Cliff Burton talks about Dave Mustaine (Radio Interviews)
Вставка

- Quick video of Cliff Burton talking about Dave Mustaine during two different radio interviews; One being WXXV 103.1 Chicago in 1986 and the other after a Metallica gig (I think...) on February 7, 1985 at The Variety Theatre Cleveland, Ohio.
The first interview was all joking and laughs but Kirk does seem to chirp in a little, with Cliff coming off as the reputable guy he is held as.
Wow. Hearing them talk shit about Dave and Megadeth really puts in perspective what Mustaine went through.
Dave was the antagonist in the band, he's the only reason he got kicked out.
jack mayhoff antagonist would write 4 fucking thrash song for metallica? and plus dave didnt even get a second chance
ng jason no one but him said he never got a second chance, for all we know, they were tired of his baffoonery for a while before the gave him the boot. don't get me wrong, he's one of my favourite musicians, I would have loved to see them write more songs together. now we have megadeth and metallica. so it all ended up okay in the end. They should have kicked out Lars instead
jack mayhoff id rather have a great metallica rather than two good bands
ng jason so you're saying neither metallica or megadeth are great ? they're just good ? and if dave would have stayed, he never would have written everything he had. it inspired him to become what he was.
Don't forget they were still kids with egos at this time.
Now Lars is a baby with ego lol.
No but out of shit, I know Lars is actually a pretty cool guy lately, wish I could've met him when they played here last month.
Sebastian Gustav & Drugs
They were kids? Flawed argument even a 5 year kid knows what stealing is and can differentiate right from wrong.
Is 20 kid age or have i messed up on something with their ages
Yeah because multiplatinum rock star adults never have egos 😯
Funny how the bands themselves have set aside their differences, though butthurt fanboys can't seem to do the same.
Yeah but this is back when both bands were actually good. It's fun to watch these videos and get caught in 1980's drama. But yeah, your point still stands that the band members as of 2017 have set aside their differences.
@@Doomzdayxx its 2020 and this comment is still facts :)

James will never FULLY let go of it all. He’s not a dick about it, but notice how he automatically shuts down any time Dave brings up making new music together

When someone’s not in your band you generally don’t use his songs for half your record.
Many bands that have had members leave or kicked out and still use their material is a lot more common than you think, like Slipknot for example. After the first vocalist left (which I don't remember his name) the band still used the riffs and lyrics and material that he contributed to in the debut, Iowa and even Subliminal Verses album
@@johnsantos2133 mustaine said to not use his material
@@johnsantos2133 Anders Colesefini is his name.
Good thing they never used his songs for "half" a record. Mustaine's writing is mostly represented in Kill em All, which is 3 Mustaine songs, and one short part in Phantom Lord. Just a couple Mustaine riffs in Ride the Lightning, then 0 Mustaine in MoP.
no doubt he contributed quite a bit to early Metallica's quality, but people overstate how much.
@@sdjslkdjlsskldjslkdjsl8262 He also wrote Seek and destroy. Look it up. Its the reason why James can play "the original solo" And not kirks Transcription. Dave taught him it, just like how he taught James and the rest how to properly use their gear and instrument, Not including cliff because he already knew the works and was in a band already before he decided to join Metallica over the fact they allowed him to do some solo stuff on their songs and in concert.
Dave wrote seek and destroy and you can hear his voice and playing on the demo tape for that song.
Metallica are liars, not kirk and cliff but mainly James and Lars. Who both treated Jason like shit. Are the problem. And they still have yet to admit to that. Typical corporatist sell outs.
I just saw a picture of Cliff and Dave together from not too before the accident in 1986.
***** NO WAY!!! I never knew that! Did they hang out or anything?
The whole story is so friggin' weird. I've heard that Lars and Dave were still very much in contact as far back as when Megadeth released 'Peace Sells...' Kinda like an on-again off-again friendship is what it sounds like. Even though they all make it sound like some 3 decade long feud. Which it was, but the way they all make it sound is like if they had met in person during that time they'd literally try and kill each other. lol
Anyway, I found a link to the picture of Cliff and Dave from '86. It is definitely from just before the accident. Check your messages. :)
Ah, I think you're right. It's really cool that the two of them could still hang out. Cliff's girlfriend Corrine said something to the effect that they got along really well. Have you read Joel McIver's biography on Cliff?
Definitely! Now I have to get Dave's book, haha!
***** Sure! I just hope evil UA-cam lets me post it. Be right back!
Dave nowdays say that Cliff was great friend and are very mised, i dont think he and Cliff ended up with rage or something, probably they were close friends at Cliff last moments.. this interviev are shit, because we all know, how fast young guys changing mind
Oh my fucking god James and Kirk were immature. Notice how Cliff is the only one not fucking around? Haha, jesus... Glad they changed! Still love them though...
lol what are you talking about they were funny as hell. That's how you're supposed to be when you're in a metal band and you're 20. I love Dave Mustaine and Megadeth (seen them twice live) but he was so insecure and felt like he had to show the world that he's had his payback on Metallica after what they did to him when nobody really cared about it anymore. And that just made him look pathetic and small all the time no matter how heavy, fast, technical and good his music was (I still prefer most of Metallica's stuff but you get my point). So they had the right to make fun of him and people asking stupid ass questions like "why there's no picture of Dave on your record" when he wasn't even a band member anymore. Thank god Dave finally grew up and stopped crying about why he's not number one on the charts like Metallica and just started minding his own (very kickass and impressive) business.
VlaDuZa
Were very young, immature, and not know how to deal with the differences between them! But I think Dave was, is, and always will be better than Kirk and James playing his guitar! (sorry for the bad english)
Even though I prefer Metallica's work, let's put things to order:
Soloing technique: Kirk > Dave, even though they both kind of suck in this area.
Composition of solos: Kirk > Dave.
Riff playing ability: Dave = James.
Difficulty of riffs: Dave > James.
Quality of riffs in general: Dave = James.
Front man: James > Dave (it is related to playing the guitar because it means being able to sing really well while playing, and James sounds better vocal wise while playing).
Soloing technique: Kirk > Dave ??
Composition of solos: Kirk > Dave ??
Riff playing ability: Dave = James ??
Quality of riffs in general: Dave = James ??
U can not have spoken serious! But anyway are opinions, not up to discussion!
VlaDuZa mind you daves riffs are way harder to play and sing at the same time
kirk just pissed coz dave told everybody he was a better guitar player than him.. and he knows it's true..
there are countless players better than both of them on this earth..........your point? i think kirk has played cooler melodies dave has no feel.......his leads are sterile
some agree with me,some not.. same as some agree with u, some not..to me dave/megadeth ryhthm playing is more tricky than metallica.. metallica more straight forward. Megadeth's chords has more variation yet metallica just keep on with normal power chords. metallica's rhythm s more about sound and feel. Megadeth is more technical.. Talking about the solos, although i also like kirk's work, i'm more into mustaine's.. there's a lot of feel in his solos.. (and he doesnt rely on wah..) :-) just my opinion..
riiiiiiiight!
u r Kirk Hammet's fanboy.. i dont blame u standing for your hero. But i think Dave is better than Kirk. Take Holy War for example, hear his rhythm in that song.. thats not a normal 'power chords' song. Try to play it. Face it.. Metallica's songs doesn't have a complicated chording like Megadeth's song. Thats the fact. But Metallica also have a bunch of very good nice songs. That is also a fact. (i only talked about rhythm skill. I'll talk about the solo skills later...) Megadeth=complicated tricky un-orthodox power chords. Metallica=normal 5th power chords plus deep palm muting. Both are gods of metal. No doubt about that. And Megadeth's songs doesn't have wah-wah.. Cheers! :-)
you mean the unpredictable pentatonic with unpredictable wahwah? Don't start to compare those guys solos..LOL please.. both of them are legends..and just stick to that.. and i don't call u a moron just for having that opinion.. u have the right to have an opinion.. :-)

Dave may have been an asshole, but he had every reason to be. While it's great that we ended up with two killer bands instead of one, sending him home on a bus at the last second was a chickenshit thing to do. As much as I like Kirk's playing, Dave should have at least been allowed to record his solos on Kill Em All.
+MetalPersonJ Listen to the EP with Dave playing the solos. It was horrible. Kirks execution is so much better. Dave may be a better guitarist but when it comes to the execution of solos, Hammet was cleaner and less sloppy.

@monokhem I didn't know a guy who plays power chords and open string fills for the most part and struggles to compose away from E minor ( James ) is a better guitar player than Mustaine. Thanks for showing why I shouldn't take you seriously.
@@Fektthis During his peak, I would say Hammett was every bit as good a lead guitarist as Mustaine was, just two different approaches and roles, both of them technically limited to blues pentatonics. Mustaine has his fair share of emotional and melodic solos and Hammett has his fair share of raw aggression. However, Mustaine destroys pretty much anyone from his time on rhythm within metal and rock, in terms of both chops and inventiveness. Also, Hammett is not half the overall musician Mustaine is.

Why? They've _always_ stayed true to their dream. They make the music they wanted to make. People accuse them of "selling out" when they change their style in any way at all (really, people have constantly accused them of selling out from the VERY beginning, even when Cliff was alive), but in reality they have never sold out. Just wanted to continue their dream of trying something new. An _actual_ sellout band is Nickelback. They've straight up said that they dont care about their music, they just make it solely because it sells. That has NEVER been the case with Metallica. They care solely about the music and their fans.
They're just 4 normal guys wearing casual clothes and playing music that they love. Nothing's really changed about them. The fact that they happened to gather a MASSIVE following isn't their fault lol

Metallica always did what they wanted with their music, ignoring what people said, they didn't sell out.
In the 90s, when they released Load/Reload, grunge and nu metal was trendy, but they released experimental hard rock/alternative albums. If they really sold out why didn't they did that?
Also, St. Anger isn't nu metal, if you are wondering. It's a thrashy album.

Dave came back with a fury vengeance like a Phoenix rising from the ashes.
Dave certainly has every right to feel how he does. He was kicked from a band due to his issues with drugs and alcohol, when they, themselves fought the very same struggle with addiction, and abuse. "Hey, it's all good, we get just as drunk, and trashed as you do, but we're gonna kick you out for it and go all self righteous about it ok? Oh, by the way, we're taking the credit, and royalties for your songs too. Kay bye!" Come on, guys.. Look, Don't get me wrong. Both Megadeth and Metallica are icons in thier own right, and both have shaped and influenced rock n roll today, but lets' get honest and put blame, and accountability where it lies.
You don't even know what happened clearly. And Metallica does give Dave his credit on Phantom Lord, Metal Militia, Jump In The Fire, The Four Horsemen, Ride The Lighting and The Call of Ktulu.
Isnt it funny dave got sober before james did
Tim Lynch dave never stayed sober
That's bull because Muistane did the same thing in his band.
people give Dave way to much credit for the start of Metallica and those songs but Dave knows cliff at that time was the only one who really new and understood music and with cliff they would of been a completely different band from the songs they played to the riffs they came up with . just listening to megadeath first few albums . Marty Freeman is what took megadeath to the next lever plus they had one of the most underrated bass players of all time and in my opinion Dave killed most if his bass riffs with his guitar playing . he had not really truly learned how to play with a bass player yet that all changed when Marty joined the band plus Dave took lesson to get better . people actually think mustang wrote all those song without the help of the other guys at all that's absurd .
Absurd. Peace Sells... changed the game. #WakeUpDead. And Rattlehead is a much better song for thrashing out than Whiplash. Dave's riffs have always been of a higher order than Metallica's riffs.
Anyone who has ever been shunned rejected and discarded knows and empathizes with Dave...I honestly believe Lars and James feel ashamed deep down...They know it wasn't right and now as men they are cheering Dave's success...Maybe not publicly but in their hearts.

@@tammysigmon853you talking about the timeline where they never kicked Dave out and cliff never died and they hired a third guitarist named Kirk... And then the world exploded from awesomeness overload.
I love how Cliff says that you don't put someone's picture on the album unless they're in the band.
Someone should have told Kiss that back in 1982 when they released Creatures of the Night and in 1985 when they released it with a different cover. Both covers had a lead guitarist who was not in the band when the album was recorded and released. The guitarist who was in the band didn't appear on any of the covers.
Hahaha, is that James in the background? "shoulda put a little picture, only wrote a little song" haha.
CLIFF BURTON R.I.P.
They kicked out Dave not only cause he had an alcohol problem, but because they knew he'd outshine them all, Dave wrote the best songs by metallica (he wrote "Mechanix" and "Jumping the fire" completely by himself) and taught James how to play. Thank god he got kicked out and made Megadeth, a band superior in every single way
not even the best songs on Kill em' All man. the award goes to The Four Horsemen and Hit the Lights. and Metallica ended up writing even better songs without Mustaine. (cough, cough, Fade to Black, Master of Puppets, One, Enter Sandman, and so on.........) either way, both bands are epic, and its going to stay like that.
matt jenks i'm 100% sure. to this day, no matter what crap people give them, they are still one of the biggest bands in the world.
metalupurazz1 four horseman is actualy stolen from dave that song was the original mecanix the verse from the bible in enter sandman was also daves idea and there has also been lots of other ideas in which where daves but hey daves pinky has mre talent thn all of metallica nd if metallica never fucked him off after kicking him out we wouldnt have songs like go to hell
cowboysfromhell1990 are you shitting me, Kirk wrote the riff in Enter Sandman when he was jamming in a hotel.
matt jenks that's your opinion, but saying that Mustaine wrote some of their biggest songs is so wrong.
I am in Castro Valley, Cliff's town. Long Live Bob Marshall of ABC Music. He was teacher for Sir Jimmy Martin of the Faith No More Spiritual Center.
September 27, 1986. That was my mother's 28th birthday. I was four years and two days old
This is it. There was major beef between James and Dave over who was fronting the band on stage.....go look at the old vids and you'll see they are both kinda fighting for the spotlight on the stage, both talking in between songs etc It certainly came to a head when Hetfield kicked Dave's dog and they had the punch up, but i'd say James was looking for any excuse to get rid of Dave anyway. The drinking thing is bullshit because they were all heavy drinkers.
I quit buying Metallica years ago I still buy Megadeth.
you bought super collider? unlucky dude.
I download Megadeth and burn CDs to give out to many people so they don't have to waste their money
John Walhan
nice.
"i still buy megadeth" come to think of it that doesn't even make sense.
The Chratheostic Pwner of Megadeth Fanboys dude really...?...and where the fuck has slayer been...?.....megadeth still make great albums...metallica are washed up has-beens...so your opinions are pretty much useless...
strongly agree! great album.
YES !!
Some of the stuff they said is pretty shitty, I'll be honest. The only way I forgive them is because they had genuine reasons to hate Dave. He was just a violent drunk
"no second chance?" Even though he said he quit but then came back
Dave was a way better guitarist than Kirk or James but no where near a better writer. Just because a song is complex doesn't make it good. Master of Puppets album is the best example. Great riffs but just even better arrangements on that album. Thank god they kicked Dave out or there would be no Megadeth. SLAYER!!!
i realised mustaine was a better writter than james right away,,, first megadeth album the song,,,LOOKING DOWN THE CROSS. Metallica,,,,,,,metallica will never write some deep, deep shit like that. GOOSEBUMPS thats what i got the first time i listen to that!!!
Omar Rodriguez fade to black
dave is a million times better songwriter, youre actually an idiot if you think that. dave has written more albums and more better albums too and wrote like 30% of metlalicas best music, and dont forget all the shit that held dave back like his drug overdose when he died and when the doctor told him hell never be able to play guitar again and then had neck surgery years later.. yeah, dave is better in every way shape and form
MTRredux As soon as he said "he can't play melodically" I realized he knew nothing about guitar lol. Then "his riffs are unmemorable" just cemented the truth. This guy has no idea about instruments XD
Edit: Though I agree on one thing, Kill Em All isn't that good but it does have some great songs.
monokhem Whatever helps you sleep at night snob
I always thought Dave wrote Call of kthulu from Ride the Lightning. The chords in Hangar 18 are the same exact chords from Call of Kthulu. Not saying he did write it but that song has Dave written all over it
Cliff was hilarious.
1st I love both bands but they treated Dave like shit and followed up by treating Jason the same way, they admitted it in some kind of monster. Who know, perhaps if Cliff had lived they might have treated him as bad down the road, booze and drugs screws up bands. As far as guitar goes Dave is a far more skilled player than James was but they both have their own styles and sounds. Let the attacks begin as I have attacked the guitar gods..lol
i know im way too late but dave was a violent drunk. and to be kicked out from metallica, you have to be one fucked bastard. which we can see dave was. ive seen countless shows and heard countless recordings of dave being absolutley face fucked on drugs.
I'm also very late but Dave was 1000x more of a dick than all of the members of Metallica combined. He deserved everything negative he got. It's not even up for debate, dave was a sack of shit back then.
guitar=dave
Ahh. Here is where I found you first. Then I found you on the Amazing Atheist video.
I almost forgot where I found you but now I know again.
its hard enough to tell who is actually speaking in the audio without the random faces and names playing in the video
James hetfeild said it himself that cliff burton in particular was scarred of dave mustaine. So if the "king"burton wanted mustaine out of metallica that's the way it was gonna be. I jumped of the cliff burton band wagon a long time ago and other people need to also.metallica had mustaines writing on their albums all the way through ride the lightning. The dynamic in that band changed when mustaine was fired and cliff died.which is evident when you listen to and justice for all. even the black album had lyrics and song titles that had been around since ride the lightning by james' own admission. then you have load, reload, and st. anger which im sorry to say all suck donkey balls.
+Timothy Strange Other people 'need to get off the Cliff Burton band wagon' because you say so? How about people make up their own minds what to think? And 1990s Metallica probably did suck balls, but then again, in my opinion at least, Megadeth were putting out shit in that era too.
+Soylent Green how about if you dont like what i have to say fuck off!
Timothy Strange ...Or better yet, if you are incapable of saying that makes you look like a fully developed human, then you say nothing at all.
This is a comments section shit for brains, go figure out what the fuck it is used for.
In my opinion (and I'm sure many others would agree) the first 3 metallica albums are their best work. People always attribute this to Cliff Burton playing bass on those albums but I think it has a lot more to do with the fact Dave Mustaine wrote a substantial amount of material for those records. Dave's style is heavy but also has a certain cool groove to it. Heavy but cool heavy if that makes sense. I reckon you can easily hear it in a lot of the riffs on those first 3 albums and he deserves a good chunk of the credit for why they are the best ones.
@doknero That's probably the smartest thing any Metallica fan has ever said. You need more thumbs up!
At the end of the day we all choose Dave mustaine no matter what.
Ask people 30 years ago and they would you were insane. Now he’s good but back then he was an insane drug addict, especially in 1988 when he made huge cash
You know the sad part here, is Megadeth's new record is a fucking masterpiece and Metallica is a faded star.
and yet The Black Album outsold Dystopia this year
Seriously I Farted record sales aren't a good indicator.
And White Christmas outsold Black Album this year.
TK-421 they're really good
I agree wit the previous comment. If they hadn't had kicked him out, then there wouldn't have been a Megadeth and thank God there is because they are so much better than Metallica.
Only Megadeth fans share your opinion. Everyone else however, doesn't.
"so much better" = "I like them better"
Said no one ever. Lmao the handful of Megadeth fans are the ONLY ones that say they're better than Metallica. Meanwhile the entire world loves Metallica.
Hit me up when Megadick plays a show with 500,000 people in attendance.
Ray Burton, is the coolest Dad ever.
@austin2460 What's his autobiography?
"Not being BIG and FANCY...just keep it that way."
Haha. Right, that's what happened.
To be honest they only became sell outs after cliff dead and that show that cliff was the heart of the band
The secondary Goon squad Oh fuck off with that bullshit, so Cliff would say "no guys, lets not tour the world, lets just continue to tour around few countries and local bars, and stay small, and make same generic album everytime (cough Slayer cough)..." No, he wouldn't. Everyone matures, evolves, and real musicians change their style from time to time, if every single band listened to fanboys to stay the same, we wouldn't have alot of amazing songs! I agree, that doesn't always succed, but in Metallica's case, they are nailing it with every album imo
Buraz93
No they aren't "nailing it with every album". Not even close. They nailed it with 3 albums. That's their whole legacy. 3 good albums from a career spanning 4 decades now.
Sager and poo
Because of the way people spoke about him I had the utmost respect for Cliff, and then he opened his mouth. All that respect tanked with this one video.
word
What does he says? im spanish and i speak english but it sounds so bad...
+acc 320 basically he's discrediting Megadeth and Dave because Dave was a little butt hurt about being thrown from Metallica.
+Kisha Shindo Well, i think he said this because the rivalry of the bands at this time. Dave also has some songs talking about Metallica , and not in a good way...
Dont think im accusing Megadeth. those things are said in a moment of rage or maybe because they wanted to discredit the other.
And at last... if someone loses the respect to a fucking legend as Cliff Burton was, because a children fight, this is a stupidity
+acc 320 Doesn't matter if he's a legend, so was Axl Rose and I lost almost all of my respect for him too. It was just the way people painted Cliff and then see this just ruined the good image I had of him.
fuck.... its kinda electric to even see a video of Cliff talking
@MrGRAM6 and i forgot the credits of the co writting of ride the lightning and the call of ktulu
