Karen Carpenter's voice is literally therapy for the soul! She was always known as thee epitome of the vocalist (not just a great singer) who sang TO US NOT AT US!... Her brother called her voice "phono-genic".. Herb Alpert who signed them to A & M records, said it felt "like she was sitting in your lap singing only to you and for you!"....

Thank you Karen for ripping my heart out of my chest then gently pressing your lips against it. If you block out everything and just listen to her voice, you can feel the emotion and pain in her voice, which was the voice of an angel. This truly is my favorite song of hers. Karen and Linda Ronstadt are the two best female singers ever.

Karen Carpenter did not always nail a song she recorded on the first take. It has become a certifiable myth that she did. She did record the song, "Superstar" in just one take, reading the lyrics from a cocktail napkin. But many other of the Carpenters' biggest hit songs they recorded numerous takes to try to make the released recording as nearly perfect as possible!

She preferred to stay behind her drum set, but her vocals pushed her to the front as the face of the group. There are videos where she's playing drums and singing. In the studio she was known as one take Karen because she would get it right the first time. Her brother Richard ( on keyboards ) did all the arrangements for the songs. @@popcornphilosopher

I never heard Solitaire until I was in my mid 20’s and it absolutely blew me away then. I can relate with it so much in my own life. ☺️
The song you need to hear next and do a reaction video for from Karen is; “I Can’t Make Music”! Karen’s singing and the violin at the end absolutely makes me sob almost every time. I’m not at all afraid to admit that and yes I am a straight 43 year old man. 😁 Something about the song, the arrangement, Karen’s perfect baritone voice and the high violin fading off at the end, just after Karen finishes her vocal…it’s so perfect! 🎤🎼🥹 Solitaire is my second favorite, but “I Can’t Make Music” 🎶 is absolutely out of this world with emotion. 🥹🥲

I have been re-listening to Karen after many years, and Im agree--this song is not only the best song in terms of her depth of feeling, the arrangements, her deep notes, but I would place it in the top 10 songs of all time. Love your reaction!!!

"There was a man a lonely man, who lost his love through his indifference." YIKES!
"A heart that cared, that went unshared, until it died within his silence." Double YIKES!
Emotional investment is the life blood of a relationship. Without it, as soon as the physical infatuation is over, so too is the relationship.
And yes, this applies equally to both parties in a relationship.
This is one of my favorite "Warning" songs. I understand why Karen didn't like this song, since it is depressingly real.
Most, if not all of the songs that she wrote, had at least an underlying optimism to them. It must have just went against her outlook to sing this song.
She's without a doubt, my favorite female vocalist of all time.

    • @popcornphilosopher
      @popcornphilosopher  7 місяців тому

Yeah, you know I kind of got at this in part two but the more I thought about it the more I realized that she probably really didn’t like this song because of that reason. The first line really bothered me from the beginning though. But I think it’s why Karen’s version cuts the deepest.

It's nice to hear someone recognize and acknowledge how great the Carpenter's songs were arranged and recorded. That's all (with some help, of course) Richard. Everyone knows Karen was one of the greatest singers of all time, but Richard was also one of the greatest arrangers, composers, and producers of all time, too. Their partnership is what made the Carpenters great.

Solitaire was written by a great singer songwriter Neil Sedaka who had many big hits throughout the 50s- 70s and has performed this himself, it was also recorded by Elvis who also did an outstanding performance with the song.
I have all the Carpenters albums and I’d suggest an album that is my favourite album which is called THEN & NOW which is kinda like a concert album.

Stunning reaction. Herb Alpert heard Karen's voice on a demo in 1969 and signed her brother, Richard, and her to A&M records. Karen received 3 or 4 Grammys in the 70s and sold over 80 million records by 1982. She was 1975 rock drummer of the year according to Playboy. Perhaps THE most beautiful voice-ever. She compels you to listen to her sing to you, not at you. KC's enunciated emotion almost always had a haunting timber. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, recorded more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. KC has a list of 'perfect' songs such as, Yesterday Once More, Rainy Days And Mondays, This Masquerade, Need To Be In Love, Hurting Each Other, Only Yesterday, I Can Dream Cant I, Crescent Noon, Ordinary Fool, Superstar, A Song For You, etc. KC never knew true love. One of her few friends included Dionne Warwick. 5'3" KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest, beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia

Interesting info too. I love hearing how she was respected by her contemporaries because I feel like a lot of times they talk about how they weren’t as respected in their time and only in retrospect did people realized how great they truly were/are!
