Richard Carpenter wrote this song for his sister Karen Carpenter, because he knew she had the most beautiful voice in the world
Her voice was 1 of a kind .
The best pitch perfect voice in the business ever , RIP
Indeed. Although everyone nowadays has perfect pitch with the aid of pitch correction.
Studios are even uploading pitch corrected old live concerts on UA-cam by the likes of Queen (Freddie Mercury's vocals) etc. 😢
@@TimSeraphielah not back with her music...it was just her beautiful voice, no autotune.
I would have to disagree with you, the best natural pitched voice is Hayley Westenra, followed by Ellen Williams.
@@dougdanielson9145
Among the more well known, Ella Fitzgerald was no slouch when it came to pitch. Or anything else for that matter.
@@TimSeraphiel If you haven’t already check out the Wings of Pegasus channel. He does vocal isolation on various songs discussing the extent of pitch correction that is used nowadays and the retroactive remixing. The Stevie Nicks Silver Springs and Randy Meisner videos were especially good
They’re a duo - Brother/Sister. Biggest duo of the 70’s. Karen could play drums and her singing brought you to tears. Her Brother is a musical genius.
One of the greatest , purest voices you will ever hear. What a treasure she was! We knew it even back then.
No the best...
But ya gotta admit, Tiny Tim had his moments....@@michaelasay8587
Karen Carpenter had the most magical voice ever. Her Brother Richard was a musical genius. He orchestrated their music.
Karen Carpenter had one of the most angelic voices ever. Every time she picked up a microphone she made magic.
She also had a tragic life, cut short way too soon and she us dearly missed.
No auto tune no messing with vocals just straight pure angelic voice❤❤ 😊
No vocal runs, no screaming, no whistle register.... Karen doesn't need any of that. That woman was born with the best voice of anyone who ever sang a note and there has never been one like her.. There also will never be. That she was an excellent drummer was just nothing short of a second miracle. She conveyed so much emotion in her voice that it feels like she got a leased line to our hearts through our ears, and poured pure emotion through it...
BEST FEMALE VOCALIST . PURE GENUINE GORGEOUS VOCALS. GOD Bless You Karen Carpenter. RIP. 🙏🙏🙏❤️🔥♥️
I always tear up when I hear Karen Carpenter sing. Such a sweet Angel, lost so cruelly to the world way too young!
Yeah, me too. Almost heavenly.
Amen brother!
Me to bro me too...
Karen has such a hauntingly, beautiful voice…..
Karen Carpenter's voice is the magic. As one DJ commented after a Carpenters Christmas song, "Karen Carpenter could sing the phone book, and I wouldn't change the station!" What a voice!
The best female voices ever ❤❤❤❤
WHAT A LOSS FOR ALL. KAREN CARPENTER IS ONE OF GOD'S ANGELS. 🙏🙏🙏❤️🔥♥️
Karen Carpenter was an Angel 😇 sent from Heaven and left us way too soon! One of the most beautiful voices ever heard! The compositions are the direct result of her brother Richard Carpenter who really played to Karen’s strengths as a singer! I LOVE ❤️ the music of The Carpenters! RIP Karen!
The Carpenters are my all-time favorite group. Their music is timeless. (The group is a brother-sister act along with a touring band of musicians.) Karen Carpenter is known for having one of the best voices ever. Her brother Richard is a classically trained pianist who composes, arranges and sings harmony.
Their library is going to amaze you. Enjoy going down this rabbit hole. Carpenters are brother sister Richard(on keyboards and arranger of their music) and Karen (vocals and occasionally drummer).❤
Karen was also a world class drummer, check out their video for Rainy Days and Mondays. Her brother Richard played piano and did all the musical arrangements.
Karen's voice is incomparable. They had so many hits. Another gorgeous one is "Solitaire."
She is also an excellent drummer
She had a voice like an angel. Many female vocalists have powerful voices, but not many are as smooth as hers. Her voice makes you feel like you're floating on clouds.
The most beautiful female voice in my opinion. She was an awesome drummer. Gone too soon. I remember hearing she died when I was coming home from Jr. High school. 💔😭
"Woman" if you will, Karen was only 20 years old when she showed up at the Studio to record this. She accomplished unsurpassed Perfection on the First Take, reading lyrics off a napkin. The "Magical Element" you're referring to is the magic of Karen Carpenter. She's The Superstar!!!
Karen was 21 years old when she sang this song. What is amazing is that Karen did this entire song in one take. Through her own vulnerability she really felt the emotion of every single word. That is what you experience with every Carpenter song. The masterful composition of her brother Richard arranging the orchestration around Karen’s rich, full, pitch perfect contralto voice.
Released in 1971. Those beautiful Carpenters' musical arrangements were Richard Carpenter's. Karen Carpenter provided the stunning contralto vocals. She is considered the premier female vocalist of the Seventies...
I'm so happy that you are reacting and checking out the Carpenters... Karen Carpenter is a divine inspiration and heartbreaking cautionary story to anyone whose lives have been moved by hers and brother Richard's art....
Karen is the most beautiful person, most soothing VOICE, and best female drummer music has ever experienced. There is nothing better than listening to the legend Karen Carpenter. When you listen to her she sings past your heart to your soul. One of if not the best voice ever.
She should've eaten a sandwich or two.
Nobody could sing like Karen Carpenter!
Thank gawd. The carpenters really sucked.
Karen Carpenter....perfection!
Karen had so much talent and such a beautiful voice but unfortunately she never had a chance in life.
My Guilty Pleasure
Karen Carpenter's Voice ❤❤❤
“Close to You” is Pure Perfection
It is her and her brother with a band. Her voice is so unique.
Yes he is Richard..
I’ve loved this group since the 70’s. Their songs always make me a little sad because of Karen’s untimely passing. I’m so glad young people are listening!! ❤
Her voice always gives my soul a hug it didn't know it needed!
Richard Carpenter is a brilliant arranger. They didn't know Karen could sing; she was a drummer for the group. At some point they figured it out and what you have is one of the great singers of all time.
Not true when it came to “not knowing” that Karen could sing…
They knew Karen could sing and supposedly she sang almost identically to her mother, who sang in church settings.
Initially, Karen was a fill-in drummer and always sang behind her drums.. the main issue the brother Richard and the producer (some say it was the bass player) saw was that when Karen initially sang at a higher pitch, they thought she sounded the same as so many other female singers.
Looking for a tone that would set her apart, at the suggestion of the her brother and those around her, they experimented with Karen trying different pitches and when they played back versions of songs with Karen singing at a lower pitch, that’s when they had their “ah ha!” moment and from then on, the rest is history as they say.
One can hear Karen sing in a generic higher pitch female voice performing behind her drums at an early local TV show when she was a mere 17 years old (it’s here on UA-cam). Interestingly later in her career just before passing, Karen spent her own money to produce a solo album with music that more or less mimicked the disco-ABBA-Grease soundtrack sound that was prevalent in the early 80s where she sings in a more generic high pitch and sounds pretty generic… of course this generic sound was rejected by the brother and record label that it was shelved and eventually released posthumously.
@@sheldoninst You need to calm down.
@@deborahsobel3314
Huh?
@@deborahsobel3314why should he calm down? He gave a very respectful and accurate account of what actually happened.
@malakaisilverman9913 I think going on for paragraphs is a bit over the top. That Richard discussed this recently so I think he would know. What I don't want to do is invite another diatribe over really nothing. Back then I was a Led Zeppelin fan...so.
Karen had a voice of an Angel, best singer ever in my book. She was also a great drummer. She had natural talent. Gone too soon.
Her brother Richard was the first to notice her beautiful singing voice!!
They had tons of hits.. Her voice was like butter, on every song they did. She was also ranked #5 of all drummers in the world at one point, but the industry made her kind of give it up for commercial reasons as the band became more and more popular. In the video rainy days and Mondays, after the couple of pics, they go live to the studio, and you can see she's playing the drums. Crazy. Thank you. 😊
Even more incredible when you realize she made that video in one take
You are right about this being timeless. This song was released over 50 years ago, and it is still loved by many people today. I wonder how much of current music will be listened to 50 years from now?
The lush arrangements by her brother Richard (playing keyboards in this video) were an integral part of The Carpenters magic. And there is no one I've ever heard who could sing like Karen....
Inna you know talent. Im in my 60s and remember Carpenters well. Herb Alpert heard Karen's voice on a demo in 1969 and signed her brother, Richard, and her to A&M records. Karen received 3 or 4 Grammys in the 70s and sold over 80 million records by 1982. She was 1975 rock drummer of the year according to Playboy. KC had the most beautiful voice-ever, and perhaps THE best female vocalist-ever, because she compels you to listen as she sings in perfect pitch to you, not at you, with emotion and enunciation. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, did more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. I recommend songs such as, Yesterday Once More, Solitaire, This Masquerade, Need To Be In Love, Hurting Each Other, Only Yesterday, I Can Dream Cant I, Crescent Noon, Ordinary Fool, Close To You, We've Only Just Begun, A Place To Hideaway, and A Song For You. KC never knew true love. One of her few friends included Dionne Warwick. 5'3" KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia
Hearing Karen's lovely voice always makes me sad knowing how soon and tragically she passed away. Its good that you get to hear the Carpenters, a class act.
Goosebumps listening to this song, always.
This delicate woman, with that angelic voice, played drums in a band she formed with her brother. Search UA-cam to see more of her performances
(The) Carpenters are one of the greatest bands, in my opinion. They were a band composed of brother and sister Richard and Karen, respectively. They were popular back in the 1970s and early 1980s.
Karen Carpenter, the lead singer and drummer, had one of the prettiest voices ever! Some other great songs by them to check out are: Rainy Days and Mondays, For All We Know, (They Long to Be) Close to You, Yesterday Once More, and We've Only Just Begun.
Great reaction Inna!
Karen had one of the best voices to have ever blessed the world with her sound. Karen left us too soon, RIP. It's been said that the angels rejoiced when Karen arrived in Heaven - they had their new lead singer!
I saw them perform at Harrah's in the late 70s or early 80s.. She had the most beautiful voice.
The Carpenters were and are the most amazing gifted talented ever!
Karen Carpenter had the most pure voice from the heart Ive ever heard in my whole life.
The songs, the music, arrangements and her voice are just unique and incredible!!!
I fell in love with then when I wad a kid and today on my late 50s I still am.
Karen Carpenter was an angel voice from Heaven that nobody else so far has gotten again!
I hope the new generations like you can admire and discover their talenyt and contribution to good music and history of music as welll.
Hope some day another gifted voice like Karen Carpenter is born and delight the world again with such amazing voice.
Timeless....
Best voice ever!
I’ve loved the Carpenters since 1969. Karen has the best female voice ever.
The magic of Karen Carpenter. No other female "pop" vocalist even comes close!
Not quite true. The great Dusty Springfield is up there, as is the fabulous Dionne Warwick and then there is Witney Huston. Karen was absolutely outstanding but there were others who were close.
Saludos desde Chile, un fan de los Carpenter. Me emociono al escuchar a Karen.
One of rhe top selling groups of the 70's , the Carpenters were a brother sister act that featured Karen's classic voice, many consider her the greatest female voice ever. I recommend you react to the their very first hit, "Close to you" , as well as "Rainy days and Mondays " and Karen's favorite Carpenters song, " I need to be in love" , there is an awesome live performance of it on you tube.
"A song for you",Carpenters
When you said you “ had no idea what kind of music you were going to hear”, all I could think about is watching your face the first time you hear Karen Carpenter’s beautiful velvet voice , and I expected you would love her brother Richard Carpenter’s beautiful melodies and arrangements. Those are the key signatures of the Carpenters ‘ music …. ❤️🎤🎹💐
Iconic and one of the best singers ever.
AND THE ANGEL SANG
The piano player, and arranger is Richard Carpenter. Hence, the group's name is The Carpenters. They have many hits to explore, including their popular Christmas songs. Karen's voice was golden. She died in 1983, at the age of 32 from Anorexia.
Most of their music makes me feel very sad and takes me to depression but yes its also very beautiful and sometimes I cant help but listen.
This group was a brother/sister duo. The singer Karen's brother, Richard, was the guy playing the piano. In this pre-computer era, music bands were composed of a group of people who played various instruments; they coordinated with each other to play the composition. This was one of the greats of their decade.
I had a huge crush on Karen Carpenter as a young lad. Angelic voice and she could play the drums like you wouldn't believe. That was really cool.
Always an amazing experience to see a first time reaction to Karen and Richard Carpenter. Timeless and Eternal. :)
Richard and Karen were brother and sister. They also had backup musicians.
Karen & her brother were The Carpenters. Richard was slightly older & led the orchestra. Karen was more comfortable behind the drum kit. Look up her cover of Rainbow Connection.
Check out some more of her music. You'll find her voice as most of us describe as silky, smooth and hauntingly beautiful...thanks for a great reaction to what I think is one of the top female vocalists.😊✔️🤗
You _MUST_ do "Rainy Days & Mondays". Most beautiful voice I've ever heard.♥
One of the best female voices ever! Here’s another surprise for you look up Karen Carpenter drumming. Yes she was also a drummer in the band.
The blond guy at the piano its is brother 😊😊
My favorite song by the Carpenters. I still treasure my 7-inch record.
Everyone knows the “Carpenters’. Karen had a gifted voice. Her true life story is so sad.
Karen Carpenter has the voice of melted chocolate. 'Top of the World' was the very first tune that 'did something to me' when I was a young child. I can still remember it coming on the radio, probably when it was first released around 1972 and me looking at my parents wondering why it wasn't having the same effect on them.
Always such sweet sorrow listening to her, she was incredibly talented and left Earth in such a sad way.
To InnoSolo Music : I was a music teacher.... Song written by Leon Russell, Bonnie and deLaney Bramlett. In case you don't know, Karen was a hell of a drummer....the record has been place dover the real soundtrack of this video...unfortunately, she died of a heart failure from battling annorexia in Feb 1983 at age 32 just a week or two from her 33rd birthday. Karen's voice and emotion are so pure she melts your heart down for scrap metal.... her brother Richard was a genious at the piano and orchestral arranging. On the recordings they both sang all the harmonies in layered tracks, making a beautiful choir, but live, their band had to cover the backup vocals with Richard. In the their career puiblicly from 1970 to 1983 they sold over 100 million records, were known all over the world. 3 #1 hits 8 #2 hits and many more. When Karen died, I pulled the car over and cried...I was a music teacher, grew up with her singing on the radio and such. She could never find happiness, her husband, the snake, absconded with and blew all her money, she divorced him, she was very sick and didn't make it back to normal health..her mother favored Richard instead of both of them equally, the mother was a perfectionist moron in my book, who contributed to her own daughter's death over the course of time.Dumb dumb dumb...
Her song “Solitaire” is even better, trust me.
Of all the singers that have died Karen is the one I miss the most. All the music we never got to hear and the help she did not get in time. She was a beautiful tormented soul that we lost way to soon. Rest easy now.
Inna, you are a very intelligent and lovely young lady. Thank you for exploring the remarkable "Superstar" written by Leon Russell and impeccably performed by Karen and Richard Carpenter. The Carpenters are deservedly legends. Their music has a universal and timeless appeal which you accurately describe.
Karen Carpenter and her brother Richard put out some of the best music of the 60s and 70s. She passed too young. She played drums and had to be talked into singing. There was an actual band playing behind them. She played drums and her brother played piano/organ.
One of the finest voices ever.
I loved her the first time I heard her back in the mid 60's. It brings tears to my eyes, but maybe that is because she is gone. Her brother RIchard is the other half of the act, plays keyboards and arranges. You might like to hear a Russian band, Leonid and friends recorded it too, and they did a fantastic job.
The cautionary tale of a groupie. Written by Bonnie Bramlett, Leon Russell, and Delaney Bramlett - who is playing the beautiful white guitar. This cover was released in 1971. Karen is a much loved person (1950 - 1983) with an astonishing catalog. Her voice.
It should be emphasized that Karen was all of 21 when she sang this. Everyone, deservedly, talks about her voice but what should also be noted is how mature and patient singer she was from the beginning. Her phrasing and delivery are incredibly polished.
Welcome, Inna, to the Carpenters rabbit hole. Though Karen left us early at 32 in 1983, she left behind, with brother Richard, a legacy of beautiful music.
Rainy Days and Mondays is a personal favorite and this video shows off some more of her skills. I’m linking to a restored version so the view count is small but the quality is high.

Your reaction was on one hand once again a good one, but on the other one it shows you really got a lot to learn about music!
Mostly about the 70's music!
For The Carpenters, formed by the wonderful Karen Carpenter and his brother, were one of the most important bands from that decade, with some massive hits, and Karen is considered one of the greatest singers, one of the best female voices in Music History ever!
If you want any suggestions of their songs to react to: "Close to you"; "Rainy days and mondays"; "Yesterday once more"; "Please mr. Postman"; "We've only just begun"; "There's a kind of hush"; "Solitaire"; "For all we know"; "Sing".
Nice journey for you! 👍
One of the best voices ever. She died tragically in her 30s from an eating disorder.
So sad 😞
All those instruments you hear, but don't see in the video, is the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Karen's brother Richard, who you see singing backup and playing piano, was and is a musical genius. He composed, arranged and then directed the Orchestra and added this after Karen's death. Creating a masterpiece! Love the French Horn!
Enjoyed your reaction very much. So glad you found Carpenters music. Hope you delve deeper into their wealth of wonderful, timeless music. In my humble opinion, Karen is the greatest female singer, and was a superb drummer. Sadly we lost her way too soon, only 33 when she passed. Tragic story.
I would like to see you react to "This Masquerade" by the Carpenters
Young lady, you're in for a ride with this one. 🌹
Solitaire and I Need To Be In Love and so many others are classics from the best selling group of the 1970s The Carpenters...
Magical voice.
I think listening to it decades after it was written or first sang we lose touch a bit...
We are not totally distanced from it.
Just a tragic and unnecessary loss. I was only seven when Karen passed, but it still haunts me. Just one of the greatest voices ever. So rich but so wrapped in pain. What a wealth you have ahead: We've Only Just Begun, Close to You, Solitaire, Goodbye to Love, Yesterday Once More, Rainy Days and Mondays, For All We Know, I Won't Last a Day Without You... Just hit me right now: I would have loved a Karen Carpenter/Scott Walker duet...
Oh my indeed, they are a classic duo, Karen Carpenter on stellar vocals and Brother Richard on background instrumentation and arrangements that are spot on. Even old hippies like me stop and listen to them, if I want to do an old school classic, the Carpenters are my first choice. Try We've Only Just Begun next, great video and tune. Enjoy! 🎵🎤🎹🎻🎺🎶
Karen will always be remembered becoz of her unique and distinct voice that transcends in every generation
She was an awesome drummer that just happened to be able to sing.
Please listen to more Carpenters. Karen's voice is amazing. So many gorgeous songs to choose from. Close to you, Rainy days and Mondays, Sing. I could go on and on.
this is one of my all time favorite songs! real and very nostalgic.
thanks for reviewing it.
Karen Carpenter's voice is magical and timeless.
She is also a incredibly great drummer as well
This song was written by music Legend Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett. You should check them out.
One of the best voices in music history! ♥
BTW - ♥ yer outfit - the colors, the design - just great!
Wow , Inna played my favorite Carpenters song first =)
The Carpenters were a Brother-Sister act with backing band. Richard was pianist/arranger/producer. Karen did the vocals. Karen passed away from effects-complicatios of anorexia nervosa 4 February 1983.
Excellent reaction video to this indeed timeless song, performed by the late Karen Carpenter. One of the best singers ever👏👏👏
God only took her so young because he needed her to teach the angels to sing ❤️
Don’t fret!
The Las Vegas Legacy tribute duo of Sally Olsen and Ned Mills recreate The Carpenters.
An absolute astonishing reincarnation of Karen in every way, vocally and in style and performance.
Definitely check out Sally and Ned! You’ll be glad you did. 😊
Karen Carpenter was also an amazing drummer...
Voice of angel. Next up Weve only just begun.
They have a ton of hits. You have only just begun.
