One of my favorite things about this video: it's clear that Reznor is a huge fan, and has infinite respect for Numan. He's not trying to hone in and split the singing, put himself in the spotlight with Numan; he's at the keyboard, playing as part of the band while Gary is up front singing. True respect, from one consummate musician to another.
I don't mind saying my eyes teared up when they broke into Cars. Always liked that song, always will. This was a bad ass version with an edge, will watch it about 20 more times before the night's over.
Imagine how cool it must've been to be Trent in that moment. To get to perform with one of your heroes in front of an adoring crowd. May we all experience something so remarkable.
Noticed that one two. Differen music style, but there's a similar, brilliant moment in Lindsey Buckingham's live version of "Countdown" on Letterman, where he looks back at the drummer.
If there was no Gary Numan, Trent Reznor would have probably still made music but it would have sounded a lot different. NIN owes a lot to Numan and it's really cool to see Reznor pay respect and play with one of his idols like this.
I love Gary Numan's "Metal" and I love Trent's/NIN's cover of "Metal" but I love this version of "Metal" by Gary Numan backed by NIN the most. And I would let Trent Reznor shake my tambourine any day.
I was always a Numan fan Cars one of top 5 songs I was maybe 16-17 when it came out list track of him then I rediscovered his music so much more depth! I’m obsessed can’t get enough!
OMFG! I was 7 years old when Cars came out. So damned awesome to see Numan relevant and that track delivered so aggressively and in a very smart and timeless fashion. Cheers!
Gary Newman betters with age. I'll never forget the first time I heard Metal at a friend's house. That was the main reason I ran out to by The Pleasure Principle even though the song Cars was blasting on all radio channels. AMAZING TO SEE NIN JAMMING HIS TUNES. I THINK IT'S AWSOME AND I AM AS BLOWN AWAY BY THIS. THANKS FOR SHARING THIS. WILL ALWAYS LOVE NEWMAN! Trent, you be looking good yourself. The tambourine is a big part of The song Cars, but I've never seen a man play one so slick & sexy!!!!!!!!!!
He lived up to playing Cedric Sharpley's (RIP) original, excellent rhythms. Sharpley's playing helped make Numan's music ROCK since the analog synths sounded great with his outstanding acoustic drum support!
What got me was watching that crowd going bananas to Cars. I spoke with Gary outside of Irving Plaza in NYC about 20 years ago, and he said, "It just surprises me that anyone even remembers who I am." That was genuine humility. I think I said something like, "What do you mean? You're fucking Gary Numan!' It was something like that. Anyway, he gave me a little furtive smile. He deserves to see a whole new generation going apeshit over his music. It's as great today as it was then. Timely. And timeless.
Has more to do with being a humble and true artists with lots of respect for his own idols. Not being full of yourself is a virtue seldomly seen in this business
Two other things I love about this video. 1). The camera angle, it’s like you’re a band member. Feels so good. 2). The smile on Gary’s face at 6:55, it’s like “get ready for this shit, it’s gonna be fun”.
Trent stepped up, gave him props, acknowledged his contribution and influence to NIN, and then stepped back into the background and let Gary Numan have his moment, How many premeir headliner artists hand over the spotlight and hope they get upstaged? And truth be told, the tambourine is usually handled by a stage hand or as a space filler when the instrument is at rest. Kind of like an extra in a movie. Big props to Trent Reznor for Letting a legend have his stage and his spotlight for a moment and doing the grunt work for the cause of making Gary Numans moment better. 2 sweaty men hugging is usually gay, but not this time, ha ha.
it's true that Numan was so despised, yet so incredibly powerful and catchy. The best industrial synthetic pop of the eighties along with Kraftwerk if you ask me…
Absolutely fantastic!!!!! Gary Numan knows friends are electric! What a sensational combo!!!! Thanks for the upload - just got the neighbours knocking at the door....... they can fucking wait.
How can Gary Numan sound exactly the same now as he did when he was younger? A lot of singers voices aren't as good as they get older. He's barely changed. Amazing.
Can you imagine the power of standing on that stage. Trent Reznor and a buttload of musicians behind you, absolutely lighting up the whole place. And then they open up your signature song. It wasn't what they came for, it's not quite NIN's style. But it's your song, and you've been taking the audience on a trip and they're having a great time. Those unmistakable three drumbeats land, Gary's face lights up. And the whole crowd goes absolutely nuts.
Dear Gary Numan and Trent Reznor. May you bring about so much darkness that the light is evident as it is. A darkness that will only be enlightened by your intelligence and intellect in this life or the next.
@markleistman2955 Maybe some. Crowd response would argue that statement. But yea. BTW... I just seen him, Ministry, and Front Line Assembly 3-19. Fuckn unbelievable concert.
I didn't see Numan live until last year and yet it's great fusion of what I l have loved for 35 years!! This still ranks was an awesome collaboration and I must be a chuck of those views. Awesome!!!
Hey all. I just have to mention this. I just got done listening to Gary's (R)evolution Audible. In chapter 34 he mentions this very footage. It really brought some tears in my eyes. If you haven't done so, I highly recommend you either read or listen to his book. It really made me feel a whole different outlook/perspective of these 2 songs he performed.
I realise that the comments are 3 years old but I'm after those boots. Can you tell me where you got them from please, and are they available in the UK?

AMEN BRO
whatever
Totes. "Reznor is my tambourine player"
That's the main thing that struck me as well. Reznor, true artist, no ego.
every band since 1979 owes something to Gary Numan. Just most people don't know it.
in that Genre' yes....I agree. But there are sooooo many groups that helped to pave the way.
He has no idea how many of us were influenced by him. He's a musician's musician.
Gary Numan probably owes Kraftwerk a lot as well :)
Indeed! Just like every metal guitarist and Roy Clark, but many don’t even know it!
And Gary owes everything to Kraftwerk
I don't mind saying my eyes teared up when they broke into Cars. Always liked that song, always will. This was a bad ass version with an edge, will watch it about 20 more times before the night's over.
Best version I've ever heard actually, although the original will always hold a special place.

Jack H twice! He was on stage with Bowie too!
Oh come on. you have it reversed. Numan performing with Reznor would have been Numan's dream come true.
@@z352kdaf8324 I bet it was great for both of them

Noticed that one two.
Differen music style, but there's a similar, brilliant moment in Lindsey Buckingham's live version of "Countdown" on Letterman, where he looks back at the drummer.
Yes! Pure joy
I was fortunate enough to be at this gig. This vid brings it all back. An absolutely phenomenal evening.
Yep I was there too. It was a monumental, unforgettable night out :)
Wish I was there also

Well, said and I agree :)
They are als real friends now
And now if you go listen to I Am Dust by Numan you can totally hear a NIN influence. I love it.
Great stuff but IMO should have went heavier rather than just replicate
Trent has himself pretty much said exactly what you just did, mate.
Drummer absolutely nails this !!!
Man, when Cars kicks in and the crowd just loses it’s collective shit, it’s so nice to see Gary Numan appreciated by so many young people
Lol! "the crowd loses its collective shit". Now that is funny.. Lol
I love Gary Numan's "Metal" and I love Trent's/NIN's cover of "Metal" but I love this version of "Metal" by Gary Numan backed by NIN the most.

Ilan beating those drums like they owe him money!! Awesome work!
Gary and Trent have the upmost respect for each other That crowd got to see and hear something rather special that night
drummer had a blast it seems
He was off the wall!!!! an AWESOME job!
Rubin giving it some
Gary Numan a true pioneer. High school memories.
Yessss! Long time before Depeche Mode!
Gary looks the same as he did in 1979, Wow!
Somehow with a better hairline now than back then.
Hair implant.
@@Canadiana71 No implant, that is a wig. Not a great one either. But it is Numan, so who cares.
@@silenziostampa4423 "But it is Numan". One hit wonder. Fantastic wig by the way. :-P
@@silenziostampa4423 He's been interviewed about his hair transplants and is very open about it -- he's had five hair transplants and a facelift.

Seriously - this is the reason I watch UA-cam. Thanks for posting this!
This was honestly such a cool moment in music history. Two of my favorite musicians and they work together SO well.
RIGHT!?
Well you know you've peaked when Trent Reznor is a playing tambourine for you.
Lol...
I was always a Numan fan Cars one of top 5 songs I was maybe 16-17 when it came out list track of him then I rediscovered his music so much more depth! I’m obsessed can’t get enough!

@Lucy V RIGHT!?
This concert had to rock. Gary sounds great with NIN.
That bridge between songs...i just wanna cry...
I know right!
It doesn't get any better then this
0:55 Gary Numan comes out looking like a total bad ass. NiN's "Metal" back in 2000 was the first time I'd heard a Gary Numan song. I love this video.
you can tell by the hair at the end how the drummer put all the heart and the energy in the last song, outstanding!!
6:52 look at that smile. he knows he's still appreciated
I think he was smiling because it looks like he almost fell down before that smile
He's such a humble person. I think he really appreciates the crowd. Who says old rockers don't have fun!
OMFG! I was 7 years old when Cars came out. So damned awesome to see Numan relevant and that track delivered so aggressively and in a very smart and timeless fashion. Cheers!
I was 7 too!
Trent himself takes up the tambourine and shakes that groove right in the pocket.

Yea...I agree. When I first his music I was HOLY SHIT!. My older brother and I went to his concert here in Mn back in '80-'81
One year ago i had no clue who Gary Numan was. Now it seems to me he was always there.
That version of Cars was f*cking EPIC. 😳

Gary Numan just released a new album and it's sounding good
This is why the internet was invented was to see Trent Reznor playing this song on the tambourine!

Gary got such a horrible treatment from the UK music press- he's come through the hate to the place he's in now. Wonderful to witness.
I have never heard this song "Metal' before but it is quite hypnotic.
This version has such punch and edginess to it. I like the original, I REALLY like this version! Being a drummer this one speaks to me!!
I am so envious of the people who attended this concert to see this awesome performance.
