So this is the first of a few videos and I’m sorry it won’t give you all the answer you are looking for to go from Nomad to Procreate. Yet! Eric has done an awesome job showing us a route via blender and I have a ZBrush one in the works. Let’s get a conversation about how you will get your models UV’d, normal maps applied and out as a GLTF to use in Procreate. There are tons of options and routes so let’s explore them!
One thing I didn’t add and don’t understand is if you have the resource and capability to add something like AR why would you not have added something relatively simple like painting symmetrically? Feels like an oversight imho.
My current work-around is UV-Unwraping half of my model so that once I apply the mirror modifier (in Blender) the UVs will overlap themselves. Allowing me to draw on one side within Porcreate and having it show up on both sides. Also providing more UV space to work with. Still cumbersome for those needing to go in and out of mirror mode while painting but useful in some scenarios.
Great stuff here as always Glen! It's unfortunate we can't get usable UV's out of Nomad sculpt for direct import into Procreate for painting. Still amazing that we can do this level of 3D painting in Procreate on an iPad!
The web version of a nomad has UV capability now so I would imagine it’s only days away until we get it into Nomad. But…..UV’s are only one part of it. High poly models are incredibly hard to UV. Auto UV solutions work best but it depends where your model is going. We need Nomad to have an auto retop, a way to project high to low, a way to UV, a way to capture that high detail onto a Normal map and then of course baking. What I’m describing is ZBrush or maybe, more accurately, Blender. It’s insane that we are even having this conversation about an IPad right! Look how far we’ve come!
@@SouthernGFX It surely is amazing! I'm not sure an iPad would be the place I'd choose to do manual retopo anyhow. If we could get an auto retopo tool that would work well enough to bone rig for posing (please!!) that would be enough for me. "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free"..Michelangelo. Then he handed him off to an intern for retopo. ;)
Awesome video as always! Thanks so much for the shoutout!! I've been following your content since the early Gravity Sketch days- and your work in Nomad is what convinced me to step away from Medium long enough to give it a go. Looking forward to seeing your Nomad to Procreate process videos!
Cheers Eric and the shout it is well deserved. I learn so much from your videos. I’m still loving VR and just about to finish my MA in VR creation tools so my career is still going to be heading deeper into the VR world. I’m working with Shapelabs a lot now and hopefully Kodon soon which brings that desktop/VR workflow together nicely. All exciting stuff.
@@SouthernGFX interesting. I really like the voxel approach that allows you to spray geo into air, but I'm game for any new sculpting tool in VR as options feel so limited. I really wish we could get a decent sculpting app for the Quest that isn't PC-based.
Hello, I am wondering if you have any idea about an issue I am having. I imported an obj file into procreate from blender and it displays perfectly, but I cannot get any color to appear. I tap and it appears blue, but then I cannot paint on it. The example models work fine so I assume it is a problem with what I imported. I’ve scanned the support forums and had no luck finding others with the same issue. I can provide more information as needed but I just started using blender today so I’m not certain what is relevant.
It’s odd because if it’s loaded ok it must have UVs. It’s simply doesn’t load of not. Make sure you are painting on the colour layer not the roughness or metal layer.
Been holding out for your video on Procreate, Glen…At last! 🙏….(and looking forward to your exploration of Armor Paint for iPad.) ✊☕️🎩🎩🎩 Brilliantly whimsical Robot!
Mine is nothing more than a starter for 10 so far. People like Eric3Dee and Steve Talkowski are leading the charge on this one for me. I’m having stability issues with Armor paint just now but I’ll sort that soon.
@@SouthernGFX Thank you, sir. I follow EVERYONE who makes even a small contribution to the knowledge pool, but I know that when you pick it up it’s going to be comprehensive & deep. Your plans for Nomad/Blender/Procreate workflow are spot on by us artsy noobies. ✌️☕️🎩
Didn't know the procreate I already have can do that,if only there was a emissive map option... I was pulling my hair out with armor paint in ios today...

Been wanting to expand my 3D modelling and sculpting and your videos really helped me with nomad sculpt! Now I want procreate as well hahaha thanks and keep up the great content
The fact you can't UV unwrap on an iPad (not reliably at least, Forgers auto UV isn't that great), makes this a small fail in my opinion. Most people already invested in the PC 3D modeling and texturing industry are already going to have the means and know how to keep doing so on a PC. I feel the Procreate 5.2 3D paint should have been vertex painting still, because with Procreates brushes and the ease of their UI, this would have been a huge win by being able to keeping the entire workflow on the iPad itself.
I agree with most of your points. I think having both vertex and texture capability would be great. Simply because you could start painting on any model irrespective of whether it has UV’s and then project across if needed. Nomad will have UVs soon but I doubt they will be at the level of Blender of ZBrush. I think of Procreate 5.2 as a greet starting point with lots of missing basics (like symmetry)
And in just over a week from the Procreate release right! Stephanie has to be one of my all time favourite developers! My Nomad to Procreate video is due out at 5pm today and I have to say it's amazing! The new tool, not my video lol!
Can I still paint normally within the same document as a 3d model? Fore example, the illustration you showd at 1:09. I know it is entirely 2d, but hypothetically could something like that background be painted as regular layers in procreate and then the characters are 3d?
@@SouthernGFX ahhh I see. So there’s no functionality to incorporate your 3D models into paintings? Or perhaps use them as reference to paint on top of, ala Clip Studio Paint? That is what I thought would be the whole point of this feature, but I guess I misunderstood the direction they were taking for adding 3D to procreate….
Speechless!!! Your videos are rock solid foundation to anybody trying to become a 3D artist. Congratulations for such an amazing work putting all this content available to us.
Is there anyway of taking a project from nomad and putting it into another program to get the uv mapping done so I could bring old nomad projects in. Or is forger my best option for importing to procreate?
@@alvarosotelo5820 … Which developer are you referring to? Nomad or Procreate, or someone else? But UV on iPad would be awesome. If Forger upped their game right now they would definitely make some $$$. ✌️🍷🎩🎩🎩

The AR feature looks really cool. More fun to look forward to! Thanks again and please keep teaching us. Your work is much appreciated.
3D is fun to have, but that's about it. And since 3D models cannot be created nor transformed in Procreate (cannot sculpt), this additional feature is of limited interest, in my opinion. Plsu note that many 3D models that are standards in the industry cannot be edited in Procreate (or some information is lost, eg you need a UV map). I noticed that when trying to import 3D models from specialized database sites on the Internet. Allow Procreate to sculpt and this will be a real game changer. Maybe for the next version?
Just get Nomad or Forger if you want to sculpt, texturing of 3D objects is much simpler to implement into a painting application than adding a complete sculpting feature set
@@bodawei425 … Procreate’s new 3d paint feature is of MASSIVE importance. Procreate is all about paint, and it’s very good at it. Nomad/Forger are all about sculpting, and they’re very good at it. An all in one package that does it all is not happening this week. But the iPad really is already that environment in which all these functions can cooperate. We’re just missing a few pieces.
