- "G.O.A.T." - Polyphia
Clay’s Meinl Cymbals setup from left to right, if sitting behind the kit, is as follows:
12” Classics Custom Trash Stack
14” Pure Alloy Medium Hihats
10” Pure Alloy Splash
18” Byzance Extra Dry Dual Crash
8”/10” GenerationX Electro Stack
18” Pure Alloy Medium Crash
21” Byzance Dark Ride
Artist Concept Model Matt Garstka Fat Stack
20” Byzance Traditional Medium Crash
20” Byzance Vintage Equilibrium China
As a guitarist, I must say.... This man is the reason this track is so legit.
agree. he carries the band in GOAT
Agreed agreed. Gotta pick saucy for G.O.A.T status guitar. And bad for G.O.A.T status band.
get goosebumps every time from the drums at the very end when it all crescendos
The perfect accentuation he does with the bass is, what makes the feel of the song. Guitar is great but the vibes is the rhythm here.
That bass line slaps. Guess bassists aren't that boring hahaha jk
This is better than that time when He turned water into wine...
Best comment ever
😂😂😂
He turned drums into lsd
Lmao!!
LMAOOOO
I love how his parts are meant to perfectly complement the rest of the music, like it’s not just a set groove the whole time. He’s more of a percussionist than just a drummer, which is awesome
So true...
If your not a percussionists in this day n age, you might as well join a Beatles cover band
Clay is probably one of the best players you can choose to sponsor and demo your cymbals.
He plays more cymbals than drums.
Great vid!!
This title belongs to matt halpern☝🏻😂😂...when a cymbal isnt moving...hit it 😂😅
Tastefully I might add, no clutter just enough 👍
Didn’t know aquaman could drum
Edit: Five years and 5.6K likes later; never thought this would have blown up 😂 thx y’all
Damnit!! My thoughts exactly! 😂
*Jesus
@@dalysbusch6552 Waaaaa, killer joke
Well his name is Clay Aquaman
I came to the comments just see if there was this comment. Haha
The little stick "clap" at 2:45 is just too fucking cool
Yo I saw that and was just stuck and had to rewind it like 3 times just to make sure he did that! This dude is fresh as fuck.
I hear the stick snap and immediately recognized the sound. He was just showing off
@@Gvaz if i was that good id show off too
Holy shit I didn’t even see that, the talent in this song is admirable and this drummer is so good he almost looks bored.
what's even more impressive is he isn't even doing it to show off, if you notice in the studio version you don't hear it, there is a hang in the percussion and that is his way of keeping time. the composition of this is so tight that it fits right in though. like it's supposed to be there.
2:43 that clap with the drumsticks tho. Pure perfection
Just to show he's a fucking beast with rythym
Necroing this comment but the most replayed part of the video. Love it. Love that everyone had to go back to it.
Yes thank you for noticing that too 😩😩 fucking amazing drummer forsure
2:44 *click* was very satisfying for some reason XD
I watched that and imediatly hit replay lol
@@ThisIsDumbImOuttaHere same looool
so subtle but holy shit it fits so well
edit:spelling
Man, here in polyphia the 'most skilled member' title is for sure highly disputed. The 'hottest member' one is not.
Right, it's easily Tim ;)
Scott’s nose
@@Hoskins-pv2mu DAMNIT! You beat me to it! 😂
U r big gay
Home boy talkin' about Clay Gober on a Clay Aeschliman video
*Trap Hihat intensifies*
jokes aside, this is a killer playthrough.
When you got to duplicate the vibe of stoned-out, broke-ass rappers just clicking in hi-hat MIDI wherethefuckever into FL Studio, LOL.
@Noah Mortola not really polyphia in particular, just music and videos I enjoy. It's a pretty cool way of interacting with people with common interests, though sometimes it gets pretty horrid haha.
@Noah Mortola He really is! I'm a big fan of him and alot of the prog guys (matt garstka, matt halpern, anup sastry). It's always so informative to watch these guys play and try and translate it to your own playing.
@@NickAcker Great to see you here man, this guy's got a great feel :)
Nick why is it that you have the top comment on every youtube video I have ever watched? :'D Such wisdom from this man
Nothing makes me happier than seeing a musician have genuine joy while preforming. The stick click at 2:45 adds so much personality too
I don’t think dude gets enough credit. I keep seeing “Tim’s changing guitar” especially with this riff.. but this dudes just as talented!
his part is way easier. Everyone who doesnt agree has no clue
@@luisbeinstrong5419 "his part is way easier" - sounds like you are the one who has no clue...the drummer is insane
I'm not one to say shit like this, but here it is.
Tim Henson is a visionary.
Clay Aeschliman is a god.
Scott LePage is the messenger.
Clay Gober slaps.
It takes a whole team of kick-ass dudes to pull shit like this together, and there are more than enough reasons this song is called G.O.A.T.
yeah true, hope scott and the two clays make it big here too
This whole band is on the cutting edge of polyrhythmic goodness
This dude has an interesting play style. Not super flashy, but sneaks alot of quick tasty licks in all the right places. His style definitely suits this band well.
some people may say he's all flash and ego but he's serving what polyphia and this specific sound need no more no less
Yeah for sure. The reason behind that is because Tim actually writes all of the parts
this is the most sexual playthrough ive seen
Daniel Mihaylov Check out Matt's from Animals As Leaders
@@mido3ontheway literally was about to comment the same thing lol
David Mosher Matt is such a phenomenal musician haha
why tf this made me laugh
This dude is one of the tightest drummers I've heard for quite a while.
Yeah agreed.
It’s not just the tight drumming. It is the space he leaves that keeps your breath catching.
That smile, is the smile of someone who loves every single thing about his job. Respect.
His. Urwlcme
@@andychristian1621 mb, thx buddy
Reminds me of Steven Adler (without the drug induced psychosis)
God tier
"PoLyPhIa DoEsN't UsE rEaL dRuMs AnYmOrE"
Wrong
They didn't on the studio releases, you can clearly see drum hits that are not heard in the music video version of this track.
Corbin Hohnstreiter got proof?
Jacob Foehrkolb
I just saw them live. Yes they do, quithating
For anyone not getting this- it was a joke, I know they use real drums- as shown here. I was making fun of the people who say they only use drum machines, etc now. Polyphia themselves have a video with this title showing their drummer play one of the songs from the new album
I am a time traveler from 2039. You need to upload a playthrough of Look but don't Touch before the end of March of this year. There's no time to explain, the future of the world depends on you.
I now wholly believe this person, shit's getting real
Everyone knows that covid kills us all in 2020
What a stupid and cringe worthy comment
@@hellodumplings8564 no dude it was funny
All this shit happened cause clay didn't do a playthrough of look but don't touch lmao
This dude rocks, plain and simple. That cheeky little clap at 2:45 is just perfect. He sneaks so much « hi-tech » stuff in, blink and you’ll miss it. Class. I always thought he was rocking a double kick pedal, turns out he’s just badass. Respect.
He has one but it isn’t used nearly as often as people would think
Another drummer rocking the unbeatable Meinl-Tama combo.
Dope 🙌💯💨
Sonor + Sabian is the unbeatable
Love those brands too.
Doesnt matter. As long as the drummers good any kit will do
Gretsch-Zildjian is the way to go
Jesus Christ it’s Jesus Christ
Move aside Jason Bourne
@@stereosirenmusic994 hahaha, thought the same. He looks like Jim Caviezel a lot..
Dominic Borrelli he reminds me of Jason mamoah or however you spell his name
When I saw this it had 666 likes
The son of man did not come to be served, but to serve. \m/
No lie, the amount of sound space Clay leaves for the other members to play is increadible.
2:40 Those 2 quick slides on the dual crash are some of the little things that make this guy so fun to watch/listen to. Incredible
Going into this playthrough - bet he don't use all the cymbals
He definitely does
Andrew Marshall I watching through this and keeping track and I can guarantee he definitely uses every cymbal
@@ryanhenderson2388 I agree I watched quite a few times because I was blown away 😂
Kind of all he uses.
He doesn't play all like there's one tiny cymbal next to hi hat that he doesn't play but maybe that's cause he forgot to play it
He literally used every symbol just from 1:30 - 1:42 😂
OMG HE SILENCED THE CYMBALS WITH HIS FINGER FOR A STEP OF THE BEAT, never noticed in the song until i saw it there… absolute musical genius in many regards
I can say with all honestly I love this far more than the studio recording. The natural drum tones are so much more appealing.
the way he creates space is unlike any drummer i've heard. it's always so difficult to get a drummer to stop playing for even one second in a song lol
I didn't know Thorin Oakenshield played the drums
Bilbo Baggins likes this.
I don't know how many amazing bands I've discovered through MEINL Cymbals demonstrations, or even whether that's how I found Polyphia, but these are uniformly showchases of amazing bands.
I like how he mouths the beats to himself while playing. I do the same.
nah, they just forgot to plug his mic in the first time he played with them. he was supposed to be a drummer/singer.
JediNxf7 that’s why they didn’t plug it. They don’t want him to sing the words.
So do Roger Taylor
perfect song to demonstrate cymbals, so many dynamics and they're the star of the drums. Well chosen Meinl!
Tim Before Prison: Vocals
Tim After Prison: Drums
LOL
Alsaud Artworks this is not Tim.
@@DMRCapitalHill Yep, It's a joke dude, a joke lol
Probably due to too much bangin’
Hernán Andrés Noguera Hevia probably 😂
I thought they same thing lol.
2:58 the leg not playing that specific beat is... just... holy.
The sound quality is amazing wtf congrats to the audio engineer
Searched for "Polyphia GOAT drum cover."
Was not disappointed.
It's not a cover, it's a live version. Actually, every video of them playing was a live perform. Hehe
Andy Christian he didn’t say it was a cover
triplet rolls/diddles brought to you and part by: marching band.
exactly what i was thinking. dude had to of been in drumline at some point lol
Cameron Bosch bruh played tenors
Relatable
Still fucken cool
I feel like most of the best metal drummers were in marching band. You can hear that influence all over metal.
I am always in awe of the drums on any Polyphia track. Everybody watches the guitar but this guy is definitely one of the best drummers alive. Dat high hat
I love how every instrument in this song leads up to their own 'final form' moment to a climactic kameyameya in my ears and that it works perfectly.
My God hes just so damn creative. I love how his beats actually play off the rest of the band. The way he approached it almost reminds me of Chris tuner from oaa
I hope he won't try to kill his wife
reference?
s0nspark Tim Lambesis
How many will get that haha
I seriously thought is was Tim at first lol
@@TitouanDebray Ha! :)
Clay! My dude! Always such precise playing man. Loved it. I've seen you live 3 times, but it's so nice to just see all the little things you do up close.
I can really see Clay being one of the greatest drummers ever to live.
What an incredible drummer! Absolute pleasure to watch!
Wow.. this dude's understanding of polyrhythms and ability to switch time signatures.. is quite impressive. He's no Danny Carey of course.. but he's also one of the only drummers I've found that instantly made me want to compare him to Danny.
Who knew the second coming of Jesus would be tatted and play drums for Polyphia lol but seriously, amazing playing man.
thank you meinl cymbals for providing the most amazing content and drummers
one of the gifted ones. great work. impeccable timing. smooth flow. intent to deliver. 🙂
Watching Clay and Polyphia play this live will forever be one of my all time concert/show experiences.
The whole band is so sick and Clay kills it with the Trap Hihat trills.
Love the stick click at 2:44👌
I've always been impressed by the complexity and the damn placements are just wow.
I could listen/watch this all day!
100% most flawless performance of anything I've ever seen in my life.
1:49 omggg that fill sounds so so good
Wonderful tone and amazing drummer!!!
Beautifully composed!!
Love the emotion he put in this masterpiece!
FINALLY! I was trying to cover the song but now I know what to actually play!
He just kills it for me with the hi-hat everytime. And don't even get me started on the fills.... Played to perfection
Truly one of my favourite drummers. He's one that you can listen to all day solo
I wish the drums sounded like this on the album! Amazing.
What a hunk of chiselled beauty 🤩
...That dude ain’t bad looking either
Leave it to Meinl to bring us an amazingly unique piece that not only sounds as good or better than the original recording, but is filmed beautifully.
Amazing work! So glad I found this~
The consistency of quality of your metric modulating between duple and triple is outstanding.
I forget that polyphia is a actual live band.
I honestly enjoy this new type of band, maybe it's just natural that we love something original right?
Man, this may have sold me on that Matt Garska stack. That thing sounds great
Dude, this track has always been on point. The way you nail the splash coming from the triplect , hit the ride and China, then roll to double snare... seriously wtf!!!. I'm dumb founded bro. Your probably the best drummer I've seen
The drumming and bass playig is what really makes this song great. That hat work is awesome, love how it has a trap feel.
Suspenseful.. when he rests a few beats I find myself anticipating him playing again
The technically of this song in all aspects is mind blowing. Some dude said that the guitar was harder than the drums in this song so I felt the need to say no matter what you’re playing in this song you have to be above average to play this. And that’s a understatement
Killer talent! Such an interesting way to play drums.
Cymbal work like that doesn’t come along every day. Pure excellence
Prod. : So, how complicated can you make the drum beat on this song?
Clay: YES
Never thought he could turn his cross into sticks. What a holy man he is
great job on the drums in this song. these cymbals sound great
He is so precise! So good
i would love to see how they mixed the drums. they sound insanely good.
Good god. So dope
love how he makes groove with his symbals.
I have never seen Clay not smile while playing the drums. I wish anything in my life could bring me that kind of happiness.
1:33 you can hear him vocalizing the music. Pretty cool.
He was great in Aquaman
Incredible sound!
Wicked! simply one of the best.
Looks like John Frusciante went from programming drums to actually playing them
Bilbo Baggins likes this.
Video summed in one sentence: A death metal looking drummer playing hip hop beats on Matt Garstka's drum kit
Meanwhile I love this guys more and more, their level of humble is amazing!!!
Just amazing!
2:55 is absolutely vile. So good
Unreal how that last part on the toms just cuts out leaving space after, I love that part as well
3:09-3:18*
I soooo want to know who the mix engineer is that did this drum mixing. Damn what an awesome sound. Best drumsound I've heard in a really long time! Kuddos to the engineer!
@Mr mans Great drummer, high quality drumkit, high quality microphones, microphone placement, and a really great audio engineer, it all adds up to the sound we hear in this video.
I fully appreciate how he is mouthing the drum parts like I do when I'm listening to this song in my car. Except you know, he's probably getting them right.
this sounds so awesome
i am trying to learn this
thus far i can play everything perfectly until 0:36
Bruh
Getting there!😂
Dont worry it took me 3 years to learn the whole thing
Every prog drummer seems to play Tama and meinl
Aidan Scroggins it's the unbeatable combo
Agree
Hoooold up. Ma Boi Gavin Harrison is killin it with Sonor
Rip matt halpern
@@jacobcox5536 naw dude. Halpern has mad chops. He could play this. He's actually played harder patterns .
Found this via Liquor and Whoas. Love it. The sound created goes in deep.
I can tell it’s free play and not rehearsed. It’s absolutely phenomenal.
When you give ya boi Jesus a drumset for his 2nd coming present.
This track is so difficult they had to call Aquaman to record it!
Minus Tim's guitar playing Clay's playing is really what made polyphia stand out for me. His cymbal work is so good and creative.
Talented as hell!! Bummed I miss their show
