Drumeo has a ton of these, and they’re all great. Most other drummers listen to it once or twice and take notes though. Him jumping in after a few seconds is insane. He basically improv’d the drums in real time.
This is the one that is really different. Most drummers listen to the song a few times and take notes before they try it. Chad Smith just jumped in on the first go. It's incredible
I think most drummers just listen once... But yeah, he did jump in right away and nailed it. This isn't a complex song though, the song structure is really standard pop, still very impressive of course...
@Kholdaimon they usually give it one listen to learn the structure. And they'll playthrough once or twice. I was very impressed with the pop girl that tried slipknot. She did very well, for missing half the drum kit, and only using one pedal. You could see it really challenged her cause her first playthrough she was very restrained, and then on the last one she just let it loose. That why i like the drums more than other instruments. You can change things on drums and it works. You can't really do that with other instruments. You can't just add things, cause it doesn't fit, but with drums you can do a little here and there and it doesn't change anything except fill an empty space.
To be fair to Chad, I'd never heard the song before I watched the Drumeo video either, but I don't listen to the radio or visit the Walmart music department. Now I would throw gobs of money at the person who gets me a clean recording of 'The Kill' with Chad's drumline. No offence intended to Shannon, who is a sick drummer in his own right, but this take was fire.
The Drumeo video with Dirk Verbeuren from Megadeath drumming to Mr. Brightside by the Killers is a really good one. He has a much more emotional take on the song in my opinion. He drums much slower than the original song and really changes the whole vibe. Also Will Ferrell and Chad Smith did a drum off on the tonight show with Jimmy Fallon. You may find that entertaining.
My dude has been a chart topping and iconic rock drummer across 5 decades now. I have no difficulty believing he can actively listen to just about any radio friendly rock band and not only jam along but leave the original drummer wondering why they didn't think of that shit.
The reason the original drummers don't think about it, is because they were trying to be a mainstream chart topping drummer. There's plenty of RHCP songs that you could add stuff to as a drummer. But doing things like that isn't something you think of when writing a song, that's part of the hindsight, of "man it would have been cooler if i did this." When you write the song you're just trying to make it work, and most artists don't listen to their own music, and once it's out you can't change it.
I started off almost 30 years ago on the drums. Moved to lead guitar shortly after simply because we couldn't find any. For next 30 years, I was a guitarist. After watching this video, I have pulled out the ole set and started banging on them skins again. Truly inspiring performance by a seasoned vet.
Drumeo is a teaching channel at its heart and offers a huge catalogue of lessons as well as instructor-led live online lessons weekly. They have famous drummers come in and do lessons (Travis Barker did one on his favourite rudiments for instance) as well as record some other things with them while they have them in the studio such as what you just watched.
I can’t stop watching reaction videos to this. This man is ridiculous on these drums and I’m not even a chili pepper fan. This guy is a ridiculous beast.
Man you mirrored the thoughts that I've had in my head for many years. Learning acoustic guitar, the beach and bonfire scenario for sure but there's something about being a drummer that is so bad ass. Being able to do drum like that would be cool as hell.
I really enjoyed the Slipknot video with Domino Santantonio too. She is more of a pop drummer but her 3rd take on the Slipknot song was amazing. She totally nailed the attitude and amplitude of a metal drummer. Also loved the Grayson Nekrutman version of the Sleep Token song. He KILLS the double bass.
This is my favorite drumeo series. Most of the other drummers will listen one time through and write notes, and it's still really good. But Chad is a beast because he listened for like 10 seconds and just freestyles it incredibly well.
I love drummers, have no idea about the technicality of it since I am not one, but what I noticed at around 7:10 was that Chad, in like a fraction if a second, changed what he was going to do based on the what he was hearing. No matter what you do that is just straight talent.
I really feel that's where you can hear that he is reacting in realtime. He's split-second changing when he hears the clues. So he misses the solo but catches the vibe immediately, and again as you said at 7:10, then the final run it's the same.
The way you talk about wanting to take a guitar to the beach and just play it is the same way that I've felt as a guitar player wanting to play drums well. I've played guitar for 20 years but my favorite musician of all time is a drummer. Of all the reactions to this video yours is my favorite. Thanks for your insight.
I’ve seen tons of reactions to this video… allow me to say THANK YOU. This is by far my favorite one. So genuine, excited, payed attention to the video a properly, awesome energy… damn it, what can I say. Your video really made my night, sir. Appreciate it!!!
Nothing better than going back after a month or so and watching the new reactors who have just now caught up. This is still the most epic video on UA-cam this year! Great reaction to by the way. I love it
The more of these you watch, the more amazed you'll become with this one. Although it's hard to imagine he's never heard it. But even smoking he's heard it a few times, it's still incredibly impressive. I wish he did play one more time though as that by far would be the best version of that song ever played.
Awesome reaction video, CaveMan!! I have watched a ton of these for Chad's rendition of The Kill and this one is right at the top. Also, awesome t-shirt! Fathers Matter absolutely!!!
New subscriber! Loved your reaction man. Chad pulls slightly back and though we don’t hear it he is following the bass line to anticipate… but he pulls slightly back at each section then just goes in 1000% for “the kill” (had to do it 😂). Larnell Lewis is one you have to check out. He’s a jazz fusion drummer and he did Enter Sandman. I really believed Larnell hadn’t heard it before because he’s a jazz fusion drummer but more so he was raised in church with gospel/church music. Dude even turned down a tour offer from Drake after reading the material and disagreeing with the lyrics. You could see how completely different of a process he has vs say Chad Smith. And Jonathan “Sugarfoot” Moffett who drummed live for MJ from 83 til his death. Michael, the ever perfectionist, said “everyone makes mistakes live.. I make mistakes, the guitar makes mistakes, but not Sugarfoot!”… he’s more accurate than a goddamn metronome 😂. Madonna postponed her tour at the height of her fame for an entire year to get him to drum for her tour. Elton John had him too. He’s incredibly on point and you should check out any of the songs like Jam or Thriller on Drumeo.
Do you know who el estepario siberiano is? I'm not quite sure who you're talking about but I would bet my left knot they don't even come close to touching this man's talent and precision....
GREAT reaction, if you already haven't I would strongly recommend watching the full interview with Chad. The time signature is pretty simple (a waltz is in 3's) so you had to figure he was gonna nail it, the only times that he went off course was in the first bridge he overshot a little but then dropped right back in and then at the end where he just went for it before dropping to the high-hat and the rim. I'd never heard the original but when I did listen to it I liked what Chad's fills did for the song. Again, LOVED the reaction, definitely subscribing!
Love him rockin the Judas Priest shirt! 🙌 If only I’d saved mine from back in the day. He kills this. One song that has has remained on my playlist for years. Great reaction.
I love this. You can always tell when the person reacting is actually a drummer or not. The stuff that you get excited about screams, “I’m a drummer” lol.
What makes this especially impressive for me is that he is demonstrating how to go in blind. There are so many times that he does things that allow him to stay in control so that he can change when he needs to. And go full in once he understands what’s happening. One example is the ending where he switches to high control where he could stop the second the song stops. He’s like a race car driver on an unknown track: he knows when he can go wild and he knows how to adjust when he’s about to go off the track
Unlike some of the other, amazing performances on this channel where they at least have one chance if not more to understand the part that they’re playing to support
Para mí existen personas que ya sea por estudios o por conectarse con la música a otro nivel como músicos que son pueden saber que ritmo y que arreglo lleva una canción, muy buena tu reacción, suerte con tu canal.
I've watched a ton of reactions to this video but yours is my favorite!! Had to like/subscribe immediately! Wishing you continued success with your channel 👍👍
Watching this video (a few weeks ago) was the first time I heard this song, so not surprising Chad also hadn't heard it. BTW, the song rocks. Was very surprised. 👍🏼
I cant pat my head and rub my belly at the same time. But this guy can play drums with his right hand, look down grab another stick and smoothly continue playing after breaking a drum stick. It took me 4 times watching to even notice it
I highly suggest watching the Drumeo videos of Jess Bowen playing Rage Against the Machine and Nandi Bushell playing Twisted Sister. My favorite thing about these Drumeo videos is that every summer approaches this differently.
I can't remember her name off the top of my head but you gotta watch the Italian drummer they have do this. She's a pop drummer and she's done a couple metal songs and she nails them as well
Will Ferrell & Chad have done stuff together like a drum-off against each other on Jimmy Fallon (The Tonight Show) which is probably somewhere on UA-cam.
No way really? Can will Drum or is it a joke.. if he has some skill that might be the most fun thing I could see. Chad makes similar faces or facial expressions that remind me of Will.. it's such a trip I'll watch that video and react to it at the same time for sure. Thanks for the comment and the suggestion
Larnell Lewis playing Enter Sandman is a good one…there’s one with a funk drummer (can’t think of his name at the moment) playing Tool…the Drumeo channel is fantastic.
There's also another Chad Smith video where he does drums for a song by Dua Lipa- he did the original drums for that song but he kinda freestyles it in the drumeo video and it sounds waaaay better than the original song. Helps that the drums volume is cranked up in these vids. Really pumps you up
will pharrell and chad smith actually were in a late night show together (dont know which one, but its easily findable here on youtube), dressed the same and it was kinda hard to tell them apart at first. and they had a drum off ;D
Good shirt.. fathers DO matter This is a great concept. If you watch more of these it is very enlightening how different drummers handle this challenge
There is so much power in each idk how to call it so i'll use "hit", there is so much power in each one of his "hits" it's insane and beauitful. It's diffrent from other "covers" it's like he is giving his soul in each move from his hands
I don't have the knowledge Chad Smith, and not claiming to, but I listen to a LOT of rock and grew up with it, so have been listening to it for well over 50 years. I love finding new artists and lately have been listening to this kid Shakey Graves. Anyway, I find it totally believable that Chad never heard this song before because I never heard it before. I think he's just an amazing drummer and talent.
I saw this video of chad the other day and had much the same reaction as you. I love 30stm and would love to see chad take the exact same shot on From Yesterday. Last night as a matter of fact I decided to take a look at some of the other drumeo videos and found none of them that were like this. I don’t mean to take away from any of the amazing talent of the other drummers, but I don’t think any of them smashed their songs like chad did, and chad was certainly the only drummer that started drumming along within 30 seconds of the intro to the song. Chads version is obviously a fair bit bit different than the original, but he nailed the count and the passion was just the same. If you had never heard the original drum track to The Kill, you’d have no reason to believe that chads cover wasn’t the original. I have always love the chili peppers, and known chad was an exceptional drummer, and I LOVE 30stm, and The Kill, to get this random mash up of the two, floored me much the same it did you.
I can barely play an acoustic guitar yet i have an endless list of friends who play instruments. For years, we have had debates about the best top 10 drummers and everyone had Chad Smith in their list. Personally, i a connoisseur of music that has learnt a fuck load through friends and observation. If you watch carefully, he works out the beat aka 3/4 but also listens to the the bass and guitar for queues. The big thing that most people miss, he is playing catch up like no one else. DUDE.... Chad just played his heart out without knowing shit about the original drum track. Absolute freak. Abe Cunningham from Deftones is on the same level.
What’s really interesting about this one… when you see other videos on drummeo of drummers playing songs they aren’t familiar with, you’ll notice that all of them listen to the whole track first and take notes on what they might do with it… not Chad. He listened to like 30 seconds and immediately just jumped right in… that alone just shows his skills are next level.
I've been in bands most of my adult life and I promise you you're only as good as your drummer. He has an incredible feel and he knows musicality he knows what's needed for the song and not for him I'm just a lowly bass player but drummers are awesome
this is like the 15th "reaction" video i've watched on this and it never stops being impressive or entertaining.
Thank you for the comment👍😆
Ditto! 😂😂😂
me too lop. wvertime a new one pops up I can't resist lol
Dude that’s what I’m doing right now. Binge watching these Lmao chad is so good!!!
same.....might be at 16 now lol
Drumeo has a ton of these, and they’re all great. Most other drummers listen to it once or twice and take notes though. Him jumping in after a few seconds is insane. He basically improv’d the drums in real time.
Yeah as I like to say, Chad took 30 seconds to listen to 30 Seconds to Mars, and then thrashed like a madman. 🤣
Wow, 45 likes.. I agree with 💯 percent that's what got me so excited. I couldn't believe it.
Well put. This was awesome
Underrated comment.@andriasjabs
Yeah, Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett had a similar experience with Linkin Park. And when he was done, he was done. No second take necessary.
This is the one that is really different. Most drummers listen to the song a few times and take notes before they try it. Chad Smith just jumped in on the first go. It's incredible
Straight🔥
I think most drummers just listen once... But yeah, he did jump in right away and nailed it. This isn't a complex song though, the song structure is really standard pop, still very impressive of course...

Dennis chambers got hoed 😂@Kholdaimon
@@Kholdaimonthat's why he did multiple songs this way. Not all this "straightforward" 😎
Chad Smith is one of the greatest in the pocket, smooth, listening drummers of all time… this man could play with ANY band and make them better
Absolutely 💯
Chad Smith and Will Ferrell did a skit where they had a drum-off. You'd get a laugh out of it. It's hysterical.
I'm going to try to look at that after work tonight. Thanks
ua-cam.com/video/0uBOtQOO70Y/v-deo.html@@CaveManParadigm
thanks for mentioning this @harleysdam4813... I couldn't imagine nobody mentioning that yet lol!
To be fair to Chad, I'd never heard the song before I watched the Drumeo video either, but I don't listen to the radio or visit the Walmart music department. No offence intended to Shannon, who is a sick drummer in his own right, but this take was fire.
Omg yes! I would LOVE a clean version of Chad's drum line. The original is good but Chad's has just so much raw energy, I can't get enough.
Yes Iwith you both👍🔥
Just save it from YT?
clown
same!
The Drumeo video with Dirk Verbeuren from Megadeath drumming to Mr. Brightside by the Killers is a really good one. He has a much more emotional take on the song in my opinion. Yeah his halftime during the verses were great.
Sounds good thank you👍

The drums are the soul of this song.He is so beautiful!!! ❤️
I can’t stop watching reaction videos to this. This man is ridiculous on these drums and I’m not even a chili pepper fan. This guy is a ridiculous beast.
Chad smith the current living goat of drums
I love the part when his stick breaks and he just grabs another one so smoothly without missing a beat.
I noticed that in editing. That was so sick indeed. Thank you
The stick breaking is why drummers tend to have *at least* three pairs of sticks spare in the bag they put on their sets
Man you mirrored the thoughts that I've had in my head for many years. Learning acoustic guitar, the beach and bonfire scenario for sure but there's something about being a drummer that is so bad ass. Being able to do drum like that would be cool as hell.

This is my favorite drumeo series. Most of the other drummers will listen one time through and write notes, and it's still really good. But Chad is a beast because he listened for like 10 seconds and just freestyles it incredibly well.
When you see a master at his or her craft , it is absolute pleasure . I could watch this on repeat and wouldn't get bored.
Dude is a Metronome, a Human being, fucking brutal DRUMMER, it's in his blood.
Music, rhythms, melodies, all at once flowing through his veins.
The drumeo video of Larnell Lewis playing enter sandman is nuts. To have a gospel/jazz drummer play Metallica is something else.
I did that one. It's got Yoda on the thumbnail
@@CaveManParadigm I just watched your video of it. 👍

Haha, first time hearing the song was when i watched that video :D Had to listen the original after. Awesome reaction btw!
He was so good. Masterclass in drumming for sure.
Chad and Will did a drumb-off on late night TV years ago...pretty entertaining (Will can actually chop a bit)

He must be legit many mentions of him. Do you have a specific video you recomend?
Hey just looking up best of Chad Smith drumming and I see your channel so I'll watch a review bro. Super hyped that I saw your channel here.
Apart from being the drummer for RHCP Chad also does a lot of session work, so while amazing, I am not suprised at all he picked it up so fast
Love it, thanks for the comment👍
He did the drum track for "Break My Heart" by Dua Lipa, another tidbit I learned from watching more Drumeo with Chad 😂.
Love him rockin the Judas Priest shirt! 🙌 If only I’d saved mine from back in the day. He kills this. One song that has has remained on my playlist for years. Great reaction.

You definitely get a new perspective for artists for sure
Thank you..
Chad improvised on the fly you can see him figure it out while he's playing.
You should watch the Chad Smith Will Ferrell drum off from the Jimmy Fallon show
By next weekend for sure. That sounds amazing 👏
Amazing comment, 👏
You said it perfect👍 thanks for posting it
Great Video! Pumped!
Thank you
I can barely play an acoustic guitar yet i have an endless list of friends who play instruments.
Thank you for that smart comment, thanks for explaining it to me. You rule dude, thanks for being here for this one. 👍
Before u even hear this. You WILL NOT NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE....love how he is describing how his process is...
Dude I know the song and man I love this part shit was bananas for sure.
GOAT
It's for this reason chad is a GOAT
Chad has been around it all I guess... dude just exudes rock n roll drumming
Chad is the man! Dude is master of his craft. Love me some Red Hot Chili Peppers.
He'll yeah, I agree. Are they making any new music?
He’s been my favorite
I just stumbled onto your channel, great reaction!
Awesome! Thank you!
there's a video of a drum off between Chad Smith and Will Ferrell
Sign me up for that.. thank you
What’s really interesting about this one… when you see other videos on drummeo of drummers playing songs they aren’t familiar with, you’ll notice that all of them listen to the whole track first and take notes on what they might do with it… not Chad.
Cool, that makes sense to me 🤙
I edited it so you might want to read it again just to make sure I appreciate that means a lot thank you@@CaveManParadigm
I thought he was just counting the time signature when it looks like he’s talking
Drumeo is a do all covers all aspects of drumming thingy.. drumeo ='s awesome
I don’t know anything about drumming as in playing it, but it was amazing!
He was awesome! He does a bit with Will Ferrell on Jimmy Fallon, look it up, it was hilarious!
Bro, offtopic, your hair and beard looks fucking amazing. I wanna have that hair and beard
Haha, thanks so much 👍

Thank you, I'll be doing more.
