Late to this party, but I agree
In a perverse way, many of the failures did highlight the darker side of America/American fashion, right?
      - Ignore Native Americans
      - steal from POC without even an acknowledgement
      - claim you're the land of the free but be slaves to contracts (that force you into boring outfits and/or refuse you healthcare or maternity leave)
      - "it's expensive, and that's my inspiration"
      - as you said, the dismal, horrifying level of education : "this is an ode to an actress from the wrong continent, acting in a movie set in the wrong country, because I love the designer that didn't work on this film"... all of which is stuff you can find in Google's preview of the Wikipedia page

I'm surprised nobody did a micheal jackson inspired look considering hes one of the most famous American entertainer in the world and still continues to make money till this day. 🤯 MTV's (racist) color barrier was broken by Michael Jackson's stardom; the network was essentially forced into playing "Billie Jean," which became a massive success and helped bolster the struggling network. He broke Racial Barriers and Opened doors for Artists of Color. I could list more achievements but it would take me a long time 🔥
    Fun fact:
Jackson made history when he became the first artist to win eight GRAMMYs in one night at the 26th Annual GRAMMY Awards on Feb. 28, 1984. The King of Pop's haul included Album Of The Year for Thriller and Record Of The Year for "Beat It." Jackson is among the artists with the most GRAMMYs won in the '80s with 11. And of course he invented the moonwalk and ran almost 2 decades of #1 hits.

I think people making it more complicated than it is. I'm guessing people can't take a step back and take a look at what is visually a specifically American look because they're americans or americanized, who live in that very bubble, similar to how many people can't perceive current time's fashion and believe there is no specific look/trends atm.
You can do victorian meets cowboy if cowboy is too literal. Those 2 eras did happen at the same time.
You can be a glamorous Lady Liberty! This is so easy and effortlessly chic. How come no one thought of this?
Make these your focal point or Incorporate any of these elements: Denim, Stars+Stripes, The American Color Scheme, Bandanna, Baseball(the quintessential retro american sport). You can apply that to the makeup, the details & accessories if an american outfit is too much for you, so idk a smeared star-shaped glittery eyeshadow or a necklace with stars wrapping around your neck, i think it sends a bold message that you got the stars choking you lol. People are making it unnecessarily hard. It's fashion, where is the creativity?

@@NaNa-wy2tk the designers are responsible for the outfits so if you are talking about a lack of creativity in the outfits you are mainly talking about the designers not the celebrities.
Most of the European designers aren’t Americanized they just didn’t try with the theme. Look at everyone who was dressed by YSL who just wore straight off the runway looks. Are you telling me all of his designs are Americanized now? Cause if that’s the case then I don’t want to hear anything anymore about how European fashion is superior since apparently everyone is just Americanized now…
And no I don’t think you have to be from the U.S to be Americanized but I don’t think that’s a proper reason to explain why the looks weren’t good. They weren’t good because of a lack of effort not because of American centrism if anything if all the designers were completely Americanized the looks would have been a lot different..there would have been a lot more historical references and cowboy crap, American flags and what not but no that’s not what happened here.
The theme was too vague and I am saying that because I feel as though when people have too much choice they choose nothing.
I feel as though the same thing would have happened if the theme was Simply French Fashion or European fashion in general. There’s just so much to choose from and not enough guidelines tbh
Like a lot of the brands at some point played a role in American fashion and it’s crazy to me that some of them literally couldn’t think of a single damn thing besides prom looks.

@@friv_0881 I totally agree. God - until I finally broke down and allowed myself to go on social media, I'd never heard of a 'Kardashian'. And I've yet to figure out just what it is they do. As you so well put it - money and bought success over skill, merit, or class. And the clothes evoked very little in the way of expressing much to do with either American history, its People, or its fashion. The fact that it has just become a rich celebrity 'thing' sort of flies in the whole face of the object of the fundraising - to keep the Met open and free to all.

Looks that could have been served instead of whatever hot mess showed up:
    1. Imagine a sari inspired by the Statue of Liberty
    2. A look inspired by Lady Justice, a figure that appears on the emblem of countless US courthouses and legal departments. A super easy look if you were adamant about looking "pretty".
    3. We could have had a look inspired by 18th-century American fashion. This year's Met Gala featured no powdered wigs, tricorn hats, bedgowns or robe à la françaises. I think Lili Reinhart's dress was a great idea but had okay execution. It would have benefitted from a robe à la française shiloutte.
    4. Madison Beer should have done a recreation of a Jane Fonda look. Her makeup and hair at the Met Gala was a dead-on recreation of Fonda in the early 60s. Huge missed opportunity.
    5. A recreation of any of the looks worn by pioneering Chinese-American actress, Anna May Wong. Not only are like 75% of them Met Gala worthy, but it would also bring light to an actress whose career was stifled by racism. Bonus: her career woes are still relevant these days.
    6. A recreation/look inspired by Brittany Spears and Justin Timberlake's double denim look at the 2001 AMA's. Imagine Camilla Cabello and Shawn Mendes doing this!
    7. A recreation of a Claire McCardell evening gown, a super important American fashion designer and a revolutionary figure in American sportswear. She was literally the first designer mentioned in the Vogue video Hamish Bowles did on this year's Met Gala theme. Why no one watched the video before they went to the Met Gala is beyond me.
    8. Give us 1930-50s glam with a Mainboucher look. If you want to be controversial or iconic, do a recreation of Wallis Simpson's wedding dress to King Edward VII!. The dress is literally at the Met so you have no excuse.
    9. Do a look inspired by '60's space-age, complete with plastic textiles and clear baubles. Even the look is mostly associated with European designers such as Pierre Cardin or Andre Courrèges, you can use NASA logos and Courrèges was invited by NASA because of his interest in space travel.
    10. For all the boring men who still wanted to wear suits, they could have paid homage to early American cinema (early talkies or silent films) by choosing to recreate the look of leading men such as Rudolph Valentino, John Gilbert, Sessue Hayakawa or Ramon Novarro.
