I don’t think so he work for numerous different houses so they had a lot to pull from and if you look at his past collections not all we’re “safe”. The celebs just failed to deliver. An example of this could be dua lipa who wore a stunning vintage Chanel gown but didn’t commit to the full look that Claudia Schiffer wore in the original photo like the hat and jacket which would of made her really pop.

Vivienne was far less controversial, in ways far more grounbreaking while being just as iconic as Lagerfeld. She was never basic like Lagerfeld sometimes was, lets be honest. I cant handle this toothpaste carpet and just picking a piece out of a clothing catalogue, throwing it on with no creativity… Over what could have been with Westwood; the fun, the joy, the layers, deconstructed and unique looks you could have had with Vivienne. Dua Lipa's dress is such a missed opportunity in my opinion. The dress has a healthy dose of rococo elements to it, with a structured torso and large skirt. Since the rococo was an era of excess and artifice, it would have been entirely appropriate for Dua to be heavily jeweled; in turn, referencing back to Karl's early Chanel days that you discussed. I would have loved to have seen Dua with a large and elaborate hairstyle, possibly adorned with accessories from the Chanel archive. I also feel like her arms are too bare for me, if she had gone the rococo route then she could have worn some beautiful white gloves. Jewels, hair, flowers, accessories, etc. It was all there for the taking but it just feels like they chose such a simple interpretation. :/
💯 to everything you said. Especially because Dua can pull off super glamorous looks with her strong features. Some people are easily overwhelmed with heavy accessories but she is not one of them. I am the most disappointed with her because it was the worst missed opportunity.
Impressive comment, though no word on the pockets?! As a Met member who has (rather uncomprehendingly!) taken in the Met fashion shows for 20+ years: Dua's look haunted me all night. One commentator said she looked like a Disney princess, maybe thinking of Lily Collins in "Snow White", she wore something almost identical - though with a swan as a hat!
@Bigheartoneggshells We understand Coco Chanel’s style. But you’re the one who doesn’t understand that that the met gala theme was Karl Lagerfeld. Not Coco Chanel. Karl was heavy on accessories. Especially costume jewelry. In fact, he used to be terribly criticized for over accessorizing. There’s a reason that Claudia Schiffer originally wore Dua’s dress with a jacket, a hat with a big rose, and swirls of frilly, wide ribbon all over a glamorous updo.
@Bigheartoneggshells Your criticisms of my thoughts are all well and good if the theme of the Met Gala was CHANEL. However, that was not the theme. The theme was KARL LAGERFELD and a celebration of HIS work. Though he may have been at the helm of Chanel for many years (bringing it back from near-death), he was his own creative and had his own modes of inspiration for his work (the rococo period being one of them). I never wanted Dua to dress in period attire, because that would be cosplaying. No, I wanted her to use the dress that she was given (or chose idk) and really utilise it to it’s full advantage. The dress does have rococo themes throughout it and, if she had played her cards right, she could have played into that fact by creating a style that encompassed signature “fluff” from that period; honouring Karl’s creative process in turn. It could have been done in a very chic way, while still paying homage to Karl’s creative process.
THANK YOU. I looked at the pictures last night and hardly raised an eyebrow at any of them. Very few people looked ~bad, but there weren't any truly stunning outfits, either. Honestly, the thing that made me the happiest was seeing Ke Huy Quan!!
@Nils Sjoberg She literally didn't. There are multiple articles written speculating why she didn't attend, and there are no photos... if you saw her in white chanel garb, it was a picture from 2011
I was OBSESSED with Conan Gray's Balmain outfit !! Not only by the amount of pearls, the tweed and the gloves, but also by the fan which also signified his Japanese heritage !!
well also karl use to carry those types of fans too/become one of his signature accessories. so the fan Conan had, has to two meanings behind it! very smart on Conan's part! for the afterparty he wore black big sunglasses which Karl used to wear and the mini "Karl who?" pin, so he was on theme/stylish all night
the lack of accessories left me flabbergasted honestly, i was so happy when you pointed out the fact that no one even bothered to throw on a necklace atleast 😒are they allergic to them? lmao
tbh I was kinda expecting more this year. The majority of people either wore archive chanel designed by Lagerfeld, which is on theme but uninspired. The other half of the majority did an interpretation of lagerfield's classic black and white suit, which some looked amazing doing. Both of these choices were fine, I just wish we saw more variety. Like where are the pearls, big gold accessories, and etc.
I love the idea of the Momento Mori x Momente Vivere theme SO much it would be so good to honor the great minds of the fashion industry and besides I just have a weakness for black
Thank you for stating that KARL EQUALS CHUNKY CHAINS, not pearls!!! I understood the use of pearls when they were applied on a edgy way (like Anne Hathaway's dress, for example), but when people wore them like a conservative Chanel lady they completely missed!
@@ISayMusicYouSayYes When did I ever say that? What I meant was when people used them at the MET in a more traditional way, they were paying homage to Chanel under Coco's management, not exactly Karl's, which is different because they both had different approaches when it comes to fashion.

I feel like your the first commentator to completely share my thoughts almost exactly. Many styles were to on the nose without elevation and many more were just regular movie premiere types of attire, not what I expect from the Gala. It was underwhelming but I’m so grateful to the celebrities who understood the assignment.
My favorite was Anne Hathaway, that’s exactly what I was hoping for, different fashion houses reinterpreting what lagerfeld was known for, I knew Donatella was going to give us something good, I also like all the Thom Browne looks for the same reason
I'm not a Lagerfeld, or Chanel, fan so a lot of references were lost on me. I just kept thinking 'Nice gowns, beautiful gowns.' More impressed with the men this year than usual though.
My main miss-out of this Met gala is the absence of some names on the carpet this year, like Blake Lively, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Zendaya...
I agree no one took the push to do something new or out there, it felt very safe. Also the prompt could have been better as there wasn’t much people could do to emulate karl and put a twist. I liked Doja cats look it was original, Halle Bailey and yara shahidi looked great, and there is this one dark skin model who looked amazing.
I was actually shocked by the lack of nods to the work he did with Chloe. There were so many more textures, colors, and silhouettes that could have been played with from that house alone! Same with Fendi! Like Janelle did some of the geometric inspiration with their look, but I didn't see anyone else really going for that aspect of his style. Actually, now that I think about it...Where were the logos? Like, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he design the Fendi double F logo?? Wasn't he one of the first to lean into logomania? I'm now even less impressed than I was before.
I know right! I get that Karl Lagerfeld is widely recognized for his creative direction of Chanel, but people tend to forget he was a designer at several reputed fashion houses before his tenure at Chanel, so the celebrities and their teams actually had a large repertoire to be inspired from :/
Absolutely, all I saw was Chanel, and some were plain Chanel not every Karl’s. He’s one of my favorite designers, such a wasted opportunity. Also, where was Inès de la Fressange, Caroline de Monaco? God, even Claudia Schiffer?
I was so bumped that Blake Lively didn't go. As usually her Look would have been probably the most creatively on theme. However Anne Hathaway did it on point. Not boring, you can see that Chanel inspired, but a bit less simple than Coco's Chanel. It was the most Creative interpratation of theme this year
11:30 to be fair, Lil Nas X did over-accessorize his face, so it's more accurate to say he grazed the edge of the target board rather than totally missing the mark entirely
I was sooo happy to see CJR’s dress created from the Vogue video. Thom Browne’s looks were breath taking and original so it brought back the old vibe of Met Gala see designers take inspiration and expanding on it. Olivia’s dress looked like that Prada platform boot to me.
He was. You can see the whispers and shape of a cat nose. The issue is that no one could tell he was supposed to be a cat. The peak of theirs was badly done.
I loved Gisele’s look, and also Bad Bunny got me, I was at first like “okay white suit with camellias, not bad” and then I saw the back and loved it. Alexandra Daddario needs a whole new team. A whole new team.
Hmph, what actual Hunger Games character do we know who also went on to get catlike features? After the Euphoria drama she created along with her very creepy Instagram live behavior I now have very little respect for Doja Cat. She needs to stop worrying about other people's work and focus on herself.
@@aelinorholloway3669 Tigris, obviously! I personally don’t give af what Doja did on Instagram, I don’t keep up with her like that. What I do know however, is that a character in the Hunger Games did the cat face first. So before you talk to me like I don’t know wtf I’m talking about, do some research honey 😘
Was surprised by Cardi-B. Her playful 'posing' was on point. ~ Agree, Penelope Cru radiated quiet beauty & poise almost eclipsing the Lagerfeld theme ...
i LOVE your suggestion for reimagining the theme. you can pay homage to any of the other designers you mentioned who deserve to be recognized (esp the historically marginalized - truly unimaginative to honor one (1!) old white man in 2023 i stg), AND I imagine at least a couple people would acknowledge the huge loss of life we've experienced and appreciation for life we've gained over the last few years in the pandemic (1.16 million people dying ain't nothing and we need to start acknowledging and processing that)
as always, I love that you hit the nail on the head about what I end up liking in certain ensembles and finding frustration with. love how detailed and concise your review was 💯
I loved the Met Gala this year! Sometimes I think it's too gimmicky, or try-hard, this felt more natural and focused on the fashion. The detailing in the dresses were outstanding, even the boring ones. The whole thing was very Chanel in intensity, and for some reason everyone looked like they were having more fun and were more relaxed.
Your theme idea with memento mori/memento vivre and honoring various designers who passed away is superb, no idea how no one in charge of MET thought of that with Lagerfeld and Vivienne Westwood both dying in a short span of time.
Wow I am surprised by this take, although I really agree that there are way more interesting displays that occurred in the past, I still really enjoyed this met gala and appreciated that more people stuck to the theme this year.
@@sideshowmob I'd say that they're both extremely iconic, but it depends on what you're into in terms of style that might make one seem larger than the other.
6:30 I felt the same way! Dua looks PRETTY ofc, but I think they could’ve done more with the styling or at least recreated the ENTIRE LOOK from the show, hat and all!
I'm not a fan of Karl Lagerfeld style, so when I read the theme I was not happy at all 🙈 beside my personal preference I get the idea of celebrating an iconic figure of the industry, but for one (1!!) night you can ask absolutely anything to celebrities and stylists, you can let them truly express personality and talent through special and imaginative themes and yet they always came out with the most boring themes 😭 2018 met was incredible, why can't we have something like that every year?
I actually liked the theme a lot more then I thought I would once I had seen the looks, but that being said I'm a monochromatic girlie through and through so black and white is going to appeal to me a lot more then other people. I feel like the men did it more for me then a lot of the women too, I was a fan of the elongated jackets and accessories that elevated the basic suit and tied in Lagerfeld's personal style and/or Chanel a bit.
I'm all for giving points when due but the pearls look so reminiscent of her Playboy spread, and as Tessa mentioned Karl was known more for accessorizing with chains whereas pearls are what the Chanel look was *before* Karl arrived. personally I also think the spanx / shapewear corset looked tacky. all the Kardashians' looks were 🥱
the thom browne bunch looks fantastic. everyone in that group is high up on my ratings (except the two boring suits, sorry). also anne hathaway and billie eilish. honorable mention to charlotte tilbury because that dress is so pretty, and oliver rousteing because that bag is funny. least favorites are both kendall and kylie, alexandra daddario, dee hilfiger, and jodie comer
I said so many times while watching last night and picking my favorites "OMG so many men actually showed up with their assignment done!" First year ever where they were dressed better than the women.
Yaass, I was waiting for thiiiis, you are one of my favorite accounts that talk fashion 💖 Honestly? I liked the more subtly elegant outfits. At least in comparasion with the general debacle in the last years (with a few iconic exceptions), they stuck to the theme, respectfully while keeping it fun. For the most part, ofc. Men's outfits wise, I mean ... again, some amazingly cool, some just the good ol' black tuxedo, couldn't tell ya if its 200$ or 2000$, but i admit, hi, i'm the problem, it's me. I also pretend I do not see the carpet, it's full off white in my mind/black if i wanna use my imagination lol
Honestly, I loved Olivia Rodrigo's look, her hair was very Hepburn inspired, and I'm a sucker for fringe. Truthfully, I loved all of the Tom Brown looks. They were all very unique, but on theme. Something several brands couldn't achieve with just 1-2 looks. Outside of the Tom Brown looks, I really loved Conan Grey, Anok Yai, Anne Hathaway, and Adut Akech's looks.
For me, Boring is not the word I see. Seeing last years and the year before this is far from boring, This is actually one of the met gala where all of them kinda followed the theme. It was much more successful than the recent years so I really liked this year Actually. ❤
Following a very simple theme is very uninteresting and boring. Seeing how obscure themes are interpreted is far more imaginative and interesting even if not all celebs manage to follow it
I feel like the theme for the met gala like you said should be honoring many fashion designers who passed away and left a mark in the creativity for fashion. it would be amazing to see many recent different designers come up with ideas based on their favorite honorable fashion designers who passed away and were able to express how they felt when they first saw their work, worked with them, or even talked to them. that way it's memorable for not only those who passed away but for those who looked up to them and can see their influence affected them.
I totally agree with the Dua Lipa one, I loooove that dress and I was hoping someone would wear it, but I wasn’t ready for someone to be wearing ONLY it. She could’ve replicated the look with a hat and jacket or at least accessorised more.

THANK YOU. I looked at the pictures last night and hardly raised an eyebrow at any of them. Very few people looked ~bad, but there weren't any truly stunning outfits, either. Honestly, the thing that made me the happiest was seeing Ke Huy Quan!!
I think a Memento Mori theme would have been so incredible! I was so disappointed that Lady Gaga didn't attend this year.
She did tho...
@Nils Sjoberg She literally didn't. There are multiple articles written speculating why she didn't attend, and there are no photos... if you saw her in white chanel garb, it was a picture from 2011
@@radarmua2316 IT WAS FAKE? omg

Billie Eilish's look is so incredible!! the dress is so beautiful and the black hair fits her so much, what a serve!!
My fave red carpet look I’ve seen on Billie so far.
I was OBSESSED with Conan Gray's Balmain outfit !! Not only by the amount of pearls, the tweed and the gloves, but also by the fan which also signified his Japanese heritage !!
well also karl use to carry those types of fans too/become one of his signature accessories. so the fan Conan had, has to two meanings behind it! very smart on Conan's part!
for the afterparty he wore black big sunglasses which Karl used to wear and the mini "Karl who?" pin, so he was on theme/stylish all night
one of the best male looks for SURE! gorgeous, decorative, and thoughtful!
the lack of accessories left me flabbergasted honestly, i was so happy when you pointed out the fact that no one even bothered to throw on a necklace atleast 😒are they allergic to them? lmao
tbh I was kinda expecting more this year. The majority of people either wore archive chanel designed by Lagerfeld, which is on theme but uninspired. The other half of the majority did an interpretation of lagerfield's classic black and white suit, which some looked amazing doing. Both of these choices were fine, I just wish we saw more variety. Like where are the pearls, big gold accessories, and etc.
most dresses have pearls on it
Where were the bags
everyone decided to wear vintage worn by other important people after kim wore marilyn's dress hahaha its so unimaginative.
They chose to wear the accesories to the afterparty
@@soopersalad2509 it really is so unimaginative. like yayyy we've seen this before!
Next year should DEFINITELY be a Vivienne Westwood theme! There's so much more creativity and individuality that could be showcased!
I love the idea of the Momento Mori x Momente Vivere theme SO much it would be so good to honor the great minds of the fashion industry and besides I just have a weakness for black
DG DRAGON KING .
all of the outfits felt so reused🥲
of course everyone looked absolutely ethereal
Thank you for stating that KARL EQUALS CHUNKY CHAINS, not pearls!!! I understood the use of pearls when they were applied on a edgy way (like Anne Hathaway's dress, for example), but when people wore them like a conservative Chanel lady they completely missed!
So only "Conservative ladies" own Chanel and wear pearls? lol, ok.
@@ISayMusicYouSayYes When did I ever say that? What I meant was when people used them at the MET in a more traditional way, they were paying homage to Chanel under Coco's management, not exactly Karl's, which is different because they both had different approaches when it comes to fashion.

I think this has to be one of your best coverages of a red carpet event. I just love the way you broke down the looks and the artist and the things that were lacking but the things were that were also important.
i love how plus size people on the carpet wore pink - the color carl hated, to signify that we do not honor this man 💀
edit: yall are really annoying lmao
also lizzo posting that pic of her eating fries in her met gala look? she doesn’t care at all for that man’s ideologies and i love it 😭
Lizzo did not she wore something hideous
@@salamander8301 i was referencing other fat people and poc who did wore pink
@@salamander8301 although her look was a bit of a snoozefest, I wouldn’t call it downright hideous. let’s be honest here. @@-rianna it was hideous and stupid. She could have done better
thom browne’s looks are definitely some of the best. anne hathaway surprised me- she slayed. i agree with most of the points you made. i expected more.

@@yutisima They dont annoy me I just think seeing the same people every year gets boring, just wish to see more diversity in the gala thats all!
@@barbarasantos1206 yeah i think it was just the wording of the comment, with the being "excited" not to see someone somewhere, but i completely see your point
I’m impressed with how fast you pulled this video together. Well done!
I'm not a Lagerfeld, or Chanel, fan so a lot of references were lost on me. I just kept thinking 'Nice gowns, beautiful gowns.'
More impressed with the men this year than usual though.
Yeah the men really did some impressive job
The men are starting to be more bold. I LOVE IT. no more black and white suits please!
G DRAGON KING .
Her name is Anok Yai, and I agree! She killed it!!!
@@NYCFashionista56 Thanks for the name. She looked incredible.
Anne Hathaway's dress is chef's kiss totally on theme and she made that dress more elegant
I was so bumped that Blake Lively didn't go. As usually her Look would have been probably the most creatively on theme.
However Anne Hathaway did it on point. Not boring, you can see that Chanel inspired, but a bit less simple than Coco's Chanel. It was the most Creative interpratation of theme this year
We can all agree that Jared Leto is the most creative one this year.
@@PassionPno he just dressed as a furry... and with a super bland fursona at that.
Your idea for a theme would be amazing
11:30 to be fair, Lil Nas X did over-accessorize his face, so it's more accurate to say he grazed the edge of the target board rather than totally missing the mark entirely
I was sooo happy to see CJR’s dress created from the Vogue video. Thom Browne’s looks were breath taking and original so it brought back the old vibe of Met Gala see designers take inspiration and expanding on it. Olivia’s dress looked like that Prada platform boot to me.
I think Lil Nas X was doing his interpretation of Carl's cat. At least that's what I'm getting! And I like it!
☝This.
He was. You can see the whispers and shape of a cat nose. The issue is that no one could tell he was supposed to be a cat. The peak of theirs was badly done.
the point about "In Memoriam" was so good. the looks would've been so diverse, so eclectic, more inspired, and more interesting.
this a reach… most of the men actually tried this time!
Right! It seemed like they were tired of people talking about the basic black tuxes 😂
G DRAGON KING ,
11:31 I couldn’t figure out why I loved his past looks but not this one, but you verbalized it perfectly!
I loved Gisele’s look, and also Bad Bunny got me, I was at first like “okay white suit with camellias, not bad” and then I saw the back and loved it. Alexandra Daddario needs a whole new team. A whole new team.
Doja Cat was giving the Hunger Games with the face prosthetic and I love it!!!! 😍
I actually think this year was so much better
same. The did the best out of it when you keep in mind that the theme is pretty lame compared to other years
Was surprised by Cardi-B. Her playful 'posing' was on point. ~ Agree, Penelope Cru radiated quiet beauty & poise almost eclipsing the Lagerfeld theme ...
Boring AF
i LOVE your suggestion for reimagining the theme. you can pay homage to any of the other designers you mentioned who deserve to be recognized (esp the historically marginalized - truly unimaginative to honor one (1!) old white man in 2023 i stg), AND I imagine at least a couple people would acknowledge the huge loss of life we've experienced and appreciation for life we've gained over the last few years in the pandemic (1.16 million people dying ain't nothing and we need to start acknowledging and processing that)
I loved this Met Gala. Atleast they wore according to the theme
Cardi B rarely misses on a red carpet. It’s actually exciting to see what she’ll be wearing at an event!
Florence Pugh was one of my favorite looks of the night but Michaela Coel was my top pick. Especially those shoes!
as always, I love that you hit the nail on the head about what I end up liking in certain ensembles and finding frustration with. love how detailed and concise your review was 💯
Thom Brownes looks were my favourite, they were creative and still on theme!
Your proposed theme at the beginning sounds so interesting! Would have loved to see that
Most of the styling choices, or lack thereof, were really driving me crazy this year lol. My favorites were Janelle Monea and Anne Hathaway
This theme was mainly put there to make celebs and attendies rember how important being on theme is how impressive and cohesive they all look
Wow I am surprised by this take, although I really agree that there are way more interesting displays that occurred in the past, I still really enjoyed this met gala and appreciated that more people stuck to the theme this year.
Your ideas got the possible themes were exactly what needed to happen. The vibes would have been immaculate.
Why didn’t they go with punk: a dedication to Vivienne Westwood of something - yknow considering her death and impact on the fashion industry
I mean didnt the met have a punk theme already in recent times
The event was planned before her passing, to my understanding. Still, she should definitely be a theme inspiration in the near future!
Because Karl is a much larger icon than Vivianne
Because punk was the theme in 2013
@@sideshowmob I'd say that they're both extremely iconic, but it depends on what you're into in terms of style that might make one seem larger than the other.
6:30 I felt the same way! Dua looks PRETTY ofc, but I think they could’ve done more with the styling or at least recreated the ENTIRE LOOK from the show, hat and all!
I'm not a fan of Karl Lagerfeld style, so when I read the theme I was not happy at all 🙈 beside my personal preference I get the idea of celebrating an iconic figure of the industry, but for one (1!!) night you can ask absolutely anything to celebrities and stylists, you can let them truly express personality and talent through special and imaginative themes and yet they always came out with the most boring themes 😭 2018 met was incredible, why can't we have something like that every year?

damn gurllll, that is some quick editing
I actually liked the theme a lot more then I thought I would once I had seen the looks, but that being said I'm a monochromatic girlie through and through so black and white is going to appeal to me a lot more then other people. I feel like the men did it more for me then a lot of the women too, I was a fan of the elongated jackets and accessories that elevated the basic suit and tied in Lagerfeld's personal style and/or Chanel a bit.
The men that were on theme look spectacular! That's why I'm a bit annoyed with the men that didn't even try, they had no excuse this year.
My favorite met gala theme will ALWAYS be heavenly bodies. That one was 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
Giving credit where credit is due: Kim Kardashian was on theme with accessories including the chunk chocker and the endless pearls.
I'm all for giving points when due but the pearls look so reminiscent of her Playboy spread, and as Tessa mentioned Karl was known more for accessorizing with chains whereas pearls are what the Chanel look was *before* Karl arrived. personally I also think the spanx / shapewear corset looked tacky. all the Kardashians' looks were 🥱
Ummm... i thin moderngurlz should just run vogue now, or like, the industry in general. That in memorium,/appreciation for life theme idea is so great
The Met Gala 2023 was AMAZING and GORGEOUS. I RESPECT FOR THE OTHERS DESIGNER AND CELEBRITY ❤❤
i was waiting for this video since the theme announcement lmao
Doja Cat was my personal favorite 😻
I won’t forget it… even years to come !
A perrrr-fit tribute and I think Karl would have loved it 😸
I love how you got this video up so early your my favourite UA-camr
3:58 no because momento mori momento vivere would be an AMAZING theme
I too was underwelmed by the lack of accessories on most of the looks. kudos to the ones that were blinged out. i think gigi hadid was my fave
the thom browne bunch looks fantastic. everyone in that group is high up on my ratings (except the two boring suits, sorry). also anne hathaway and billie eilish. honorable mention to charlotte tilbury because that dress is so pretty, and oliver rousteing because that bag is funny. least favorites are both kendall and kylie, alexandra daddario, dee hilfiger, and jodie comer
I said so many times while watching last night and picking my favorites "OMG so many men actually showed up with their assignment done!" First year ever where they were dressed better than the women.
moderngurlz should come up with met gala themes from now on because thats a really good idea
Yaass, I was waiting for thiiiis, you are one of my favorite accounts that talk fashion 💖
Honestly?
Seeing how obscure themes are interpreted is far more imaginative and interesting even if not all celebs manage to follow it
some of my favourites this year were kim kardashian, cardi b, pheobe bridgers, anne hathaway and jennie kim
I think that having an in memoriam would have been much better and respectful to the other talents we have recently lost
Your so very knowledgeable and insightful especially on the choice of the theme!! Well done ma'am. This is the kind of educative unbiased reporting we luck today!!
Anne Hathaway was hands down best dressed in the best way to approach the theme
Praying that a Vivienne Westwood theme is next year, although, I’m scared that people are gonna slaughter it lmao
