The fact he just jumped in without hearing a full pass on the song was just nuts, he is improvising at such a fast speed while making it all sound so seamless
If I jump in on a track I've never heard before you can hear the indecisiveness on every hit, but Chad just went "you know what, I might screw this up but if I do It's gonna be at full volume and with confidence".
i know eh? he listened to what, fifteen seconds before jumping in headfirst?
He has to guess where the song is going to change and even though he missed some the number he nailed is frankly stunning.
Professional musicians are amazing
@@Scoots1994 He did mention that he was actively listening to when the song would build up and time his fills to that, so I can understand how he got that timing correct, but understanding his reasoning and understanding how he is capable of having the ability to do it so quickly and seamlessly are not the same thing.
the original video changed my entire perspective of Chad Smith as a drummer, musician and person. He's unbelievably wise at the craft.
I love how he just attacked it
Agree 1000% ... Holding him up there much higher then i used to for sure!
All of rhcp members are insane musicians. Cool aswell. Have no doubt.
Chad hits the snare like it owes him money.
"Some kind of Emo thing" - Chad Smith RHCP. Nailed it confirmed lol
I've watched this Drumeo video about a dozen times since it's come out. Absolutely mindblowing performance. There's so much nuance in the way he both listens and attacks. He balances on that edge so masterfully.
You´re not alone mate. Every night im watching the Drumeo version then keep scrolling for new reactions. totally baffled.
Absolutely!
this is so outstanding, it's so amazing that it is even hard to explain in words 🤣
Ive watched it probably 2 dozen in 2 weeks. Simply astounding. I couldnt probably even make anything that sounded like music
This disease is contagious. I've got it bad. I don't know how many times I've watched it. 😅
i love the fact that Chad was ALL in after like 30 seconds.
🤣🤣👌
Well, he had reached Mars. 🤔
Well, it is 30 seconds to Mars anyway...
This is how you know a drummer knows song structure, if you know music you'll know how the song plays out
Very smart comment
@@AndrewRooneyDrums am I smart drummer I do say so myself 😎, thanks rooney 👍
Yeah. Think that often gets overlooked about this performance. If he was just playing by ear to what he is listening to, he'd not be able to set anything up in advance - which he clearly does. So basically what he has to do is think some seconds in advance about what will be coming up judging from the song structure etc. That can be best noticed close to the end, where he seems to have been expecting something different (less quit ending). On all the other parts however he's mostly correct with what he is assuming to come up.
I think a lot, and I really mean A LOT, of people, me included, just found out that Chad Smith is a god tier drummer.
I've been watching every reaction videos to his performance, just to see the glee in the face of real drummers.
It’s not even just drum channels, lots of rock guitarists jumped on it too. It’s just a masterful demonstration of drumming ability.
Nope. Been my favourite since I started. He has that grove.
Me too.
spot on man I always held Frusciante in high regard in RHCP, but shit me Chad is super special.
@@JesseVin11 every flea fan / bass also knows :)
All the other great drummers in this series listen to the drumless track all the way through at least once. He jumps in after a few seconds and just kills without any idea what's coming next.
Except for sugarfoot. Go check his out
@@Jordan-el5yz I have. I was pretty sure he listened all the way through. I'll have to give it another listen.
@Jordan-el5yz sugarfoot jumped in quick too but his improv wasn't nearly as clean or exciting
@@shadowproductions969 True. Chad Smith is a different breed. But to be fair far more in his ballpark than linkin park was to sugarfoot.
It helps that Chad kinda has a similar style to Shannon so it’s kinda why his improv seemed so seamless imo. Not saying it’s any less impressive, just why I think it came off so clean
I’m not a drummer but my son was. He never played professionally but was in local bands and learned by ear. He just knew what to play. Eventually he got into more of the technical side of things with editing and mastering songs for no pay just to get the word out. Unfortunately he passed away but it was fun to talk with him about music and drums. He fascinated me. I only wish that he had been able to make his music dreams come true. I think he would have been like Chad, just being able to pick up the sticks and play. I love to watch and listen to your assessments of drummers. I may not always understand the technical terms but just to watch drummers play is fascinating to me.
Sorry for your loss. Your strength is amazing and I'm sure it's fueled by the love shared by you and your boy 🙏🏽
Sorry for your loss. You're stronger than most. I don't mean any disrespect, and you don't have to answer me, but how did your son pass?
Not even interested in drums, But there’s something about seeing someone improvise using their talent that just gets me
There’s something captivating about watching someone do something they’re really good at, no matter what it is! I was grinning like an idiot through the whole vid haha
My biggest take from this is that Chad is an incredible listener. I mean, he has years of jamming with Flea as experience. 😍👏🏼
Same. It's an absolute masterclass in listening
Shows the importance of playing and jamming with people. Too many Instagram/UA-cam drummers are obvious they don’t play with other people and only to tracks
Jared Leto's phrasing follows so closely with his brother's drumming that I have to think those powerful vocals clued Chad in to the song's direction and episodic power chords.
Absolutely. I think its in another drumeo video where chad talks about how he likes to follow keidis' voice patterns with his drumming, and I think hes doing the same thing here with leto
Chad bounces both feet pretty much all the time, he's got ghost notes all over the place but it's part of the sound and intentional.
Yes need. Love it
And now you know why he’s a stadium drummer. One of the best!
Yes Sir 💯👌
This is why he’s one of the best. First run through, he easily got it %98 right. Absolutely amazing drumming.
Hey if you’re able to follow Flea and John in your day job, 30 seconds to mars should be seamless. He’s a fucking monster 😂
I'm not trying to sound 'cool', but Chad definitely has that true Cali swagger and approach to life. His confidence enhances his playing just enough to be entertaining and an asset..all without coming across offensive. Once you understand Chad, you're all set! He's one of those dudes that helps keep you calibrated to take risks and to just enjoy life!
Which is amazing since he's from Michigan.
@@barnabydodd8956 Yeah, he's not from Cali originally. But, he's lived there or had houses there for a long time. He lived in Malibu around 2007 or 2008. And, he just recently bought a pad in Brentwood. Thanks for the clarification..
@@barnabydodd8956yup, Detroit suburbs
@@trevordallasLol what, Chad has been in California since 1988.
He’s 62 so after 35 years of living there he’s basically Californian now
He moved to Cali for the Chilli Peppers but Chad and Keidis are both from Michigan. Anthony from the west coast of Michigan, Chad from Bloomfield Hills.
He's amazing, and here's what people don't understand. He didn't listen to "15 seconds" and then do this, he listened to JUST THE SONG WITH NO DRUMS! His entire playing was built on his experience of how he would personally play it. So anything he missed is because he has never heard the song before and had no frame of reference for the drum parts.
Many of the Drumeo clips the guest drummer listens to a complete (or nearly complete) pass of the song. They often make notes and map out verses and chorus, builds and dips and bridges....etc. Chad listened and jumped in playing literally a few bars into the first pass and just improvised in real time. Even though this isn't an especially complicated song, the improvisation is excellent - he did such an amazing job!
Yup. He doesn't follow rules or anyone else HAHA
I love that you link the original video. I think far too many reaction youtubers don't, so it's refreshing to see.
I appreciate that!
Agreed! Came here to make the same comment and it just elevates his credibility by a thousand 😊
The peppers write most of their stuff from a jam, so he's been coming up with beats "instantly" his whole career
I have watched this performance on so many different channels!
Chad's active listening is off the charts!!
The first few bars he played seemed perfect, he deviated from the original after that but it sounded 100% natural and would have worked on the original.
Godlike.
That was killer!
Yup!
This is what it looks like when someone has Mastered there craft. Insane.
"Oh, it's three beat? Easy" *Proceeds to play perfectly almost instantly.* Welp.
The concept created by Drumeo, is truly unique and given me new appreciation for the drums. If you haven't checked out any of the other videos, i would highly recommend you do.
the ghost is on purpose. I mean, he is in the Hall of Fame dude.
As an artist, you can see when he literally SEES the music and his pathing. Insanity
💯👌
I love improvising so i get how drummers can "know" what to play. What boggles my mind and appreciate how he listens while he plays is how he didnt listen to the track first to hear the different parts. He just jumped in.
Chad is the ultimate listener. RESPECT!!
There's another recent drumeo video where Chad talks about the ghosting, he says he's always been full of nervous energy ever since he was a kid, and if you watch the video both his feet are constantly bouncing, probably adds to the unique hi hat sound he has too.
He fucking nailed it.
Sounds unreal 🤯
Just imagine being Shannon Leto after watching this video. The poor guy probably rehearsed this song so many times in the studio before they got the final album version. And then Chad Smith comes along and nails it on the first try, without ever hearing the song😅Some parts were almost identical to the original version!
I wanted to see Jared and his reaction so bad and was stoked when I found out they actually did one. But it only being a short and not hearing them talk about it or even listen to the whole thing disappointed me. They could’ve just kept recording.
I loved Chad's so much more than other entries in this series. It really showed his understanding of music and song structure. Didn't take a full pass, jumped in and hit so many of the transitions spot on just because he knows how to make music. So good.
I cracked up when Chad just said "It's in three.. I think" , then he just started blasting away and nailed the entire thing.. 😅
What a legend 🔥
"not really in my wheel house"
Nah chad, you're in my playlist along side them.
I've watched this multiple times now, and blown away more every time. His confidence in committing to his flow was insane. If he felt like doing something, he didn't hesitate. It makes it seem like he's seeing the future, but he's really just listening and breaking it down as he plays. So much talent.
If you didn't react to this, you would be the only one out there who hasn't 🤣
Chad Smith has a video talking about ghosting the bass being his style haha so your bang on, it’s on drumeo. And he plays with his whole body and I think that’s part of it, I even see his face playing drum and I love it. Saw the chilli peppers on their stadium Arcadian tour and they did all their old hits and the whole new album with a massive oncore. They put on an epic show and each one of them is epic in their own right.
I love stuff like that.
No rules.
Truely a professional drummer. He doesn’t cover up his mistakes or attempt to be perfect. He is having a good time and exploring his drum set not trying to play it safe. He just keeps going and making great runs.
Chad is one of the most underrated players out there...The Chili Peppers are a funk band but Chad is a metal trained drummer and he gives the RHCP those hard hitting backbeats and pocket for days ✌️🤘🧐
💯
chad absolutely murdered this song. that was brilliant!
SO GOOD
This is a perfect example of a drummer with incredible talent and one who's just very good. He jumped into that song, no first pass to get a feel, and was so close to the actual song is nuts!!😮
And my God does he hit hard!
Love this video because he looks like he's having SO much fun, and also it really shows how a good seasoned muso can pick up a song quickly because they know how this kind of song would sound and be structured, and can feel their way in in a way that looks like magic to an amateur (like me)
Yup killed it!
that was quite impressive cuz i didn't think Chd would play the part so crisp and sharp
Excellent player
He must be a dream for recording or writing new music.
Everytime I see Will Ferrell imitate Chad Smith, he gets better & better. He's been steadily chopping wood. Practice makes perfect, kiddos. 🙂
Dudes ability to just lock in instantly is wild
Yup! 🤯
6:10 that first quick segment on the guitar caught him off guard but he instantly caught on and didn’t get caught off by it again. Amazing!
The smallest detail but so impressive in a way is that he instantly recognises when the the 2nd of half of that verse is starting to build-up back into the 2nd chorus begins & looses up the hi-hat @ 4:46 (Just as Shannon does in the original track). A true musician/performer to pick up on small nuances like that. 👌
You nailed it Ryan!
Great set of ears. Musicianship. Experience. Class.
Literally mind blowing. What's it take, maybe 16-20 bars before he has it totally LOCKED. Incredible.
Chad is truly a god of drums. You don’t meet very many musicians that can listen to a track that doesn’t have their instrument and instantly play it just about perfectly first try.
The mark of a consummate musician is how well they listen to those around them and adjust/interact accordingly. I have mad respect for Chad and his ability to pick up cues and change things up (or keep things consistent) on the fly. What a talent!
💯👌
Chad is a beast when he auditioned for Chilli Peppers someone told them this guy eats drums for dinner and indeed he does!!
🤣👌
I too have watched the original Drumeo video with Chad. I am the house band drummer for a weekly local open mic and get called on to play with a local artist that's trying out a new song or a song I'm not familiar with. This video from Chad is inspirational to see him just go full throttle into a song he doesn't know.
The biggest difference between Chad Smith and other drummers that have done these videos for drumeo, is that they all listen to the whole drumless track and take notes. He was listening to the drumless track and started playing. They even asked if he wanted to do another first take. Chad is also heavily influenced by John Bonham, and Neil Peart, that's where the bass drum ghost notes come from
He's the only one in this whole series that just dove right in garage band jam style. All the others would listen to and take notes and stuff then play along.
He actually became part of the song. Amazing talent. Wow
I've had a lot of reactions to this one pop up the past couple days. You're the first one who didn't seem to be under the impression that he was hearing the full track. Another great reaction vid. Thanks for sharing!
I've seen these before by drumeo.
They are always a drumless listen through. Otherwise you'd just recreate the drum part!
"What is up Andrew, it is UA-cam here again" 😂
I get goose bumps watching Chad in this video. Every time. It is simply amazing that he could capture the sense of the song that quickly and that easily. Brilliant.
Absolute defenition of groove drummer
Chad totally killed it in the first 15 seconds! Mad respect to him for doing this!
15 seconds to kill.
He is so confident and unbothered - absolutely brilliant.
"50 Seconds to Mars" is the funniest thing I've heard in years!
Oh, was waiting for this one 😊. Thanks!
When you consider the level of experience Chad has had playing with RHCP...and others that he has sat in with...his instinctual abilities are off the charts...👊
I like how drummers like Chad Smith and Dave Grohl play drums with such intensity and don't care if they break them or not! haha Just having fun!
Until you are sponsored or endorsed by drumming companies, breaking cymbals and heads from hitting too hard becomes very expensive.
I’d love to smack my kit with no regard for its longevity but my bank account says otherwise
I've already seen the original video (and many reactions)... you're in for an absolute treat!!! 😁
Had the pleasure of watching this as it premiered on YT and it was phenomenal watching him have so much fun on this 👌
It's crazy how viral this original video went. It just goes to show how much energy he brought to the video. As far as his bass drum ghost notes. He talks about it in another drumeo video.
I don't even play the drums (guitarist) but have probably watched the Drumeo video 20+ times over the past week. His energy + insane skills is captivating af. Well done.
💯👌
Yes! I’ve been waiting for you to check this out. Chad is one of those dudes who is humble and amazingly talented, shown here where he’s nervous before doing something he absolutely destroys in the best way. I’ve watched this video a bunch and watching him actively listen and make subtle changes on the fly is awe inducing. He picks up on the structure, anticipates changes, from the bridge to the breakdown to the silent bit before going into the last chorus… so good. Drumeo’s series of “drummer hears song they’ve never heard” started strong with Larnell, but it’s only gotten better, I can’t wait to see who else they stick behind the kit.
FInally. I've been waiting for your reaction video! Thank you
Hope you enjoyed it!
Chad really killed it... super impressed
You could absolutely see him lock that beat in his head when he was bobbin his chin in the beginning before he hadn't even heard the drums. Fuckin unreal.
That series of videos are by far my favorite. When I should be watching “intro to drumming,” I’m watching these legends adapt and slay.
loved your breakdown with this and the insights at the end. I used to be in a band where I used to just record drums for a few mins with just a rough tempo and the band had nothing written. After my takes the band would write the parts and it was a very different way of studio sessions than any band ive been in. Was a great outcome though. I also LOVE the fact Chad was nervous doing this. Reminds you that even the greats have the struggles
The thing that strikes me is Chad didn't even wait to hear the full track. He just jumped right in
This instant performance was more than breathtaking. This is what a REAL musician is all about. Amazing.
Chad keeps both his legs shaking, and this results in ghosts on the kick and the hi-hat.
His musical instincts are incredible. He picked up on the vibe of the song within seconds.
Dude he freaking nailed it. I loved his energy and his take about on it. His wheel house has no ceiling. Thanks for the content
And the way he jumped right in without hearing the whole track
You could tell by his chuckle at the beginning this was going to be a cake walk for him.
Love his musical improvisation and he just looked like he was having soooooo much fun.... didn't know who Chad Smith was before but total FAN now. Wow! Such a joy to watch someone so talented! Love the song choice Drumeo!
ive watched the video loads of time, still brings goosebumps to see an absolute master for their craft smashing it. his musical ear, anticipation and flexibility is amazing. watching it now you can see how he leaves the tiniest bits of space, a moment of delay to see where the song goes and then jump on it, only ever makes it more incredible to play blind and still perform like this... for me RHCP has always been about Flea (as a former bass player) so i never paid much due to Chad but when you think about it, you cant play with a bunch of musicians and fill arenas without being of equal caliber.
seeing other drummers in the series they take a few plays through, they tweak it, polish it and still dont get close the musicality and feel that chad delivered here. nothing taken from them, its an almost impossible job to jump in blind and play perfectly, Chads attitude and just diving in is what shines through. I used to play brass instruments too and could never do Jazz because i couldnt let go of making mistakes and feeling it as i played, which makes my respect for this even greater.
I’m not a drummer or a rocker but live music in general. Came across the original video and was mind blown at this guys ability to improvise so quickly. Mad respect. Watch it a couple times now and UA-cam is sending me reaction videos of other drummers watching lol so that’s cool😂
Amazing! Thanks, did not see this on drumeo, cheers!
I love seeing everyones reaction to this. The very first time i watched it, I knew people would go crazy over it. It's still hard to believe he's never heard it before, because he nails it. Goes to show that once you understand music so well, you can play along to most songs!
Genious on a scale that most of us will ever know, beautiful
You’re a true legend. Thanks for giving the people what they want. 🎉
Drumeo and reaction videos like yours, has introduced me to so many legendary humans. And it gives me a good feeling and perspective on life in general.
Gotta love how he snapped a stick and seamlessly kept it going. Just wow.
The Sabian facility in Canada is not far from where I live, and Chad played their cymbals for 35 years or so. A buddy of mine worked there for a long time, and he always said that Chad was his favorite drummer to work with, amazingly talented but also very humble, that chill Cali vibe. Great reaction!
Chad great drummer great feel Amazing 😮
Chad shows why he is a Legend! Truly amazing performance. I got goosebumps when i saw the video the first time. His talent and his passion are really awesome. I love this guy.
The lag behind a bit makes this real. Tremendous drummer.
Always loved this guy, but after the drumeo stuff I gained a whole new appreciation for how god damn good he actually is.
