Lars is smart. There’s a reason he has always done most of the interviews. He was also right about Napster. 20 years later the business of selling music is dead. Fans who don’t play don’t care, but, the fact is these guys and MANY others don’t bother making records anymore and that’s the real tragedy
Wow. He is so articulate in answering the questions. Respect that. Lars is the real reason why metallic is able to carry on playing this long. He brings so much sense to bear on all the other band members.
Lars is great, I mean all the negative things people say about him can only be traced to music. He as a person is not a bad guy at all. I mean we aren't perfect either right
Lars is the one who's paying the price with his body..so much respect. They lived the whole rock lifestyle, now they literally live to play. Pure dedication and love!
People criticize, me included when i was younger before i had others experience. I mean , i always defended Lars on what he did on thoses legendary albums and he was indeed a great drummer in albums and in Live. I could be disappointed with his low key moments after that. That said , im happy he s got his fire and dedication back since the 3 last years. But people have to realize Lars had a lot of physical issues especially after the Black album load reload era thing. But the black album tour, he was playing very well, but see how he hits and stuff, play like that , for 3 hours , each night for touring 3 years straight. Ligament problems, Drugs problems, shoulders tore up. So now , i understand, i had a Dystonia 3 years ago. Its a tough shit to deal with, even mentally. I don't excuse him, but im very happy he refound some of his level nowadays, despite the struggles
Some body I love the fact that tattooed people claim they don’t judge non tattooed people but when you tell them you have no tattoos they get all worked up... what’s wrong with normal skin
Hey, get tattoos. Skulls. Roses. Mechanical parts. Getting what everyone else gets is the greatest way to show you individualism and non conformity man. This dude walking around with bare skin whilst being in a band? Who the hell does he think he is? Eh? By the way, I have started chewing match sticks to be more like myself. And him. ....
@Alexander R Williams Hey I'm an internet troll I am actually fine with what ever people want to do. I have many friends and acquaintances all tatted back
I like the fact that Lars acknowledged it's important to maintain mental and physical health! A major factor why Metallica stays solid and do the best live performances up to this date! They create impressive legacy as a band, team, artists. Hands down.
That's one of the big ones for me too. It's just not interesting anymore. It doesn't make you a "rebel" or "cool" or whatever. It's just a tattoo. I like them. Seen many cool ones. And if it's meaningful for the person that has them, then great. For me though...I don't put bumper stickers on a Ferrari.
Straw Man interesting how things change.. now this days you have to not have tattoos to be different, while before you wanted to have a tattoo to be different..

Ive been in plenty of bands and at 37 I still have no tats. Usually im the only one in the band with no tats. i just dont want someone marking me up with permanent ink.
If you say so. I have no problem with tats, plenty of my friends have them, they are just not for me. Also, Im not in a band currently numb nuts, and my mom has been dead for 15 years. Good job showing your whole ass in a single post.
Exactly you are right i loved Metallica and when i was in my 15-25's i really want to be lars he was my hero loved his music and drums very basic but in perfect time, i agree you don't need to have 1000 piercings or tatto's to be a real Rockstar he kicked ass back and still kicking please don't disrespect Lars, as a matter of fact we now have shitty music thanks to napster at the end he was right. We people dissposed Rockstars like nothing, time moves on for everyone of course Lars knows he can't play like a teenager anymore he i'm sure feels bad about it. So i wish Dimebag was here still playing with Fucking Pantera and Phil with his now shitty voice and all the band mates fat and old but i will be more then happy to pay for a concert and yo hear them again Even if the are slow and old, by the way i will see them un Sandy Fucking ego and i will enjoy the moment i am 37 now.
iBallisticPancankes - You must be young... in the 90s, Metallica was just the shit! For me, as I'd say a lot of other people, came when Lars starting throwing MAJOR temper tantrums that people were stealing his music from the internet. Lars was the biggest, most childish spearhead of this whining. Even though, I've bought their music on: 1. LP (aka vinyl, aka record) 2. Cassette 3. CD 4. And now MP3 again? How many times should he get paid for the same songs? Is $80M net worth not good enough for him? He really needs another $20 buck from me??
So many triggered people on both side of the argument. Tattoos arent even about conformity or non conformity anymore. Typically someone who gets a tattoo now a days doesn't say "im gonna get this tat so i can be unique and different!" Its not even an thought. Some people like the way it looks and others dont. Simple as that
Mr. sting ray Thank you!! Yes! When I get mine I know exactly what I want and why I want it. I've never just went ans got one just to do it. I've thought about mine for awhile. I have 13 and plan on more.
Correct. That line is just one of many cliche anti tattoo lines like "what about when you're old?" as if everyone without tattoos looks amazing when old and wrinkly
@@piro2k Maybe it's because you're a fucking pussy? That would be my guess after reading your little article. If you're a fucking pussy , you'll be a fucking pussy in 1820 or 2020.
I first met Lars in San Francisco when they came up to play often before moving up to the Bay Area from SoCal and despite all the hate and the love for the guy, he remains one of the hardest working players in the business.
Being in one of the biggest bands to ever roam te planet and at the same time being this down to earth... wow!!! Lars deserves all the credit, what an amazing guy. Also very cool to see how conscious and well-planned every decision behind the band actually is. Awesome interview.
I love Lars' interviews. I have been following them since 1986 and he has always been pretty informative and open about the band and inside or "behind the curtain" info. AND, he is so freaking funny! Great since of humor. "Why don't you eat coal?" Cracks me up!! ;-)
TheQueenSpider dangerous thing...is that people are in control of traditions...and those in control of them...normally don't follow them...but it is a way to kind of play Simon says with the people without the people realising it...that is a very dangerous thing since we're u aware if that fact...
J Guy too me tattoos are for the people that arent getting the attention their looking for so they gotta start drawing on themselves.. kind of lame if u ask me
TheQueenSpider I never looked at it like that I always wanted to have a tattoo but never had the money to food is more important than a tattoo in my opinion but I have always felt uncomfortable that I didn't have tattoos because every one I know has them I've always been proud of being different never dressing a trend I was using different colours in my hair way before it was a trend the problem with tattoos today a few people get them and don't think about the meaning of the tattoo people who have tattoos aren't trying to prove something to most people a tattoo has real meaning getting though hard times a memory of a loved one my first tattoo would be of my dog who saved my life when my ex husband tried to kill me he also helped me through depression once he's gone I want something I can look down at when ever and where ever I want especially when I am having a hard time
I don't have any ink on me but there is a differance between tattoos and tattoos, it's like comparing a 3 year olds painting in kindergarden vs Mona Lisa, two very different things but at the end of the day both are paint on a piece of paper.
Well you seem like a person who has learn to make smart decisions. You know what you are not good at... but I think your gut knows you’ll regret it, which might be the case for you. I’m older now, and what I thought was soooooooohhhh cool on a 21 year old has had two effects on me. 1. I acted too young for too long and passed on some grown up decisions simply because I was “too hard”, then once I got older the other effect, 2. I was now too old to grow up and get those better grown up jobs now that I wanted to give up the “hard” image in my head. Not blaming my tattoo, but for me it was a huge mistake for me. I still like the tattoo, just not what I let it do to my outlook on life. Just my experience.

Maybe you didn't know this but for people that were listening to them already in 90-91 he was already balding since back in the day, we could already see his bald spot on the forehead
Lars doesn't have tattoos because he's a real man; he has skill and talent to attract attention, he doesn't need to alter his appearance to get very shallow, short term attention.
Mad props to Lars(and Metallica) for changing up their set list while they're on tour to keep touring fans happy! I didn't know that. I've seen them twice (in Denver) and they kicked ass each time!
My dad was born in 1934 and him growing up in the 40s and 50s says that anybody that had a tattoo back in that time was considered a criminal or someone of low morals
I mean, my grandpa served in the army sometime in the 40's or 50's, and has ONE on his right arm, but has NEVER had the ink done-up (maintained it), and it was a thing he got because he was in the service. As I said in my comment (that wasn't a reply to anyone else, just a comment on the video), I can understand veterans/marines and sailors that get tattoos. Getting them just because "it's art" or as a fashion anymore, is just stupid as hell.
I think soldiers had them as their profession was being a badass but at the same time especially then they were very respected people. Back then no one really saw soldiers as low lives since they selflessly served their country. That is the way it should be with our soldiers now.
I am 48 and have several tattoos. Lars' remark about just eat coal is spot on for those who don't have them. There's a Dr. Seuss cartoon that talks about just be yourself and not follow trends. I get that, but I didn't get tattoos for anybody else but me. I get wierd looks from people sometimes. That's okay. I put myself in that situation. 20 years ago I would have been upset about it but now I don't care what people think. My wife doesn't have tattoos but will help me sometimes on designs for the next one. Not liking tattoos is cool, but having them is cool too. Just don't judge a book by the cover. Peace out folks. ☺
I'm 48 , no tattoos. Since 25 been looking like Michelangelo David statute. Now people give me weird looks like how come your body has no any ink ? As Nobody cares if you have tattoos
Metallica has always been my favorite band . I enjoy following news about them. I think it's great how they tour now in spurts. Health & family is important.
I've never liked the idea of having something permanently marked on me - like a brand. I have lots of music and quirky/ funny tee shirts or hats and that's a nice temporary display on me. Skyrim shirt. Overkill shirt. Pushead shirt. I may get a reaction sometimes, but I can change it out tomorrow for something else...
Well it has become just a fashionable thing to have. As far as I can tell it has nothing to do with being "alternative" anymore... Just like smoking weed. At least in Canada...
I remember Ozzy telling his son, if you want to be different, dont get any tattoos! Man was he right on the mark. Us rockers (musicians) from the 80's know, we were different with tattoos. We were the rockers. All the others just didn't get tattoos. Now I just laugh when I see this craze of tattoos on everyone.

Agent Orange.....?! Living in Darkness.....Immense! Yes, tattoos used to be something that belonged to the sub-culture, people living on the edge, but now everyone and his granny is tattooed from top to bottom and it has become mainstream and frankly, a bit cheap and chavvy. I feel sorry for the real sub-culture that have earned their stripes...so to speak....I used to know by a persons tattoos that they had a good connection to music...but....not anymore....Yep, I sound a bit elitist on that point. It just annoys me. 😬🤐
Finally a decent statement without the postee making a statement identifying themselves to metallica or Lars. I guess you just come to expect it with this particular fanbase
Guess this interviewer has never heard of Iron Maiden? Still selling out Stadiums world wide and even longer in the tooth than Metallica. Of course, I hope BOTH bands keep doing it for a long time to come!
Or Cannibal Corpse, those fuckers been touring almost non-stop for 30 years now no matter what, even with what happened to them recently with Pat O'Brien's crazy, whatever the hell that was about, a meltdown i guess, they didn't cancel and are headlining the Decibel tour starting this Sunday in San Antonio, not packing big stadiums but still out there playing heavy shit and close to same age as the guys in Metallica, they're all pushing 50! so it's not "uncharted" territory Sir
@@fabricio2467 what are you talking about they sell out 20-40k person shows regularly across the US. Worldwide it's even crazier. Metal bands outside the US play gigantic shows all the time
I've always enjoyed watching interviews of Lars this dude is always crack me up is quite the character in no matter how you feel about Metallica he's a pretty epic drummer.
Some people think similarly to me in that they love the idea of tattoos BUT get bored with things quickly. I don't like to have the same windows wallpaper for more than a few days. Getting a tattoo no matter how cool would eventually bore me and I would want a change just not possible with tattoos. If they could be reliably and thoroughly removed without issue sure but with the current tech? Nah id be afraid of getting bored with them and then resentful.
I give props to Metallica for going this long as one of the foundations of metal. Still, considering Maiden are all around retirement age and still CRUSHING at the same speed, and in the same key, unbelievably, they are the benchmark of long-lasting dedication. I saw them a week ago, and aside from a few wrinkles and Bruce's grey hair, time hasn't slowed them down at all. Nicko is 67, for God's sake.
I’m not even a Maiden fan, but I saw them at MSG a few years back and was simply blown away. Those guys rocked harder than any band I have ever seen that operates anywhere near that scale.
No, Lars. The Who with Keith Moon was the most energetic and physical band ever and always will be. There's no way that they could perform the same way as they got older. Metallica for MOP was hands down the most intense concert I got to see, though.
absolutely right I've never been a fan of tattoos but alot of these people take it out of hand... on their hands on their face.. it has nothing to do with music but people assume good musicians have a million tattoos all bs... some of the greatest rock stars in history had no tattoos... Jimmy Hendrix Jim Morrison
Tattoos or "poser art" didn't really come into prospective until the late 90's with rock. A lot of the "nu metal" bands are covered in them. Why? Who the fuck knows. Seems today everybody is a Jonny bad ass and nothing screams bad ass like a bunch of tats lmao. I hate them. I think there're a fucking joke. And what's up with these woman who get their tits tattooed? Fucking throw up in my mouth with that shit. Tattoos with always be poser art to me.
LightningBrigade, that was a big joke as well. Should have been done in 1993 when MK 2 reformed again and Lordy was still there. Gillan now manipulated Morse/Airey line up into playing at the event while they never were eglible for the award.
You see, in The Late Late Show with Jimmy Kimmel, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich, and Robert Trujillo had a discussion with Jimmy Kimmel about Chester who died in 2017 one by one. It was very sad, but a good memmorable story. (I totally forgot to write "Bennington" in the reply when I was explaining that). I won't go on about him anymore beacuse it is time to move on
Would you begrudge Vince Niel for having his dead daughters name on his chest? One example from millions. For most people tattoos are a memory or a bonding experience. Even if it's not to commemorate something what's wrong with having a piece of art that nobody can take from you? Some people's identities are directly tied to the story imbedded in their skin. I love your judgmental nature thought. It reminds me why I love tattoos.
I want to get the Metallica “M” small on my upper arm as a tattoo. Could be easily covered by a shirt. Metallica and Lars is the reason I wanted to pursue music and playing the drums, and I feel like showing that and having Metallica with me at all times will show what shaped me to be me
Ozzy once said that people used to get tattoos to be different and stand out. He went on to say that if you want to be different today...dont get any tattoos
And that's what it is today or isn't it? Especially when you are a musician.. If you don't have tattoos, you are always someone who is not a 'true' musician I think 😂
Many years ago, I went to play at a heavy metal venue. I wore a shirt with tie. When a punk-ass tattooed, stinky rocker threatened to smash my face in because of my tie, I said: "Angus Young wears a tie. Would you want to smash his face in?" He then retreated with a "guess not". My buddies and I that play or listen to heavy metal don't have any tattoos. Lars' first take on tattoos was correct. He's smart.
I have been a Metallica fan for 30 years and I just don't understand the hate for Lars. Yes Jame who is my favorite musician ever is the down to Earth guy but Lars seems extremely cool.
@@MrJSpicoli Yeah I know, everyone was so mad because they couldn't steal people's property. That is a bad reason to hate someone. It's like hating the Walmart security guard for stopping people from shoplifting.
Cause he really does suck at drumming live. And people have hated him since he tried to sue his own fans. He wanted every penny he could get. Southpark said it best. People who downloaded his music really hurt him. He had to wait a whole extra month to have his gold and diamond plated pool installed. The horror. He could have been a hero and learned to go with the future of music and figure out a way to make money from the internet back then but instead he tried to make sure he got every penny from anyone who wants to listen to Metallica. But also he's a hypocrite cause he had said in the past that he was a big proponent of tape trading back in the day and thats not far from what he got mad about. I be more understanding of it if they were a band just starting out and needed the money for every album sale to get the career going. But he had already made tens of millions by that point. Just showed him to be greedy. But seriously he is always messing up songs live. He is always not on time and sometimes even misses whole parts of songs or will even play wrong song. I just dont think he cares anymore. I think James is the only one who still loves it, Rob just goes with whatever, Kirk looks like he is ready to retire and like I said Lars doesnt care he just wants the checks that come after every show.
@@thomasc.5219 if you think trading mixed tapes that you physically had to make is the same as downloading by millions of people with the click of a button I need to smoke what you are. Also imagine a musician wanting to be paid for the music they create, how dare he even though most musicians were behind them. As far as his drumming well he has always been underated because he did do some of the crazy things that Dave Lombardo did who was incredible also. I watch live videos of them playing now and it sounds good to me. Millions of people come to watch them play live so I guess they like it.
@@JC-bl9bo in all honesty and technical terms, clicking on a youtube music video is exactly the same. Downloads the video as well as the audio and screams to ban youtube aren't going to go very far. So the issues raised are probably just a red herring to what is the true motivation. Monopolies on distributed content raises the question of what choice do I have when it comes to my listening preferences? Vinyl was taken away, everything digitized, personal players were put on the market to purchase individual songs for your earbuds. So what happened to the days when we all could get together and share an album in a group? Well, just sit and text all day on our data networks, no need to assemble and have social skills unless its at a show to listen. Much more was going on at that time then someone downloaded a song. No different than a DJ playing it to me over the radio minus the commercial.
I do not have any tattoos but I can see why people would want certain ones. I think that all these girls getting what's become known as the "Tramp stamp" really says a lot about the women who get them. A) They don't mind being referenced as or thought of as a tramp. B) They would jump off the bridge if their friends did it. Personally I don't care if someone has a Tattoo or not, but at the same time I think when people go overboard, such as Motley Crue members did, it becomes ugly. I saw a woman with this beautiful bird tattoo that covered her entire back! While the artwork was perfect and gorgeous, I did think that it makes no sense to get a tattoo like that because you the wearer of it never get to see it. I know that Lars gets a lot of hate but there is something about him that I like. People are still mad at him about the whole Napster fiasco and he, like Gene Simmons, is very vocal about their disapproval of all this downloading music stuff. So to anyone who gets angry with people complaining about this stuff let's try an experiment shall we? You go to work next week, you really bust your ass and do the absolute best job you can possibly do and at the end of the week when you open the envelope that contains your check there will just be a critique of your work for that week. Let's try that and see if you like not getting paid for doing your job. Artists spend a lot of time and effort into creating their music, or their painting or whatever it is they do. Why shouldn't they be paid for it? Why should you or I be able to download and entire album free of charge?
Wow dude! I completely agree with everything you said in your comment. I've been saying that a lot about the Napster deal, they gotta get paid for their hard work.
And people are free to steal ANYTHING from ANYONE at ANYTIME, its your choice if you want to steal and the option should remain open. I don't see people bitching about stolen drills but it still goes on and it SHOULD. To me it's your choice, just the same as if you found the record in a store, you could steal it or buy it, it's your choice.
@@mouthpee WTF, that's a ridiculous argument. Sure, you can TRY to steal it--and risk getting caught and busted. Sure, go for it, plenty of torrent sites out there to rip things off from. It's a moral/ethical choice to steal but that doesn't mean it should intentionally be easy to do so, that's just lame. Metallica's case against Napster was valid--they got bad press for it but that doesn't mean they were wrong. The court of popular opinion is not truth or justice. It's just opinions from mostly uninformed hypocrites. But hey, leave your car and home unlocked all the time, don't worry about it if somebody steals your stuff--it's their choice, right, and you're perfectly fine with that? /smh
Most 80's thrashers aren't covered head to toe in tats. It was just a different time. Tattoo's weren't trendy like they are now. In fact they were considered monstrously taboo. The only people who got tattoos back in the old days were like biker outlaws, and even then, they only had like 1 or 2 small ones, tops.
I have a tattoo but I do regret it. haha If you really want to be original, don't get tattoos or do and spend a looooong time thinking about what you wanna get. And I think Lars was right in the whole download situation all those years ago.
D A D A that is the most decent and nice comment I read on UA-cam for years, especially on a video about Lars. The world would be a better place with more people like you. Thank you for being here. About tats, i know so many girls in the process of getting more and more of them, and they're all before 30, one of them started at 16, is now 23. I wanted to get tats when I was younger, but now I would regret it too. Can't talk any of them out of it though, but I'm very curious to see what all of them will say 10-20 years from now.
Thank you for that comment. I always though of it as he was defending the music industry and his own work by going against napster and downloading. Not going to lie, when I was younger I did download some music but stopped pretty quickly since I knew it was wrong. Since then I have only bought albums. I mean, youtube is fantastic for finding music you don't know about. And if you like it go out and buy the album! And Lars is a very good drummer. I'm not a big Metallica fan or anything but I love them as people and I love the fact that they are still here. So, all my respect to them. Yeah, I found that you can't talk many people out of getting a tat. Had buddies that got tattoes in their faces. Have not talked to them in years but would love to know if they still think it was a good ideá. Have a good one, my friend!
Lars isn't a technical drummer, but it's his simple and hard hitting style which made Metallica memorable and great. I buy physical copies of music whenever it's possible too. If you want to find out more about how downloading influenced the music industry, listen to some interviews with Gene Simmons. The guy is a real asshole sometimes, but he really hits home with what he says about the topic. Downloading didn't affect profits of artists which were already established, as much as it hit small and underground bands. There isn't going to be another Metallica, Guns'N'Roses or Nirvana. We're going to be stuck with corporate products like Bieber instead.
Nobody ever mentions how well Lars has aged. Besides the balding, he basically looks the same as he did at 19. Then again his father is like 90 and still doing well so it must be the genes as well as keeping himself in good shape with all the running he does.
I'm not a HUGE Metallica fan. I listened the hell out of their older stuff and I'm definitely a fan. But, I've gotta be honest.... most of the discussions I've had about Metallica, I pretty much covered the "ripping on Lars" base. Especially after seeing Some Kind of Monster, in which he really came off to me as a total douche. But I found him to be very likable, very humble, and very interesting in this interview, which is nice to see. I also happen to share his enthusiasm for not getting tattoos. I have none as well. I've always been one to see through the facades we all have, whether it be tattoos, hair styles, clothes, piercings, make up, whatever... and not let any of it sway me when it comes to seeing the actual person underneath all of that. All that stuff doesn't really matter when it really comes down to it. If you like tattoos, get 'em. If you don't... don't. For me personally, it's not that I don't like tattoos- it's that I would almost certainly get sick of seeing whatever it was that was drawn on my body, no matter how well it was done or how much I loved it at the time. 10 years... 20 years later... I know I would wish I had never done that. So I never did.
Wow. Everyone on here trashing people who happen to have tattoos. Calm down, it’s a choice, you don’t need to like them and you also don’t need to cry about them either.
THANK YOU. Exactly what I'm saying. Just let people live their lives. Who cares either way. You want them or you dont. I'm so tired of seeing all these people bash girls with tattoos for being messed up in the head, a slut, or somebody who wants attention who wants to conform with the cool kids. They generalize and it's annoying. They never stop and think that maybe they just liked it and wanted to get one. They also say how everyone with a tattoo regrets it. That's not true. Only people who get tattoos on a whim who have no meaning or story for their tattoo regret it. Most people with them get artwork done because it means a lot to them. Something to always see and remember. People are so ignorant anymore its ridiculous.
Jean Wilconsin - We have to look at them and they look like shit. I thought I grew up tough. I can't believe how many self-loathing motherfuckers there are on the streets.
showtime951 the fact how someone else looks makes you feel this way shows self loathing on your part. Also not sure why you’re bringing toughness into this. For some reason people think others get tattoos to be tough? Stop thinking too hard pal
@@timothylarkin4916 - Thank you for dedicating some of your valuable time to me and my issues. I appreciate your keen overview and respect your learned analysis. Although subjective, I wouldn't describe myself as self-loathing in general. That's about normal, isn't it? .......Isn't it? But, you still did pretty good. Thank you once again for your thoughts and insight. Let me know when office hours become available for appointment. People with tattoos can be so sensitive. Had a week-long argument with someone on YT just because I answered the question Lars was asked with "In my time, tattoos were for sailors". Ooooh! How could I say something that hateful and intolerant? Didn't help that I said a dozen times that it was a joke and my best buddies are tattoo artists. I just don't get tattoos for being scared of regretting it.
I'll tell you why I don't have any tattoos....because I don't want anyone drawing on me. I never liked it when someone marked on me as a kid and I don't want anyone marking on me now. I have seen some cool looking art as tattoos but wouldn't want it on my arm or back or calf or anywhere on me. .
I don't see what the big deal is, I know people with tattoos, I know people without tattoos. It's just like getting your ears pierced. It's not a big deal and I don't see why people have such strong feelings over something so small.
@David Mason people don't "ruin their looks" when they get tattoos and it's not gross. It's just something people do, and their isn't anything wrong with it. It's a personal choice. You can choose to have them, you can choose not to have them. You shouldn't judge people on any aspect of their physical appearance.
HAHHAHA I love his reasons on why he's not getting a tattoo, simply true! I'd love to see another interview with Lars, nice perspective and such good vibes!
What a work horse! He's right about the rotator cuff and it's a wonder he's not developed tennis or golfer's elbow or other joint issues. I used to not like hearing him speak but he makes sense to me now, even in old interviews I realize how important he has become in Metallica and music. Although I probably wouldn't get along with Lars for 24 hours I see why Hetfield has respected his input for 35 years.
That's what happens when you have to worry about pussy feelings getting hurt over opinions. I'd be just as annoyed as he probably was, having to correct myself to please random sissies.
I've never understood where all the hate towards Lars comes from. I mean everyone is entitled to their own opinion but this man is the sole reason why I got into drumming. I'm 21 so I never got to see Metallica in their heyday, however, my father raised me on them and I idolize all of them. Listening to their music and his drumming just takes me to another place, including their new music. Seeing the energy they put out in their records and their live shows at their age is just outstanding. Just my opinion.
People go hard on Lars because of the Napster thing and because he's a bad drummer nowadays. Some people say he's a terrible person/has a bad personality. I actually respect him for standing his ground against illegal downloads and he never came across as a bad person. The only thing is that he got lazy and he doesn't play nearly as well as he should be able to.

Lars is smart. There’s a reason he has always done most of the interviews. He was also right about Napster. 20 years later the business of selling music is dead. Fans who don’t play don’t care, but, the fact is these guys and MANY others don’t bother making records anymore and that’s the real tragedy

I like the fact that Lars acknowledged it's important to maintain mental and physical health! A major factor why Metallica stays solid and do the best live performances up to this date! They create impressive legacy as a band, team, artists. Hands down.
Considering where he comes from thats not surprising
I don't have tattoos because I like to be different.

That's one of the big ones for me too. It's just not interesting anymore. It doesn't make you a "rebel" or "cool" or whatever. It's just a tattoo. I like them. Seen many cool ones.

He's obviously an important asset to the band, for several reasons and he's a legend. I like his interviews.
iBallisticPancankes - You must be young... in the 90s, Metallica was just the shit!
For me, as I'd say a lot of other people, came when Lars starting throwing MAJOR temper tantrums that people were stealing his music from the internet. Lars was the biggest, most childish spearhead of this whining.
Even though, I've bought their music on:
1. LP (aka vinyl, aka record)
2. Cassette
3. CD
4. And now MP3 again?
How many times should he get paid for the same songs? Is $80M net worth not good enough for him? He really needs another $20 buck from me??
*cough, cough* metal *cough, cough*
So many triggered people on both side of the argument. Tattoos arent even about conformity or non conformity anymore. Typically someone who gets a tattoo now a days doesn't say "im gonna get this tat so i can be unique and different!" Its not even an thought. Some people like the way it looks and others dont. Simple as that
Mr. sting ray Thank you!! Yes! When I get mine I know exactly what I want and why I want it. I've never just went ans got one just to do it. I've thought about mine for awhile. I have 13 and plan on more.

These days NOT having a tattoo is a sign of originality. Tattoos have become a symbol of conformity.
TheQueenSpider dangerous thing...is that people are in control of traditions...and those in control of them...normally don't follow them...but it is a way to kind of play Simon says with the people without the people realising it...that is a very dangerous thing since we're u aware if that fact...
TheQueenSpider to me tattoos are for the people that need to try too hard.. theyre trying to make up for something
Why I don't have any tattoo's? Because I suck at making permanent decisions.

trustobey1016 "oh fuck, what have I done"

In my country that was during 70-90 😁
I think soldiers had them as their profession was being a badass but at the same time especially then they were very respected people. Back then no one really saw soldiers as low lives since they selflessly served their country. That is the way it should be with our soldiers now.
social norms change over the years

I am 48 and have several tattoos. Lars' remark about just eat coal is spot on for those who don't have them. There's a Dr. Seuss cartoon that talks about just be yourself and not follow trends. I put myself in that situation. 20 years ago I would have been upset about it but now I don't care what people think. Great interview with Lars Ulrich, thanks.

He's smart.
He replaces spaces inbeetween his words with "um" lol.🎸
Lars answered that questions perfectly. His a very smart band member and founder .
I have been a Metallica fan for 30 years and I just don't understand the hate for Lars. Yes Jame who is my favorite musician ever is the down to Earth guy but Lars seems extremely cool.
Look up the Napster thing
Interviewer: Hi Lars
Lars: Um, Um um um um
I have a tattoo but I do regret it. haha
If you really want to be original, don't get tattoos or do and spend a looooong time thinking about what you wanna get.

Is not the same bro
good point
Nobody ever mentions how well Lars has aged. Besides the balding, he basically looks the same as he did at 19. Then again his father is like 90 and still doing well so it must be the genes as well as keeping himself in good shape with all the running he does.
I just got a tattoo that pays homage to Metallica’s “Of Wolf And Man”🤟
I'm not a HUGE Metallica fan.

We have to look at them and they look like shit.

Thank you for dedicating some of your valuable time to me and my issues. I appreciate your keen overview and respect your learned analysis.
Although subjective, I wouldn't describe myself as self-loathing in general. On average while awake, my self-hatred, feelings of worthlessness, and/or "Where the hell did my dreams go?", don't pop into my head more than 6-10 times/hour. That's about normal, isn't it? .......Isn't it?
But, you still did pretty good. Thank you once again for your thoughts and insight. Let me know when office hours become available for appointment. My best.
*superblonde* Hint: in my time, tattoos actually weren't just for sailors. Convicts had some too.
Still didn't get the joke now, did you?
I'll tell you why I don't have any tattoos....because I don't want anyone drawing on me.
I never liked it when someone marked on me as a kid and I don't want anyone marking on me now.
I have seen some cool looking art as tattoos but wouldn't want it on my arm or back or calf or anywhere on me. .
I don't see what the big deal is, I know people with tattoos, I know people without tattoos. It's just like getting your ears pierced. It's not a big deal and I don't see why people have such strong feelings over something so small.
There’s no problem with asking.
@David Mason people don't "ruin their looks" when they get tattoos and it's not gross. It's just something people do, and their isn't anything wrong with it. It's a personal choice. You can choose to have them, you can choose not to have them. You shouldn't judge people on any aspect of their physical appearance.
Respect to you Lars. Very well said brother.
Don"t know why people hate Lars. He was a metal fan who made Metallica what they are. He's also aged well mentally.
This Man.... Is A Legend🙏 What A "Drummer" In My Opinion The BEST🙌🙌 HAIL HAIL METALLICA 🤟🤟🤟
He still has a little bit of a Danish accent.
Never saw an image that looked so good that I said to myself; "That image needs to be engraved in my skin for the rest of my life."
Although I probably wouldn't get along with Lars for 24 hours I see why Hetfield has respected his input for 35 years.
lol Lars fucked up on that tattoo answer. At 12:55 he's just like thinking ah shit what did I just say
Jeff Myron Right! I thought how he answered by comparing it to being asked if he would "jump off the empire state building or eat coal" lol
That's what happens when you have to worry about pussy feelings getting hurt over opinions. I'd be just as annoyed as he probably was, having to correct myself to please random sissies.
James Goad LMAO..
Right, because you cant even have your own opinion these days. Some group of weak willed cunts will be offended. Even if its the truth!
is this the real Jim Goad?
Because he doesn't want a bunch of ink filtering through his body.
dude get rid of the toothpick!!..but I love his response about tattoos...don't have any myself..two thumbs up!!
@@Walamonga1313 I can respect that.
Great honest answer about tattoos. No need to apologize
