She had a lot of shoes starting pretty early. As a kid, her dream was to own a shoe shop. She took it all very seriously. As a teen, she worked in a shoe store and freaking loved it! Not kidding. She sent herself bankrupt in her early 20's over-shopping shoes but has been following a strict budget for ten years now. She has a massive shoe collection but for record, it's well organized, she doesn't have any doubles and they're well cared for. When she falls out of love with a pair of shoes, she sells it and because she takes excellent care of her shoes and has so many, a lot of them look like she never wore them. I did worry about her when she got a part-time job at a shoe shop while she was on mat-leave. Her husband gave up and built a room in the basement for her collection years ago. While it's true it's unrealistic, SATC is a love letter to complicated female friendship, relationships and New York City itself. It's a fairy tale for adults, not realism for realism's sake. Notice how we never/rarely hear about the girls' parents or home lives pre-adult hood? In my headcanon I believe Carrie had parents that were well to do, and set her up with a nice apartment. She mentions buying vogue over food because it "fed me more" so money has *been* an issue for her. Perhaps she makes only enuff to cover her apartment realistically but then again she has like zero savings in the middle seasons. Like I said fairytale lol. How can buy all those shoes and have zero savings *and* live in that apartment, buy all those clothes AND afford to eat out 89% of the time?

I love Samantha. She is always so loyal to her girls. Forever my favorite 💗 Ps.: I know it is not the main purpose of the video but this is one of my favorites scenes from the show. Sorry 🤷🏻♀️💕 Sorry for my bad english 😁
I like how SJP isn't that pretty but watching her in SatC makes her pretty in a weird way. She is so confident and has a killer body. And she doesn't compromise for no one. She doesn't even care that some of her outfits look crazy. She's wearing them like it's nothing.
Side note: Gold jewelry wasn't really "in fashion" in the late 90s/2000. It was all about minimalism, Y2K, silver, stainless steel, etc. which further emphasizes Carrie's (and probably the writers') classist distain for it as fine jewelry.
Uhm...Gold jewelry was in style in the working classes and Latin America for this very reason. Latinos associate frivolous or showy wealth as status symbols, it’s why nails, plastic surgery, hair color and flashy fashion is also hugely popular in the group as opposed to the more quiet American market that prefers to demonstrate their wealth through practical accessories like bags, shoes and jackets. Shoes, bags and jackets are the most expensive practical stuff in the fashion market but Latinos hate them they can’t change them often since they associate the ability to embrace trendy looks as a luxury and style instead of praising individual style.
Carrie’s irresponsible spending is actually relatable. Most people either is or knows someone who would rather spend their money on wants then needs and be broke lol.
Honestly the black and white outfit from the Paris episode and that light teal tutu dress are just... UGH SO DAMN GORGEOUS. The polkadot dress with light blue undergarment and dark blue velvet coat from Paris is peak Carrie as well. The outfit she wears when Charlotte's baby is born is also so pretty, that jacket i need it. You know, for someone who hates this show, I kind of love all the outfits in it!
@@NirvanaIsMyDrugg I hate to say it but it’s true. Samantha would’ve been a more believable friend of Blair Waldorf than Carrie who’s crazy suburban. At first I hated her guts but eventually understood she was a creature of her environment and her behavior came through a wanting to survive and understanding of reality. Claire was far from fantasious, she made it her goal to understand the game of life to stay in the life she grew up in and I thank the show every day for showing this in a beautiful manner. Serena was a good buffer to her as someone who was blessed in every way and will frankly always stay there due to being an apex predator of humanity. The whole system is rigged for Serena’s in the upper class.
Still to this day one of my favourite things about this show is how BOLD the fashion is, and how unafraid the characters are to embrace their personal styles. Even though some of the outfits are truly shocking, it's would still be fun to watch the show with the sound off, because of how outrageous the fashion is. I will never forget this one outfit Carrie is wearing a simple shirt and what appears to be a gorgeous green skirt, and then she turns around and it has this really BIZARRE tulle thing on the back, I literally burst out laughing. The weird outfits only make the good ones more iconic.
Definitely had a lot of outdated elements as a show, and many people’s favourite characters have changed in retrospect. However I still enjoy it, and the topics they discussed were ahead of their time
I've just binged the whole series not so long ago and I've become obsessed with the outfits that the girls are always wearing. So I'm super glad that you've decided to make a video on that subject. Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
The white dress Carrie wears to the black and white ball the night her and Aiden officially break up. Her hair and dress was amazing!! That's just one of my faves!!
Carrie’s red dress she wears when she bring the French fries to Bigs when he’s moving to France will always be my fav and I wish I could pull something like that off
@@LivLaugh Speak for yourself lmao I never did. I found a lot of the 2000s trends so trashy as a millennial growing up in them. I think the only one I really embraced were jeans and sweaters with skateboarding shoes in the late 00s because it was comfy. Yes h and the juicy couture track suit in the icy colors. Looking back I actually wish I did embrace more of the trends back then. It looked like so much fun. I grew up in suburban New England and had a snobbish contempt for the awkward fashions, especially because they were so outlandish like the whole Ugg boots.
That last episode tutu inspo dress is the iconic one for me; it screams "disney princess moment" and I think its remarkable in it's simplicity but elegance. A lot of her Paris wardrobe is excellent.
I'm amazed how thorough this video is. It's a great analysis of the series and its fashion. On top of that, you've used the appropriate clips from the show itself to explain the different fashion trends.
For me Carrie was seen as the most stylish of the show, because of her love for fashion and stuff but the reality was that Samantha was the BEST dressed of the serie. Bold, authentic, colorful, we stan💅🏻
I feel like every decade was iconic except the 2010s. Like... the only things that characterized it were adidas shoes, cold shoulders, and colored skinny jeans. Can you do a video on how un-iconic the 2010s were? Like... the 2020s are already 5 times as iconic and they do have a real vibe... just me?
When I was a teen in early 2000s I thought they were totally uniconic and that there could never be a comeback of the 2000s because they were so uncharacteristic xD
So happy that you touched on the Urban influence in the early 2000's. People often forget about brands like baby phat who mixed both high end and street wear and also set trends which made it into mainstream. Definitely subbing to this channel
My mom used to watch this show all the time and I remember when I was little I was just intrigued and fascinated by all the styles. Oh, and I guess that hard drive situation worked out😏❤️
Omg I LOVE an exposed lace/mesh bra. I do it all the time. It just adds a more sensual, fun look to my outfit for me. I just feel more feminine and sexy when I know I’m wearing lingerie beneath my jeans haha.
That’s VERY different from the way it was work back in the 2000’s 🤣 it was a plain ol underwire bra, similar to the one we all have hidden away and never get rid of because it’s so comfy. And they’d show off the straps, or let it peak out in front or through the arm holes of your shirt. It’s exactly what you’d imagine you’d look like after a bar fight on a night out clubbing 😂
I remember why that was - bras were shit and clothing cuts were equally as shit - it was like a curse and often not intentional - whatever you wore, stuff peaked out. It got normalized as it was unavoidable but I remember so many times I wished my stupid bra wasn't showing through my stupid tank top :(
I normally never comment on UA-cam videos. However, this video is so amazing and so detailed and well researched. SATC is my favorite show and I watch it twice a year and I watch it for the characters, but mostly for this fashion. Only recently have I tied together the trends that you've mentioned here, but you go above and beyond to linking it to its contemporary runway shows (Galliano, Calvin Klein, Helmut Lang). I've always been impressed with your videos, but this IS chefs kiss. The Ratatouille of fashion on UA-cam. Yay!!
I appreciate the info you added about name plate necklaces. Hearing Carrie call it "ghetto" made me cringe. This scene highlighted the difference between Culture appropriation and Culture appreciation when I saw it.
Omg I found sex and the city like 3 years ago when I was broke and living in north jersey and working after college- I had no idea the same designer was responsible for the amazing shoes as the shoes in my favorite movie: Marie Antoinette (2006)!!!! Thank you for this incredible video!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for highlighting the last but about the necklaces. I think that's what it boils down to, acknowledging where the trend/fashion statement came from.
I remember watching this as kid because of the fashion. I've always been into fashion so seeing Carrie walk down the streets wearing lavish outfits was something that I loved. Eventhough now that I look back, what the hell was I doing watching this show at such a young age?
Patrica Field did an amazing job, I remember watching this show I my early teens and made me experiment more with fashion, and try things on that I never thought would actually suit me. But it is strange to re-watch SATC and Seinfeld and Friends now, eesh. I think if I didn't have nostalgia for them that I wouldn't be able to make it through. So, this might be a stupid suggestion, but I would love to see a look at Cary Fetman - he's the stylist for The Bachelor/ette, it's so interesting; all the first episode dresses, all season clothing, rings, engagement dresses and how it's evolved over time and how a season like Emilys (classic, high fashion) vs a season like Hannah B (youthful, 90's fashion).
I instantly know which Carrie outfit is my favourite... its a pink knit top, multi colour stripe skirt, and a red jacket. There is a broach of some sort... I think its a heart. She wears it at the begging of season 5, when she goes to see Miranda after she's had Brady and is struggling in her Mummy Bubble. And then Carrie wonders around New York on her own and her skirt flies up in a gust of wind a la Seven Year Itch. I love it because its so my style. Give me a cute knit and a big skirt any day of the week! As for Carrie's style, I love her unconventional use of accessories, particularly silk scarves; I love me a silk scarf. I also think her newspaper print Dior dress is iconic, and the outfit she wears on Big's last night in New York is just divine. I personally appreciate the fashions most in seasons 4 and 5. Its when they started stepping it up, but before they went ridiculous in season 6. The fashions are AMAZING in season 6, but they lose touch with reality and become an aspiration dream sequence, rather than the gritter realism of the original conceit. Season 4 and 5 were the sweet spot
I was in my early 20s, we were so excited every Friday night in the summer to rush home to watch SATC! Another style we went crazy for was the horseshoe necklace (I still wear one lol) We mainly wore silver jewelry back then!
I’d love to hear your take on various HS focused shows and very fashionable movies like Gossip Girl, Marie Antoinette, and Memoirs of a Geisha since I’ve seen them referenced in your other videos.
I always loved the way Carrie exposed a little bra. It seemed effortless but also accessible, because it wasn’t super polished. The fact she slept in a wired/moulded bra though will never not be weird.
Patricia Feild is such a queen. Everytime I watch it I forget that it was filmed in the late 90s-early 2000s because I remember the fashion being HORRIBLE.
Patricia Fields is a legendary costume designer who really proved herself not only with "Sex and the City" but also with "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Confessions of a Shopaholic."
Also she had one store on 8th st (between 5th Ave. & University Pl. - I cannot remember the exact number), as well as stores at 306 Bowery and in the East Village, that was the go to point from the '70's to '11 fortunately mostly only known to correctly informed persons across all the various social economic ranges of the time for spot on fashion/trends of the moment at affordable prices.
I have owned my names plate from the early 90's and my sister got her in the 80's in fact almost all of the Italian women in my family have gotten up as they came to age.
I always feel like a lone-wolf saying this, but I liked Charlotte's style the best. I'm gay, and all the characters were fabulously-outfitted in their own ways, but I've always just really liked classically-feminine looks. Dress however you want, of course; but if it were me, I'd take Charlotte's looks any day. I mean, I live for 90s/early 2000s preppy fashion anyway and am always in a cardigan or sweater-vest, so maybe that's just me. xD
I will never be over her pregnancy style in the first SATC movie, especially the polka dot swing dress with the pink raincoat when she sees Big and goes into labor
Love this! I’ve been binging Sex and the City lately and it’s led to sooo much online shopping!! I would love to see a video on the fashion in Gossip Girl - I feel like Blair and Serena’s looks encapsulate every 2000s girl’s dream wardrobe!
My mother (gen x) introduced me to this show while saying "Listen, my dear, this show taught me several lessons and helped me cope with a lot of things when I was a young adult. So now it's time for you and I to watch it together!". To this day, when we want to relax together we just watch "Sex and the City" and discuss how some things are still relevant or complain about Carrie's character development. P.s.: this show definitely needs more attention from young adults of this generation
Omg that's so cute and good way of parenting! Teaching a child about life through a fun show. Now I know what I'm gonna do with my daughter one day when I have her and she grows up :') haha And I agree, definitely needs more attention!
I love your channel because you do such a good job of breaking down the cultural significance of shows like this and the historical side to it all. I love learning about the history of fashion and do that in such an entertaining way that it hardly feels like learning keeping me interested and never bored. 💙

I always thought that her reaction was just to have a justification to leave the baby shower
I like how SJP isn't that pretty but watching her in SatC makes her pretty in a weird way. She is so confident and has a killer body. And she doesn't compromise for no one. She doesn't even care that some of her outfits look crazy. She's wearing them like it's nothing.
It really goes to show how confidence is everything and will make a person more attractive.
I once heard her described as a "pocket-sized supermodel", and I think that's pretty accurate.
She is THAT pretty tho
She's prettier than like 59% of the world. All we see now are plastic surgery and filter faces.
Yesss her body is fucking amazing ✨
@@anamarte7547 killd them
Carrie’s irresponsible spending is actually relatable. Most people either is or knows someone who would rather spend their money on wants then needs and be broke lol.
Initially Carrie had a thrift store aesthetic. THEN came the designer shoes, THEN the stupidly out of control couture
The Paris outfit with the light blue undergarment....Love, love LOVE.
i want long hair just so i can crimp it
OMG Damon the icon watching a video about one of the most iconic series!
Do a video about Blair Waldorf!!
She is not Carrie honey 💅
@@juansebastiangonzalezlegui3526 yeah, she's better
Thank you for including the history and giving African Americans credit for their contributions.
Please do a video on underwear as outerwear! I'd love to see that especially because I love slip dresses and corsets. :)
Yes, this video reminded me of how much I love that slip dress trend! (❤️ 90s era Drew Barrymore)
honestly - it was a cultural reset
THANK YOU for addressing the cultural origins of the gold nameplate necklace.
I had a silver nameplate necklace in the 70s.
@@sabrinan4792 yeah and so did a lot of black women back then:
Don’t forget the door knocker earrings with the names in them too😁
Still to this day one of my favourite things about this show is how BOLD the fashion is, and how unafraid the characters are to embrace their personal styles.
Charlotte - "She stole my baby name!"
Samantha - "U BITCH"
I LOVE THIS SCENE😂
Every one needs a loyal friend like Samantha, too bad they are so hard to find in real life. Thus the popularity of the show I guess. 🤔
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Never liked Carrie’s character cause she was really toxic (imo). BUT her STYLE! Every little thing about her was perfect 💘
I agree. I thought she wasn't a good friend, but her style was insane.
Is it just me or i always remember the title as "Sex in the city"
The Mandela effect Lol
Yeah I did too lol
OMG I'm not the only one
Well, it was translated "Sex in the City" in my language, so that's how it'll stay in my head ☺️
That’s because u people r children
The white dress Carrie wears to the black and white ball the night her and Aiden officially break up. Her hair and dress was amazing!! That's just one of my faves!!
Carrie’s red dress she wears when she bring the French fries to Bigs when he’s moving to France will always be my fav and I wish I could pull something like that off
It’s a beautiful dress. Looking at your profile pic I don’t understand why you can’t pull it off.
And who is guilty of the skirt over jeans trend? I need the names!!
@@Aster_Risk Same! We all got caught in some strange bad taste hive mind
I was kind of a punk 12 year old in 2003 so wearing a plaid skirt over my jeans felt edgy at the time. I got bullied over it but I loved it lol
My older sister used to wear them and I stole them to wear at my middle school 😂
I...I was really skinny, so dresses were too short and I needed something to wear under them...😔🤚
That last episode tutu inspo dress is the iconic one for me; it screams "disney princess moment" and I think its remarkable in it's simplicity but elegance. A lot of her Paris wardrobe is excellent.
1:13 Reminds me of when Cher got mugged.
Alaïa
An awhata?!
it’s like a totally important designer 😞
I LOVE that scene, her counting on the ground gets me every time!
“Ghetto for fun” smh... this is why representation is so important behind the scenes as well as on camera. Appreciate you for always being real girl
I'm amazed how thorough this video is. It's a great analysis of the series and its fashion. On top of that, you've used the appropriate clips from the show itself to explain the different fashion trends.
Please do iconic hair colors like ramona flowers , run lola run etc.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Ramona is not iconic. They put her the most awful wigs ever
@Personal Jesus I just wish the wigs were better.
The fact that you acknowledged and highlighted the true origins of nameplate necklaces made me so happy
For me Carrie was seen as the most stylish of the show, because of her love for fashion and stuff but the reality was that Samantha was the BEST dressed of the serie. Bold, authentic, colorful, we stan💅🏻
The newspaper dress was my favourite along with her wavy, slightly messy hair.
Samanthas pink and black jumpsuit in the “I’m sorry. I can’t. Don’t hate me” episode!! Iconic 💗💗
By the way, this was an A+ video essay on SATC's costume design. Great stuff.
15:32 "ghetto gold" oof ... a whole clown lol
I feel like every decade was iconic except the 2010s. Like... the only things that characterized it were adidas shoes, cold shoulders, and colored skinny jeans. Can you do a video on how un-iconic the 2010s were? Like... the 2020s are already 5 times as iconic and they do have a real vibe... just me?
i have a video about all the awful trends from the 2010s on the channel! (it was my first video essay though so it’s a mess 😅)
Mary Poppins lol that’s very true😂 it’s crazy how fashion evolves
I remember why that was - bras were shit and clothing cuts were equally as shit - it was like a curse and often not intentional - whatever you wore, stuff peaked out. It got normalized as it was unavoidable but I remember so many times I wished my stupid bra wasn't showing through my stupid tank top :(
SAME but I wear it with a otherwise modest dress
ghetto gold? I missed that when watching the show. SATC really was a product of its time.
This video is so thorough. You're incredible. I also love how you spoke about the impact people of color have had on fashion trends.
Yay!!
I'm in love with both the green tutu in the finale, and the black and white striped +flower Sonia Rykiel look.
OMG 14:50 LOLOLOL TSwfit's reputation cover album. What a great easter egg!
I appreciate the info you added about name plate necklaces. Hearing Carrie call it "ghetto" made me cringe. This scene highlighted the difference between Culture appropriation and Culture appreciation when I saw it.
Technically never did watch this but here I am anyways ,,,
You need to! it's lifechanging!
Michelle M it’s on HBO max and it’s on the channel E almost every night. ❤️❤️
heyayup yeah honestly I really should
If you’re a female, go watch it asap. It’s really good
if you’re anybody who likes shows like this watch it !
9:10 It's not Crocodile Birkin Bag, it's Ostrich leather Birkin Bag.
OMG I completely forgot about Lisa Frank. I used to have a Lisa Frank coloring poster where the dark spots were velvet and the rest of blank.
I remember watching this as kid because of the fashion. I've always been into fashion so seeing Carrie walk down the streets wearing lavish outfits was something that I loved. Eventhough now that I look back, what the hell was I doing watching this show at such a young age?
Will you do on on the ladies of the 90s show "Married with Children"? Peggy's spandex-belt-heels combo and Kelly's bodycon dresses were insane.
I really appreciate your honesty about the name necklace. It’s important people get recognition.
The fact she slept in a wired/moulded bra though will never not be weird.
idk if you watched 'girlfriends' but i wish someone would make a video about them
Yessss but most white women never hear of it and wouldn’t know anyone but jones’ actress
Yesss
Whew! The way I actually screamed when you first talked about nameplate one. Glad you elaborated and gave credit
It would be really cool if one day you could do a video breaking down each character's styles!! Awesome video as always!!!
Now I want to rewatch the show with my adult goggles on. I was too young to understand why I liked their clothes so much!
I love how they mention the history of fashion and not shying away from talking abt poc / black cultures influence on many trends!!
I love how you mentioned the QUEEN B from gossip Girl.
Also she had one store on 8th st
(between 5th Ave.
I mean, I live for 90s/early 2000s preppy fashion anyway and am always in a cardigan or sweater-vest, so maybe that's just me. xD
100% agree. Her style is beautiful, demure, classy.
Me too. SO Jackie O.
Charlotte’s looks are definitely the ones that look the best in today’s time
I will never be over her pregnancy style in the first SATC movie, especially the polka dot swing dress with the pink raincoat when she sees Big and goes into labor
Charlotte's outfits are goals tbh
This video and your acknowledgement of the nameplate origins makes me so happy. I obviously have no choice but to subscribe.
Nameplate necklaces go further back than the 1990s or 2000s. I wore one in the 1970s, proudly purchased at the local Cornet store for $1.19.
I found your channel during quarantine and it has been one of my favorites to follow! I love your content ❤️
Had no idea where the nameplate necklaces came from, thanks for including a bit of their history!
gilmore girls? friends? i would loooove to hear about that!
Now I know what I'm gonna do with my daughter one day when I have her and she grows up :') haha
And I agree, definitely needs more attention!
ME TOOO!! My mom is 53, I’m 17 now, and she started showing me this show when I was 10 to prepare me for life’s experiences.
I love your channel because you do such a good job of breaking down the cultural significance of shows like this and the historical side to it all. I love learning about the history of fashion and do that in such an entertaining way that it hardly feels like learning keeping me interested and never bored. 💙
I hope we get a "fashion evolution" video 🙂 showcasing each of the girls' styles and how they changed along with their character's stories. You would do it wonderfully!
You should do the most iconic looks from The Carrie Diaries, I loved the fashion of that show.
I really enjoy this. You research, reference reliable sources and give your own personal opinion and reasoning for those views. You are so thorough and speak so well it gives your videos life.
I would legitimately die to have Carrie’s tutu skirt, I wish tutu skirts were a trend for adult women because they are so damn cute!
Go for it!
L L A, I’ve tried and B. They’re not going to have one in my size but I appreciate the peptalk!

Tbh it’s weird w nameplates being popularized when it’s something I grew up w. I got mine as a gift and I was like oh my god. I was lowkey emo bc some ppl have no idea what they can mean. My mom has had hers since the early 90s my sister got hers around 2010 & I got mine in 2018
