Karen suffered from an eating disorder. The movie, The Karen Carpenter Story, revealed some of her struggles. Evidently, comments about her weight in some of their reviews deeply affected her self-esteem. She was a beautiful young woman and by no means overweight. Karen's eating disorder eventually lead to heart failure at a young age. Such a tragic loss of a beautiful and talented young woman. 💔

Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell co wrote it, called "Groupie". Great song but the Carpenters took it to another level.

With a writing credit by Delaney Bramlett, who was married to Bonnie Bramlett, and is playing that beautiful white guitar. Drums by Hal Blaine of The Wrecking Crew. Released 1971.

👍 Karen had the most beautiful voice I have ever heard! If you listen to the lyrics of this song it is about unfulfilled love, heartbreak and longing. Karen was able to convey these feelings with her voice- it doesn’t necessarily mean that she was feeling that way herself!

    Hi Tasha,
The word is melancholy. They were the masters of that type of music. In hindsight knowing what happened to Karen the sadness comes to the front. It’s been 41 years since she passed and it still haunts the memories for those of us who lived through it all. It’s the joy of her voice and their music that also heals us. There are so many examples of songs for different moods and styles it’s hard to not recommend all of them in one giant batch. As any OG fan can see, you were “melting” right on camera. It’s OK, we all did/do. It’s just welcome to the rabbit hole. Many will recommend their faves. You will feel the love of what I call The Carpenters Army. They find reactors and encourage them to learn more.
You love the harmonies. Then “We’ve Only Just Begun” is an early and excellent example. The video with many millions of views is the right one.
For maybe the saddest song, the]at would be “Goodbye To Love.” Written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis. It was about Karen but they didn’t admit it then. She was 22 when she sang it. A beautiful 22 year old singing that song is the definition of sadness. Because of Tony Peluso’s guitar work, this song went down in music history as the first “Power Ballad.” I don’t think there’s an official video on this but there are videos.
I’ll let those two hopefully continue your journey. There’s more and I’m holding one for later. It’s lesser known, I’m a major requester on it. Love watching you react, oh and the guy should have stayed and he’d melt to, it’s a cool thing to watch a couple melt. Oh and yes, Luther Vandross is who you were thinking of and Ruben Studdard covered his version to win American Idol.
    Joe

Luther Vandross sang it. her emotions came from her ability to interpret songs, listen to good old dreams happy country song, jambalays, but when she sang sad so when she sang sad songs she emoted so well the sadness within the lyrics thay you felt them, that was her brilliance not her own sadness. see her interviews and in many she is upbeat hasppy with a great sense of humour,

Many people know the Luther vandross version
But this classic was written by the legendary Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett.
It came about from the great Rita Coolidge who experienced and watched female groupies with rockstatars. And Leon and Bonnie along with her husband Delaney crafted the song
And in fact the actual working title of the song originally was not going to be superstar it was going to be called Groupie!
I did appear along with bronnie brambles husband at the time Delaney bramlett AKA Delaney and Bonnie on a 45 single but it really went nowhere on the charts until the Carpenters covered it in 1971 and then Luther vandross would do it in 1983.

So much of the music from the '50s -'70s has been used today on commercials and movies and covered or sampled by current bands just because it is, for the most part, so much better than the music that is coming out today.

Hello Tasha ... First off I want to say how much I love the sincerity and joy that comes through in all of your reactions. It's refreshing ... thank you! I'm writing mostly to let you know about a 1973 Carpenters appearance on The Tonight Show that I stumbled across on UA-cam. It features a small medley of songs followed by a very candid sit-down interview with Karen and Richard. If you're interested, do a search for "The Carpenters | Carson Tonight Show". Thank you again!

Pull up and watch some of her drum solos and marvel at her ability behind a kit and the precious smile on her beautiful face. Though she had, imho, the greatest female singers voice, she was also a superb drummer. She considered herself a drummer who also sang and always had a big smile on her face when playing!

It's interesting how people reflect that singers are mirroring their actual life. Of course they are. Tasha do you know anyone that doesn't have at least occasional life problems? Life=struggle. We all have our ups and downs. I see singers the same as actors in the following regard. Singers fall into a character like an actor, just for a lot shorter amount of time. In order to give a performance, that's what singers and actors do, they perform by "becomimg" whatever they are singing/acting about. Karen does happier songs as well. Watch "On Top Of The World" for an example. I challenge anyone to find someone that doesn't have any problems. Karens deeper register is perfect for reflecting sadness. Just as William Defoe is perfect for portraying a villain. A character singer?¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@@johnb.2518 she has. Just some fact you may not be aware of. Her song Christmas Again, it was co-written by Donnie Demers and Steve Eaton. Steve wrote ‘All you get From Love Is A Love Song” for … Carpenters. They were forwarded a Short by Tori and reached out to her. On “I” she has an acoustic with piano cover of Rainy Days… She got a comment from @paulielama2 with many accolades on the beauty of her voice. He knows from beautiful voices, since he cowrote the song. Herb Alpert has given her a ❤️ at least twice to my knowledge. Chris May who coauthored “Carpenters: The Musical Legacy” produced, arranged and was pianist on her cover of “Georgia On My Mind.” She is an invited singer to the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration this April in Downey. So the girl got cred. She will be the first to tell you she doesn’t think she sounds like Kacie. I’d say she has the type of voice I want to hear more of. Now she’s showing her instrumental chops in her newest. She pretty much replaced four members of Heart and is working on Carpenters. Drums were sneak peaked in Crazy On You. She has a full drum kit to go along with a rack of guitars and a keyboard. So, enjoy the experience it’s just beginning.

The song is fictional. Its written from the perspective of a Superfan who had a one night affair with her favorite guitarist. He told her he loved her. He doesn’t He said he would be coming back to see her. . She is trying to find the words to make him come back. He isn’t. Her heart is slowly breaking as she realizes that this is what is happening.

Shes so sad because she had a jealous Mother who told her as a kid to not eat too many cookies! Thats what led to her aneroxia!! Married once to a guy that just wanted her money. And besides the horrible Mother, I contribute some of the fault to Richard for her death. He was her brother. She killed herself! And most of the time its because of the family ...what a fkin shame.
