accordingly, you don't have rom chips to construe you on space so the art could be possible on nes as long as the pixel size and colour were lessened, This is all guessing from watching other people do rom hacks and make original games.
In the 90’s my brother did make jokes about new worlds in mario along with yoshi in it ,he said you needed a gamegenie 2 to do that, and i was mind blown away while another friend of mine told me about an unlockible supermarioworld game in mario 3 perspective once you did put in the right gamegenie codes, but sadly it turned out to be just a wishfull thinking, but still i had my wishfull thinkings too I remember how i changed those world codes from mario 3 in a hope to get to an unexisting world, but then i got stack in those unexisting world such as world 0 & 9 but still , i wanted to believe that mario 3 contained 32 worlds with all originated mario games in it in mario 3 perspective. Thank you for the information. Are you working on a new hack or homebrew these days ?
If this were released in the 80's. It would've blown people's minds probably even more.
Definitely, but I have to wonder if an actual NES console would be able to handle it. There is so much in SMB3 Mix that would push the processor to the limit.
@@shadow_axplaying it on a NES flash cart right now. The actual hardware can 100% handle it.
This looks pretty great, but it makes me want a SMB3 hack that adds Yoshi to the original SMB3. That would be pretty sweet.
7:14 So, this game includes elements from Sonic & Knuckles as well. Now THAT'S impressive for an NES game.
Pretty darn interesting. I don't really follow Rom Hack projects, but seeing that the author of this one went that far into tearing Mario 3 apart for it? Totally worth some props there. Nice look at this one all up!
Thanks man, yeah I cannot imagine the amount of work that was put into this game. It's pretty amazing and I'm glad it exists!
I played it through with my real nes and also my analogue mini nt noir a few times each. Never had any game breaking glitches happen although some mechanics can be a little wonky at times. Just bought a copy of this from Ebay, can’t wait to play it. Thanks for the review!

Wait...
Southbird made this?!
The guy who did the Tomodachi Life vinesauce compilations that were amazing?!

In the Super Mario Sunshine world, I recognize the towns--they were graphics from Battle of Olympus, if I'm not mistaken.
I just ordered this from AliExpress because I really wanna play it on my AVS, but I don’t have an Everdrive. Really looking forward to experiencing this for the first time!

Great ideas, I'll look into it. Thanks!
Super Mario Bros x is by far my favorite mario fan game. A good map pack is super talking time bros
Bout time you made a video, man! Love all your stuff!
Thank you KillGruz.
If not your "Top 10 SMB3 Romhacks" video I wouldnt even know about this Romhack.
This video is actually my favorite from this channel as well as the top 10 Mario 3 hacks!
killgruz I cant believe you're back
8:27 those bricks are a wink back at the old Nintendo (used to produce playing bricks like Lego as well)
5:56 Actually, they’re called Reznors, after the musician of the same name who passed away a while back. Apparently somebody at Nintendo was a big fan of NIN, just sayin’. 😜

Looks like a great game. I will surely be checking this out at some point in the near future! Thanks for the detailed and honest video! 👍🏻
Just ordered a physical. Can't wait to play it.
This literally one of the best nes hacks I've ever played
I agree. This game is so impressive. It feels like an official Nintendo game.
I wonder how many people would buy this if it was a cartridge game for the NES rather then having to use a emulator. :)
Yoshimaster 9001 a lot... A lot......
Yoshimaster 9001 It actually IS a cartridge and is made for the main NES. Issues generally revolve around certain emulators players use.
I played this through on the NES PowerPak on my console, works flawlessly. Definitely a good challenge!
I prefer emulator‚ it's smoother and there's tools.
Yoshimaster 9001 it is a cartridge...
thanks for the link this game looks very cool and i would have never heard of it if it wasnt for you
HEY! Those 'Dinos' are called Reznor, after Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.... C'mon!
Oh yeah! I actually did know that! Totally slipped my mind though until your comment. NIN is one of my favorite bands so I always thought the name was cool!
Great videos, as always. :)
GAYMEBOY!!
Good to see more action after a long time!
Don't know this, or many other hacked titles, and I am so glad I know about it. It looks like an official Mario game! Definitely playing this ASAP
4:59 I had a similar issue, but it had to do with entering Toad houses; probably because I patched the European ROM instead of the American ROM.
I love these types of game reviews, even if its from a youtube i didnt know about! (i knew about you)
Cool discovery: Press Start 2 times, then press A multiple times, you're in the debug mode!
Seriously?
Is like sonic game debug modes
I really like this game! There is many new content. Played already through this game.
The level with the LEGO bricks in Super Mario Land 2 is a nod to Nintendo's own history. Among their many other business ventures, they were a toy company before becoming the big video game company they are now.
Finally someone else who drew levels on paper! ;)
As far as hacks topping this one, the guy who did Mario Adventure is working on a new hack and it has a ton of neat features so far.
I've been keeping an eye on the new DahrkDaiz project. That new ninja Mario suit looks so cool!
Nice hack :D!
Great to see ya again btw
Wow, I didn't know that Soot Berrd made a really good Mario rom hack. He makes rom hacks, makes godly edits of Vinesuace, what can't he do?
Those Kirby UFOs were from Super Mario Galaxy as well.
Resourced the whole game.. dang.. got to try that then !
It's cool that you can almost forget that it's an SMB3 rom hack, so many new features!
Miyamoto: we couldn't make yoshi in the nes
cpt.southbird: *_Lets get creative!_*
Nope, new news to me. Glad you made this video!
i would watch anything of the stuff you do :D
I went back and collected everything 100%, the true boss in World 9 is a Magician guy or something, then you get the true ending. ^_^ but you do need ta collect all the comet stage coins first.

Que emulador usas? Te recomiendo Mesen, además puedes hacer overclock y jugarlo sin ralentizaciones
the ghost house graphics are taken from a port of smw
In the 90’s my brother did make jokes about new worlds in mario along with yoshi in it ,he said you needed a gamegenie 2 to do that, and i was mind blown away while another friend of mine told me about an unlockible supermarioworld game in mario 3 perspective once you did put in the right gamegenie codes,

You need to patch a Super Mario 3 ROM file with the IPS file. This site has a tutorial: fantasyanime.com/patching
Thanks I found a pre patched ROM
What is so hard about jumping over King Totomasu?
Wasnt Captain Southbird that guy who did Vinny Tomodachi Life highlights? Yeah it is
Here is the fun fact for the Lego(TM) bricks: Those were made by Gunpei Yokoi (Nintendo worker famous for Gameboy and the original Mario Land) to compete against Lego.
1:45
Nude power-ups?!
SIGN ME UP lol
I'm running this on an original nes in an ever drive. So far no glitches for except some slow down due to multiple spirits. Haven't got to the penguin freezing glitch yet though.
Brad Richardson
Same here.
Hardware FTW.
Did you know that Yoshi was actually suppose to be in SMB3? The NES technology at the time couldn't handle making the mechanic work like the devs wanted so they pushed him to the back burner until SMW.
Bathaniel Nandy needs to do a gameplay video of this romhack.
Captain Southbird. The true Hero.
Not like vinny..
12:38 I think some of those graphics are taken from Super Mario World NES Bootleg
Freaking awesome, I need to try this!!
I enjoy hacks but I haven't been blown away by a hack like SMB 3Mix since Metroid: Rogue Dawn.
just found you on UA-cam and like your videos
Fun fact from world 3 ghost in the map
The freaking boos dance to the music!
You should take a look at Extra Mario Brothers. It's a Metroidvania made with SMB1.
In the beginning of the video, where is the music from? Pokemon?
@8:23
You mean Chuckster!
I'm a younger person but I think I can do it with save states just like what I did with the other hack of Super Mario Bros DS called newer Super Mario Bros DS I'll just try to try to inject it into a Wii U Virtual Console game
i dont think Mario 1 remake on 3's engine would be boring. I can't play the first game anymore, the controls feel so bad after playing 3 and smw
I’m the opposite, I like the first Mario’s controls better than others. Takes me a bit to get used to how slippery they feel. Even Mario Maker’s SMB1 feels slippery to me!
I can't get this ROM hack to get it to work on my Samsung Galaxy S6. Please help me
They should've added the Item Storage mechanic from Mario Adventure. And try to patch out some glitches. Then this hack would be golden. ☺
lol that top thing was topman from super mario galaxy 1 on buoy base galaxy. and those little alien things from kirby are just a smaller form of him lol
Hello Sr. I was wondering. If you could talk about SMB3 hack called "Kawa Mario Bros 3". I hope you will be able to do it. Regards and thanks in advance,
would anyone happen to know how to reset the mushroom houses in this game i feel like the power ups would be way to scarce if you couldn't
Ohh man i loved playing Super Mario Land on My Gayboy! Good times...
...from SBL2 for the GAY BOY!
later...
says game boy...
(in background: **gaayyyeeemmmee boooiiieeeee**)
I'm wondering now: You know Vinesauce?
I don't really watch any live streams. Seems pretty popular tho
It's just that the guy who made this hack is the same guy who montages most of videos for Vinesauce...
Yeah, Southbird is a pretty respected member of the Vinesauce community and does edit a lot of videos for him.
Maroon comets:get to the end of the level
Purple comets:collect all purple coins
The boss is called Reznoir and it's four Triceratops on a spinning wheel
Why couldn't Princess Peach be playable in this? It'll be cool if it had her as a playable character in this.
Can somebody please tell me how to get to the center of Star road and those other stages?
Does anyone know a good emulator to play hacks like these? I've tried both Nestopia and Mesen, but none of them can actually load the ROM.
I hope one day Nintendo will release SMB 4 for NES
Have you found the secret CASINO in World 6-4?
they should've made a super mario 64 world
It's been like 6 fucking years since you made a video about Mario.
Yeah Nintendo has been copyright claiming Mario videos and shutting down channels for it. I think I found a way around it though.
Ahhh this looks great. Does anyone know if this runs on original hardware with a flash cart?
Whats the best emulator to use? I got a little slowdown.
Welcome to my channel. I have a lot of Mario games
I assume this is the Minus Infinity of Mario 3 Romhacks.
*sees ROM hack itself*
Oh hey I know this one!
*Sees it was made by Southbird*
WHOA WAIT REALLY?!?
I'm probably the only one who reacted like that.
Cool video thanks!
Bowser Jr. Got Suicidal Because He Ain't Got No Iphone.
I 100% this game...twice...before watching this vid!
I just want a mario hack with every single enemy and boss from mario 1-3 lost levels and world.
Honestly it just needs some bugs to be buffed out, and this could very well be the best NES game ever made
i heard hidden gaaaame boiii in the backround XD
Sorry guys. Quick question. Is this game made on a PC or an actual hacked version of the cartridge?
Late as shit, but it's a real hack.
what version did you use
hmm...kind of makes me wonder - does game genie work on this hack??
