Drums & Coffee!
🥁☕🙌
Clay has mastered the art of space. He leaves space, which let's the music breathe, but also lets his tasty fills stand out. Great addition to the band.
Well said!
Dude you’ve never even been to space. You can’t taste things in space. You should hear yourself. 🥴
@@jessecruzen1597 Hahaha, good one
@@jessecruzen1597 how can we think about tasting riffs when the music can’t even breathe, man?!
It’s very Danny Carey-esque
What I love about Polyphia is that each member is a complete monster on the instrument they play and together they are just phenomenal.
Even the camera guys and editors are awesome, you can see everything being performed clearly.
Kinda like Led Zep. They just can't do any wrong because every player is so incredible and the band is so tight.
@@teehee186 😂😂😂
@@teehee186 also the director, i love the set of playing god! it gave such a chill, and unique vibe to it, especially in that ivy filled house during the bossa nova section!
Truly polyphonic
I went to high school with Clay. He was in the Drum line and was amazing. Also I repember in Spanish class he always had his drum sticks and this weird rubber pad that he would practice on. So much so the teacher has to take it away. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you want to be good at something, practice, practice, practice!
100%!!!!
That's awesome
I don't know if practice alone will get you to that kind of level that Clay is showing here. It's 90% practice for sure, followed by 9% pure talent, but the last 1% is genius. And that is what we have seen here in this clip. I don't think that you can get there only with practice and talent.
Not only, you also need to be a musical genious.
@@emorsi Not quickly at least. Sounds like this guy has been playing for a very long time, and sounds like he practices *a lot*, so of course you're not going to catch up to him. However, with the same level of dedication you could get close to where he is *now*.
Neil pert of rush his father made him play on a drum pad for a full year before he was even allowed to get a drum kit anyone can play like this it’s all about hand techniques, backing with rudiments & time
i swear...Clay has mastered the art of doing a ton while not doing too much at the same time.
Total relaxation and control
Clay is such a great drummer. His accuracy with the mix of trap beats with jazzy accents is just unlike anyone else in the rock side of music right now.
Unreal Zach
This. This right here.
Clay is the one drummer that I just can't predict anything he's about to do. His parts are simple yet ridiculously complicated at the same time
Well said Joe. One of the best!
i love how you include the meaning everytime you speak a jargon saves the time from searching it up. you got my sub
Thanks Ricky!
I saw in another reaction that Clay was in a marching band, which is why he is so tight and clean with his playing. They also stated that he definitely pulled some of the rolls from the marching band into this, especially with the high hats and the ride.
That makes sense
If I recall the interview, he was a quad drummer which definitely makes the tom fills make sense.
@@DiamondiumJones Nice info! Thanks!
I know other bands do it too, but I really love the way Polyphia treat the drums as another instrument and not just as a timekeeping device
Yea he’s really good. When they played at SoWhat festival in Texas, I guess his in-ears went out. So his drum tech who could hear the tracks and click through his in-ears tapped his leg through the whole show so Clay wouldn’t go off. What I read about this that was even more impressive, assuming it’s true, is he played a good portion of one of their songs without click before he was able to make anyone aware but didn’t miss a beat. That’s solid playing right there!
Theres a video on it somewhere. It happened haha. The dude is beyond impressive
This is true. I worked MainStage (that stage) at the festival. His tech absolutely deserves some credit. His tracks + levels are different than clays which is why he couldn’t give clay his pack. Another band outside the stadium brought an ears rig and did not clear it with either RF tech on site and it fucked everyone that was playing the same time slot
As a guitarist i knew how talented of a drummer he was but did not fully appreciate his ARTISTRY until seeing his drum playthrough of this song. He riffs on those drums like a stringed instrument. Getting every tone and texture out of each piece of his kit. That's beyond technical proficiency. That's beyond drumming.
Just... wow.
What a boss
Clay is my absolute favorite drummer because how he stops, getting on again, stops, and riding the train again is so unique and sounds so instantly classic. I think he is one of the best in the world right now.
I like to call Polyphia "Inter-dimensional Elevator Music".
HAHAHA
Yeah, that sums it up perfectly.
I play no musical instruments and this kicks ass.
SURE DOES!
I think the best part of this, isn't the playing. It's the skill and creativity it takes to actually compose a track like this
What stands out most about his style is how long he can go relying entirely on cymbals and bass*. There’s whole phrases of the song where he’ll maybe touch the snare once through a whole bar. That level of control, and really using the whole kit is what makes him standout.
Great compositional approach
Exactly. He really has a mastering of the space between the melody that I don't hear from anyone else. It's almost like a foreign style of playing to me because of how his approach is.
@@zachhamilton456 my old high school band teacher used to say 20% of being a great drummer is knowing where to put notes, and 80% is knowing where not to put notes so the other instruments can take the foreground.
yes! he really shows how the beat can be pushed and music can be created across the cymbals. theyre not just keeping time and crashing at the end of a bar
@@zachhamilton456 its cause hes really accentuating a hip hop beat rather than maintaining a steady rock style backbeat.
Legato in drums. Lol 😆 Such an amazing drummer. His play style is so different, I can only explain it as playing the drums like a guitar.
That’s it Harvey. Or a horn player
So someone else has said it already but just wanted to reinforce the idea that Clay is playing Trap beats with jazz inspiration. The guitar you are right, there is certainly djent elements a la Animals as Leaders. It's also got a low fi feeling about it, which makes you want to play this track at midnight while cruising down the highway. I really liked the electronic elements, especially the "glitch" at about a third of the song in.
There is a sound I make when a Drummer does something amazing. It's kinda like "pluh" but with more disbelief. That video was pluhcentral!
I hear ya Chris
Only now watching this, he brings Stewart Copeland of The Police to mind, around 1979 - 1980, especially the song "The Bed's Too Big Without You".
Great shout
I love this Polyphia reactions..it always start with a little Mentor like attitude and ends with "I must more practice " in mind
Polypia's genre blending creations are quite unique.
Hope you enjoy a wonderful new year & thank you for the reaction! 😁
My dad’s coworker somehow called Clay a 4/10, so we have since been sending him videos nonstop of Clay playing just to make him feel like an idiot 😂
😮
Another great video! He really makes his playing look effortless, I love the sound of his snare as well. Keep the videos coming! :)
Thanks! Will do Mike!
Really love how you show explanations to various terms! Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Awesome reaction as always Andrew! Keep up the great work 🤘
Thanks! Will do Brian!
YESSSS I been waiting for this!!! Thanks Drew 🔥🔥🔥
YESSS
first time watching you and i gotta say I appreciate the fact that whenever you use a technical term you put an explanation
Thanks Alexander!
I was hs marching band/ indoor drum line/ jazz/ concert band and then into wgi open/ world so I’ve dabbled in different percussion and I’ve always found drum line battery gives people the best base for drumset imo. Things have changed so much. When I was in school the radio was filled with drummers with middle school level talent and now we have so many truly amazing players.
Absolutely amazing dexterity and adroitness. Clay is an off the charts player.
Agree Lou
Great that you reacted to the drum playthrough. Perfect for your channel, and I enjoyed your reaction! I'd suggest watching the produced full-band video now, and also Tim Henson's guitar play-through, which is mind-blowing. Not sure either of those videos is a fit for your channel, but I'm sure you'd enjoy and appreciate them.
I'll check it out Mike!
Drums is such an adventure. What I'm liking most about learning of this man is the realization that the speed and chops are really just focused on the hats and cymbals. Bass drum is pretty rudimentary for the most part isn't it? It just grooves. But the hands are insane and the subdivisions and space is to me, what makes this stuff stand out. It sounds great; so musical.
I like the informational blurbs you edit in afterwards
Great! Thanks for the feedback!
no need to transcribe it, polyphia has it available :) Clay is a damn amazing and the entire band is just amazing. I'm loving how polyphia has erased the concept of genre from their music. They just create awesome art.
Polyphias genre has become "polyphia". What an achievement.
That was another amazing video. Keep up the great videos…..CHEERS!!!!!
Thanks Janson!
Clay definitely has is own composition style and patterns. But in general is not to surprising to me (compared to new era drummers) Please we need a Matt Garstka special!! He recently has released a lot of playthrough videos, and every song has his own "character" to make different analysis. Greetings from Chile!!
Hola! Sounds good. Can't wait to see more Matt
I knew it was good, but hearing and seeing it isolated makes it even better. I'm kinda inspired to learn this now.
Love Clay's drums on Chimera as well!
"Transcribe that fill for me, im gonna learn it. Just kidding I can't play it." hahahah man I cracked up. I think we are all thinking the same thing. He is unreal
Yes Matt!!!
This song is a major show of his marching band experience. The whole drum solo looked like he was paying a set of tenors from the drum line lol.
2:01
when the pros smile: nice
when the pros frown: you've made history
HAHA Benjamin
As a non-drummer even I can see his timing and rhythm are just Extraordinary.
Yo, I really liked you throwing up the definitions of terms up on screen.
Yes I need to do that more often!
THANKS
So I've been surfing all these teacher reaction channels being a polyfiite. Love the reactions
would love to see Clay and El Estepario Siberiano do a drum off. I think these 2 drummers are 2 of the top drummers in the world right now!
That was beautiful.
i love it so much~~~
use cymbal do a fill
What makes his playing so fluid is ability to stay relaxed. Really is a beautiful performance. Genre is technically math rock
Yeah that's what I thought, it's in the math rock umbrella.
See you at 99.5k subscribers checkin in before you hit 100k cheers bud!
Fingers crossed Ross!
**Clay Aeschliman enters the top drummer conversation.**
Clay is the man!
Super tasty stuff Andrew 🙏🏼
@AndrewRooneyDrums sweet flight of the conchords t-shirt!
The track’s been on repeat!
I freaking love this. LOVE IT
The genre is called epic
The Key and Peele snip got me. Alright, 1 sub right to you!
Do you have any videos of you playing drums? Love the content man, keep it up!
Hey Dale!
Yup hundreds of vids of me playing on here :)
You know it's business time when Rooney busts out the Flight of the Conchords shirt
Genre: Groovy Math Rock
I don’t know the defy being placed into any genre so what kind of made something up that vaguely fits
I've only heard 4 songs of theirs so far, but it sounds like smooth jazz to me.
Didn't know Bruce Willis was a drum teacher man of many talents
The original song has a lot of emphasis on the guitars and bass, I'm glad this video exists so we can see just how cracked the drums are, too.
Four absolute virtuosi creating magic on the soundwaves: Polyphia.
I keep telling my son, "Son, keep learning them stick controls, you'll use it one day!" haha
"monster, Absolute Monster"😀😀
YUP!!! lol
These dudes are all ludicrously talented at their respective instruments
Before I heard Clay play, my favorite drummer for creativity in rock was Josh Eppard from Coheed & Cambria. Coincidentally, Clay has a full armful of Coheed Tattoos.
This seems like jazz played "correctly" and with a very dynamic and sharp technique.
Hey Andrew! You should check out a song called Misty covered by a guitarist Joe Robinson; some of the best classical finger-picking off all time and it utilizes a walking bass too. I think you’d really enjoy the complexity :)
this man is just so filthy on the drums i just bust out laughing listening to this
Clay is a beast!
Damn straight!
Progressive jazz rock fusion. No words, just a stank face.
Can you do a video on Marco Minneman. Also love that snare you got there, it’s my main snare for while now.
Thanks Larry! I think I have done a new vid On Marco... (I think)
And yup. I hardly ever get to use that snare because I gig on a supraphonic
Aeschliman? Geesh! No wonder he’s such a good percussionist. It takes both coordination and practice just to say and spell his last name.
That was really good.
Unbelievable Matt
you're dame right wow.
Your blinds are clean and well maintained
Hi Andrew, I think that trying to define Polyphia in a musical type is approaching a level of mental gymnastics that will make a serious mess of your day!. When I first heard them, my immediate reaction was to compare them with Sky (check them out, especially their second album if you get a chance) with John Williams and Herbie Hancock - it was just fabulous. If you want my tuppence worth, the lead guitar work is almost classical in style, the rhythm and drums are more jazz/funk, the combination is ear candy (or Classical/Jazz/Funk fusion, your choice but, I prefer ear candy).
Yup I really dig this Jerry. Thanks for the info!
I've thought of you...and everyone of their Music Vids...and yeah very Jazzy...I've heard it addressed as Math Rock and Tim's face always seems to accompany that... I've termed it Prog Rock meets Jazz. Whatever label floats your boat it's... insanely good if not incredible.
awsome! 🍻
LOVE IT
Aeschliman drums like god, for sure
Agree Sergio
Thunder Funk!
My favorite part is actually after the “overdub” when he’s on the ride and that left hand is doing WORK. Clay is an animal! That fill is also absolutely disgusting 😂
Please react to Volkan Oktem-Sultan fainted, it is a pure drumming masterclas 🤘😎
Clay's a straight up Bad Ass!
Absolutely incredible
Polyphia fits into one of the broadest genres: PROG ROCK! They have don't a whole lot that is much closer to djent metal but they have always experimented with different sounds.
I don't play drums and I don't enjoy this kind of music at all but I'm entranced by the musicianship of each of them.
Clay is great, you’ll see ART with Blur-Lights by Improta. 🤪
I'll get there Rob!
Hey Andrew quick question! 🙋 So on Polyphia’s latest album they dropped a song called The Audacity. Very cool, technical and jazzy track! And featuring Anamolie on keys 🎹 Anyway I haven’t seen Clay drop a playthrough for it yet but… there’s an Asian gentleman that has a channel with some drum covers and his cover of The Audacity is incredible!!! It’s seems to be pretty on par with the original drums on the track and is executed perfectly 👌 I would definitely suggest giving this guy some love, I don’t know his name because I can’t read whatever language his channel name is in but I can send you the link to the video if you’d be interested?
I think the best way to describe polyphia as a whole is that they take a little bit from every single genre that's genre it's out there right now jazz electronic hip hop rock prog rock and probably a few others And create something that doesn't fit into any of those Genre's
Polyphia never fails to impress.
you said it right, ...monster.
100%
His toms are part of the Melody
100% Kevin! Such a musical drummer
Love the fotc shirt. I miss brett and jemaine
You don't need anyone to transcribe it they have all of their music transcribed and available for purchase on their website if I recall correctly
Sleep token hypnosis drum through by II. Shit is amazing.
You're gonna dig next week Matt...
This is John Mclaughin, Paco DeLucia, and Al Dimeola musically reincarnated and modernized to arrangements that do not lose the non-musical listener (which the formers often did while showcasing their virtuosities). 'Ineffable' is my description. The bar has been reinvented.
Free and unsolicited idea for your channel: you know on top gear how they always had the leaderboard of fastest test track times for the cars they review? Every drummer you react to should be ranked on a running leaderboard. Obviously this is subjective at a certain point and ranking drummers is kind of silly, but it elicits opinions/comments, adds continuity to your series of vids, sets you apart from the other react channels, etc. If the community thinks someone is too low/high they can request a re-rank for a different vid. Keep up the good work and have fun. Cheers.
I find it funny how the classical music background music you put behind "what is legato" is probably one of the least legato well known sections in classical music.
HAHA!
It's the same classical stinger I use for any definition drop.
Mod. Displacement. Poly. Comping etc...
the Hi Hat whisperer
LOL yes!
