I've seen so many reactions of this and I love when people who understand music see Chad jump in and their eyes light up, knowing how impressive it is.
When you are good enough that Flea and Frusciante are your jamming partners… Smith is, without a bit of exaggeration, among the best drummers to ever play.
The fact that he didn’t listen to the entire song the first time and take notes speaks volumes to his talent and ability. He started playing almost immediately when everyone else would have been listening through the first time. Didn’t even take a second take on it. If he had he would have even shredded it more. The man is a master.
First off, like your reaction cos you didn`t stop every second and just enjoyed the show. Secondly, Chad it seems is a top musician. I knew he was but that high of a class... Damn he blew me off... The guy is a legend.
The fact that he changes his beat immediately after listening to the vocal, guitar, and bass cues to match what was going on is always astounding to me. @03:35
What amazes me is that he jumped in on the first play thru and started after the drum intro, mid beat, still in pace with the track. I find that incredible.
I love this song and 30 to mars and when i first seen this on drumeo my jaw was on the ground 😮. This was utterly mind blowing how he just sent it 💯 and FUCKING nailed it.
3:403:54 You can see on his face that he is finding his way on his head. Those are the things that makes you realize that he really didn't know the song (like a lot of people are saying).
@4:20 I think his stick breaking gave the song a nice breath❤with the bass drum coming through more. It really prepped and reinforced the lead singer’s climax; pounding home the point. 🥁🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🎸🎧
Yours was the first reaction to this I've watched. I watched a few others since then and you "He's going for it!" is still the best spontaneous reaction I 've seen yet. 1:49
I just scrolled through your entire “drummer reacts” playlist, how have you not reacted to Dirk Verbeuren (Megadeth) hearing “Mr. Brightside” for the first time?? It’s soooo good!
I feel like Chads really been underrated in the world of primo drummers! Unless you're a RHCP fan (i am) you probs wouldnt take much notice. Like with Grohl, even back into Nirvana back in the day, you took notice whether you liked them or not (i adore them still) & others, but yeah... im glad Chad did this challenge to show'em whats what😅 age means nothing its about skill, wisdom, experience! Imho🎉
I agree, the fact he jumped into during the first listen and melted with the song plus with his improvising skills is amazing PD: Please react to drummer Chris Turner from Oceans Ate Alaska song: Benzaiten (drums playthrough)
Amazing job by Chad. It does have to be said though that he's spent his career jamming along to things made up on the spot and The Kill is a much easier song than some of them get given on these challenges. He absolutely nailed it though.
I thought I missed part of the video, but he just started going buck wild on that song. Just rewatched Larnel too. Freaking amazing talent we all wish we had just a glimmer. Wish I could have been there live.
Honestly, A lot of his practice is performing live since RHCP improvises so much. Developing different kinds of fills and adapting to different styles is something he does best. That entire band nails it
You can see at 1:55 throws in a fill. Thats pretty impressive with someone whos never heard the song before and is just a couple of seconds in. That´s take BALLS to throw in a fill.
You can see where at certain times he pauses for a split second to either see where the transition is going or to change his beat based off of the change
I'm honestly quite surprised, that so many drummers/musicians are surprised by Chad being intuitive, listening and anticipating, like it's some kind of unique unicorn skill. It's literally the BASIC REQUIREMENT from ANY musician (well, maybe not the orchestra guys) that respects themselves. If a musician can't listen, anticipate or improvise it's a HUGE flaw, that needs to be worked on asap. Lacking those skills makes musicians hard to work with and even harder to create with.
my favorite thing is that chad didnt even listen to the song prior without drums nor had heard it before. he just dove in head first and killed it first take
I've watched your reaction video to Sugarfoot before, and that take on Linkin Park is such an amazing blind take on a song. He starts off even earlier than Chad. Chad did a fantastic job w/the song for sure.
You know if you get drafted to NFL your one of the best. Then after you get there you kick everyone's ass and are amongst the top 15 players on the planet. That's Chad
Can I just say thank you for not ever stopping it? Reactors and people who do this kida video have the absolute TERRIBLE habit of stopping videos to just give an opinion which I'd rather get afterwards. Let me see you REACT.
This! I mean I don’t mind one or two stops but it’s the ones that stop every 15 seconds and then knock the song back 10 seconds when they finish speaking!! 🤬🤬
Im not religious but I believe that some people just operate on a spiritual level..above themselves..out of their body open to the universe..in tune with the creator..Chad is one of them..its pure love actually
My cheeks hurt for minutes after watching that video! I was completely blown away that he absolutely nailed it a few seconds in without knowing that song at all
I've seen the original video 3 times and now 2 different reaction videos. It blows my mind every time. With just a couple exceptions where he doesn't know precisely where the song is going, he's playing it as I would expect on an album. Even then, he picks is up quickly and adjusts. Honestly, I like his interpretation better than the original. The original uses the snare too much, IMO.
As someone who doesn't understand a wet fart's worth about making music, what impresses me about Chad's absolutely Chad take on this song is how he picks up the energy of the song in what, 10-15 seconds and then just goes in full blast with complete confidence with his own take. No steps back, he just sends it and it might as well be the drum track for the actual song.
That's because he is used to jamming with his band members and coming up with new beats just in the spot and he also is a session drummer for other artists so he is also used to listening to plenty of drumless tracks so he can come up with his take.
I’d like to know what makes you think the time signature for this song is 6/8 vs 3/4? From a drummer’s perspective, there’s no practical difference. You can’t “hear “ the difference and it most certainly will not change anything with how the song is played.
It depends on how everyone hears it to be fair. 3/4 has 3 strong beats and 6/8 has 2 strong beats which lead me to hear it as 6/8 due to the pattern. Also some drummers like to double either a bpm or time signature depending on playing style. Playing to a metronome at 40bpm is a lot harder than 80bpm etc.
Like ... HOW DID HE KNOW WHAT TO PLAY. He naturally, just knew what sounded right and played it. Like he was coloring in a picture of Mickey mouse and knew what colors he was using.
I really like it when the drummer comes in aggressively in the song, Chad is the leader in this but there is another one that I liked listening to which was Joey Jordison, even though he said he preferred guitar, he was among the best on drums and made art when he played , I miss #1 who wrote poetry on the drums
What’s hilarious about this and kind of ironic is Chad jumped in THIRTY SECONDS INTO THE SONG lmao. That’s what blows my mind too because it’s so inconsequential too
Thanks for watching!

i have watched this video probably a dozen times in the last couple days... the sheer level of his skill is astounding
Yo it's fucking unreal. Chad CRUSHES his!!!
Totally with you. I was astounded.
Same 😂
Like just nails it
Same! lol
I've seen so many reactions of this and I love when people who understand music see Chad jump in and their eyes light up, knowing how impressive it is.
Me too, it's amazing when someone recognizes.
When you are good enough that Flea and Frusciante are your jamming partners…

Such monstrous power at his age and such accuracy.
I saw RHCP live last year and fron the other footage of Chad I've seen on tour I truly think he's drumming better and harder than ever.
The fact that he didn’t listen to the entire song the first time and take notes speaks volumes to his talent and ability. He started playing almost immediately when everyone else would have been listening through the first time. Didn’t even take a second take on it. If he had he would have even shredded it more. You're not alone, Jason. Everyone who witnessed Chad's rendition on that Drumeo video was utterly blown away.
Mind blowing, I’ve watched this over and over since last week …If your a drummer you appreciate this in another way ..
If you're any kind of a musician, you can be anything but in awe of what's happening here mate...
Mind is blown. Immediately had it.
I’ve watched this 6 times since last night!
Chad is an amazing jam drummer with huge music knowledge, but I still had no idea he would basically nail this. What a genius
First off, like your reaction cos you didn`t stop every second and just enjoyed the show. Secondly, Chad it seems is a top musician. I knew he was but that high of a class... Damn he blew me off... The guy is a legend.
Every once in a while you see something like this where a high level professional gives you a glimpse at the mind blowing talent some of them have.
This guy is a phenomenal MUSICIAN. His ability to read and understand the song and ad lib a fairly complex performance is mindboggling.
The fact that he changes his beat immediately after listening to the vocal, guitar, and bass cues to match what was going on is always astounding to me. @03:35
It makes perfect sense to do that
First time I saw this, my jaw dropped. His level of skill is amazing!!! Nailed it!
This Guy is skyrocketing on youtube everywhere
Chad's main lesson is to approach any part with intent and commitment.
It's so wild because he didn't even listen all the way thru and improvised on the spot.
What amazes me is that he jumped in on the first play thru and started after the drum intro, mid beat, still in pace with the track. I find that incredible.
The goal is to let them listen to the track completely through, he said "fuck it, I got this."
@@fillosopher7 Yes sirrrrr!

It takes years of jamming to reach this kind of level....I love Chad!❤Nice reaction though ! 🙂
The Kill is the best track that TStM has to offer and off the top of his head Chad Smith makes that track 100 times better. Absolutely amazing!
This dude thinks in notes and beats-incredible ear.
There's a reason his name is Chad lol

Yes! So glad when you said you think it's in 6/8! My man

I can't wait to buy the remix of The Kill with Chad's drums on it. :) First hear, first pass and it's better. F'n god tier drumming.

Not really. If you’re a drummer and know the count and the chorus you can find out where the holes are. Unless the song does something unpredictable
You can see where at certain times he pauses for a split second to either see where the transition is going or to change his beat based off of the change
Love how he went a little nuts at the end 😂
i can FEEL his thought process lol
It’s a level of talent that I would imagine compares to Mozart. An instinctual ability. Amazing!
He made this song his own
This is crazy! That build he did at 2:33 is not in the original, but it sounded better! In my opinion anyways. Nicely done!
