    I'll never forget the show I went to on this tour. Madison, WI, four days before 9/11. They had these actors come out all painted up and did the dance. They climbed ropes on each side of the stage to the top, and suspended themselves, moving all weird to the music. I've seen Tool six times since 98' and that show was still the best I ever witnessed.

      They played Grand Rapids, Michigan and Columbus, Oh the nights before Cleveland. I know because I was there. They were HEAVY shows!
      We weren't sure the show was going to go on but they didn't cancel so we went. Security was REALLY tough with extensive pat downs. I had a small Swiss Army pocket knife on my car key ring and they would not let me in with it. It was a tiny knife and I was begging the guy to keep it and he wouldn't budge. It was the 1st big boy gift my dad had given me and he passed away a few years before the show. It had HUGE sentimental value to me but the guy refused to let it slide. Then some other nosy security guard with an attitude yelled to " Get him out of there!!!!" meaning me so and they started to close in on me.
      At that point I wasn't going to miss the show so I gave up the knife and bolted in thru the doors and they chased me thru the crowd. I took my shirt off and took my pony tail holder out and blended in with the crowd. They stopped chasing at some point and I circled around the arena and scoped out my seats to see if anyone was watching for me. They weren't so I went to my seat and enjoyed the hell out of the show. But I had lost the knife.
      After the show was over I stayed late and saw the security guy down on the floor. I went up to him and apologized and asked what he did with my knife? He threw it in the garbage!!!!! He took me to the can he threw it out in and I did a quick look inside but everything was covered in stale beer and garbage and other crap people threw out. So no knife!
      It sounds like a big deal now but in those early days after 9/11 things were all messed up and people were REALLY on edge and deservedly so.There were not really any major security protocols in place so it took awhile for everyone to adjust to the new way of living. The knife was no bigger that a small set of nail clippers so it was a pretty harmless little thing. But like I said, my dad gave it too me when I was like 5 yrs old and I always had it on me. So I lost my favorite tool at a Tool show! Haha!

      I saw TOOL a few times during this tour. Maynard also used the headless guitar thingy on Third-eye too. He played the chaotic, distant, soloing in the background while Adam played the first solo of the song. I guess he might have used it for his voice or other things, but that was the one time I was like "oh shit! I can hear Maynard on guitar!"

    I really want to love MJK's voice but I can;t .Lyrically he is solid, albeit the entire thing a parody.
    Perhaps that is his get out clause for an excessively demanding pseudo intellectual fanbase who think they own a piece of him.
    That said, I saw APC in Manchester and in Dallas. I saw Tool live in Dublin.
    Personally I felt his voice faltered, but that's ok. He's human after all

      +Velcro You have an image of pi as your avatar, dude. That *you* of all people would use the term "pseudo-intellectual" without a hint of irony - when you can barely even put a sentence together - is laughable.
      Anyhow. You're right to say that MJK's voice definitely isn't the best, from a technical standpoint and especially live. Then again, Tool composes and mixes their music in such a way that the vocals tend to take a backseat to the instruments. To be honest, if his singing were conventionally "good", it would probably be to the music's detriment more often than not - he knows when to use listeless chanting/harsher tones instead, and when he does, it tends to work out much better (you wanna hear him singing well in a technical sense, listen to the intro of "The Pot").

    • @tuxedomollusk
      @tuxedomollusk 6 років тому +12

      +Tim Renken Gonna stop you right there. I like Rush as much as the next guy, but I hate to break it to you, Geddy Lee is _not_ an "interesting" singer. He's just plain _good_, with an impressively high range and warm timbre, but that does not an interesting, nor superior, singer make. He's *pleasant* to listen to, not interesting.
      Lee and Cedric are excellent singers in their own right, but next to MJK their techniques are really, *really* boring (not to mention thematically dull). They're "better" singers than MJK in the same way that the guitar work in Megadeth is "better" than it is in Pantera or Metallica, or the way Brain Drill's or Moonsorrow's is "better" than Gojira's or Opeth's - well, I mean, sure... _if_ the only thing you care about is dry technicality in its own right (which, if so, means you're missing the point of even _having_ technique in the first place).
      If you want examples of singers who _are_ technically better and more interesting than MJK, try Roy Khan from Kamelot or Rob Halford from Judas Priest, or something - but even those guys, two of my all-time favorite vocalists as they are, can't hold a candle to Keenan either in terms of theme, expressiveness or sheer understated power and presence.
      tl;dr Keenan is _easily_ superior to Lee, no contest.
