Luke, Demi deserved credit for keeping the dress immaculate, by actually walking to the ceremony instead of getting in a car and creasing it. That's dedication to the fashion by our leading lady 😉 apparently the fabric was woven with metal thread in order to get that high shine.
My husband's slogan is "Black matches black." He has been absolutely disinterested in fashion. For the first time ever, he caught a glimpse of Coleman Domingo, and actually asked me to "go back to his entrance." He then asked me to pause. He was mesmerized. He snapped a pic of it on his cellphone. For the first time ever, he said, "I'd buy that. I could rock that." I was shocked. He's 60, but I think anyone who says, "I could rock that," perhaps could. I said I did not doubt he could. He praised each element in the same way I would! The Polka-dot shirt, the proportion of the bowtie, the contrast of patterns, the lapel pin, the fabric, the fit -- all of it. (Neither of us thought the fringe distracted. I see it as a moment of texture?) Hubs doesn't always buy my suggestions, but now I know he listens when I talk him into buying items for his wardrobe.

What I love about Zendaya on the red carpet is she is probably one of the best at knowing how to move and pose in whatever she is wearing, like supermodel levels, and even better than some supermodels imo. If you watch the way she poses on the GG carpet, you will see what I mean. It's like a switch goes on and she transforms, but it also looks like it comes so natural to her, it's like she's floating along the carpet. I love the way he gives fashion history, inspiration, explains design and garment construction, gives context. Really helps me to understand the outfit.
the squiggly ribbon trim on Matty Matheson's suit is rick rack / ric rac! I use it sometimes on my Indigenous ribbon skirts and ribbon trousers when I'm designing.
My aunt sewed the work uniforms for the New Zealand Tourist Hotel chain back in the 1960s/70s. The women’s dresses had ric rac around the necklines. Oh my gosh, I thought they were marvellous but as I got older and reflected, the lilac, bright green and other bright base colours of the dresses made in the style of Heidi for want of a better description, with their 2-3 rows of ric rac was a bold …and very dated…choice! 🐑🐑🇳🇿🇳🇿NZ
in French it is called "croquet" (or serpentine) ! it was very much up to date in the 60's and 70's for children or young girls (Brigitte Bardot) outfits .....
Ariana is beautiful, but is not picking outfits that do her justice. Her skin color looks sickly with all the yellow, and the shape swallows her body. The top sits heavy on her small frame. Just fits oddly. Beautiful woman, but her stylist isn't hitting.
exactly what i was thinking! her season colour palette leans more towards fall so a butter yellow isn't the most flattering. she would be better suited in more saturated earth tones
It is an old dress. Maybe the yellow used to be more vibrant. She said that Glinda liked yellow but I suppose it could also have an eternal sunshine connection. She also did mention in one interview an attachment of Eternal Sunshine that was made last year and is coming eventually.
Not to be rude but to me she looks unhealthy underweight. In past years she had more pounds and it suited her beautifully. She got all the cash to stop work and start being more healthy at nice private clinic no? Hope nickelodeons aftermath wont kill her. She is so young and Im not the only one worrying :/
The ONLY fashion commentator I can really listen to because he isn’t snarky or over reaching with his remarks. He doesn’t try to be overly “clever” or “original” by being mean or shocking. This is a person who isn’t afraid of fashion as art . Different and weird doesn’t scare him as long as it serves the clothes and I appreciate that. He may point out things he doesn’t like but never takes credit away from what does work. It’s such an objective critique. His attention to details is stellar. I like his little pops of humor too.
I’m a fairly recent subscriber of this channel and have noticed the animosity. Genuine question - is it just a dislike of Christian Siriano’s art or something else? I agree that some of the pieces are not great but I kind of like that he dresses a diverse mix of people. I’m not sure if other designers would work with JVN or Melissa McCarthy or Leslie Jones (I recall her saying for example that no other designer would work with her). I am loving this channel though. Luke does impressive research (I’m not a fashion expert at all) and explains things for a majority to understand, in an entertaining way. Plus he respectfully explains why he doesn’t like an outfit, which makes him appear very classy. 🤍
JVN is giving parent of the bride here. It’s simply a bad dress regardless of any characteristics of the wearer. Lose the side poofy thing and shorten it (tea length maybe?) and we’d have a conversation
@@reemtri its definitely his art, imo. hes never given me the impression that it is anything more. He is just very critical, and while I do not always agree with his views, I do agree with his opinions on CS designs.
@@reemtri just his art. Siriano is actually by all accounts a very good person, who has never shied away from working with unconventional celebrities, but Luke has expressed previously that he feels like Siriano‘s performance is usually quite bland. This dress on Jonathan just looks like it was assembled five hours before the gala.
Luke, your passion and knowledge of fashion is what makes your videos so interesting to watch. I always appreciate that you do your research and don't try to be deliberately unkind because you always have a good reason for your thinking. With so many fashion critic videos out there, you stand head and shoulders above them because you actually know and understand fashion in a very in depth way. Thank you
I loved Ladybird books when the girls were dressed up, usually Princesses as the pictures were always drawn with the character wearing the same colour shoes as their gowns (60's).Whenever I watch old Hollywood films when actresses are in gowns they are invariably wearing shoes to match no matter the colour. I've always loved that.
Hats off to the couturiers that created many of these stunning gowns. I'm loving the bias cut on the bodices and skirts and the salute to the vintage designs!
I love the way you point out all of the meticulous handwork of all of the crystals and beading! That takes hours and hours! For you to highlight it, gives such a wonderful acknowledgment to folks in the fashion industry that most people don't even think of! THANK YOU!❤️🩷🧡💛💚💙🩵💜
I’m not sure why Angelina Jolie has become so matronly. She’s so beautiful and has lost her vivacious essence. It makes me think she’s lost. She’s been playing it super safe.
I love you fan buying over Zendaya, she is truly classy. shows when she shows and has her own life too. has fun with her looks. it's all lovely. I think the reason why Zendaya and Cynthia are so good are because they HAVE IDEAS THEMSELVES so they work with the clothes, and portray the fun or drama of them, with their stylists. it' feels creative and fun.
As a teen, I used to watch House of Style and anything else I could find about fashion, now, I'm 53, still living in the middle of the country, still enjoying the ups and downs of the fashion industry. Thank you for reigniting my love for beautiful well made clothes.
I did not expect to CACKLE so loudly with your commentary on JVN. Lmao! "Wear a dress. Wear makeup. Just don't wear like an ugly dress or bad makeup. That's my issue" So accurate, cold and fair
Fantastic analysis of the looks! Very much appreciate your insight. One thing, I noticed, and my biggest issue with the Ariana Grande look, is that she has no waist. Contrast to the archival drawing you showed, where the drawn model has a very defined waist before the bottom bells out. There's a definite contrast between the slimness of chest into waist and the puffiness of the skirt, which makes the top of the skirt more appealing. Even in the image of Hepburn you showed, not the same dress, but again, defined waist, then the puffy top of the skirt. As worn my Ariana, it just looks like a maternity dress worn a few months too early. And the Anna Sawai dress...why can I see the seams, making it look like I, who can only just sew on buttons, made this dress?
You are always correct in all the details and overall nods, I cant believe how much I love you doing this. Grew up on Glamour magazine, no cable, then Vogue online for a while. You are the best.
You are very knowledgeable about fashion. You explain your rationale in a way that a lay person can also understand and appreciate. Informative, educational yet entertaining. Well done.
I loveee your passion about fashion, it translates into a huge knowledge of arts, culture, history, pop references…etc. You even make look the boring golden globes interesting. Big fan 💚
I didn’t even realize the Golden Globes were happening, but as soon as I saw posts about it popping up on Instagram, I immediately got excited for this video!
Angelina Jolie's look not only looks mother of the bride but fits like it; it looks very grandma to me. If it had been more fitted to her body AND had a hood it would have been lovely, but with it loose and basic it just looks aged. The banshee quality is completely lost. Zendaya brings old Hollywood glam in such a gorgeous color! I'm obsessed.
Luke you deserve to have a bigger audience. Your knowledge and interpretations are absolutely stellar and I hope to see you recognized more in the future ❤
Sorry, I’m commenting twice but whatever I feel this needs to be said… I 100% agree with Luke about Angelina Jolie missing the mark by not using the headdress scene on the runway along with her red carpet dress at least on the red carpet because it would’ve been iconic Especially coming from her and she’s one of the few women in Hollywood who can truly wear anything and make it work. Therefore they should be pushing the fashion boundaries and experimenting as much as possible while still keeping to aesthetic and expert stylist. I would think know how to do this, but Whatever this outfit for Angie, I’m wondering if they either aren’t creative enough to include or even suggest the headdress or if Angelina refused to wear it. I think she needs to be around people who get her not only out of the all black outfits which this is a step, but bring back that grit Angie had over Hollywood and show all the people that even if you’re a little little bit older in the Hollywood scene, you can still serve better than ppl half your age. I mean, she did it in costume but still when she was maleficent. She was a fashion icon, even though it was an obvious costume. If McQueen had made a veil that really showed off her face the way that the black headdress of maleficent I think that it would’ve been spectacular and with Angelina Jolie‘s eyes and face, it could’ve been one of the best red carpet looks in a couple years in my opinion
Luke, A+++ for the commentary. I love how you always include the style of the designer house and history to give each garment proper context. That takes a lot of knowledge, passion for fashion and research. I do not know anyone else who goes into such detail with each event and it is very appreciated!
I agree with you about Cynthia Erivo dress. She looked amazing. Zendaya was a knock out as always. I also loved the dress of Voila Davis. Now I don’t mind Jonathan Van Ness wearing a dress, but honestly a black bag would have looked better. It just looked ill fitting.
My main quibble with the black bow/belt on Margaret Qualley’s dress is that it already had a kind of subtle empire waistline and having two different waistlines feels like overkill but otherwise it was gorgeous as you said so I can’t complain too much
Zendaya reawakened the love of fashion I had as a little girl and is really the reason why I watch some of these red carpets. We will still talk about her when we are old. She has single-handedly brought about a paradigm shift on the Hollywood red carpet in my very humble opinion. This wasn’t even one of my favorite looks from her but she still manages to fail upwards. On the red carpet you can easily see people in clothes that are wearing them. Not Zendaya. The clothes never wear her, she always wears them and somehow still makes sure the designers and her team shines. She knows her season, she knows her body type and she knows her essences. Granted, it helps that she is naturally so versatile but she still knows when to tweak her appearance to be in harmony with her attire. She is spectacular. Cynthia Erivo gets honorable mention. She’s also great. I forget she’s bald all the time which is crazy because hair and makeup always go hand in hand and she’s missing an element but is still stunning.
Matty Matheson’s suit has ric rac trim. You could buy it at fabric stores in packets like bias or seam tape in the 50’s-80’s. I don’t really sew any more so don’t know if it’s still widely available. How could they do that to Kerry Washington!? She was overwhelmed by that amount of fabric wrapped around her! She deserved better! I’ve been eagerly waiting for your review…I had fun watching the looks & trying to guess what your reaction was going to be. At least I wasn’t off on Kerry! Love it as usual Luke!
Kerry Washington definitely deserves a better dress than that! She’s a petite woman and that dress overwhelmed her. Plus that color was just jarring. Too much dress and not enough Kerry.
21:39 the squiggles are rick-rack I think. My mom put some on my kindergarten picture day dress. Warm wishes from Minnesota! ❤️❤️❤️ May your pencils always be sharp and your colors never bleed.
1:59 the color is wrong for Ang, added to her hair color choice/style lately she just looks so drab and washed out. She is a beautiful woman but her facial/physical features NEED contrast to really showcase them! This is just sad and drab. At least wear an updo to create separation between hair and dress.
Gurl, part 2 better include Fernanda Torres, not only as the winner for Best Actress - Drama, but her dress (at least the front of it, from what I've read and heard) pays homage to the grief and struggles of the woman she interpreted in the movie I'm Still Here, Eunice Paiva, during Brazil's military dictatorship in the 60's, 70's and 80's, when her husband was taken and then "disappeared"; whereas the back and the slit of the dress are more Fernanda herself. You don't have to love or even like the dress, but don't ignore it...
and the whole styling was a modern update of the low key elegance of Brazilian women of those decades... a gorgeous flowy black dress with the right amount of sexiness, combined with her beachy hairstyle and minimalist jewelry, just perfect!!! a contrast from the sumptuous-botoxed-blond-hollywood standards
Zendaya and Selena were on another level, no one else came close. Perhaps Demi, but I don't think her hair and accessories did justice to the gorgeous gown.
Cute story about Anna Sawai. On the red carpet as she posed for photographers she was walking in the way similar to how Japanese people who wear/wore traditional geta shoes would, kind of shuffling. A rude photographer called out to her, "You're not on the show you don't have to do that anymore." She replied with a big smile "I know, I can't wrinkle my dress." Satin wrinkles so easily, I'm sure it got wrinkled later once she sat down, but she was determined to be wrinkle-free on the carpet.
Eeeee it’s finally time!!!! I started seeing pictures and instantly thought of you. I am SO (patiently) eager for your award season fashion commentary ☺️🎉
I agree the new version of cate blanchett’s dress is more successful than the original way she wore it, it’s stunning! Also I think Ariana’s dress would look a little better if you chose one of the pics from the green background, not sure why there were two different backgrounds but either way still not my favorite dress so oh well
I love that Luke spent so much time on Cynthia's dress because I really loved it, and I love that Luke is able to explain WHY it works and why it's just a great look. I don't even mind the lack of necklace. The dress has so much going on already.
The issue with JVN’s dress is that it was made to conceal and reveal a female form, so it fights with his shape. It doesn’t do any favors for him, and doesn’t allow the dress to do what it was designed to do. Dresses have evolved for the female form, if men are going to wear dresses they need to either go the whole female way and create a female shape, OR completely redefine how a dress looks on them. Ultimately it really doesn’t matter, how someone looks, but this is an image industry and his dress may not have been giving the vibes he was aiming for.
I was getting flashbacks to some of the Project runway challenges, where they make outfits for real people 😂 this one is giving me draped directly on the model an hour before runway ☠️
Cate Blanchett contuing to re wear clothing like a normal person does makes me like her so much. Way to set an example; I wish she'd start a trend.

Viola’s dress is amazing, and her hair is absolutely gorgeous.
Why did they change it later thoooo the look inside was not flattering neither was the light 😢
I went to high school with someone named Rick Rack in the heyday of that squiggle in the 70s
It was standard trim on little girl clothes in the fifties and sixties.
I recognized it too! I’m from Alaska and it’s a common trim for atikluk.
“Violently neon pink” I’m dying 🤣🤣🤣 you’re perfect. thank you soooooo much hahah I love you
I was cracking up too lmfao
Ariana is beautiful, but is not picking outfits that do her justice. Her skin color looks sickly with all the yellow, and the shape swallows her body. The top sits heavy on her small frame. Just fits oddly. Beautiful woman, but her stylist isn't hitting.
Her dress in a nice color would have been better.
exactly what i was thinking! her season colour palette leans more towards fall so a butter yellow isn't the most flattering. she would be better suited in more saturated earth tones
It is an old dress. Maybe the yellow used to be more vibrant. She said that Glinda liked yellow but I suppose it could also have an eternal sunshine connection. She also did mention in one interview an attachment of Eternal Sunshine that was made last year and is coming eventually.
@@catkin-z8gthe color is the worst part but it’s not like the dress and the styling helped at all. She looks like a kid at a wedding here
Not to be rude but to me she looks unhealthy underweight.
Your disdain for Christian Siriano is so entertaining. Please don’t stop
I loved christian siriano on project runway and I like what I've seen of him as a person now but his dresses are so hit or miss
Zendaya's outfit was indeed perfect, especially the matching shoe, hair, and fabulous necklace.
Why is golden globes lowkey the best event? Allll of the celebrities are there! I love mixing tv and film for an event
Its more like a dinner party. Everyone loves going. Plus, GG usually get it right...unlike Oscars.
@@brandonaldaymachuse6669agree, the oscar’s are such a shame. it only pretends to be everything it claims to be.
Thank you
The matching colored shoes has me dreaminggggggg … a throwback to old Hollywood glamour that’s beautiful and refined and pleasant to see again.
Also tailoring. Zendaya’s dress fit impeccably. Credit to the fashion house because the work they put in showed up in every exquisite detail.
@ agree!!
Matching colored shoes were in style in the early 80’s too.
THANK YOU!❤️🩷🧡💛💚💙🩵💜
I would never have known because of the photos you see online. As a quilter, I lov e to see that beautiful detail.
Zendaya ROCKS this dress, giving off old Hollywood glamour vibes ala Gene Tierney. GORGEOUS!
zendaya looks PHENOMENAL. the silhouette of her dress makes me think of audrey hepburn's iconic givenchy ballgown in the classic movie 'sabrina'
When I tell you that part of why I love award season is for your videos! You're an icon, a legend, and forever the moment!!
Same. I get really excited for them
@@85ldbaileyme too! I love Luke’s quirky and funny humor and his knowledge of fashion is just insane..
He’s actually knowledgable and articulate.
I love that you brought up Joyce Bryant! She was _everything!_ Love your knowledge of fashion history! ♥️♥️♥️
Viola's Gucci black dress looked like a butterfly. 🦋🦋🦋
Colour of Zendaya's dress is so stunning!
As a teen, I used to watch House of Style and anything else I could find about fashion, now, I'm 53, still living in the middle of the country, still enjoying the ups and downs of the fashion industry. Thank you for reigniting my love for beautiful well made clothes.
Cate Blanchett is one of the very few top stars that rewears her outfits and I love it ❤
Yes, I loved Ayo's look! An interesting and nicely tailored suit with a really fun necktie, she looked so cute in it.
“Just don’t wear an UGLY dress and UGLY makeup.” Brutal. … but true.
Only reason why I care abt awards season is for the HauteLeMode fashion reviews!!!
Ditto 100%!!!
I did not expect to CACKLE so loudly with your commentary on JVN. Lmao! "Wear a dress. Wear makeup. Just don't wear like an ugly dress or bad makeup. That's my issue" So accurate, cold and fair
Johnathan Van Ness looks like he’s cosplaying as Teri Hatcher and I do not mean that as a compliment
😂😂😂
@@JarrodConrad 🤣 que malo...
I agreed with you 100%! Amazing! The only slight fly in the ointment was that Elle Fanning wasn't in your best dressed call out. LOL
Oooooo , I was waiting for this! Let's Go!
I love how articulate you are about why you like or don't like things.
Zendaya WOW she looked like classic Hollywood glamour so beautiful.
You cannot convince me Kerri Washington isn't wearing a bedsheet. And that's sad because she's great
A bedsheet straight from the laundry basket! 😂
The squiggles are Ric Rac. The staple of every handmade dress of my childhood 😊
Me too. Not Western. Makes me think of my grandma and all the dresses she made me.
Not only see that seam, but the seam didn't even look properly pressed!
Big fan 💚
4:12 I absolutely cannot stand that very pronounced visible seam running down the side of her skirt
I didn’t even realize the Golden Globes were happening, but as soon as I saw posts about it popping up on Instagram, I immediately got excited for this video!
I love the color of Kerry Washington’s dress, I love a brown skinned woman in hot pink, but the draping just looks like a duvet.
Sleeves wrong, length wrong, shoes ohhhno.
Loved seeing Zendaya in a gorgeous warm color, it suits her.
Yes! She looks incredible in warm colors and I wish she’d take advantage of it. Same with Beyoncé.
angline jolie's dress was giving mother of the bride to me. she looks beautiful but thats still the vibe im getting
annnnnnd you said that seconds after i typed this lmao
Agree. She's dressed matronly for many years.
Its because shes not feeling it, the event, the dress. It shows.
Actually hard DISAGREE she looks so good and elegant
Luke you deserve to have a bigger audience. Your knowledge and interpretations are absolutely stellar and I hope to see you recognized more in the future ❤
Ayo looked amazing! I love red carpet suits on women

@@clarecatherine8387 Muppets are the new Dalmatian’s
Underrated comment!! 😂
I watch the red carpet, pick my favorites and then come here to find out why I’m wrong. 😂
GIRL I WAS WAITING!!!😂 checked this morning and was so bummed. This saved my day.
Me too! I clicked on another review. Thought it was him and it wasn’t!!! Big disappointment.
My main quibble with the black bow/belt on Margaret Qualley’s dress is that it already had a kind of subtle empire waistline and having two different waistlines feels like overkill but otherwise it was gorgeous as you said so I can’t complain too much
Viola looks like a beautiful disco butterfly!! Love it!!
I actually LOVE how aggressively pink Kerry’s dress is, the styling is perfect imo, but it really is a heeeeavy garment. Soooo much fabric up top
my first thought when i saw angelina jolie’s dress was “i’ve seen this at macy’s”
😂😂😂
Miss you so it’s nice to see your post and great critique. So appreciated!
@@Jmittle101 yes!
21:39 the squiggles are rick-rack I think. My mom put some on my kindergarten picture day dress. Warm wishes from Minnesota! ❤️❤️❤️ May your pencils always be sharp and your colors never bleed.
Ruck rack is perfect for a 1950s kindergarten picture day dress! It had its day…should not have been resurrected.IMO.
Came here to say ricrac! (Also spelled rick rack)
Correct.
Childhood memories evoked. ❤
1:59 the color is wrong for Ang, added to her hair color choice/style lately she just looks so drab and washed out. She is a beautiful woman but her facial/physical features NEED contrast to really showcase them! This is just sad and drab. At least wear an updo to create separation between hair and dress.
The way I've been refreshing UA-cam. Thank you 😭😭😭
🧡Zendaya is the 👑Queen of the red carpet🧡
Oh, I LOVE this! I hope he knows (or sees this comment)!
Marty Matteson’s suit was trimmed with Rick Rack a very old fashioned trim popular from the 30s especially to the 50s with home sewers.
Erivo, I love it! Oh those sequences! Blanchett nailed it too, she thought, this dress is too important not to be up-cycled!
I think I would really like Jolie's if it was gold instead. I just think she looks better in warmer colors
Agree
Same
I LOVE that Cate Blanchett upcycled a previously worn dress. She looked gorgeous as usual.
Love Ayo's tie too. Looks like it's from the LOEWE men's collection ss25
I was more excited for this video than the actual show itself
18:20 Johnathan Van Ness looks like he’s going to a Toga party 😂😂😂
I was getting flashbacks to some of the Project runway challenges, where they make outfits for real people 😂 this one is giving me draped directly on the model an hour before runway ☠️
