theres a little video tim henson uploaded of him writing two parts on piano, one chording and one melody, then playing both parts together on guitar. The piano bit sounds pretty simple and very good, but when he transferred to whole lot to the guitar it turns into the kind of thing we hear here. From there I think they just start embelleshing and taking liberties with the riff until its all wacky and all over the place. Amazing.
I noticed them, also I think the guitars can get crowded and sound too busy at points, it's highly technical but I don't know as that always makes for good music.. Still, I am here checking it out anyway, open mind is good..
After playing guitar over 20 years, and listening to thousands and thousands of prolific work by other guitarists from fingerstyle/tap, to jazz, blues, and everything else under the sun- this absolutely blew my fucking mind.

This drummer is a MASTER of utilizing the space between his hits/strokes to enhance the music. The silence and the hits that he holds off on are just as musical as his strokes. That kind of patience and coordination is uncanny!

I would say he's within the top 100 in the world, in terms of drumming. It's his passion for sure, and it's amazing to see him succeed in Polyphia. Love what you do and you'll never work a day.
Basically. Usually with bands, there's one or two stand out members that are better musicians than the rest, but not with this band. The drums, the bass, the guitars: they're all masters of their respective crafts.
@@hannahlanai actually the drummer stands out cuz he's the only old-looking guy in the group lmao. Jokes aside I think in terms of skill the first guitarist stands out the most, the rest don't look too irreplaceable to me as a decently skilled person in that field can play what they're playing.

I still think that all of them are fairly masterful at their instruments, especially compared to the average skill level of musicians putting out music. They might not be "the best ____ player ever," but certainly a higher caliber than most. That's just my opinion though; I don't think there's any one correct opinion here, so I appreciate hearing yours too.

I love how they often finish each other's rhythmic statements. Listen to 3:06 - 3:09 The guitar starts the phrase and drums almost finishes the phrase until the guitar comes back in. Think about the technical level to go from a rip to a groove and back so effortlessly while maintaining that tight pocket. Amazing. All of them.

Gotta say, I LOVE how everyone gets equal screening in this. The technicality these guys have is unmeasured.... dont get me wrong, the world is filled with incredible musicians, but something about Polyphia just makes them stand out above the rest. Each member has such a crucial part to each song, and again the technicality in each instrument is beyond godlike
Polyphia is barely scratching the surface of technicality and music complexity, they are simply more easy on the eyes so anyone can pick up something from them and like it. Doesn't remove the merit they have just not the godlike status you gave them, they are far from it.
Polyphia's guitar/bass players get a lot of love but holy crap the drummer is underappreciated. Someone much smarter than me accurately said that the drummer is so good that he makes his pauses feel like they have weight.

Of the many fantastic things about this tune, one that I love that I never hear people talk about is the Shellac-like guitar tone. Both guitar and bass have this great high-mid prominent tone that's just in your face and aggressive.

I love how they often finish each other's rhythmic statements. Listen to 3:06 - 3:09 The guitar starts the phrase and drums almost finishes the phrase until the guitar comes back in. Think about the technical level to go from a rip to a groove and back so effortlessly while maintaining that tight pocket. Amazing. All of them.

Without vocals, gotta do something for 3 plus minutes. Not really "solos". ill admit, I'm almost 40 and I just didn't get this band at first. I'm comfortable enough to say that the younger generations are annihilating the boxes that even the most creative have constructed for ourselves back in the day. I used to say it has no hard or feeling or that it's 10 lb of s*** in the bag but really I could never think of doing it the way they do it. Lastly, I see a lot of people covering their licks or riffs and for a second it kind of has me thinking that what did you even so unique. But they created it. Well, after watching it again I'm wondering if there are even any other band members... Seriously, I'm only seeing a drummer guys. Well, the video must have been shot inside of someone's pants... The technicality these guys have is unmeasured.... dont get me wrong, the world is filled with incredible musicians, but something about Polyphia just makes them stand out above the rest. Each member has such a crucial part to each song, and again the technicality in each instrument is beyond godlike

Of the many fantastic things about this tune, one that I love that I never hear people talk about is the Shellac-like guitar tone. Both guitar and bass have this great high-mid prominent tone that's just in your face and aggressive.
The drums are insanely tight in this, they almost sound programmed.

Timeless piece for a timeless theme. Each of these guys puts on a stellar performance that just stretches the limits of human credulity. POLYPHIA is redefining virtuosity and setting a whole new bar to overcome for future musicians. This is a good thing.

Really appreciate how each piece of the band is given time to shine in this song. People tend to see the bass as a supporting sound in a band, but it's really given a spotlight at certain points in this song, and Clay crushes it every step of the way.

I think for this band....it's a perfect storm of perfections.
The last drummer was honestly talented in his own right, but Clay really does add that pinch of flavor that really puts it al together.
