I'm a dude I don't care about make up but I'm interested in old Hollywood and this was one of the most fascinating videos I've ever seen in my entire life. Seriously I'm a fitchy person and I sat for 20 minutes and did not budge. This was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. You didn't use clickbait, You didn't embellish or exaggerate. You just gave me fax and it was exemplary.
My grandmother's favorite lipstick was called "24karat orange " by Max Factor. Going through her estate, I found several originals unused because she stocked up when the company discontinued this color. Lipstick cases used to be works of art!! I am now collecting vintage makeup too.
As someone who tried to help her grandmother (born 1901) find her discontinued red lipstick, I know the pain. Everything that I brought to her was "too blue." I don't think we ever found the color she was searching for, but it was an adventure nonetheless. When I was a teenager in the 70s I read about 'prolonging your lipstick' by mashing the remainder of the lipstick from the tube with Petroleum Jelly. So, I took the rest of her original lipstick and mashed it with petroleum jelly and presented it to her as a lipstick. She was so happy even though I don't think she ever wore it. By then she had switched to a new shade with brown. Great video and thank you for the timeline!
With the invention of the microwave, you can lob off chunks of different colours and melt the shades down in the microwave and blend your own custom shades. You can mix in eyeshadows if you cant find a lip tone youre looking for and mix it in while its melted. Pour into a cleaned lipstick tube or an empty lip balm tube and bam, totally custom colours. Difficulty is recreating your favourite shade.
Wow--such a masterclass in makeup, makeup history, Marilyn and her artistry . . . . This is also a master class in how undertones and skin color affect the way lipstick looks.on our skin. I have similar coloring to Marilyn's and orange/pink lipsticks work much better than pure red--but they read as "red" on my skin. Fascinating!
@@scarlettschwarz1331 I have, but the kind of makeup detective work Erin does is unmatched. Also lately, besame has been coming out with Disney lines and nothing else. Really moving away from what made besame so special. It’s sad.
That part about the auction broke me out in a cold sweat, even though it was long after the event. A huge outlay for a single lip-stick but it might be worth 10 times that amount in another 60 years. My feeling is that Marilyn is going to be remembered for millenia, in the same way as Cleopatra and for similar reasons. For her charisma, beauty, extraordinary intelligence and her courage and creative genius.
I am a fan of "iconic makeup" and OF COURSE the Goddess that is and will always be Marilyn Monroe, but it's impossible to not also be a fan of YOU, lovely Erin! I've seen a few of your addictive vids and your passion and talent for this form of art is just incredible. I'm sure your astute dedication and detective work had Marilyn flattered and giggling in disbelief that someone would go to such lengths over her lipstick! You're awesome, lady! Xo
It was very clever from Marilyn’s team to go for an orange. It is impossible to make a red very vibrant without adding other colors and mixes to it, and orange seems like the perfect vibrant shade of red anyone could wish for
@@inge76 yes I know that. Orange isn’t very well anticipated as a mixture of red and yellow. I know many people that would get disappointed with the thought of orange as a vibrant substitute for red, but it shouldn’t be😅
Holy.. The idea that she walked around with an orange pout instead of red is quit the adjustment to the picture I have memorised of her in my mind! Simply fascinating!
She did wear different colours for different movies. Including a pink toned red. And Whitey her makeup artist often created shades by mixing several lipsticks together.
@@pobstrel i was under the strong impression that Marilyn often also wore multiple different lipsticks at the same time, like lip contouring and lip highlighting and such
My mums 95 and she always wore that orange lippy.. she would also use Henna for her red hair .. she loved Elizabeth Arden.❤️ your channels, outstanding thank you for what you’re doing. I love it…
That's interesting, orange lippy & auburn hair is usually suited to warm skin tones.. I have used Arden for years because she had dark hair & light cool toned skin so her colours tend to be "cool based" too.. Maybe your lovely Mum was a neutral? She sounds very glamourous!! x
@@emmsue1053 when you're cool toned and have red hair, it makes you actually able to pull off some warmer tones because the warm hair balances the light reflection and brings the skin tone a little to the neutral/warmer tone. However you need to know very accurately which tones suit this balance better. 😊
I just adored your video. The history was fascinating but I especially loved the respect and admiration you showed her by not using her lipstick. I was horrified by what Kim Kardashian did with her dresses. It was so disrespectful.i purchased copies. Of Marilyn's makeup by Besame and one of the lipsticks was a coral. Now I understand why. Thank you so much for all your information about makeup history and of course the forever lovely Norma Jean.
honestly I'm a dude, never worn make up but damn did I get invested in your video! It's like a MUA mystery drama detective work, kept me on the edge of my seat! Also super interesting to find out about the way technicolor affected movie make up, never thought of this!
I was going to say I know haha!!! It’s why people get weirded out when they see the original Wizard of Oz Red Ruby Slippers, they aren’t red at all but an orange brownish tone for the technicolor film. Colors register differently on film and lights used. So those juicy red Ruby slippers looked orange when they used a “red” color. Why films and photos need to always test that makeup and costumes used.
I'm so glad you won the auctions you did. A make-up historian who can be trusted to do the best by the cosmetics to preserve them and tell their story 💄 And thank you for not gatekeeping it but instead sharing this amazing background info with us. I don't know why BBC aren't hiring you to do documentaries because you are so knowledgeable and thorough. I hope we see more of these long form videos 😍😍
I’m not much of a make up person, but I do enjoy history. This was fascinating! The level of detective work you put into it was fun, it was like digging into forensic evidence. Congrats on owning the iconic lipstick. 💜
@@JungleFeversome’d say money and media attention. But if I were Ripleys, I would never let a ho like her wear Marylin’s dress… it’s not just a dress because aside from what it wads sold for to the museum, it’s historically even more valuable.
I knew this! I was so frustrated with makeup sellers for a while when they phased out entire orange color families in favor of more purpley pink reds. I'm really glad orange has been coming back. It's the only color that looks good with my skin tone.
@@AmyB369 I am similar. I'm super pale with warm peachy pink undertones. I ordered the revlon siren color after watching this video. Another great color for me has been volcanic. It's an excellent red-orange. I like to build it up a little bit like a stain, line my lips with a slightly darker red, and then layer the lip stick and a clear gloss a few times.
@@TamaraKane try Revlon Fire and Ice! It's very similar to the color in the video and the shade may have even been made originally by mixing 7-22 with that pink color they showed. It looks pink on cool tones, and orange on warm tones.
It was such an interesting story. I'm so happy you got the one you wanted! I remember Lisa Eldridge saying in video that MM used to layer different colors to get her iconic shade, so maybe she first used a red or hot pink and the layered the orange on top or something like that. Also the saturation of color is important and could change the color. My skintone has a strong yellow undertone and it's astonishing to me how lip colors show up differently on me that on the models in ads. Maybe with her features orange showed up more reddish.
In the late 1930’s, when my Grandmother (who resembled Lucille Ball) was a young widow, she was Ben Nye’s housekeeper for a few years. Later in the 1950s as a young girl, I would see his products on her dressing table. Apparently he gifted these to her and she kept them as keepsakes. Your story reminded me of her 💕
I remember as a kid seeing old photo collection of MM in orange lipstick. I was wondering why for a long time why she would wear such color knowing her signature color was red💋💄✨. Your video finally explained it 😍. Congrats for winning her vintage lipstick 💄❤
I’m not a makeup wearer, but this was one of the most fascinating videos I’ve watched in a while. Great investigative work!!! So cool to see how the small details fit together in this decades-old mystery
Yes, same here. I understand that Norma Jean/ Marilyn was remembered for the glamour and tragedy associated with her persona. Artifacts are tiny remnants of complex stories that people leave behind. The makeup could also be clues about culture at the time. If solving mysteries sparks interest, Mark Shaw has been working towards justice and investigating Marilyn, Dorothy Kilgallen, and JFK.
Yeah I'm actually related to Norma through the Mayflower Alden's on my father's side. No one cares about her actual genes being preserved though or who she could have been if we had a better world both then and now though. All people want is the doll.
This was SUCH a ride. I enjoyed every minute. To be able to sit through a 26 minute long video and not once feel ants in my pants due to my ADHD says a lot about your ability to make it exciting and interesting! Half way through I knew you were wearing the shade, I felt it in my heart. Thank you for this, I am getting the Revlon Siren asap, I can't wait to try this color myself.
I feel the exact opposite. This just popped up because I had auto-play turned on while I was knitting and because my hands were occupied I let it play but I can't believe someone rambled on for almost half an hour about something so boring / inane. But to each his own I guess
The colour is so fascinating. If someone had told me that her lips were "orange" I don't think I would have believed them. I would have said, no it's bright red! Such a great video. Thank you for all of the research that you do xx
I studied historic paint restoration and had to practice color matching extensively by eye. An art restorer could mix different lipsticks together to get that shade. I bet they would get extremely close if not right on!
That's a great idea! Or a paint store! Don't have they have lazers at home Depot where they can find the EXACT color of a wall? I'm pretty sure the tech does exist! She just has to think outside the box and check sectors that have nothing to do with makeup but everything to do with color like art restorers or painters!
You're both onto something. I just saw this video, was completely intrigued, and came to suggest exactly what you already mentioned. I hope her pursuit reveals the exact dupe. 🥰
the science of colour at the chemical level, emission and absorption spectra, specific numerical values for wavelengths corresponding exactly to specific colours of visible light… i live for this stuff 😍
I knew about her lipstick being pure orange. My best friends family were friends with the Factors, I can't remember if it went as far as her grandmother or not. I remember her mom telling us that they told her how Marilyn wore bright orange lipstick and something about it being red on film. I was in elementary school so I can't remember the details but the orange lipstick thing always stuck in my mind. I for the life of me wish I could remember the names of everyone mentioned and the details but unfortunately my brain is refusing to divi it up right now.
She wore different colours at different times of her life and career. And obviously different shades for different roles. Whitey Snyder her makeup artist said the red he often used for her public appearances was made up of several shades of pink and red and mixed with gloss.
Growing up my mom told me all the old Hollywood starlets in Marilyn’s time were wearing orange lipsticks and that hers was never really red. She only said it when I told her I wanted to wear red like Marilyn as a little girl. She rolled her eyes and said ITS ORANGE. so idk I thought it was common knowledge this entire time!
When I first opened this video I was like how is she going to use 27 minutes to explain this lipstick.... Well, I was wrong! That was a ride! I'm so glad that she owns this and respects it. 💄
Another thought came up about this: at 24:27 the very base of Marilyn's lipstick looks quite similar to the tester. I think the top part differs because it was used and oxidized over time. It would be interesting to do a test video on real technicolor using all these lipsticks. If you wanna know more about it, you could try and reach out to M. David Mullen. He was the cinematographer for Anna Biller's the Love Witch and he's an expert on period cinematography.
You have an amazing eye! It’s true the bottom does look a bit different that the top of the lipstick. And I’ve been dwelling on it, now you’ve confirmed it. I wonder if I could get a hold of him? I loved that movie, the love witch! Thankyou so much for this suggestion. Perhaps there will be a part two 😊
@@erinparsonsmakeup Unfortunately I don't think it's possible to shoot in real technicolor, since they discontinued it in the early 2000s and it was a proprietary method and only Technicolor labs could process film shot like that. 🙁 Some films nowadays, like said Love Witch, try to replicate it digitally or with the use of a specific set/costume design. Mullen for example used standard Kodak films, with specific lenses, lighting etc., so I don't know how exact colour replication would be with that. And I was wondering, if maybe you could get/rent a spectrophotometer for colour testing of your makeup? 🤔You wouldn't need some super high-tech one, there are small handheld ones for use in printing or in fashion, you could find a contactless one to not mess the makeup while testing. Maybe that would be an interesting way to colour match dupes? Also, is there a chance you could get someone to photograph, and put on Flickr or sth, some of your collection with a proper colour correction (maybe with ColorChecker Passport or sth like that)? I know you have tons of makeup, so I'm not saying the whole collection 😂 but maybe at least some of the most classic/famous/most used examples of various decades? It's so hard sometimes to pinpoint colour from etsy listings or from old yellowed ads. And yes, I know it's still not perfect, cause on one display photo can look different than on another, but with a well-prepared photo it's easier to get an idea. 😊
Yes, I noticed the color change as well. Especially visible on a larger screen. It may have oxidized. Or perhaps she layered a darker color over it or used lipliner under it, and the stain remains. I have 2 old lipsticks from Revlon that have similar orange tones Kiss me Coral and Marigold. Idk if they still make them but they seem to have a similar shade. If this lipstick were oil paint, it would be more of a chrome orange not cadmium. Perhaps that may help. Good luck and thanks, interesting to see the products she used.
Wow, what a brilliant video. Your respect for Marilyn is clear, and it’s fitting that you won the lipstick. The work you did to track it all down is mind blowing, and I am in awe at your research. Well done.
I'm neither a make up nor a Marilyn expert expert, but this film really made my day. You elegantly unraveled a story that not only made me know Marilyn more, but also opened my eyes to pigment and television history. And in such a passionate way that i really found myself rooting for you at that auction - i giggled when you won it. As you opened that L.S. 7-22 N.I. , you made me feel like i finally had the chance to witness a truth so rich and beautiful and confidential and misunderstood that my heart warmed, it really did. Thank you for sharing this beautiful story!
I just truly hope that anyone watching this realizes how incredible this moment was/is. I truly got so emotional watching this whole video, because I know Erin will cherish and value these items (along with the rest of her collection) for the rest of her life. So special! 21:30
The Marilyn Monroe Lipstick it is possible to find the numerical color code!!! There exists some devices that shine lights onto walls and they then find the color value. I believe it’s worth a shot to find the true color of the lipstick and make it so maybe you could have a true dupe made without potentially desecrating her lipstick. It wouldn’t harm the lipstick because it is just light but the one i think would work the best is called Pallette Pico or Color muse. Please please please try it for all of us out here that want to know the color code!
This! Heck, home depot and lowes have exact color detection. Imagine what a testing facility could have. I'm still in shock she hasn't mentioned contacting MAX FACTOR! Why would you not?!
Thank you so much Erin for your love and respect for Marilyn's items and preserving them for future generations. Unlike someone who shall remain nameless's selfish desire to wear that iconic dress, once so precious, now ruined.
Soo glad u didn't mention the name...BUT don't worry, they will never tell you it's a replica. To the exact measurements and exact material, stones etc. But it is. Carefully worded on the red carpet as "the exact same dress worn by The Angel Marilyn Monroe" which it is, but NOT THE dress. It's all in the wording, and then they deflect by talking about her having to be sewn into it etc..but the public only hears the pointers. What's NOT said is just as important as what is. Even the words 'oh so this is the exact very same dress M.M. wore to sing to the president' answer - yes, is not a lie. Bc it is exactly the same...but not the one. Yes, it would've been a total travesty.😓..but thankfully not.😅
She probably kept wearing it bc she knew it’d look amazing in photos and look red. When you do a makeup line, I will buy every single thing you sell. I’m so incredibly happy for you!
This is the most amazing journey I've ever been taken on by a UA-camr, I was so excited for you during the auction clip and somehow got so emotional at the end??? You deserve it sweetie 😭
This whole saga was absolutely fascinating to me. I love historical research, I love where it meets collection, and I absolutely love your love for Marilyn.
I watch every single video over and over. I love that you show your vintage collection and your organization techniques are inspiring to me. I live in a small space so it's almost impossible for me to own a collection of anything, but I enjoy watching people who can. Can you do a make up video of just red lipsticks and their application. Keep on postin' I will keep on watchin'
I’ve been into historical clothing for most of my life but I’ve never dabbled into historical makeup before, your channel has awoken something in my brain!! Lol
There is something lovely about wanting to have an item as intimate as a woman's makeup. Makeup is so personal to a woman and such a big part of everyday life, often times not even being thought of as an important part of life to some since makeup can sometimes just be a routine. But it takes time, thought, and care to paint your face in a way that you want to present to the world. I'm left wondering things like " What would she think of as she carefully made herself up?" Even if she is gone, her earthly possessions remain, dormant of use but given new life through careful admiration and imitation. I'm glad you are able to keep a piece of her from disappearing, if it weren't for people like you many of these items would probably have just stayed in storage, lost to time forever.
I’m amazed you didn’t mention she used five different colors at times to achieve her lip color. I can’t remember where I heard it. I’ve been fascinated with her since I was a teenager. I’ve studied her informally around twenty years. I studied cosmetology and esthiology at The Aveda Institute and grew up in a salon in my childhood. Great video.
This could have been an incredible Netflix docu series! I love Marilyn and I use makeup but I’m not knowledgeable about it at all. And tbh this info doesn’t benefit me in any way but man this video was extremely fascinating! I was shook the whole entire time especially when u figured out the lipstick she wore isn’t red! As a photographer, that makes sense. Film and post production was different back then. So glad YOU own her lipstick now!! Amazing work Erin! Such a thorough video with facts proof and footage of Marilyn and your auction moment! Congrats 🧡
This was such a long quest, from flirting with security, befriending an older makeup artist, and going on a bidding war with Bruce Wayne!?!!?! Crazy, can't wait till you give us an update. Also no matter how many times I look at it the lipstick is blood orange to me 😅
BEST. VIDEO. EVER. Thank you, Erin, for taking us on Marilyn's lipstick journey with you! So glad you won it at auction. You are so deserving of it; I am sure she would approve!
I have always wished that Ben Nye would have done a life biography. Not only did he do her makeup for just about every movie she did (makes you wonder if she started requesting or demanding him as her MFA), but did the makeup for hundreds of other stars on other films. What a life he must have led. The stories he must have learned and told. He probably got to know Marilyn just about as well as anyone could! He and Kevin Aucoin are my two heros. thank you for your video. Been away from makeup for a long time. This was a nice revisit to both makeup and Marilyn!
This video made me think a lot about different topics and gave a lot of nostalgia. To see how the products aged and how old they look but when they were new or on its prime moment I imagine the whole world different as well I don’t know its hard for me to explain but I’m sure many people think the same. On the other hand I also think is beautiful how even tho she was an icon she had her favorites and sticked to them, I feel like nowadays everything is about having a lot of everything more like quantity over quality/love/appreciation whereas back in the day people found something they loved, kept it and made it an statement for them and I think that is beautiful
Erin, it’s just amazing the amount of research you’ve done for Marilyn’s lipstick. My mother loved Marilyn. I wish my mother was alive to see this amazing video. Can you do research on a woman of color and how they survived trying to get makeup. Perhaps Lena Horne, Leslie Uggams or anybody you know that had to deal with getting makeup for their skin color. I truly love your UA-cam channel and your TikTok’s. My mother had a very difficult time trying to find foundation, powder or lipstick that looked decent for her skin color. I’m a baby boomer and it took many years for the makeup industry to include ALL hues of color. Keep up the great and enjoyable work you do. ❤🙏
Thank you for respecting Marilyn, I was so enraged that Kim Kartrashian desecrated her beautiful dress and im so glad Marilyn's belongings will never have to go through that♡💄
So neat! I love watching your vintage makeup tutorials. It’s fascinating the effects they had to figure out with color based on cameras and how they read color.
I am not a make-up history buff... but the way you shared the story of your journey of finding that lipstick got me hooked...you are such a passionate person I must say.
i'm a cosplayer, and several years ago i made an original bb-8 retro-future inspired costume from star wars. to match bb-8's color scheme, i went super orangey with my eyeshadow and even found a pure orange lipstick to go with the look thinking that it would add a touch of sci-fi weirdness. imagine my shock when i discovered that it actually looked pretty good on me. 😂 and that on camera it mostly just read as a very bright red-tone! i had to shop it to be more yellowy to make up for that. i'll have to try orange lipstick again after watching this video. what a cool journey!
This channel is so cool, I'm a man who doesn't wear makeup and knows nothing about makeup, but I'm absolutely obsessed with vintage style for men and women, I hope you keep making these long-form videos, there is some awesome info in here
I know! The price is very high. Another alternative might be Gucci Agatha Orange. I would swatch their different formulas and see. Maybe a little bit better in price than the Hermès 🤏 I personally love the whole Gucci line 🥰 but really, the Hermès knocks it out of the park as far as oranges go. Plus, it’s a beautiful formula. Good luck 🤞 Let me know what you think. Great video 👏👏🧡 Thank you 🙏
I have both the Gucci and the Hermes oranges and I’m also obsessed with orange lipstick and the Gucci Agatha wins hands down. It is a statement color, and all Gucci makeup is holy grail. The Hermes orange is very muted.
Revlon's 1970s shade Orange Flip was my late Mother's favorite. I'm not a fan of orange but that color was amazing on my Mom. The name alone is a total winner LOL.
They look exactly like the lipsticks my Grandma had. The gold applicator and that red-orange color I remember seeing it all the time. That must have been popular back then💄

@@tinaortiz4177 oh you are welcome dear 🤍 that's so impressive and glamorous a makeup artist in the 90s pretty sure you slayed ✨ My humble opinion is that makeup in the 90's aimed to show to enhance the real beauty of the women to make the colors and features already in her face shine bright give life to the face in an elegant way!! Nowadays it's camouflage 💔 Women should feel pretty and confident with makeup full of vital colors not changing skin color....eyebrows shape....inject lips 😔 you feel like someone else and you are lying to yourself, also makeup nowadays feels irreversible and it's scary once you touch your face it will never look the same again you have to keep the face you created.....even tho it's just makeup.

‼️If you're going to watch only one Monroe film, watch her serious thriller. She was FANTASTIC in it! It's called Don't Bother to Knock! She wanted to be in serious roles and she studied acting extensively and was incredibly talented! But the studios ONLY wanted her to play the dumb blonde in romantic comedies. It was heartbreaking she tried so hard and took classes for DECADES because she thought it was her acting skill that kept her from being cast in serious roles. When it had nothing to do with her not having talent. It had to do with the men in charge seeing her as her beauty and nothing else. Her beauty kept the studios from taking her seriously. Very tragic. GREAT movie tho! I ALWAYS recommend that one. It's much better than any of the other movies IMO. I think she did only one other serious film and it was the last movie she did before she passed. Her husband wrote a script just for her. It was semi autobiographical I believe. But I don't think it's as good as Don't Bother to Knock. Pretty sure you can watch it for free on UA-cam
I bought 2 tubes of siren. TY for letting us know the closest shade. I loved the video, and wearing this colour will be like touching the past and keeping some of Marilyn alive every day

Erin , much respect ✊. This was great storytelling. I was screaming 😱 at the screen the entire time you had a coral orange and orange lipstick 💄 the entire time. A long time ago on UA-cam I learned that the best color red lipstick 💄 in pictures was a regular orange 🍊 color. I went on a whole binge on playing with reds, pinks, coral, orange, and pink themed makeup and lipsticks. I literally created the perfect 🤩 orange them make up for my skin tone. I found five universal colors that gets me compliments every time with a little help of color theory, UA-cam videos, and make up books for myself
Wow, to think Marilyn's iconic red lip was created by an orange lipstick! It also amazes me that the only modern department store brand she wore was Elizabeth Arden. So much history of makeup! And I'm obsessed with your auction house look!
Just recently I saw a UA-camr that buys, fixes and resells furniture, use a device (a tiny little gadget) that identifies color; maybe you could try that. What a treasure to own that lipstick 🧡

Maybe she didn't use it because she thinks it's too beautiful, there's only one out there made by you no less. i wouldn't use it too! 😂
Awesome story! Thanks for telling it

That is such a wholesome story 💕 thank you for sharing 😊
Wow--such a masterclass in makeup, makeup history, Marilyn and her artistry . . . . This is also a master class in how undertones and skin color affect the way lipstick looks.on our skin. I have similar coloring to Marilyn's and orange/pink lipsticks work much better than pure red--but they read as "red" on my skin. Fascinating!

Hi 👋
So awesome you finally found it!! Loved this video and learning the history of the iconic Marilyn! 💋
It is impossible to make a red very vibrant without adding other colors and mixes to it, and orange seems like the perfect vibrant shade of red anyone could wish for
That likely Max Factor's call. She really didn't have a personal "team" a la Les Kardashians.
well i mean...? orange quite literally is a red with other color mixed into it? its red and yellow?
@@inge76 yes I know that. Orange isn’t very well anticipated as a mixture of red and yellow. I know many people that would get disappointed with the thought of orange as a vibrant substitute for red, but it shouldn’t be😅
It wasn’t her team really-it was the MUA’s trying to get the color to show up on film properly. She literally said that in the video
@@daughterofyah6209 oh alright
Holy.. The idea that she walked around with an orange pout instead of red is quit the adjustment to the picture I have memorised of her in my mind! Simply fascinating!
This is mindblowing.
She did wear different colours for different movies. Including a pink toned red. And Whitey her makeup artist often created shades by mixing several lipsticks together.
She had different looks into the 60s, my personal favorite for her!
This is going into the sixties when she died and peach oranges colours were definitely the popular colours of that time
@@pobstrel i was under the strong impression that Marilyn often also wore multiple different lipsticks at the same time, like lip contouring and lip highlighting and such
My mums 95 and she always wore that orange lippy.. she would also use Henna for her red hair .. she loved Elizabeth Arden.❤️ your channels, outstanding thank you for what you’re doing. I love it…
That's interesting, orange lippy & auburn hair is usually suited to warm skin tones..
You are the only person I’d ever want to own Marilyn’s stuff. ❤️ you truly honor her
I just adored your video. Same dude, fascinating. I also couldn't stop staring at Erin's makeup, really beautiful, love that "old hollywood" style.
Same here. Really fascinating!

@@oldasyouromens thank you! ❤️
I cannot explain how happy I am to see that you of all people won the auction. I could never imagine a better person to own Marilyn's makeup.

Later in the 1950s as a young girl, I would see his products on her dressing table. Apparently he gifted these to her and she kept them as keepsakes. Your story reminded me of her 💕
That’s really cool. Getting makeup from Ben Nye is like getting clothing from Edith Head!
How iconic!
I was thinking of my Ben Nye products the entire time!!! Some amazing things. My first real makeup kit was full of Ben Nye. I still have them!!

Yes my friend got the actual toilet paper roll that she used for 80,000
Yeah I'm actually related to Norma through the Mayflower Alden's on my father's side. No one cares about her actual genes being preserved though or who she could have been if we had a better world both then and now though. All people want is the doll.
This was SUCH a ride. I enjoyed every minute.

This is interesting. Dorothy Dandrige was also famous for her coral lipsticks.

The Love Witch is such a great movie. ♡
Mac Vegas could be a good match
Yes, I noticed the color change as well. Especially visible on a larger screen. It may have oxidized. Or perhaps she layered a darker color over it or used lipliner under it, and the stain remains. I have 2 old lipsticks from Revlon that have similar orange tones Kiss me Coral and Marigold. Idk if they still make them but they seem to have a similar shade. If this lipstick were oil paint, it would be more of a chrome orange not cadmium. Perhaps that may help. Good luck and thanks, interesting to see the products she used.

@@lovedivealma Thank you for reading my post. Yes, I think that a lot of really modern makeup looks came out of the 90's.
@@tinaortiz4177 oh you are welcome dear 🤍 that's so impressive and glamorous a makeup artist in the 90s pretty sure you slayed ✨
My humble opinion is that makeup in the 90's aimed to show to enhance the real beauty of the women to make the colors and features already in her face shine bright give life to the face in an elegant way!!
I also think Marilyn was wearing the orange lipstick in the seven year itch! It looked very orange
WOW, ICONIC!!! AMAZING VIDEO 🧡🧡🧡
This story is insane! It’s fabulous! It’s everything I love about make up, history, and collecting. Congratulations on your purchase! I’m thrilled you managed to get her 7-22 N.I at auction!
Have you ever approached Max Factor direct to see if they have the colour code on file and are able to reproduce it? Wouldn’t that be fabulous! There must be archaic files at Max Factor surely! Xxx
I have been a Marilyn fan for a very long time, plus I love make-up, so this is amazing! So happy you won the auction Erin - must have been an incredible feeling!
Rewatching this after seeing it pop up on Facebook. I don’t know why but there’s something so lovely and comforting about your content. It’s a nice distraction when things feel extra crummy and difficult.
I don't know why, but you getting her lipstick kind of made me tear up😭 what an interesting story super well told and i absolutely loved hearing about all the details and your research of her makeup❤
I have never worn make up in my entire life and this video was so educational and entertaining. I'm so glad you have a little piece of Marilyn.
I love max factor. I wish they still sell it!
I hope you are able to stay in contact with Ben Lane. Knowledge from "Old Hollywood" is invaluable and being lost everyday. How wonderful to hear these accounts first hand. I love stories like this! Maybe he would be willing to do some type of live interview for your UA-cam channel?
Edit: Thank you for honoring and respecting MM's memory, and the fact that she was a person first, and then an icon.
I love how transparent and open you are with all your discoveries ❤ we need more of that in the world ❤
You are an incredible storyteller! I was hooked from beginning to end of this fabulous tale! Thank you for taking us along for the journey and for sharing all of your research along the way! And thank you for helping us get to know Marilyn a little bit more. ❤
This was not a video, it was a documentary/investigation and I loved it!❤
You are the most INCREDIBLE storyteller
Watching you bid made me immediately well up with uncontrollable tears 😭 not just the sympathetic anxiety lol, but this type of preservation and conservation is literally one of the most important things in the world. So grateful for you Erin 😭🥰
Also it reminds me exactly of YSL Le Orange!
The passion and fierce journalistic integrity is unmatched. Brava. Waiting for museum to open. ❤❤❤
As a makeup addicted 😂 I'm baffled by your work, you're a reference already! My wish is that a good brand reaches out to you to collab, you would create some really great things ❤
I’m impressed with how much research she’s done just on this topic. I’ve never seen any Marilyn Monroe movies nor ever been interested in knowing anything about her life. But now this has piqued my interest just a bit. 😅 Thanks for sharing! Hugs from LA, -Aurora ❤❤❤
I loved the video, and wearing this colour will be like touching the past and keeping some of Marilyn alive every day
All these years later so many of us are spellbound by Marilyn’s spirit. I can’t imagine how hypnotised the people who met her in person felt ❤
You are an AMAZING story teller! I can feel your passion, knowledge, and you literally kept me watching something I would normally pass by...You need to come up with something weekly!
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. It’s an honor. I wish Lisa Eldridge was more open about her AH lipstick she bought.
I really enjoyed watching this. I’ve never seen this gal before and loved this video
Holy shit. Never in my days did I think I’d be sucked into such a riveting makeup mystery. No regrets. Great content. Subscribed
it's hard not to skip every second of this video. you are a great story teller!
Love this video about you finding Marilyn's lipstick. It was so informative & I learned a lot. Thank you so much for sharing your collection with us.
