It is a great start but there are definitely a few more missing features. Some examples: a shadeless option is essential for hand-painting. Alpha maps and viewing because so many different asset types can use transparency. Painting across the whole model, ignoring parts. Options to use and export only selected maps and layers, like maybe you don't need metalness. I know we can't ask too much of it but I do hope some of these could be added.
Best video out there about the new features! I was looking everywhere for the texture resolution information and you have the most! 4k trick was exactly what I was hoping (well, 8k but hey those m1's babyyyyyy) !
Awesome review, Dimitris! Thats quite baffling they don't have Symmetry included considering they have it for the 2D drawing toolset! Appreciate your breakdown! Gotta give this a go!
Thanks EJ. You should definitely give it a try! You'll have a blast! I'm hoping the symmetry tool will come sooner rather than later! Keeping my fingers crossed!
It's a much more difficult thing to implement in 3D since you need to account for slight asymmetry on models, such as for realistic faces. They did say that the scope increased a lot and that they had to draw the line somewhere, would expect them to add things like this at a later point though.
I don’t think it’s possible to imploment symmetry on a 3D model because of the way that Uv mapping works. The only way to get symmetry is to Uv map your 3D model in a way that would allow symmetry. Aka. Overlapping faces in the Uv Map and flipping them
I think it might be great to use for personal projects where you can take your time and don't need to use ID/vertex color maps, smart materials that need to match other assets etc. I commend them for going through the effort of making such a solid texturing tool for iPad though.
Thanks for the video! i think the symmetry option is by far the most missing feature on this version….hope they add that in the next update. But sure this is quite a new world for 3D artists using ipad! Im so excited!

Procreate developers needs to add a simple script to solo a single object. With a long hold in a layer... hide others and long press again same layer show them back on! You are welcome Procreate! Now send me an ipad with the app.
Was really very curious if this would work like mental canvas which is another 3D style painting app.. do you know if this new procreate can be used like that app?
I got a question 🙋♂️. If I get a 3D head model and paint on it, can I then use the 3D Model Head in face reference. Can I use the 3D face to record a video as the 3D head for ,y head. Does that question make sense. Hope so. Thank you.

@@marvelousdecay Thanks for the quick reply. I am using blender, when I create a new texture for the unwrapped UV's it doesn't transfer with the .obj file, it create a .mtl file... Not sure this can be used? I don't believe I can export to USDZ
@@adamkoubek7576 I did! if you export your .obj from blender it will also export a .mtl file. Keep that .obj an d.mtl file in a folder togethe with nothing else. Using multi tasking while in procreate, open files and drag the FOLDER to procreate. This will import your model with textures/uv's. I found it didn't work if I was in a stack, so watch out for that. Let me know how it goes!
Exactly. You can download demos…. What’s the point of that? That’s like giving an artist a colouring book. Yeah!!! 3D art!!! Can I make my own 3D art? No. I’m a big procreate fan as you can see from my UA-cam channel but this 3D update is of no use to me. Sorry. 😢
My guess is that Procreate is trying to reach a new audience. 3D artists. So from that perspective the new feature makes a lot of sense. But I see your perspective. The good thing is that 3D is getting easier and easier with each passing year. So maybe download a couple trials of 3d applications and give them a try. You might find them easier to get into!
Good video Dimitris. I have a couple of issues with the app. When importing an OBJ from the Forger app, it won't allow me to paint over the object in Procreate (I apply the brush stroke but then the paint stroke disappears within an instant) and then when exporting the models back out to use them in other programmes, the file exports but not as an OBJ; it has no file extension so is 'unrecognisable'. With your experience of the app, can you advise. I raised a ticket with Procreate direct but am still waiting for a reply many days later. I model in 3D so this is a pain; it'd be really useful for my business. Many thanks.
Hey Richard. My guess is that your object doesn't have any UVs, that's why your paint strokes disappear in Procreate. As for the export format from Procreate you can choose between OBJ or USDZ. So pick the one that suits your needs the most. I would encourage you to watch my other video where I go through the whole 3d workflow for Procreate. You can watch it here ua-cam.com/video/ElWYqSjw5SI/v-deo.html Hope that helps
@@marvelousdecay Thanks. I managed to sort out the UVs in forger; it was a settings export issue. I watched the great video and yes, I can see USDZ are the best way to export out, but I use SketchUp and Lumion which I need to use. The issue I have is that it won't even export out in OBJ format - it does with USDZ. I'm perplexed that the app won't allow you to export OBJs even though it's given as an option. Why offer that functionality if it won't work? Thanks for your help anyway.
When I paint on my models in procreate my brush is off centre from where I’m painting on the screen, like I’m pressing on my model centre area and the brush stroke is in down in the bottom right side. I have no clue why it’s doing this any tips?
I have an ipad 9th gen, will naomi, nomad sculpt, procreate 3d (2k texturing) work on it ? I am a 3d artist by proffesion and want to incorporate my ipad in my workflow
I’m not aware of the exact specs of that iPad but you can easily check yourself if you go to the App Store with that device. Apple has a dedicated section where it tells you if the app can run on that system.
Great video Dimitris!😊 Do you have any tips on how to export my 3D texture project with layers from procreate to mari to do the final touches? As far as I know procreate doesn't allow to export .psd for 3D files 😔
@@marvelousdecay thank you for your reply 😊 I really hope they implement this feature, it would be sooo cool to move files around between procreate and Mari!
Hey @@marvelousdecay sorry if I keep bothering you, you're so knowledgeable on this topic! I kinda figured out how to move layers from Procreate to Mari, but still they don't seem to work very well. The texture look like they are keeping track of the procreate lightings and I can't figure out how to turn them off, and the layers once I export them have a white background instead of a transparent one. Do you think there is a way of making this workflow (diffuse in Procreate then moving to Mari for other maps and final details) possible?
How do you actually make a 3D model from scratch? I know procreate already has some 3D models you can practice on but is there any way to make your own Model?
I wish someone would provide a tutorial for using Blender to import Procreate-painted models. My imac has 24gb of Ram but Blender crashes when importing the model.
Personally I think they should make a separate app for it! I feel like a bunch of extra 3d features will clog up the app when most people won’t be using it for that purpose. (Also it’s a great excuse to support them further with more monetary support :P). They could carry the brush engine over then go all in on the 3d features that way.
That's always the case with new features. I think people thought the same when they added the new animation tools. On one hand I see your point but on the other hand I wouldn't want them to end up like Adobe in the late aughts where they had 10s of applications on the iPad each doing one simple thing. I would say as long as the interface is not cluttered I think it's absolutely fine to have everything in one app. And with the case of the 3D functionality nothing is really in the way. You have to load a 3d model to be able to see all the new UI elements.
@@marvelousdecay the way it is now it’s fine, but for full functionality like the original commenter said I still think it would be better to separate them out because they’re totally different mediums. Animation is still a 2D medium so it makes sense to bundle them together, but 3D/3d animation is a whole other thing, plus it would take up a lot of extra storage space just in the base app when procreate is already a rather large app. its really not the same as adobe either imo, because the procreate devs aren’t predatory like Adobe is and sell their product for a cheap price/don’t use a subscription model. Most people won’t be using every single app either.
@@marvelousdecay but everything is NOT in one app. You have to go searching for models and possibly pay for them and get "UVs" from who knows where and it's already so complex that my head is spinning. I mean, this is great for non-traditional modelers who are good at memorizing technical aspects of apps and painting on existing art, but artists are going to have a hard time. Maybe if they made something like Easy Poser and let us paint on models we could intuitively make ourselves it would feel less like geometry homework and more like art. 😉 😂
Hey there. Greetimgs from Turkey. I am planning to buy an IPad Pro 12.9 512 GB. But unfortunately the prices in my country is really really too high for us. May be I should can choose an 256 gb model too. I can't decide. Is there any storage limitation for 3d works on IPad? Which storage capacity would be enough and helpful for the near future? Thanks for the video. Have a great day.
256GB is going to be enough space. I usually suggest to go as high as you can not because you won't be able to work with 256GB but for the longevity of the device. Your needs will increase so better to future proof yourself as much as possible. But 256GB is absolutely fine.
Hey Dimitris, thanks for the video, it's very concise and explanatory. However I cannot figure out how to do the 4k import steps. I tried to do the UV's in C4D and set differents 4k materials for the differents parts of my object. I exported the object in obj with a mtl but when I import the obj to Procreate, it only shows 2k textures (the different parts of the object are there anyways so that part works well). Example models shows 4k textures so probably I'm missing something or maybe I have to export the model in USDZ format? Thanks for the help.
My understanding is that you have one 4K texture for all parts of your model. So a 4k colour map a 4k metallic and a 4k roughness map. I don't believe you have the ability for multiple UVs per object. So try to fit all parts of your object in to one UV space and give it another try. I think that will work fine.
I was super excited for the 3D modeling as I’ve never done 3D work and I wanted to create my characters. But problem is I have no way to import a UV, which meant I could not do any 3D work. I’m hoping this becomes available for everyone with UVS.
Do you have to use an apple pen to paint on the 3D models? I’ve been trying to paint the guitar and it just keeps moving the model around even though I have the paint brush selected :/
Am I the only one who can’t 3d paint? Every time I go to do a brush stroke on one of the 3d objects the object moves and the paint stroke doesn’t show up. And yes I did select which section/layer I wanted to paint so idk what I’m doing wrong. I don’t have an Apple Pencil if that matters.
If you're going to use your finger you need to enable that option in Procreate. Under the wrench icon go to Gesture controls and then General. Then tap on "Enable 3D painting with finger"

Procreate developers needs to add a simple script to solo a single object. With a long hold in a layer... hide others and long press again same layer show them back on! You are welcome Procreate! Now send me an ipad with the app.
Does the 3d painting only work on the new M1 ipad or does it work with the 2018 ipad pro too?
Does it works on ipad air 4 gen.
Was really very curious if this would work like mental canvas which is another 3D style painting app.. do you know if this new procreate can be used like that app?
Sorry I'm not familiar with that app.
I got a question 🙋♂️. If I get a 3D head model and paint on it, can I then use the 3D Model Head in face reference. Can I use the 3D face to record a video as the 3D head for ,y head. Does that question make sense. Hope so. Thank you.
Not sure I follow. What is it that you would like to do?
@@marvelousdecay yeah sorry okay so I want to use a 3D face model to do what she is doing in this video

Utilizing the Li-Dar scanner will make this sick as f
Impressive, Can't put it down, haven't stop drawing, Not like any other complex app/software. These are just some of the key things you said in this video I TOTALLY Agree with. I'm a freehand artist that's worked with Windows platform forever. After my wife asked me to try iPad.... I said WTH??!! Super Impressed!! Thank you for your review & post. Kudos!👍🏾 We All know who that clown is 🤡
Great video Dimitris!!
Quick question though, when you say load a 4k image along with the .obj.... How do we do that?
Hey Matt. I mean when you save your model save it with a 4K image. USDZ is better for that. I’m preparing a video about the whole process and the 3D workflow on the iPad. It’s a little bit easier to explain in video form. Probably by the end of next week it’ll be up
@@marvelousdecay Thanks for the quick reply.
I am using blender, when I create a new texture for the unwrapped UV's it doesn't transfer with the .obj file, it create a .mtl file... Not sure this can be used? I don't believe I can export to USDZ
@@mattdub9524 same question. did you figure this out?
@@adamkoubek7576 I did! if you export your .obj from blender it will also export a .mtl file. Keep that .obj an d.mtl file in a folder togethe with nothing else. Using multi tasking while in procreate, open files and drag the FOLDER to procreate. This will import your model with textures/uv's.
I found it didn't work if I was in a stack, so watch out for that.
Let me know how it goes!
@@mattdub9524 AH! I didn't know Procreate can take folder so I'd never figure this out! I'll give it a shot on my next project. Appreciate the update!
Thank you for sharing!
Where do you get your 3D models from?

What’s new
@Usman Farooq you can download some demo ones from what'snew page
You can watch it here ua-cam.com/video/ElWYqSjw5SI/v-deo.html
Hope that helps
@@marvelousdecay thanks for the advice man
Do you have to use an Apple Pencil to color it?
Bro how can I save time laps 3d procreat just give me just 2sec Timelapse 😢😞
Oof! This is lovely!
Great video Dimitris!😊 Do you have any tips on how to export my 3D texture project with layers from procreate to mari to do the final touches? As far as I know procreate doesn't allow to export .psd for 3D files 😔
Hey Sophie. Yeah unfortunately I don't think it's possible to export 3d layers as psd files. Maybe something to be addressed in future updates.
Do you have to use a apple pen to paint in procreate 3D?
How did you get other 3D shapes?
Please watch this video here
ua-cam.com/video/ElWYqSjw5SI/v-deo.html
where I go through the whole 3d workflow
those texture have maps like roughness, specular, something like that ?
PBR , so Roughness and Metallic
How do you actually make a 3D model from scratch? I know procreate already has some 3D models you can practice on but is there any way to make your own Model?
You need a 3D modeling program. Blender is a free program, Cinema 4D, Maya, 3D studio max are payed desktop apps.
Ohhh. Ok got it. Thanks!
I wish someone would provide a tutorial for using Blender to import Procreate-painted models. My imac has 24gb of Ram but Blender crashes when importing the model.
How do you import 4k 3d models? I am stuck in 3d with 2046x2046 canvas resolution, but I see that you have some of yours in 4026x4026.
We can draw on 3d objects. Can we create new 3d object too?
I hope in the future Procreate will have full functionality like Substance Painter
That would be awesome for sure!
@@marvelousdecay Thank you so much. good evening :)
It won’t allow me to paint on 3d models. The only way I can paint is if I use the 2d texture but it’s too complicated..
The fact it doesn’t have Bump and normal map is a dealbreaker for me
Hey Dimitris, thanks for the video, it's very concise and explanatory.
Will the 3d update work with ipad air 4??
How did u get the face of that dude u were drawing joker on
What’s the website name or did u make it
How can you add the 3d modeling examples when you already deleted them
Does iPad 2018 support it?
Your music background with breaking glass is very distracting.
I was super excited for the 3D modeling as I’ve never done 3D work and I wanted to create my characters. But problem is I have no way to import a UV, which meant I could not do any 3D work. I’m hoping this becomes available for everyone with UVS.
Does the 3D pack cost anything?
I don’t have a stylus/Apple Pencil can I still paint on 3$.
does anyone know why procreate isn’t letting me painting on my models? i don’t know why but i just can’t seem to get it
Hey i use a simple connected pencil but not an apple one and it don’t paint it juste move the model so do i only can use an Apple Pencil ?
Maybe try the "connect legacy stylus" option in the prefs of procreate. It's under the wrench icon.
How can i draw 3d there is not 3d select
Can we convert regular images into 3D ?????
The technique you're describing is called photogrammetry. Have a look at another one of my videos here: ua-cam.com/video/vh2LOEG9Zf8/v-deo.html
i cannot load a 3d model with 4k texture how you do it
Procreate to Mataverse
Do you have to use an apple pen to paint on the 3D models? I’ve been trying to paint the guitar and it just keeps moving the model around even though I have the paint brush selected :/
I have the same problem :(
I just figured it out, you do NOT need the apple pencil!! Go to settings>gesture controls>general>enable 3D painting with finger. Good luck!!!
my ipad doesn't run the 3D function :(
This doesn’t work without an Apple Pencil, right? 🥲
YESSSSSSS YES YESS
Am I the only one who can’t 3d paint? Every time I go to do a brush stroke on one of the 3d objects the object moves and the paint stroke doesn’t show up. And yes I did select which section/layer I wanted to paint so idk what I’m doing wrong. I don’t have an Apple Pencil if that matters.
If you're going to use your finger you need to enable that option in Procreate. Under the wrench icon go to Gesture controls and then General. Then tap on "Enable 3D painting with finger"
@@marvelousdecay omg thank you so much you’re such a big help!!
How can I import my zbrush models into procreate?
You can use OBJ to import your model. Just make sure to reduce the poly count before exporting.
How do u add new 3D objects
How do I import my model? I’m stuck
Does this have a symmetry/ mirror mode?
Currently symmetry is not supported in 3D
What size iPad are you using ?
It's the 12.9" iPad Pro
Nomad sculpt now let's you UV unwrap 🤗
