Lars Ulrich Talks About Motley Crue. GLAM vs Thrash

- Lars Ulrich, like, talks about an incident were he like, yelled at Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee in 1982. Also featured is Stephen P from RATT, who like, talks about James Hetfield. + More stuff.
Nikki Sixx wearing 18 inch heels chasing Lars Ulrich.... I'd pay to see that!
Lars is a coward for running from a hewoman.
FieldMarshalRommel23 well he is small lol.
Haha and Nikki is like 6'7" without shoes on
Would’ve paid to see Nikki beat the hell out of Lars, seriously

Bon JOvi wasn't metal. @diascrive
@@tonyiacomi4822 bon jovi's not metal? What'd you mean bro? Haven't you ever heard shot through the heart!? That song really cooks!
@@guitarofdestiny I love the song. Not saying its not good. Its kind of hard rock. Maybe touching on metal. The thing is is that Bon Jovi has so many songs that aren't metal so I guess I don't really consider it metal. I like the song don't get me wrong. I don't think Bon Jovi considers his music metal either. I saw an interview in which he said they were not a metal band but a rock band with some heavier songs.
@@tonyiacomi4822 you are totally correct and now that you mention it, I think I saw that interview as well. Thanks for the kind comment, my friend.

Well he wasnt the one who got kicked out of the band and cried about it for 30 years

Ironically they went on to use Motley Crue's producer
I remember the early 80's was dominated by Motley Crue, Ratt, Wasp, Iron Maiden and Priest. The late 80's had a kind of split between "radio" metal like Warrent, Skid Row, Firehouse, and White Lion. Then Thrash got popular with Metallica, Slayer, Tetament, Death Angel, Anthrax and bands like that.
You forgot Guns N' Roses, they were bigger than all of them at the time
+Young Sandwich Yeah. You are absolutely right. They blew up the radio waves at the time. Guns & Roses and Metallica just about dominated everyone in the late 80's.
How dare you forget about Megadeth.
Umm no Starship?? They kicked ass too 👍
Is funny that they hated Mötley Crüe, cause after heard Dr Feelgood they look for Bob Rock to produce the black album and they become campus...
But metallica lyrics matters
Bob rock ruined them
@@kostasmip410 Bob rock just brought them to mainstream that's all motley are pussies.
@@misfitdanzig8152 its funny when you think about it. The worst Metallica albums ever, where made when Bob rock was with them (black album, load, reload, st anger) as soon as Bob rock left they started finding their way again (kinda)
Actually bob asked them to produced their album..at first metallica just only want bob to mixed their album before bob asked to produced it..
I like the music but hate how thrash started the whole elitist "our metal is the only metal" mindset that has now carried on to all the insufferable fanboys of various extreme subgenres we have to deal with now.

@@AT-5000_Autodialer even Pantera ditched their Glam phase in the mid eighties, and became a Thrash/Groove metal band.

Agreed. Metal is metal. Anyone with time to file it all into little categories and fight about what goes where, must not have a women.
Ironic that Lars hates on Motley Crüe so much, since years later they plopped a copy of Dr. Feelgood on Bob Rock's desk, saying they wanted the black album to sound like that.
+Kenneth Sutton that really says more about the talent of Bob Rock and not a lot about Dr Feelgood tbh fam. But I love both bands, but they are different in both genre and goals.
+Kenneth Sutton Well, in Lars defense, that was back then when he was young closed minded curmudgeon and a gay hating bigot. He's grown up since then.

Well said. All true.
its funny because metallica didnt stay true to metal and basically turned into a rock band
their first 4 albums and garage days(best sounding album even though it was covers)were great
and after the black album( i thought it was okay but not old metallica) pure garbage
Before theatre of pain they were a metal band

True story. So my family is friends with Pamela Anderson's family *Her mom and my grandmother are friends* and when my mom and uncle met Tommy and Nikki. My Uncle was wearing a Slayer shirt and Tommy was giving my uncle the stink eye the whole time at least that's what my Uncle thinks, maybe it was because Tommy was flirting with my mom right in front of Pam and my mom wasn't flirting back but who knows. Nikki on the other hand was nice. He showed my Uncle Deftones for the first time
I will say one more thing about Motley, you have to remember they came around at a time when MTV was all synth pop, Motley Crue, kept rock&roll seedy and disreputable, at a time when it wasn't all that easy. the PMRC loathed them, which is a big bonus in my book.
Quiet Riot is the band that really got things rolling on MTV for metal.
Like the Go Go's were synth pop.

am I the only one that likes both glam and thrash?
ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣ ΒΕΝΕΤΗΣ I like them both
Here too
Hell no
ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣ ΒΕΝΕΤΗΣ I love both. The music, not the culture
I'm a huge metal head absolutely love my thrash but the only glam band I like is Motley Crue
I absolutely love Stephens opinion on it! 'Aren't we one big metal family? NO!' hahaha! I've never been into the trash scene much myself, more into the glam side, but all n all it was a great time for music!
haha did you mean to spell thrash like that?
0:28 11th Commandment: THOU SHALL NOT BLUR IMAGE OF CLIFF BURTON
I'm a thrash guy myself but I've always found the "poser" accusation against glam disingenuous... the older you get (I'm 34 now) the more you see the sheer amount of posing and conformity involved in thrash as well...
I've always seen that attitude as a way to distance themselves from the other bands of the era and set themselves apart. A sort of branding, to establish the "metallica" brand as something above and apart from the glut of other dime a dozen underground metal bands aspiring for fame. But part of it too is a definite rejection of excess and the poppy lyrics about breakup and sex that were common themes. Metallica and other thrash bands stayed true to the doomy, melancholic tone of Sabbath, while also adding original ideas and themes. They pretty much did their own thing and didn't care for trends. They're the proverbial "bad boy" who doesn't play by the rules.
As someone who is not only a huge thrasher but also enjoys Ratt, Motley Crue, and Def Leppard, im happy to see that they are on good terms nowadays and are just kicking it and enjoying life.
Too fast for love and shout at the devil are fuckin killer albums.
i feel the same way about what people are calling metal but instead of glam its metalcore and deathcore.
tlfilms you aren't listening to the right bands. It's the absolute same thing that's happening today. All the popular bands (Attila, Sleeping with Sirens, Asking Alexandria, Falling in Reverse) are complete shit to the underground, the REAL new age metal (ERRA, Angel Vivaldi, Monuments, The Sorrow, Within the Ruins, TesseracT, Textures, Walking Across Jupiter, Fallujah, Rings of Saturn, Dreamshade, Auras, After the Burial, Circle of Contempt, etc.)
KINGPORTH Yea i understand there are good bands from those genres but those bands to me are like motley true where I think thats a good glam band. The rest just suck
people always assume i listen to death metal, it's always death-metal, like wtf is that the only sub genre of heavy metal? holy shit i hardly listen to death metal, black metal is more muh jam
I love Motley Crue, and I like Metallica..
If I'm in the mood for something aggressive and fast, I throw on some metallica, if I'm feeling something crunchy and sleazy, I listen to motley crue. So there, why not listen to both? they both wrote great metal songs in different ways. Why only enjoy and stick to one style when there are so many different types of metal? At the end Stephen Pearcy said "aren't we one big metal family?" FUCK YES!!! it's all METAL \m/
Hey watch your profanity
Exactly. I agree with Pearcy. Also RATT is amazing.
Thrash : "Glam Sucks"
Glam Metal : "Shut up virgin"
Thrash: "shut up poser"
Thrash: (to glam post 1988) Yes, I'd like a number 3 large with a coke and extra fries.
How about “Glam Thrash” together…sub genre? Someone do that now
Compare Motley Crue, Ratt and Winger to Pitbull, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, etc. Enough said. Don't complain about commercial metal. The commercial shit of today is a billion times worse. At least people required some ability to sing, play guitar, drums, etc. when it came to glam metal. In modern commercial music, hip hop/EDM crap, all you need is a shitty meaningless bunch of words (as long as they are catchy) and a simple hip house beat produced by some random person who usually goes uncredited. You would give your left nut to hear Motley Crue on commercial radio again and you know it.
Not even the words are good. Most of the pop lyrics you hear today sound like an 8 year old wrote them.
I gave my right nut just to have them kicked off, so no...FUCK motley crue!!! .I.
Modern commercial rap arguably requires very little artistic/musical skill (although those guys are masters at marketing), but I wouldn't lump EDM with it. Some of those guys know music theory inside and out and are very skilled at digitally putting together music that would probably take you years of learning and experience to do yourself.
Also, many old people complained about metal in the 80's as just being a bunch of tuneless noise that only required screaming and guitar wanking with no actual requirement of being able to write a song. Obviously that wasn't true, but you're saying the same shit about electronic music.
If you wanna be mad at the lack of solid commercial rock today, look no further than the rise of sad rock during the 90's and its continuation in teh 00's. Nirvana (and Teen Spirit in particular) was a Trojan Horse that ended up ushering in a new wave of downer, hipster indie rock that caused kids with any sense to jump ship and hop onto rap and eventually EDM. Only giant fuckin losers want to consistently hear narcissistic woe-is-me professional victim music (especially music made by rich assholes who actually have it really well). Blame the lack of commercial rock and metal and the dominance of rap and EDM on that shit. The music world would look very different indeed if Andrew Wood never died and Mother Love Bone ended up being the giant Seattle band to break instead of Nirvana (and doubly positive since that would also mean no Pearl Jam/no Eddie Vedder).
Aren't we one big happy family? NO!!!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Some 80`s Popmusic is better than todays Metal :D
+Django Münchhausen Sad but true
+Django Münchhausen you're not listening to the right shit then.
cryptomnesiac Im not listen to shit at all. Name me a modern band who`s good as Iron Maiden, Metallica, Skid Row back than.
+Django Münchhausen first off, it's a meaningless question because you can't quantify "as good as" or "better than" in a subjective topic like this. there was a period of time when metal had commercial success, but whether or not it's popular that has nothing to do with the quality of music. good music will survive whether a genre is popular or it's underground. when it's underground you just have to look harder. pallbearer, windhand, occultation, high on fire, aura noir.. all great metal bands that are "newer" across a few genres.
cryptomnesiac The bands are ok, just ok. Dvar is a good band.
I LOVE MOTLEY CRUE AND METALLICA THERE BOTH EQUALLY AMAZING
Then they released Black and Load,Reload and they weren't as fast and aggressive. They were radio friendly.
Lol, the outlaw torn, bleeding me and Fixxer radio friendly?
Dude, first listen to those albums
80% of Load and Reload are totally not radio friendly xD
Bruh the black album was great. You gonna tell me the unforgiven, wherever I may roam, the god that failed and sad but true weren't masterpieces of rock?!
Listen to the lyrics
There's a video of them roaming around London or some shit, James says "metal is dead". They rode whatever wave was popular.
I think glam/hair bands have a lot more appeal if you think of them as “rock” and not as metal. Bands like Motley Crue and whitesnake had a lot of sweet instrumentals, and Nikki sixx in particular was a great lyricist. The singing I could understand not always being a fan of, especially since Motley Crue was only good live for a couple years out of their entire career because of vince
Then it turns out the real posers were Metallica who came out and did everything they said they were against..... music videos, ballads, commercial radio, cutting off all our hair.
so you only like kill em all or what
Why Metallica become so big, influential and one of the greatest of all time? Ask to Dave Ellefson 0:01

+Ian Sorola Me too man haha! But 80s Glam is still more Metal than todays metal
+Classic Rock Clips right on. I feel people who hate on Great Glam Bands, like Crue, are a bit hypocritical
+Classic Rock Clips why?
+Classic Rock Clips Same. I like metallica more, but the 80s Glam was good. Any music from the past is better than todays crap.
Diane Barajas AMEN
My two favorite bands, MetallicA and Mötley Crüe
They’re both awesome people need to curb their hate on different types of rock/metal, I also love AC/DC
Dude people argue about Megadeth vs Metallica too and for some reason they can't like both.
@@H4I2I2EE honestly, MetallicA is my preference BUT I still like both
Thrash was formed in response to the 1980's glam era, which imo, kind of dooms it's legitimacy as a genre, cos it's formed on the premise that you cant do this, that or the other; you have to play fast and scream, it is very much a formula in the same way many thrash metal heads claim glam to be, you have your dress codes and musical requirements; sounds alot like glam doesn't it? Thrash is only different from glam cosmetically, but at it's core it's a parallel.
It's funny how Lars seems to be bragging about running away from a fight. "I ran my mouth, and then I ran away so I wouldn't get my ass kicked. I was so badass."
Metallica got me into metal, and I was anti-glam myself. Then just a few years ago, long after glam metal ended, I revisited it and found that some of it wasn't so bad. I'm not about to defend Poison or Cinderella, but there were a few bands that put out decent stuff, Motley Crue included, as well as W.A.S.P., early Def Leppard, and even Skid Row.
+John Riddles Heh, yeah glam metal had its points. Pour some sugar on me and others. Fun crazy party songs, though thanks to cocaine they often didnt have much of a bottom end.
But i think Lars was making fun of himself and fighting in general.
+Thewise one If the radio stations didn't play hair bands, they would have just played more new wave/synth-pop or some other crap. It's not like every Def Leppard album sold was one less Candlemass album sold. "Real metal" doesn't get less popular when more commercial forms of metal are popular. If anything, the opposite is true. Some of the genre's fans moved on to other trends or still listen to hair bands today, but I'm sure some graduated to the real thing. It's not like metalheads listen to Jute Gyte and Crimson Massacre from Day 1. You need to work your way up to that. The hair bands were gateway bands. Gateway bands, as crappy as they can be, are ultimately good for metal.
W.A.S.P. was basically shock rock/traditional heavy metal.
+Thewise one I love how you mentioned Maiden never got exposure, I could go on a rant on that
You do know that Glam Metal was also an underground metal scene in the early 80's. It wasn't until the mid to late 80's as Glam "Metal" acts like Poison, Warrent, Cinderella, etc, would be a more popular demand in the radio airwaves and in MTV, overshadowing actual Glam Metal acts like W.A.S.P., Dokken, Icon, etc, who actually try to work hard to at least attain some mainstream success like the other First Wave G.M. bands like Crue, Quit Riot (early 80's), and Ratt. To break it down to you:
First wave of Glam = Traditional metal influences with glam looks
Second wave of Glam = Glam looks with no traditional metal influences
It was a difrent time back then
But now when we look back you cant say Glam and Hair Metal are bad
They made some of the greatest solos, riffs and songs overall in the history of Metal
If you ask me we shouldnt fight a war against ourselves
Both Thrash and Glam are true metal
Hardcore is more heavy and real and Black Flag and Minort Threat r the perfecto example
Even back then it made no sense. None of the thrash guys hated Van Halen or AC/DC or Ozzy or even Def Leppard for that matter, yet they hated all these LA bands who sounded very similar to them (I mean pre-Bon Jovi glam) but also wore spandex and hairspray. I don't think they hated the music as much as they hated men looking like that, and men getting more girls than them. Seems like the problem with the thrash guys was a combination of homophobia and insecurity about their own masculinity.

At the end of the day, isn't it just marketing? Metallica wasn't marketing themselves as that same type of rock/metal so they had to badmouth the genre that was their competition to distinguish themselves. Hair/glam metal was very very popular at the time and being shown on MTV(no internet at the time). Thrash/speed metal wasn't getting any airplay.

Glam and thrash are great genres of metal. It's our job as metal heads to keep these bands of both genres alive
WASP is a cool band too! first album is killer!
Musical grace = melodic, harmonic vocals & guitar playing. The more these elements are emphasized - the more graceful the music will be. Concerning metal, you can be heavy & graceful. You just need to know how to combine them well to make good, catchy, appealing music as glam bands so often did. Dokken - being one of my favorites - are such a good example of this. They've been sometimes heavy and sometimes soft, but consistently melodic and harmonic throughout. That is good metal music I think.
Glam metal was perfect for the time..
What's the song at 0:13?
I was there in 82, the yell was "DEATH TO FALSE METAL"
I preffer trash than glam. They are the true successors of the genuine origin heavy metal. Hair metal has change to rock ballad and that's the proof.

Ironically James Hetfield would constantly go see Motley Crue in the early Too fast for Love club days. "They were good for a total hair band". As for your other point, Metallica received the recognition they did because 'Hair' or 'Glam' bands were mainstream 'Metal' acts in the eye of the media and MTV. They increased people's awareness of all metal. Therefore, when Metallica made a big mainstream impact with the black album and caught a larger audience they became the big name they are today.
Metallica were a big name before the Black Album. They weren't all over the radio but everyone who was into music knew their name.

I'm a song guy, the song as a whole comes before technical prowess. It doesn't really matter how quick and precise a person is on an instrument if they can't turn that ability into musical rhythm. I feel that a guitarist with a stronger grasp on song writing as a whole will always have a leg up on a guitarist who's solely technical.
100%. EVH being the exception
Not really. Such a guitar player might have a better chance at massive commercial success but the technical guy has a much better chance at putting food on the table.
You know what I got out of that? Stephen Pearcy aged fine! Also, my son should really learn to log out, so he doesn't sound like he's openly admiring Stephen Pearcy every time his mom watches a video with him in it.

Stephen Pearcy mannerism kinda similar to Scott Gorham,so laid back.....
Lars is the one who ran dude.
That’s not what he said , he said him and James insulted Motley Crüe , and Nikki changed them away , unless you think Sixx ONLY chased Ulrich and left James ?? Sixx was a rowdy Heroine addict , he would have killed James too and James knows that , That’s why they ran , there piss brat
I love all these bands, but I think Stephen has a good point - is it not supposed to be one big metal family???
Best part was Pearcy's quote at the end. "NO! They're the next breed."
I was told that in the 80s, James Hetfield went to a young Dimebag Darrell's (at the time called Diamond Darrell) and spat on his Bon Jovi poster. Can anybody confirm or deny this?
I Love Ellefson's comment "Everytime they came out with a record, it was just miles ahead of where everybody else was. Lars and James are Mick and Keith of metal."
I still think Too Fast for Love is the Ultimo everyman's rock album. Clever? No. Self-aware? Probably not. Musically accomplished? Hardly. Fun? Fuck yes. I can imagine when that album comes out and done ripped jeans-wearing kid sees the attitude embodying cover. He turns that on, hears the almost punk-like riff of Live Wire and it's exactly what he's looking for. It's not metal but I never got the impression that Crüe were posers. Not to the degree of Quiet Riot, Poison, and Warrant at least.
