    Lyrics:
    Eye on the TV
    'Cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be like
    Killed by the husband
    Drowned by the ocean
    Shot by his own son
    She used a poison
    In his tea
    And kissed him goodbye
    That's my kind of story
It's no fun until someone dies
    Don't look at me like
    I am a monster
    Frown out your one face
    But with the other
    Stare like a junkie
    Into the TV
    Stare like a zombie
    While the mother
    Holds her child
    Watches him die
    Hands to the sky crying
    "Why, oh why?"
'Cause I need to watch things die
    From a distance
    Vicariously I live
    While the whole world dies
You all need it too, don't lie
Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
    Neither the brave nor bold
Were writers of the stories told
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
I need to watch things die
    From a good safe distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same, so
Why can't we just admit it?
    Blood like rain come down
    Drum on grave and ground
    Part vampire
    Part warrior
    Carnivore and voyeur
    Stare at the transmittal
    Sing to the death rattle
La, la, la, la, la, la-la-lie
La, la, la, la, la, la-la-lie
La, la, la, la, la, la-la-lie
La, la, la, la, la, la-la-lie
    Credulous at best
    Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
Pull your head out of your hippie haze
    And give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again
The universe is hostile, so impersonal
Devour to survive, so it is
    So it's always been
    We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire
    Vicariously I
Live while the whole world dies
    Much better you than I

This song is even more meaningful than ever. With social media, Internet, and other media, we have a glutton of "vicarious" living.

I like to interpret it as how we all somewhat have a morbid interest in death and horrible tragedies, yet we rather view them safely from the comfort of our home, living vicariously through a camera, "experiencing" these events as if we were there.

I started listening to them in 2002, sophomore year of high school. I saw them live for the first time in 2019 on the initial Fear Inoculum tour. Despite all of the obsession and subsequent burnout in between it was such an incredible experience to finally see them perform. It threw them back into my most heavily replayed music and gave me new perspective and appreciation for songs I already knew so well.

I am with you on that, for sure. Now in my 40s, I am just blown away that I was 13 when I first heard this band, and it spoke to me then. Still the same now, and they were shrouded in such mystery back in the 1990s. I have been in a funk since covid, and forgot how this music got me through some of my worst times. It is indeed timeless.

It’s undeniably true in our modern society.
The intro and ending trance inducing riff and bass just makes you think about your own existence and reason for being.

We're fascinated by death that we watch it from the distance without us being in harms way. Death (the large monster depicted) goes around taking another soul we tune in curious by the fatality of anothers life in comfort knowing we're here experiencing life. Later on in the video its our turn to come back from where it all began to be as one with the univerese. The soul nearing the end of video tempted by the orb of light to take on the human experience once again. in short this is life, death, and reincarnation.

That's the key to the song and the nail to the coffin. I love how he wants till the very end of the song to make this point. There's something very amusing about watching "reaction videos" of this song with people going like "no no no, that's not who we are, we need bring positivity" then this line drops and they go blank. Maynard is really brilliant.

I've long since given up on the idea of having a favourite song or movie or tv show or much of anything. Lyrics
    [Verse 1]
Eye on the TV, 'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be like
"Killed by the husband," "Drowned by the ocean"
"Shot by his own son," "She used a poison in his tea
Then kissed him goodbye," that's my kind of story
It's no fun 'til someone dies
Don't look at me like I am a monster
Frown out your one face, but with the other
Stare like a junkie into the TV
Stare like a zombie while the mother holds her child
    Watches him die
Hands to the sky cryin', "Why, oh why?"
    [Chorus]
'Cause I need to watch things die
    From a distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too, don't lie
    [Verse 2]
Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
    Neither the brave nor bold
    Nor brightest of stories told
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
    [Chorus]
I need to watch things die
    From a good safe distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same, so
Why can't we just admit it?
    [Bridge]
    Blood like rain fallin' down
    Drum on grave and ground
    Part vampire, part warrior
    Carnivore and voyeur
    Stare at the transmittal
    Sing to the death rattle
    La-la-la-la-la-la-la-lie
    La-la-la-la-la-la-la-lie
    La-la-la-la-la-la-la-lie
    La-la-la-la-la-la-la-lie
    [Verse 3]
Credulous at best, your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
Pull your head on out your hippie haze and give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again
The universe is hostile, so impersonal
Devour to survive, so it is, so it's always been
    [Outro]
    We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
    Much better you than I

The creatures coming out in and out of his eyes are the flaming leaves that swam up his body unlocking the third eye. Id like to think that this video is addressing the idea…what happens next? And I think it’s saying you can either continue to evolve and go deeper into the spiritual abyss as it is limitless. Or, you can devolve and regress back to normal and loose the knowledge u once had. Showing the hardships of human nature that even after an intense awakening that may have been the most beautiful thing in the world at the time it can be hard to continue on the path. Because it looked like the swimmers in his eyes were ready to just leave at certain points like “why did we even try”. But the man went through what a lot have to do to dive deeper: hit bottom. How can you not love tool's music videos, it's like having an out of body experience.

Sure, when tool does stuff like this it's "artistic". When I do it i'm "clinically depressed" and need "medication".

Adam Jones isn’t the best guitarist on the planet, but his riffs are otherworldly. DC, on the other hand, is just otherworldly. His drumming and percussion speaks to me like no other drummers chops have. I only wish I had not wrote TOOL off after Sober came out. I didn’t really like the song and turned stations when they came on. Went to a show in January of 2020 just to chill with my brother and became a fan before they had finished playing FI. So many wasted years not enjoying their art but I’m making up for it since January 29th, 2020
