Thanks for featuring me! I hope my example serves as a useful one for people trying to make a big splash with a small channel.
I definitely learned a few things myself from vidIQ's analysis. Like apparently an average view duration of 20 minutes is actually really good? I was looking at that and thinking it was bad, since it was such a small percentage of the whole video. There's a whole world of backend and presentational technique that I knew nothing about.

I'm pretty sure the average view duration doesn't factor in subsequent views by the same people, so if you think about it, one person watching the video for 20 minutes (1 20-minute view) might *also* continue watching that same video the next day! (Yet *another* 20-minute view).
Edit: seems I was right, apparently UA-cam calculates this by watch time/total number of views, so it does also count subsequent viewings by the same person on different days!

I am totally disillusioned. I don't get impressions even with great metrics. >15% CTR, huge engagement, no dislikes, high AVD. But UA-cam refuses to show my video to anyone, I often get less than 100 impressions and even get 0 impressions from time to time, I am sick of this platform

ya same, I make football (European football) short videos and long videos and for past 2 weeks no one was is watching them, I feel like I'm black listed or shadow banned or something. I don't have any copyright claims or strikes. My account is clean. I was getting more views and impressions first month when I didn't have any followers, really odd and discouraging.

Something that I DID decide to do was change the text on my thumbnails to white text and update my video titles so it draws in for more of a conversation aspect. Lots of people already use words and phrases like BEST, must have, essentials. But I feel like answering the question of “why” ____________ in the title incorporates more of a discussion.
It makes the videos more interactive and it’s like the creator is hanging out with their viewers. It’s like the creator is talking to their best friends.
So those are some things that I would recommend doing for your own channel.

The problem with the "The algorithm works tirelessly for you" statement is that most times it doesn't. Most times if you launch a video and it gets recommended to the wrong audience so the CTR and watch time is low the algorithm just flags that video "bad" and moves on. The only reason the algorithm tried in this example was because of the 28 minute AVD which is a massive outliner and not a normal AVD to get. If any of my videos drop blow 5% CTR that video is dead.

  • @betsi_jae
    @betsi_jae Рік тому +10

Absolutely everything in this video is 100% true. I just started my channel, and monetized it in 4 weeks with 10 videos, over 3k subs, and over 5k watch time hrs (for some reason it took YT a sec to catch up). I did exactly what this creator did, and my channel is growing very quickly. Plus, I'm enjoying making the videos and the community we're building is beautiful.
I'm on week 5, approaching 4k subs and 7k watch time hrs. I can see everyday how the algorithm does its thing, sending out feelers here and there. Small channels can absolutely succeed.🎉

Hey man, amazing job you did there with your new channel! I have a question, was this your first UA-cam channel? Or 2nd? 3rd? How many channels did it take for you to get it “right”? How much trial and error basically did it take to get to a successful channel as the one you are speaking of now?
I am sure this channel will continue to blow and grow with the stats you are talking about. That is amazing! 👍

I make sure to talk in my videos, I respond to most comments, and I don't fill my videos with unnecessary fluff 😊. I also teach my audience lots of valuable things in every single video and I try to leave them with a pleasant/positive feeling so they are more willing to come back. So that is what I did for my channel and the exact same thing happened with my channel. The only difference is that my audience is a bit smaller so my numbers are not as big. But it is also getting people to check out the game and other videos I do about the game as they are getting interested in City of Heroes.

If i have 0 views, 0 subscribers and i want to make a video about a topic that doesn't exist on UA-cam, where will my viewers find my video? If i want to make a video about how people life's changed from 1950 to 2023. There are no keywords or specific audience for this. How can i make this work? Or how will this work on UA-cam, how UA-cam will find me viewers for my video, assuming it's a good video for everybody

UA-cam, occasionally rewards small channels and its all fine and good, until UA-cam shuts the algorithm taps off and then petitions the channel to buy advertisements for their channel... I know of a channel that has 800k subscribers, avetage views of 500k per video... then it tanked to 800-1000 views per video and at the same time UA-cam asks them to buy advertisements... sounds like sleazy behavior to me.

I've been creating videos on this channel and my older one (which was my main one for most of my time in UA-cam). I was making bad quality content for an over saturated market. The videos that did well were the one off ones in less competitive areas. I couldn't convert into subs though because that's not what my content was about. Now I've learned so much from vidiq that I'm focusing on quality over quantity, niche down to have a better target audience, and things are going much better. I finally hit 1000 subs August 1 and now I'm at 1045 already. My monthly watch hours were around 100 and now over 250 for the last 28 days. I still have a long way to go for monetization but I no longer feel the algorithm is against me. I know it was me all along 😂

I am just curious... As a very small channel not doing great, I let most of my views come in organically. But now UA-cam starts removing my views... Why? Now I resort to sharing on groups etc, which sometimes damages the videos? Is organic views not the way to go anymore as UA-cam removes my views? I rarely share my videos with anybody.

  • @Vengeful_Wyvern
    @Vengeful_Wyvern Рік тому +2

This proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that UA-cam DOES HATE small channels. The reason this one popped off is because of those few people who actually watched a decent amount which is why it started getting recommended. And then a high CTR got it shown off even more to the point that those commenters who are fans of the game found it. And with them watching the entirety of the vid, raised it’s recognition even more with the massive increase in watch time. If CTR is so meaningless, then clickbait thumbnails/titles wouldn’t succeed at getting vids hundreds of thousands of views. The simple fact is a small channel has little to no views so it doesn’t get recognition by UA-cam. Some people might find it and check it out by happenstance and then you get lucky with actually being shown somewhat. But then it stops because no one watches so UA-cam doesn’t show it at all anymore. That’s the truth if it.

UA-cam needs to try out the first videos fo a new channel. Wing Commander is a big name. Retrospectives, as you said, are interesting. Channel got lucky that their video was promoted to the correct audience. Now the thing is: How will their next videos do? With X-Wing you have a Star Wars name. So yeah. Good chance that will make it too. But what happens when they dive into more niche content? Or when they create content which a lot of their now subs don't want to see? Doesn't even need to be off topic. But let's say they start analyzing a game like The Dig. There are a lot of channels who have one or two success videos while the other videos they are doing don't take off for whatever reason. You can look at your own upload history to see that.
I also don't think it gives good insight into the YT Algo by picking out the few channels who have success. How about some more insight into channels who do make good content but don't make it? It's easy finding channels taking off and then coming up with an explanation why they did take off. That's just feeding on survivor bias. It's way harder finding a reason why a smaller channel who does everything right is not taking off. And they exist. Look for these. Where you yourself think "Damn. That's a good channel. Why is it so small?"

If possible, kindly include this channel for auditing.

I’ve been struggling a lot with impressions, but I can’t seem to find any good in depth analysis of how to get more impressions. Obviously I know the basics like high CTR and good retention, but it’s so much More then that. Besides most of the videos I’ve seen never actually tell you how to increase your CTR.(Just an idea for you guys if you ever want to revisit impressions)

I just started this channel a month ago exactly at 20 subs and no views im at 4k watch hours gaining about 100 subs a day and like 1k views a day … All i did was put a short clip in the first few secs of the video also the thumbnail has to invoke curiosity and make sure the thumbnail and the first clip match up so u provide what the viewer wants .. Good Luck Everyone 💪🏼💪🏼

A question: is more important time or percent of length? For example, if I pubblish a video of 8 min and average is 6 min or i pubblish a video of 20min and average is 10 min, what is better for UA-cam Algoritm ?

I had actually done the supply and demand strategy on my first video, and it's the best performing video of mine! But I didn't use that strategy on my next video, which I should have. Although, this video I will be trying to apply this strategy on one of my next video!

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
OCG here...What do you mean, "who?" Granted after three years on this glorious platform I expected growth I've only ever seen in adult films starring Godzilla. And my subscribers...Well, I've seen higher numbers in an "All you can eat hotdog contest." (The winner last year ate 1, 212 of the damn things. True story...kind of). So why am I telling you this? Well because this channel is all about growing on youtube and I MUST GROW DAMNIT! *coughs* Anyway...Help me. And no, this isn't a can of spam. I hate spam. Awful stuff

Even if one finds a niche gap that has not yet been filled on UA-cam, it might not be of any help to that particular creator.
So, if I somehow happen to find out that a massive number of people are searching for “boiling a frozen dinosaur egg” and there still is no video about it on UA-cam, this doesn’t really help me, since my channel is about repairing guitars.
Yes, that video will bring me a bunch of viewers, but will not help my channel, nor attract subscribers, that I want to attract, which are people who want to watch a Guitar repair videos.
In the guitar repair a video world, I really can’t think of any type of repair or any detail that a massive number of people would be searching for, but that yet hasn’t been published.

Actually, I also made some shorts and tried my best to make them. I did not want to copy or anything and my passion was to share the anime that no one heard of .... but I have one problem that I can't speak well and don't like to show my face. I tried my best and still want to support my family just a little bit. Now I got a bit of motivation to make countless videos to make my audience enjoy and watch. Thanks vidIQ for making my day.

So based in this analysis one of my channels Yesterday showed that I had (for 14 videos) 45.8k impressions, 5.4k views, with the avg watch time of 31mins = 2.8k watch hrs (Im rounding down on all of my numbers btw). The channel has been active for 2 months, but most of this happened within the last 10days. I'm currently looking at my analytics (12hrs later) and my impressions are 96.3k, views are at 6.6k, with the avg watch time of 33mins = 3.7k watch hrs. I had just hit my first 100 subs on Aug 17th, 2023. and I am now almost at 200 subs. Its funny, because based on my average starting out, mines were higher than his, but my channels isn't being boosted as much. And I for sure know the value my content brings. This stuff is so fascinating, because its different for everyone. This guy is awesome for letting you do a deep dive into his channel. Thanks for the breakdown, I feel like I have a better understanding of the numbers.

What I kinda want to know is, if your channel is a few years old, and if you've only posted videos on there for fun for the last few years until now when you want to actually be serious about it - does the algorithm still work for you? or is it too late and have you been soft locked out of any chance of videos going viral because your channel is old and still has quite a few videos on it?

Then tell me why on incognito tabs of UA-cam, you only get videos from channels with 10M+ subs. I have tried for a year. And only got 32 subs. Sure I haven’t uploaded in 2-3 months, but I have a niche I am trying to work on, only to get like 15 views, because YT DOES favor big channels. They will even put ads and take all of the revenue on smaller channels.
