Lyrics:
Eye on the TV
'Cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be like
Killed by the husband
Drowned by the ocean
Shot by his own son
She used a poison
In his tea
And kissed him goodbye
That's my kind of story
It's no fun until someone dies
Don't look at me like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the TV
Stare like a zombie
While the mother
Holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky crying
"Why, oh why?"
'Cause I need to watch things die
From a distance
Vicariously I live
While the whole world dies
You all need it too, don't lie
Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
Neither the brave nor bold
Were writers of the stories told
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
I need to watch things die
From a good safe distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same, so
Why can't we just admit it?
Blood like rain come down
Drum on grave and ground
Part vampire
Part warrior
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the transmittal
Sing to the death rattle
La, la, la, la, la, la-la-lie
La, la, la, la, la, la-la-lie
La, la, la, la, la, la-la-lie
La, la, la, la, la, la-la-lie
Credulous at best
Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
Pull your head out of your hippie haze
And give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again
The universe is hostile, so impersonal
Devour to survive, so it is
So it's always been
We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire
Vicariously I
Live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I

Sick in the head
Yes
We are lucky to have been born in the same eraas tool.
Fever dreams have that tool vibe.
This song is even more meaningful than ever. With social media, Internet, and other media, we have a glutton of "vicarious" living.
I like to interpret it as how we all somewhat have a morbid interest in death and horrible tragedies, yet we rather view them safely from the comfort of our home, living vicariously through a camera, "experiencing" these events as if we were there.
you come up with that all by yourself ol chum?

Tool speaks to more then love, the wonder of what this is all about. May he rest in peace, and go on to the next part of his journey.
It’s like they’re playing ten different songs at the same time. Takes my mind all over the place . That’s why I love TOOL . Maybe someone will get what I mean.
I get what you mean and i love what they do. Nuthin else like it on this earth.

Just got out of the Tool concert about an hour ago!! One of the best concerts I've ever been to! The vocals, the visuals, the everything was on point.
I started listening to them in 2002, sophomore year of high school. I saw them live for the first time in 2019 on the initial Fear Inoculum tour. Despite all of the obsession and subsequent burnout in between it was such an incredible experience to finally see them perform. It threw them back into my most heavily replayed music and gave me new perspective and appreciation for songs I already knew so well.
One of my biggest fears in life is to not see TOOL live in concert :(
The lazers are amazing
Friend I went to school with went and seen them in early 2000s or late 90s and he said the visuals on the screen were something else if you were on acid or mushrooms it be a trip for sure

This is neither Tool's greatest song nor their greatest video, but it might be the greatest combination of both components they ever forged.
TOOL is a band like none other. Their music isn’t just music, their albums are story’s and each song is a chapter. There was never a band like TOOL before them and there will never be another band like them ever again. They are timeless. They always will be. My favorite band of all time and in my opinion the greatest single band of all time. Legends, each and every member.

Seen them in Nola in 2020 and again in Nola 2022 they were even better after pandemic
I am with you on that, for sure. Now in my 40s, I am just blown away that I was 13 when I first heard this band, and it spoke to me then. Still the same now, and they were shrouded in such mystery back in the 1990s. I have been in a funk since covid, and forgot how this music got me through some of my worst times. It is indeed timeless.

Haven't been from the very beginning but not far from. Heard opiate and about fell down. Then came undertow. Blasted it with my system in my truck for years. Deftones since early '96. Tool '93
This is probably the Tool song that left the greatest impression on me the first time I heard it. It calls you out from so many different angles.
It’s undeniably true in our modern society.
The intro and ending trance inducing riff and bass just makes you think about your own existence and reason for being.
Согласна!
How the hell did they animate this?
Like...seriously, forget having the vision of this in your head, that's on another level...but being to translate this to what it is, with the tools they had at the time...
This must have made the animator go absolutely insane.
Tool base a lot of their visual style on stop-motion work by the Brothers Quay who are known for weird stuff like this.
"with the tools they had at the time" They are called Tool for a reason...
The animator and director of Tool videos is Adam Jones:-). He had coworked as an animation and/or makeup artist on most of the sf, fantasy and horror movie classics, like Edward Scissorhands, Elm Street, Terminator, Jurassic Park and so, and I think he has got access to whatever tools - nomen omen - he wants since then.

Welcome brother. You’re in for a ride.
One of the sickest songs Tool has ever done IMHO. Personally, one of my favorites!!!
I’m SO with you
Was led here by Alex Grey's art, "Net of Being" and his book. I listened to Tool as a kid but never saw this video or was able to accept this depth of understanding. This band and this art is a portal to higher consciousness.
We're fascinated by death that we watch it from the distance without us being in harms way. Death (the large monster depicted) goes around taking another soul we tune in curious by the fatality of anothers life in comfort knowing we're here experiencing life. Later on in the video its our turn to come back from where it all began to be as one with the univerese. The soul nearing the end of video tempted by the orb of light to take on the human experience once again. in short this is life, death, and reincarnation.
Your interpretation is incredibly inspiring
i like ur explication , but is this video had a relation with alchemy ? ( cuz it's like he talk about duality vision of the human being , and how we can eliminate it to see aith high perception ( wrong and right , dark and light ....) !!!
Great thought, you're probably right about this particular song, anyway this is tool, so who knows xD
I’m just going to accept this as. The definitive explanation.
I almost had a breakdown because the scene with the soul felt so ridiculously familiar, and with the soul gazing at the different universes, this is how I interpreted the video as well.
Producer: "Verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, solo, fade out."

this new album is the best. Think, 13 years, they have all been working on other stuff. Only 4 albums and EP. 13 years dormant. What you think they're gonna do? Do shit?
destined2sleep don’t you think it’s a little early to call it their best? They have one of the best discogs ever and this album came out a few hours ago. Lol
"The universe is hostile, so impersonal. Devour to survive, so it is, so it's always been..."
I got chills just reading those lines.. so powerful. God i love this band!
That's the key to the song and the nail to the coffin. I love how he wants till the very end of the song to make this point. There's something very amusing about watching "reaction videos" of this song with people going like "no no no, that's not who we are, we need bring positivity" then this line drops and they go blank. Maynard is really brilliant.
Adam Jones and Alex Grey did amazing work on this music video.
They never disappoint
And if you combine their names yo get Alex Jones. Meditate on this.
My favorite Tool song ever. Closely followed by The Pot and Lateralus. It’s impossible to pick just one from this incredible band.
I've long since given up on the idea of having a favourite song or movie or tv show or much of anything. There is a landscape with peaks and valleys, and our favourites are at the peaks and our least favourite are in the valleys. Is one peak taller than another? Not necessarily. Maybe it is momentarily, but the elevations can change moment to moment.
This is my favorite, no Tool qualifier.
Folks are NOT PAYING ATTENTION homie
and Tool has been feeding us the truth all along with a few others, the WHOLE TIME...
this is my number one, too. Then Sober, Forty-6-and-2 aaand the song that doesn't get recognition it deserves - Right in Two
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Eye on the TV, 'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be like
"Killed by the husband," "Drowned by the ocean"
"Shot by his own son," "She used a poison in his tea
Then kissed him goodbye," that's my kind of story
It's no fun 'til someone dies
Don't look at me like I am a monster
Frown out your one face, but with the other
Stare like a junkie into the TV
Stare like a zombie while the mother holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky cryin', "Why, oh why?"
[Chorus]
'Cause I need to watch things die
From a distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too, don't lie
[Verse 2]
Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
Neither the brave nor bold
Nor brightest of stories told
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
[Chorus]
I need to watch things die
From a good safe distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same, so
Why can't we just admit it?
[Bridge]
Blood like rain fallin' down
Drum on grave and ground
Part vampire, part warrior
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the transmittal
Sing to the death rattle
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-lie
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-lie
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-lie
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-lie
[Verse 3]
Credulous at best, your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
Pull your head on out your hippie haze and give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again
The universe is hostile, so impersonal
Devour to survive, so it is, so it's always been
[Outro]
We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I

Hello, how are you doing? It is nice seeing you here.
Alex Grey had such a great influence and input on their visuals.
Alex was directly involved with making this video. He said the visuals were inspired by a DMT trip.

I hope that I am not the only one who shares that I love listening to the musical art of Tool with my eyes closed. These artists create wondrous landscapes with their instruments that our imaginations are hungry for and are capable of filling. 🌸
Me as well
I do that with some songs. Being really tired and listening to Lost Keys with your eyes closed in a dark room is interesting.

Ah yes the world of Tool, where everything has eyes
that is Alex Greys world, eveything has many eyes
And every eye has a third eye.
This is the video that made the most sense in my whole life🤯
The actual world*
Werd! Could be a metaphor for the Almighty
Id like to believe this is a sequel to the Parabola video. That this is focusing on the antenna man after he had his kundalini experience at the end of Parabola. The creatures coming out in and out of his eyes are the flaming leaves that swam up his body unlocking the third eye. Id like to think that this video is addressing the idea…what happens next? And I think it’s saying you can either continue to evolve and go deeper into the spiritual abyss as it is limitless. Or, you can devolve and regress back to normal and loose the knowledge u once had. Showing the hardships of human nature that even after an intense awakening that may have been the most beautiful thing in the world at the time it can be hard to continue on the path. Because it looked like the swimmers in his eyes were ready to just leave at certain points like “why did we even try”. But the man went through what a lot have to do to dive deeper: hit bottom. And then had the deepest experience of his life
Tripping balls while watching this was incredible.

Seeing news about the Titan submarine makes me thing about this song. That's what the song is about?
Not the Titan case, but the reactions from situations like this.
exactly, all the media showed not only facts about the tragedy, rather they also put emphasis on how the people died, their backgrounds, etc, which is tbh purely personal stuff.
This is just a perfect song. It just keeps building and building. JMK has this way of setting the tone and mood for the song. Gives me chills everytime

If anyone wants to know, the reason we're excited by seeing death on tv/from a distance is because, IIRC, the mind can't properly differentiate between being in danger itself and just witnessing it, so it activates the adrenal (I believe) gland just the same.

Adam Jones isn’t the best guitarist on the planet, but his riffs are otherworldly. DC, on the other hand, is just otherworldly. His drumming and percussion speaks to me like no other drummers chops have. I only wish I had not wrote TOOL off after Sober came out. I didn’t really like the song and turned stations when they came on. Went to a show in January of 2020 just to chill with my brother and became a fan before they had finished playing FI. So many wasted years not enjoying their art but I’m making up for it since January 29th, 2020
